LETTER
Swapo like the ANC?
03/09/2008 15:22  - (SA)

Answerit can help.
  • Namibia: Pohamba for 2009 polls
  • Sam Nujoma says farewell
  • Swapo vets launch new party
  • Dear Editor,

This is in response to Chris Roper's column.

Though I now live in Namibia, I lived in South Africa for more than 10 years. I lived in the Western Cape and studied at Stellenbosch.

I love South Africa as much as I do my country of birth. This open letter gives me hope that there could be a better future for us if we have the guts to do something about it. We do not have to follow politicians blindly just because they struggled for our freedom. Yes we are grateful to them but it is time to put the past between us and look forward to a new future together.

I see the same thing happening in our country. Namibia achieved independence in 1990. It has been 18 since the Swapo government came into power. And each day more and more people are asking questions of the government like "what have you done for us in 18 years?"

What about all the promises that were made of houses for the poor, water and electricity in rural areas? They can't answer these questions because what they have done precisely nothing. The average person has become poorer and poorer whilst the rich have become millionaires.

Our Swapo Youth League has made the same type of utterances like Julius Malema. Speeches that tell their supporters to fire people in high positions that belong to other political parties. To withhold water from your brother if he belongs to a party other then Swapo. And what is worse is that the majority of the people actually do this.

South Africa and Namibia have lauded themselves as being democracies but on ground level it seems to me that they begin to operate any other dictatorship in Africa.

In our country as stated above people have begun to ask questions, make statements and to take the government on about decisions and policies. It feels to me that the youth of our country is taking the same steps as these learners in South Africa have. Baby steps, but steps in the right direction at least.

It gives me hope that we can have a better future and make our countries the special places they should be. It gives me hope that maybe I don't have to emigrate.

I don't want to leave, this place is in my blood.

    Cynthia du Plessis,
    Namibia

      Relax!
    03/09/2008 15:29
The only way these 'youth' leagues can make it onto the news is by making stupid, bold statements. They have, and NEVER WILL make any headlines for any positive contributions. As for democracy: We're only a democratic country IN THEORY as the government does not listen to the plight of THE PEOPLE. Only an ELITE few have it good. - Juan

      When liberators become dictators
    03/09/2008 15:31
It is so often in Africa that the very people who 'liberated' countries via terrorist means become dictators. Please read Das Kapital and the documents relating to these terrorist/liberation movements and you will see the truth. Remember Winnie Mandela: "With our matches we shall rule" - basically through extreme intimidation we shall rule the country or render is UNGOVERNABLE! Chaos and insanity is all what they know! - orakle

      Not an accurate comparison
    03/09/2008 15:35
"What about all the promises that were made of houses for the poor, water and electricity in rural areas? They can't answer these questions because what they have done precisely nothing." Well the ANC can give different answers to such questions. They have provided houses, water and electricity. We might argue about the quantities, but they have gains in each of those categories. Their water supply program was particulary succesful. I'm not sure that most of this article holds water. - Big Bad Bob

      @big bad bob
    03/09/2008 15:38
Dude what are you smoking! The anc took over and within 14 years south africa was CRIPPLED by an electricity shortage! Our water is getting dirtier and as for HOUSES? bwahaaha! Dude, there are people on the housing list that have DIED of age before even getting a house! - Juan

      Big Bad Bob
    03/09/2008 15:42
You are delusional if you think the ANC have achieved good results, they are at least a million houses short of what they promised. Eskom? Crime? Economy? Please man the ANC have done nothing. A tap at the bottom of the street is not a better life for all..... wakey wakey. - Point Blank

      Oh please
    03/09/2008 15:45
And I forgot. THOUSANDS of ANC cronies on suspended leave for corruption and fraud... oh my god and you think they such saviours. What a joke, they driving in huge cars pushing everyone off the roads to get to a court case during office hours instead of working. Oh please... I can't take it anymore, tell your brothers to leave Europe so I can move there and live in peace. - Point Blank

      @ Big Bad Bob
    03/09/2008 15:48
I do give it to you. Some was done. But just some. In most places they are still waiting. And the promises was made that it would be everybody that will recieve these services. My point is do not make sweeping statements and promises that you can't keep. Another fact:some of our goverment ministers recieved pension to the total of N$34 million, while the people in rural areas still have nothing.Wouldn't you think that that money might be better spend some where else. - Cynthia

      Nothing to Fear!!
    03/09/2008 15:48
Note to all - It was only a small minority that kept the entire nation under check during the apartheid era. So if push comes to shove it can be done again.....ANC & their Cosatu puppets might have the majority of supporters but lucky for us the majority is uneducated and desperate! - Liberator

      The Houses...
    03/09/2008 15:49
Guys...there is a BIG scam going on whereby the BEE fat cats put into place the plans to build the houses...they get surveyors in to survey the proposed land, and a plan approved...then they apply to the relative municipality for the Govt money to build...and POOF they disappear with millions and move on to the next municipality! My old man is a surveyor and this is what is happening!!! Obviously its more involved, but no space to type it!!! - KS

    03/09/2008 15:53
the only people gettings houses are illegal immigrants and people with money? Why these people you ask? because they have money to buy their way up the list and get houses. Hell i can't even drink my water anymore sometimes it looks like urine coming out my taps. This country is dissolving into nothing by the very ones who think they liberated this country. You blacks that defend the anc know they are wrong but you do nothing you are digging your own grave and the grave of your children.hahahahaa - terence

      @big bad boob?
    03/09/2008 15:55
The ANC and the ANCYL want to allow Zuma to spit on the courts of this country. A "permanent stay of prosecution" means getting off scot-free for corruption. What about job creation? The ANC still hasn't provided a plan for grass-roots job creation. Even the so-called Apartheid government had an employment plan that was LABOUR INTENSIVE! It was called Public Works. - Jakes

      SWAPO Youth Idiots
    03/09/2008 15:57
The problem with those youth league idiots in Namibia is that they were never part of the SWAPO force that fought for liberation. They have their own self styled idiotic policies and absolutely NO education.Their behaviour borders on uncivilised, backward tendencies to achieve their aims.Screw their rights-shoot the lot of them - Sean

      We need the Youth Leagues
    03/09/2008 16:01
We need both the Swapo and ANC youth leagues to guide us. Without them the masses are lost. they actually help millions of youth, through their in house programs.Without Swapo and the ANC both countries would have been destroyed by now. I totally support both Swapo and ANC youth Leagues as they help lead the progress in both countries. - Thabo Z

Agreed Big Bad Bod and to Juan
    03/09/2008 16:09
You see Juan, that is where we differ, Just like Big Bad Bob i believe that the ANC Govt has done reasonably well given that its only been 14 years. We may be both proud South African but the two of us live worlds apart. I am encouraged to vote for the ANC (together with my friends and family) again next year bacause of the development i see everyday in my township ( almost every1 has access to electricity & water, our roads are tarred etc)its pity you don't see these. - The Village Pope

      @ idiot big bad bob
    03/09/2008 16:12
It is quiet obvious that "big bad bob" has not been to the rural areas, please get a wake up call, ANC has done nothing in the past 14 yrs, and it doesn't look like things will get better in the future either...not with kind of people we have as future leaders! Please be realistic - Please be realistic

      poor maintainence
    03/09/2008 16:14
Big Bad Bob, go talk to the guys at the Development Bank of South Africa, and they will tell you about the crumbling services infrastructure which is a result of over-extension without improving (or even maintaining) the support infrastructure. It's well and fine to pump more and more water to people, but the pipes can't handle it. With the price of one black BMW 760Li for JZ they could renovate a small township's water infrastructure. - Oom_Kosie

      Bored in Namibia?
    03/09/2008 16:19
We are not interested in what's going on in Namibia, i think you should raise your views with your peers in your country(namibia), otherwise, if you feel your views are not addressed your way then join the bunch of S/African moaners planning to leave for australia - TiredOfMoaners

      Not in South Africa

The people are too stupid to question the government. - Sinudeity

      @Thabo Z
    03/09/2008 16:23
Thabo, please fill us in as to what these 'in house programs' entail. If the youth leagues are doing good for the youth, please tell us what it is. The 'masses' as you refer to them are far better off lost than being led by these idiots. - TedHaller

      Swapo and ANC
    03/09/2008 16:25
Makes me think of Marie-Antoinette who told the poor to go eat cake if they do not have bread. Such a shame that leaders are more worried about themselves than those who voted them there. And yet the voters are as blind as moles. - Mark V

      Big Bad Bob
    03/09/2008 16:25
please ignore these ill-informed people who deny that our govt has achieved a great deal in 14 years...funny how none of them actually live/ have ever lived in townships or have family living there, yet they feel qualified to assess whether govt has delivered! Typical. - VG

      @Juan
    03/09/2008 16:26
what are you smoking chief and whan last did you visit the lacations? there is running water there and there is electricicity and yes some members of congres have stole and are corupt. the fact remains thosands of houses are built maybe there would be more if your fore fathers did not leave the country in so much debt but hey we are getting there thank you and if south africa was like namibia why did she come to study here and not go to europe? - qaqa

Thabo Z - What EXACTLY does the ANCYL do?
    03/09/2008 16:27
What is their purpouse? Except from organising rallies where varsities get burned down and such. And making inciteful statements to the press. What programs do the ANCYL have to improve its local neighbourhoods? NOTHING. The ANCYL is there, for the idiots of the idiots, who couldn't get membership in the ANC. The ANCYL = ANC B-Team - Sinudeity

      What is freedom?
    03/09/2008 16:32
There has not been a single African country that has done better after independence than before, makes you wonder what you were all fighting for? Is it better to be "fee" and die of hunger than to be "occupied" and prosper? Enjoy your freedom and democracy! - Jono

      @ tebza
    03/09/2008 16:33
And now dont they have freedom ?I get now they want freedom to steal as much money as possible and not get prosicuted for it ? Thats not freedom thats theft . . ; - charlie

      @ Thabo Z
    03/09/2008 16:33
Yo, yo, yo Thabo! PLEASE can i have some of what you're SMOKIN'???? That must be some GOOD stuff, man. - sisonke

      At least ...
    03/09/2008 16:45
SWAPO did NOT get rid of all the white experience/skills/competence in the civil service like the racist and race-obsessed ANC idiots did here! That's why things still work in Namibia, even though they have not kept their promises to the poor. - He Who Knows

      You all forget
    03/09/2008 16:45
That is was the economically crippling effects of sanctions which literally forced the THEN racist NP government into negotiations with the ANC. Those came from the "evil west".... the problem is that SOME black people do not actually really know the full history of the West (whites) invlovement in the trnasformation in this country, they believe the propaganda rubbish their racist "leaders" tell them that it was only the ANC that freed them.. oh man it's like talking to a brick wall. Eish. - Point Blank

      @ Please be realistic
    03/09/2008 16:49
Which rural area have you been too he? I'm from a rural area and i can tell you mine and the neighbouring areas have changed, we have proper houses instead of huts, electricity; when i was in high school i studied using a candle or paraffin lamp. We have access to water and the entire villlage is clean and our people are happy, uneducated or not. I advise you to go try tell them ANC hasn't done anything for them and then come back and talk. - Mamamia

      Who to vote for
    03/09/2008 16:51
Fed up with the ANC , but not willing to vote for the perceived white DA, who does the educated black / coloured ect vote for? Think its time for a new non racial political party with no ties to the past but eyes set on the future - TC

      14 Vs 350 years
    03/09/2008 16:51
You "whites" ruled SA for 300 years and yet you want to compare what took you those years to do with those done in 14 year? Your leaders were also corrupt. My grand parents were forcebly removed from their land to make way for "white" WW2 veterans, but when the same must be done is wrong. - tebza

      Village Pope
    03/09/2008 16:53
I am glad you seeing change in A township, try looking at the whole country mate. It is in a shambles and you rejoicing because you have a tarred road in your township. Dude, there are THOUSANDS of roads in SA which are broken and need fixing but they not because the money for them is sitting in the ANC councillors pocket! - Point Blank

      @Thabo Z
    03/09/2008 16:55
One question, instead of the ANCYL pledging their lives for Zuma, should Zuma not be pledging his life for the youth of South Africa. When did the fight become about one man and not the people? The ANC seems to be spending more time trying to save Zuma than save the country. What do you think? - Rian

      Youth ignorance.
    03/09/2008 16:58
The youth have always been all about making themselves heard. If you look at the youth of 20 years ago in both Namibia & South Africa, there is a distinct difference. The youth used to be young(younger than 22), well educated, naive & outspoken. Today they are older (up to 45),poorly educated, stupid, naive & outspoken. - Malcolm X

      @ Thabo Z
    03/09/2008 16:59
Have you ever been to Namibia? Besides maybe watching the Brave Warriors beat Bafana? So what makes you an expert on Swapo & Swapo Youth League? - Filemon

      @Liberator. Re: Nothing to Fear!!
    03/09/2008 17:02
If you are trying to say that things can go back to the way they were with a minority white rule. I think that you are very mistaken. I would be very surprised if black people vote for a white man (and don't blame them). I assume you are not suggesting that power can be taken by force because that would not create a properous South Africa. - Rian

Can a fighter be a leader?
    03/09/2008 17:03
Can anyone name an example where a fighter (I'm talking blazing guns, planting bombs style fighter) eventually ran a country successfully? I'm starting to wonder if it is at all possible? Shouldn't they consider handing the country over to someone with such experience after they won? Can they switch of their violent extremist ways after the fight to consider ALL they people in their country? Seems like Madiba was the only one to successfully make that transition. - HT

      Juan, Cynthia, Jakes and co
    03/09/2008 17:05
The ANC has messed up quite a few things, but they have also delivered in some instances. Water, Electricity and Housing particularly. I come from a township and I still go there because some of my family still leaves there so I know what I'm talking about. 400 yrs of Damage and Poverty cannot be reversed in 14 yrs. The electricity supply issue is purely sabotage. The people that build the power generators left when the ANC took over in 1994, leaving their mess behind. - Hero Nakamura

      Terrenace you're out of line!!!
    03/09/2008 17:09
I am black and not an ANC supporter. The corruption that was happening during the apartheit era was not as transparent as it is today.Obviously media was NOT independent. That is a fact.I will tell u 1thing MOST white people like yourself remain to be racist.U curse "Black".U just choose NOT to see any good. Not 1ce in this column have I heard something positive being said about a Black person,by a white person.U thnk u are more superiour than anything.U neva come with solutions-Always ridicule! - Absurd

Do people read the letters properly ?
    03/09/2008 17:09
Some commenters - especially those who has something to say about EVERYTHING - only see the words "Youth League" and immediately fly straight into their usual anti-youth rants. Read the letter carefully, and you'll see Cynthia is praising the youth for starting to voice their dissatisfaction with the un-democratic behaviour of the country's leaders... as Chris Roper also informed us today. Cynthia is expressing hope for southern Africa - and I tip my hat to her, Chris and the youth too. - Jaco Wium

Who joins an organisation like the ANC Youth League? Well apparently the outcasts who remain uneducated and cannot enter the job market.
