Dear Editor,

Earlier in the year, Malema took Kgalema Motlanthe down in public and the ANC said they told him to behave, promising a different Malema.

Their words were not cold before he launched an attack against Zola Skweyiya. Again, the ANC declared that Malema was spoken to because he is showing disrespect.

During last week, at an Editor's luncheon, Jacob Zuma stated that party leadership has taken Julius Malema to task and that we should have noticed that he had toned down his rhetoric. He did however say that the youth is impetuous and his behaviour is deserving of forgiveness. Whilst campaigning in Cape Town, Zuma called for more respect for elders.

On Wednesday, in Kimberley, Malema made threatening noises about the youth knowing who the Lekotas and Shilowas are and they will make them run. This whilst sharing a stage with Zuma.

Over the past weekend Malema declared University of Limpopo a no-go area for COPE and called Shilowa a security guard and bad parent. On Saturday, in Nelspruit, Zuma said he had told Malema to tone it down. Whatever that means.

Subsequently the ANCYL by the mouth of Floyd Shivambu said "The ANC does not instruct us nor does it order us to do or not to do anything," Shivambo was reacting to a promise by ANC president Jacob Zuma to reign in ANCYL president Julius Malema, who is prone to controversial utterances.

In an interview on 702, November 17, 2008, Malema denied that Zuma told him "to tone it down".

I want to make the following points. This is yet another lie by either Zuma or Malema. The ANCYL under the leadership of Malema is a law on themselves and the ANC cannot control them. Zuma does not practice what he preaches; he cannot and will not enforce respect for elders. It is an empty promise made for political expediency. Zuma's call for political tolerance is empty words. He does not mean it and no action will ever be taken against transgressors

I am concerned that the ANC and it's alliance partners will covertly promote political violence in the run up to the elections whilst leaders will condemn it publicly. Maybe Carl Niehaus can explain.

"I am concerned that the ANC and it's alliance partners will covertly promote political violence in the run up to the elections whilst leaders will condemn it publicly." -------- The did so in the past. Why would they do things differently now? I mean, why have they set up paramilitary training camps in Natal? Vote DA or COPE!
Sean 11/18/2008 1:46:05 PM
Zuma will have to live with Malema and will have to face the same arrogance that so many have had to face without fear or favour. If Zuma thinks he is immune to Malemas pride, just wait..., nothing short of the top job will fit Malema's ego.
Jabu Pule 11/18/2008 1:47:17 PM
I'm proud of Malema, he speaks the truth out loud and nothing else. People like Zapiro are today hailed as heros for what, a cartoon that disrespected the elders, what about Zapiro. Avoid double standards Mr Author. As ANC man, I wish to congratulate Julius Malema in his work to defend our revolution, he is young and brave, I like that. I don't want a leader Zille or Lekota, empty cans make the loudest noise. Viva Malema. Viva Zuma. Viva ANC.
Rafiki 11/18/2008 1:50:34 PM
If the ANC cannot "govern" in its own kraal, where is its authority. The fact that JZ can allow baby JUJU to speak as he pleases is a reflection of his inablity to lead.
mlungisi 11/18/2008 1:55:42 PM
We ANC members accept call for political tolerance and we never been intolerance, just that some few individuals who fail to accept disagreements and defeats are trying to label us this way. We are still going to defeat them. Soon South Africa will know who is politically intolerant and naturally arrogant. They can deny it but soon COP will be divided. Lekota lacks intellectual capacity and makes pointless argument. He never like Zuma face on ANC t-shirts but he like his face on COP t-shirts!
Mzitho 11/18/2008 1:55:53 PM
Leave malema alone he is execising his democratic right
Alibaba 11/18/2008 1:58:02 PM
Well said. It's one thing to say you will speak to Malema, quite another to sit smiling in the audience while these comments are made and a Premier is virtually told to go. JZ has too many debts to pay, and no moral authority - he cannot control anybody, but is controlled by everybody and his brother - do we really want such a president or government?
Concerned 11/18/2008 2:06:37 PM
Unfortunately, even if Jacob Zuma is able to reign in Julius Malema regarding his utterances, it will not alter his views and ideas and it makes me shudder to think that he is head of the ANC youth leage, a position that influences many young South Africans, the future leaders of this country ...
chillepeppa 11/18/2008 2:08:32 PM
Inciting violence is not a right, it's a punishable offence.
bala boy 11/18/2008 2:09:42 PM
for a genocide in SA like no other african country has ever seen. If you thought Rwanda was bad, (watch this space....)Violence at its best.
Lucky Ralawe 11/18/2008 2:09:46 PM
It is clear that Malema articulates the hatred and intolerance haboured by the ANC. A young hothead who could not even pass woodwork boldy states that the former President would be recalled, and the "prophesy" is fulfilled? That cannot be a coincidence. Methinks Malema is just a jackrussel who leads the way for rottweilers - the Kangaman, Vavi et al. If that is not true, the Kangaman must rebuke him in public. Enough undermining of our intelligence already!
Les-Maada 11/18/2008 2:11:34 PM
irresponsible utterances from the likes of Malema in particular! The ANCYL has always been a menance & has long ago continued to defy what the motherbody stood for in years!Mbeki has also encountered such menance from the likes of Mbalula during his tenure as the ANC Prez!It is very unfair to drag JZ into Malema's dirt even when for several times have come out clear about not condoning Malema's line of talk!I also do not condone such behavior even if some idiots keep relating me with Malema!
Capt. Jack Sparrow 11/18/2008 2:12:16 PM
This is a perfect example of the Tail waging the Dog... The ANC Leaders dont have the bolls to stand up to the ANCYL...if they do they will loose to many votes in the upcoming elections and they cant afford that!!!
Badger 11/18/2008 2:13:28 PM
that the ANC need the YL votes come next year. So Malema and cronies will be screaming and shouting until such time, and no-one not even Zoooooma is going to tell him to shut it. Votes is what ANC needs, VOTES
Stef 11/18/2008 2:14:03 PM
The ANC is made up of lies and deceit, when will South Africans realise that? Malema if you want to howl with the wolves, don't piss with the poodles. You are a nobody with shit for brains ............
@Jabu Pule 11/18/2008 2:15:13 PM
Your pathetic excuse for an opinion has been noted. Couple of things, firstly you warn the Author of double standards. No where in the article do i see him supporting Zapiro. Secondly, you say empty cans make the loudest noise. What does that make big mouth Malema. Clearly your head is made of tin too..empty. Anyone that supports that kind of behaviour can't have two brain cells to rub together. Ryan
Dries 11/18/2008 2:25:47 PM
If Zuma said that he spoke to his version of "mini me" then he is either lying or he is unable to control his people. Either make him an unsuitable choice as president, even of SA.
Bmw 11/18/2008 2:36:53 PM
Johannesburg - ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is the victim of "a sustained campaign in the media" and inaccurate media reports that "belittle" him, the ruling party said on Tuesday. This seems to be a standard response from the anc. What type of county are we going to have where a president cant keep his word. Poor South Africa.
Juan 11/18/2008 2:42:38 PM
WHO CARES what Malema says? Have you seen his matric results floating around on the internet? He is as sumb as a sack of hammers! I would be deeply ashamed if he was my leader!
Sinudeity@Gmail.com 11/18/2008 2:43:59 PM
Malema is exercising his right to Free Speech. And so is the Media, and everyone else. Even though, I might not like what Malema says, I will fight to the death, his right to say it.
Mark T 11/18/2008 2:45:30 PM
Malema is a liability to the ANC and only Mothlanthe seems to understand this. JZ loves it as it is his little mini me. I do not belive he represents the youth of SA. Excuses that the youth is impetuous is one thing- but at what age does one stop being a youth? At 30, you would expect to behave and be seen as an adult. It is frightening that he is getting away with inciting violence in front of the ANC leadership with no reprimand. This leads me to believe that they support it.

Have you guys seen how no matter what the ANC does or says the loyal supporters just follow. We the intellegent few try to argue with these idiots but to no avail. Leave these idiots and believe that TRUTH AND GOOD will eventually always beat LIES AND EVIL. I can understand the ANC supporters hating the DA because of appartheid BUT they have proved that they HATE anybody who does not follow like the sheep they are.
VG 11/18/2008 2:51:03 PM
I'm not sure I understand what the furore is over this man. Zuma has promised to try and rein him in, but the fact is that no one in the ANC has the power to remove Malema -they didn't put him there. So the choices Zuma faces is either to engage with him and attempt to guide him in the right direction (impossible?)or isolate him - with potentially violent consequences.
SF 11/18/2008 3:03:36 PM
I agree. Just one question. Why on earth would you believe Carl Niehaus?
Mojojo 11/18/2008 3:05:38 PM
You hit the nail on the head. "empty cans make the loudest noise" No one in South Africa makes more noise than Malema. And he proves you right by saying things that just show how empty his can is.
Shonilanga 11/18/2008 3:23:13 PM
When Cruella De Lille was asked on E News about our boy Juli, she said it is just Malemaphobia. To their credit E News pursued and had Pat on the mat - great viewing. You cannot defend the indefensible.
Viparo 11/18/2008 3:26:03 PM
Zapiro is a cartoonist. Malema the leader of the ANCYL. Did Zapiro threaten to kill for anyone? Can you see why it's different? Try again. How about now? nope. Still nothing ? Hmmmmmm. You're very right thou, Empty cans DO make the loudest noise.
Kenroid 11/18/2008 3:27:09 PM
This is becoming ridiculously hilarious!!!! Now they claim that Malema is misunderstood and being misrepresented by the media?!?! You have got to be kidding me.....this is a poor attempt to try and gain face! He refused to apologise, and has yet to apologise, for his statements! If I was 'misunderstood', I would apologise and point out the misunderstanding! Malema is a joke! I wonder if he will be a feature on Comedy Central???
Pangea 11/18/2008 3:33:54 PM
Last I looked Inciting Violence was a criminal offence, or am I missing something?
Carl Muller 11/18/2008 3:34:43 PM
When we were students 30 years ago. Nothing was wrong then. Why crucify the guy. Think back when you were young. We all did the same thing. We also said we will kill, but we never did. Saying something and doing it is two very different things.
WM 11/18/2008 3:35:27 PM
My understanding is that you hereby endorse Malema's comments? This attributes to political unrest you know, which impacts on our economy. Think a bit about this. How can one condone this? And what is this revolution you keep talking about? The war is over. Justice prevailed, we are all equal before the law my friend. That forces us to work collectively towards a better SA. Julius must fight his fight, but with diginity and integrity!
Metallica Man 11/18/2008 3:39:34 PM
Carl Niehaus finds it difficult to explain walking without putting some sort of political spin put on it! He would argue that the left foot and right foot are constantly getting ahead of each other for no apparent reason. Carry me instead he would say!
Lucky Ralawe 11/18/2008 3:43:48 PM
Malema's verbal diarrhoea is nothing close to freedom of expresssion. Read section 16(2) of the Constitution. His utterances are prohibited "propaganda for war";"incitement of imminent violence;" and "advocacy of hatred ..." You "will fight for his right to say it?" What utter rubbish!
Sipho 11/18/2008 3:46:24 PM
We are all human and sometimes we speak from the heart. Yes, Malema was right about Shilowa being a Security guard and irresponsible father. After the COPE guys cant stop to criticize Malema and Zuma, why cant they critisize them? I have never had people complain about the way Lekota incite hatredt towardthe ANC rom his members and almost anyone he can speak to. Let's look at everyone and their shortfalls.
ants 11/18/2008 3:50:30 PM
With all due respect, Malema is unable to understand simple things (as evidenced by his school report) - stuff that most people take for granted. Expecting him to understand the concept of statesmanship is frankly silly.
CK 11/18/2008 3:51:48 PM
Jabu you are the prefect example of an empty tin that makes the loudest noise. Really small minded if you were threatened by a cartoon.Shame. Juan where can I find Malema's results have to see those!!
BD 11/18/2008 3:53:16 PM
These are both the same people. But on opposite sides. You don't here people justify what Johan Nel did as right do you. Jabu Pule, you are a brainwashed morron for believing the excuses. ANC is not a church, we need proof to believe.
Jake 11/18/2008 3:53:43 PM
ANCYL elected this man and they support him and the statements he makes. You may not like him but they will not be apologetic about him. Personally I find little wrong with the statements he makes in public. I also dont think he is disrespectful to elders. As for him apologising, so many people in this country have a lot to be apologetic about. Mokaba chanted "kill the boer, kill the farmer" yet no one asked him to apologise and Nelson did not say much as president of the ANC.
m 11/18/2008 3:54:00 PM
If zuma cannot reign this boy in, or doesn't want to, for the sake of votes, then what's to stop malema from doing whatever he pleases? So who really is the big dog?
CTheB 11/18/2008 3:55:55 PM
So disrupting political meetings, making threats and so on is what you believe tolerance to be? Now there's a warped notion!
Jabu Pule 11/18/2008 3:55:59 PM
If Malema committed a crime then take him to court. All Malema did was to express his passion to defend the revolution against the imperialists. Fixing food prices, feed people to lions, mistreating farm workers, exploitation of marginalized, racism, crime will be agressively tackled by Malema come the next government. Malema keep up the good work, "make them run".
Joe333 11/18/2008 3:56:14 PM
You don't make sense. Why would you want fight to the death for JM's right to incite violence and political intolerance? Free speech carries responsibility!
Jacques 11/18/2008 3:58:59 PM
With regards to supporting Malema. Anyone who defends Malema is a complete and utter fool. While everyone here says he is a joke, we must guard that he one day rises to power. We will have another Mugabe or Hitler.
CK 11/18/2008 3:59:50 PM
LOL I found them...on google. Now that's hillarious!!! Dear o dear where will he lead the youth???
Ginger 11/18/2008 4:09:36 PM
How can Malema be misrepresented or misunderstood when what he says is shown live on tv. He promotes hate speech - I might think it was his youth - if he was 16 or 18 but he is not exactly a child. I was amused when somebody recently referred to him as Zuma's "mini me". I am thinking they are both much like Zanu-PF clones and not what SA needs. Bring in the diplomats and businessmen who want to grow our economy not just rule it.
SDJ 11/18/2008 4:13:25 PM
Julius Malema has the medical experts completely flummoxed. He is the only known living human that exists, walks, talks, eats, but does not have a brain.
ZOLANI 11/18/2008 4:13:54 PM
dont worry yourselves about this idiot, he does not repressent the real youth of the Country, Walk aroung Campus we all think he is a Idiot. Most of the real youth, want Harmony and leaders with integraty, No more of this old school bitterness
Joe333 11/18/2008 4:16:05 PM
He couldn't explain his way from a wet paper bag. I'm still waiting for him to explain why a white privileged Afrikaner boy joined Umkhonto we Sizwe. Perhaps he also wanted to kill like JM.
Errol 11/18/2008 4:19:43 PM
Jacob Zuma I challenge you to fire Malema.I guess you can't do that because he was the main one to get you selected in Polekwane.I'f I'm right.....Don't answer me....if I'm wrong ...please answer mw,I'll take up the challenge with you.By the way...I see see pictures of people looking like snakes

Stix 11/18/2008 4:21:43 PM
I cannot even vaguely comprehend the enormity of stupidity and utter foolishness of these ANC followers / Malema, Zuma fans. They either benefit from the corrupt, autocratic sorry excuse for a government or they are just plain..well dumb. Luckily i will never vote for them again..Misunderstood? errr right!

Johan 11/18/2008 4:43:49 PM
This is what the split in the ANC has led to. Malema is clearly representing the brainless mass; he has to keep on making the same kind of brainless noise to get the brainless attention he desires. Hopefully COPE (or the DA or ID) will be successful in drawing the more informed, intelligent, and anti-what-Malema-and-Zuma-represent vote.
Frank 11/18/2008 4:51:29 PM
Im in the land of warm beer & grey skies, but follow SA politics as close as I can. Can someone out there tell me (or us)what the people on a grassroots level/townships think about all this? After all, they are the masses last time I checked and most dont have the web to comment/make judgements etc. From past experience on elections, they believe the politician who they can most associate with, the most extroverted and who promises the world (but sadly delivers nothing after)Any takers?
AC 11/18/2008 4:53:12 PM
The competence and reliabity of the ANC as a whole, or its senior members are without question pathetic at best, as are their excuses of being misunderstood after every press conference or public address. They claimed today that the IEC sets the election date. It is declared by the president, in line with some legislation. The IEC is subject to that declaration. Just another example of that special club, called the ANC, that the idiot Malema, Zuma and buddies belong to.
fuzzy 11/18/2008 4:56:46 PM
How can you, a supposedly educated man, even consider to support such radical and violent utterances from this idiot called Malema. Shame on you! Zapiro's cartoon was brilliant, maybe not popular amongst the Zuma camp but certainly topical.
Greg 11/18/2008 5:03:21 PM
... is that in South Africa, despite useless leaders, we are not allowed to insult a person along racial lines or other, in lieu of defamation of character, but we can threaten to kill a man. We can insight violence, but we are not 'allowed' to be 'insulting'. Surely words of violence instigate acts of violence? Although an insult will hurt emotionally. Typical of the uneducated to act primitively. But only a fool talks when he has nothing to say...
UNCLE 11/18/2008 5:04:48 PM
This is what the old Malema, former "Terror" now the paragon of correctness Mosioua Lekota, called JZ at a rally in Orangefarm, did the media, Shikota sympathisers call him disrespectful..NO!!! FREEDOM OF SPEECH, RULES!!!AWAY WITH BOREDOM!!!
fuzzy 11/18/2008 5:07:58 PM
Lucky hit the nail on the head, Malema's incitements to violence are a crime, he should be charged. To quote President Kennedy is not applicable in this case.
croc 11/18/2008 5:10:26 PM
Guys plz excuse the guy he did after all pass matric age 21 & barely scrapped thru - as for the ANC i think behind close doors they are writtin his speeches cause we know he missed his classes, but plz dont try sell us that they have asked him to tone down? They are feeding him the info plz watch how most of what he says ends up commin true so be very afraid if u are heavily invested in this country bcoz cause he did say they wud eliminate all their opponents
Gesundheit 11/18/2008 5:11:08 PM
I'm guessing that would make Malema equivalent to an empty reservoir? His intellectual capacity is about that of an empty can though.
Jacques Viljoen 11/18/2008 5:21:08 PM
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE leave the ANC to let this loose cannon run his empty rhetoric. They are doing us a huge favour by alienating the realistic and objective voter. I would say they should give him more rope...
Joe333 11/18/2008 6:12:22 PM
30 years ago the chances were good that if you killed, you would be arrested, convicted and sent to jail or hanged. Today chances are good that you will get away. Unbelievable as it may seem, there are dim-witted ANC supporters out there that will take JM seriously. Free speech carries responsibility. JM is preaching violence and intolerance, very irresponsible. You cannot defend that!
JK 11/18/2008 6:17:38 PM
What are you trying to say? Are you promoting genocide? Against whom? Is this what they teach you when you join the ANC these days???
