'Too bad for cricket'

Dear Editor,

I am a cricket fan. I love the game. I love watching the game, especially live at stadia (though I manage this too sporadically for my liking). I am, however, concerned with the culture of exclusion that is creeping in at stadiums.

This culture stems not from spectators (who generally get on well with one another) but from the stadium owners (the unions). The ticket prices are reasonable, but the changing stadium rules concern me.

On reading the rules for Supersport Park in Centurion, I discovered that bringing your own beverages to the stadium is no longer allowed, yet food is.

The body requires liquids to remain hydrated, but now you're denying me the right to bring my two-litre water bottle into the stadium because you want to sell bottled water for horrendous prices? I am fortunate enough to be able to afford those prices, but what about those that are financially disadvantaged? Should they dehydrate, or drink out of the taps in the restrooms?

Since the domestic games are only televised on Supersport (which the poorer cannot afford either) you are effectively "banning" them from the games. So much for promoting and developing the game.

The stadiums had it right when they began banning spectators from bringing alcohol to the stadia, but they've taken a wrong turn here. Good luck to the Titans. I'll follow your progress in the news, but I will unfortunately not attend your games. I refuse to accept this prejudice.

I hope I will not be the only voice, but I suspect the usual "moan and accept" apathy of most other South Africans will win through. Too bad for cricket.

MT,
Centurion

Beer and Sport is like Pollen to a bee...i wouldnt go to live cricket matches with out beer...
SM 11/21/2008 2:09:59 PM
South Africans are being ripped off by their own people - in the UK we can bring our own alcohol to cricket - something like 2 pints of beer or a bottle of wine. And any amount of food and non-alcoholic drinks. But we do pay a lot for the actual tickets
Kenroid 11/21/2008 2:10:28 PM
what they are doing to make a buck! Although it could be due to the fact that some people might bring in a 2L "water bottle" that is actually vodka! Unlike uShaka...who confiscate any food or beverages before you go into their facilities!! You are in the sun and need to drink and cooldrink prices are R8...and water is R10!!!!! R10 for a 500ml bottle of water??? Yet they sell alcohol there as well, so that cant be the reason!
Les-Maada 11/21/2008 2:15:42 PM
We soccer fans are not even allowed to bring in a squeeze bottle & no alcoholic beverage of some sort is sold inside the Stadiam either (Its been like that for years now)and you think you have problems.??!!

I am a responsible drinker and I love watching sports, which is why I do it from home and dont go to stadiums. Better coverage and views in any case. Agree with your point though.

Its not about sport anymore, its a business now. Like if you go to the movies you may not take your own food or drinks in you must buy theirs even though it costs R25 for a 500ml coke. Crazy, greedy motherf*rs.
Fan 11/21/2008 2:33:27 PM
Sad news. I also refuse to pay the high cost of colddrinks and bottled water. Just lost another patron to the stadium.
Oom_Kosie 11/21/2008 2:33:44 PM
Take your own water and dare them to confiscate it. Go with all your friends, all carrying bottles of water openly. If they deny you entry, I can assure you it'll make headlines.

And before that the 2000 Olympics and 1995 world cup. It's also about protecting "official suppliers" and sponsors. Coke had sponsored the 1995 world cup, but Pepsi "ambushed" Coke by giving away tins of pepsi and pepsi t-shirts. JUst about every camera shot of the final ended up with Pepsi in it. So now the sponsors want to squeeze the competition and spectators till they bleed. During the 2003 CWC though the regulation was relaxed so that water in unmarked bottles was allowed in.
Big Bad Bob 11/21/2008 2:35:42 PM
They scheduled a Test match against Bangladesh to start on a Thursday. They clearly are not thinking of maximising ticket sales over the weekend or they'd have started it on Friday earliest.

Agree 100%. I stopped going to most games long ago for the same reasons. I still however, used to go to Centurion as you could at least park there. Besides, there's enough politics to watch everywhere else without having to fork out our hard earned cash to watch it at play! I do disagree with your comment that ticket prices are reasonable though.
Ben 11/21/2008 2:42:50 PM
said it better! Its disgusting! If at least the prices of food and drink was on par with regular shops. It is bloody extortion. Boycott them all.
Tsotsi 11/21/2008 2:55:01 PM
Will rather stay at home now! Thanks for enligtening me. My children play around and are thirsty all the time!
CTheB 11/21/2008 2:57:52 PM
The next step will be what some clubs have done (certainly in the past) - take the tap handles away so that no one can get water in the rest rooms. They can't use alcohol as an excuse for this ridiculous rule - if someone has a water bottle the alcohol will be detectable and they can simply ensure that any other beverages brought in are in sealed bottles.
Cricket fan 11/21/2008 3:32:47 PM
Couldn't agree with your more MT. It is rediculous to expect everyone to buy from the vendors at the ground. Why cricket is not on SABC is beyond me, how are kids meant to look up to heros of sport if they never ever see them just because they can't afford it!
CONCERNED 11/21/2008 3:37:59 PM
ALCOHOL SHOULD BE BANNED AT ALL SPORTING EVENTS BECAUSE THESE EVENTS ARE PROMOTED FOR THR FUN OF THE SPORT AND FOR THE KIDS THAT WANA GET INVOLVED AS WELL.WOT KIND OF ROLE MODELS ARE WE BEING TOWARDS OUR YOUTH BY DRINKING AND PERFORMING LIKE WOOLIGANS
Just Cricket 11/21/2008 3:39:14 PM
I agree with you fully MT. This is ridiculous. They are just exploiting us to the last cents in our pocket. What are they going to ban next? Sunscreen? Oops I gave them an idea. Just a thought, there are toilets, so one can get drinking water from there I suppose.
Sandelk 11/21/2008 3:51:12 PM
I tend to agree, I love going to a cricket match and bring my own water and food into the game - but that is the commercialism of sport and all sports are experiencing it... At least ticket prices for cricket are reasonable, unlike the rugby tickets.
