  • As one of News24's most prolific comment writers, the anonymous "MP3" has spawned a bit of a following from fans and detractors alike.

We caught up with "MP3" to find out what makes him comment as much as he does - and what he really thinks about all the things he comments on!

    1) Age, sex, location?

    24, male, Johannesburg

    2) You comment so much on News24. Don't you have a dayjob? What do you do all day?

    Yeah, I have a day job. I'm a C# developer (programmer).

    3) So what's with all the commenting on News24?

Helps to pass the time, and sometimes I believe that common sense is left out of some stories.

    4) Someone has suggested to us you could be Neil Wilson, of the crime expo website, because you comment so much and hide your identity? Is this true?

Have no clue who Mr Neil Wilson is. Is he the guy from Dennis the Menace?

    5) What subjects on News24 really get you worked up?

Issues like "crime isn't that bad" and people who moan about insignificant/silly/non-sensical/autocratic/feminists things.

    Articles like:

  • Grand spanking failure
  • Fire Fraser-Moleketi!
  • I'm a victim, says Cliff
  • The science of religion?
  • Concert schmoncert!
  • Circumcision not a cure

Some of the above articles I've commented on, but the comments weren't published. That's okay though. they were "in your face" anyway.

    6) Do you have a blog? Have you ever written for my.news24.com?

Not too sure if you can classify facebook as a blog. Blogs feel like too much effort... I don't believe I've ever written for my.news24.com.

    7) You come across as pretty pessimistic about the future of SA. Tell us once and for all, what's your opinion on this country of ours?

Haha, I do, don't I? But quite on the contrary I assure you. I absolutely love this country. Will probably die here in SA (old age or being shot for a cellphone, which ever comes first).

It's home for me, I've never been outside SA so this is a pretty biased viewpoint - some would say I do not know any better. But I believe I have a well rounded point of view.

I think though balance is needed. The government is set on "equality" but I feel there opinion of equal is different to mine. Corruption and crime makes this country look bleak. But it's first class in terms of diversity and nature wise and stuff. Beautiful country.

    8) Who do you want to be the next president of SA?

Tricky, as I see it, no one fits this task.

From the ANC? Mr Sexwale has a warm fuzzy feeling to him, although President Sexwale seems a bit unrealistic at this point in time. Thabo's unconstitutional third term is scary and Zuma is not a very good role model based on his shenanigans covered by the media of late.

As for a DA president? The country is simply not ready for this politically however I believe a stronger political opposition is needed for stability in SA so national leaders are made to answer for questionable policies.

    9) If you could change one thing about News24, what would it be?

I think a nice section of older articles in chronological layout, instead of linking related articles as a back-tracking facility to past stories.

    10) We think you enjoy the anonymity. Would you still say what you say if you had to use your real name?

I do enjoy the anonymity. But truth be told I'd still say what I wanted to. But my online nickname has been with me since 2000 and it's grown on me!

    Thanks MP3. Keep 'em coming!

      Dont hide
    13/07/2007 12:11
Why does MP3 hide behind some anonymity, and if he spends so much time analysing & commenting whilst holding down a day time job, would you employ him? Bruce - Bruce

      I like MP3
    13/07/2007 12:20
I like MP3, as most of his comments are what i think, and since almost half my comments doesn't get published, he normally say what i think As for the anonymity, i would rather say that SA people hate people who speak the truth, and mosat people can multitask, so holding down a day job while waiting for a program to compile isn;t that hard. - Dawid

      MP2.9
    13/07/2007 12:26
Enough of this celebrity B*S*. Come people let's get the articles coming. MP3, I'm not sure what the fuss is all about but good for you and enjoy the status. - FO

      Always thought so!
    13/07/2007 12:29
Finally, as I always thought, 'MP3' is a 'load of noise', and his opinions are clearly limited. Now I can reasure myself that his comments are set to 'Volume Zero' - Gazza

      15 seconds of fame
    13/07/2007 12:33
Sometimes dear MP3, when you get worked up about innocent columns that doesn't strike YOUR esteemed fancy, just close the window and get on with your job, really. No need to scratch at other people's eyes just because YOU didn't feel entertained or intellectually stimulated by a piece. Damn, now you even compelled me to send in my first antagonistic contribution. Sorry, I've better things to do, I know. - Jaco

      IN FULL SUPPORT OF MP3
    13/07/2007 12:49
I think MP3 is GREAT. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion if it does not agree with the 'masses', then TOUGH. I support him all the way, I really don't care what anyone else say. MOST people on this 'forum' use their company's internet so stop pretending to be such angels. U GO MP3!!!Why should you blabber out your PERSONAL details ? So that you can get harrassed? Safest to stay anonymous!!!! - Noddy

    13/07/2007 12:51
90% of my comments are also not posted, so I really feel that if at least MP3's comments get posted, that is EXACTLY how I feel, I support Dawid in that. Cool, we almost have a fan club her for MP3!! WELL DONE !! - Noddy

Quiet simple really, I'm a Network Engineer, IT guys really do have alot of time. All that needs monitoring is right on my desktop along with NEWS24, there is no gettting up to do anything or having to deal with customers, it's so simple it's scary... - Glenn

      Good or Bad
    13/07/2007 12:52
If someone has something to comment then great be it good or bad. MP3, voice your opinion as you want. Since everyone else does so who cares. Some are more opinionated so good for you. As long as we keep it real and to the topic. - Bear

      Nice touch
    13/07/2007 12:53
I think it's pretty cool that News24 would recongize a User this way. Shows that they're in touch with their audience and acknowledge an active member. No use making negative comments, just goes to show what type of person you are, and the rest of us are really not interested in seeing that. I hold a day job (don't most of us?)and I'm in here regularly myself (as are most of us), no hassles. - Kelvin

      Noddy
    13/07/2007 12:56
Noddy maybe you can start your own fan club. We comment on topics that is of interest to us. And yes, we all use our companies' internet, so what? Noddy get over your obsession with MP3 and start being creative, like actually writing an article. - FO

      Fan Club?
    13/07/2007 12:57
A "fan club" for a commenter to the exclusion of the "writers." How is it fair drawing all this attention to somone who just comments, have we forgotten the "Writers"?? - Sad

      Just goes to show..
    13/07/2007 12:58
Just goes to show what I already thought about him, he's a geek! I always had the feeling that the comments were from a geeky kid and now you proved it! Thanks News24! - Shez

      Kelvin & Noddy

Congrats! MP3 has got 2 clones. Enough already. - FO

just when i thought MP's head couldnt get any bigger..
    13/07/2007 13:03
some idiot has to write an article in his honour. the comments left by this person reak with arrogance (i mean he even gave a list of articles he's commented on). do you keep a log book with dates and tims of your contributions? everytime you leave a comment, with the obvious intention of portraying some feeling of self superiority, i feel my gag reflex kicking into overdrive. - mp3's mentor

      Interesting
    13/07/2007 13:11
MP3's comments are usually logical and well thought-out. The reason people choose to comment a lot is because of the utter nonsense that some people perpetuate as truths in both articles and comments. On a side note, if some commentors want to be taken seriously, I would recommend spelling and/or grammar lessons first. As the online world would say, "learn2english". Not a grammar nazi, but voicing an opinion in poorly constructed sentences involuntarily makes me think that the author is an idiot - Wernardt

      Nice One, News24
    13/07/2007 13:19
I don't necessarily like or agree with much of what MP3 says but it is nice that News24 is aware of who he is and is prepared to shed light on his identity if not identify him. For a youngster he seems to have a lot of confidence about him. - Niels
