SABC 'credibility is at stake'

South Africa Broadcasting Corporation credibility is at stake. With their recent withdrawal from South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef), many questions can be asked.

I am not sure whether the SABC is running an agenda to protect government officials but if that is conditionally true, then the SABC has become the mouthpiece for the government. They should not tell us what they think we should know because we deserve to be informed without any fear or favour.

How can SABC boss Dali Mpfofu say "the nonsensical view that the media is absolutely 'free' to trample the privacy and dignity of any citizen offends against the SABC's own values"? How dare a man of his calibre forget that the privacy of public figures is more limited than those who are ordinary citizens like me?

This is the reason the producer of Special Assignment quit from the SABC. Special Assignment was the only good SABC programme. Now that Mr Jacques Pauw has left SABC will be in limbo forever.

Their withdrawal from Sanef came amid allegation of invasion of the health minister's privacy. First and foremost it was in the public interest to know that a minister has misbehaved while in hospital.

I really don't regard South African journalism as vendetta. For now I am convinced to spell out that the SABC is in the wrong hands. This is for the same reason why we have seen Dali Mpfofu in the ANC policy conference. Now this trend by the government to influence the SABC's editorial wants to go to the press.

Then you should ask yourselves, South Africans, if such situation prevails, what is the difference of Zimbabwean media and ours is. In a democratic dispensation the media should be free from any government influences.

sabc is the mouth piece of the government, the are always singing praises for our pathetic anc led govenrment - olaf

      Here we go again...
    13/09/2007 14:43
The more things change the more they stay the same. Just as the hateful apartheid government controlled the SABC, so the ANC are doing the same. Hopefully that will be only similarity, or will it? - Dean Swift

      Totally Agree
    13/09/2007 14:56
I totally agree 100%. The SABC, just like parliament, gets its order from the ANC. It is very clear that a Mugabe style regime is being born. Good luck South Africa... - Gayle

      Your credibility is at stake.
    13/09/2007 14:59
Attacking the minister on her performance would have been the right route to take but thieving in the name of journalism and have those actions condoned by SANEF was wrong. It is rather ironic that in our parliament we have murderers who used the guise of SADF to kill. Mr. Thobela do not be swayed by popular thinking and actions. - Toto

      Its a world wide issue
    13/09/2007 15:02
Not much room to explain but Broadcast Coorporations world wide have always been the Mouth pieces of their govts.chec the BBC, CNN, ABC, all broadcast and are run with some sort of bias to the ruling party. What makes the SABC any different? If the ANC is voted out and NNP takes over it'll be just the same ol story. - 49cent

      anc = sabc
    13/09/2007 15:02
i think its time SABC say enough is enough to ANC or else give them an office at the sabc am sure they will love that,if you can compare there news with other private channels or station they don't give us full details, look at the rugby team selection anc got involved as usual, manto was seen as saying etv i don't want to talk to you, if it was sabc i can, why ? cause sabc will broadcast her story but still protect her image, she obviously feel at home with sabc. - tanyie

      SABC....
    13/09/2007 15:04
If SABC had agreed with what Sunday Times did the so called champions of free speech would've been pleased. The media's independence doesn't translate to "?ays right" and immunity to criticism. So I believe SABC must be allowed to take it's stance on issues as well like the Sunday Times. - Mlu

      sabc
    13/09/2007 15:05
Themba the most worrysome thing of this situation is that ,to my believe, our freedom of speech and the right of information which is part of our constitution ,forms a very important part of our young democracy's survival, were being ignored to protect those who is suppossed to help keep this democracy alive. - bertus

      Sinking SA

These are the same steps Rob took in Zim,we are the copy cats I believe. - Mark

      same style sabc-new masters
    13/09/2007 15:27
There is nothing new about this whole thing. The SABC was the mouthpiece of the NP in the bad old days, and now in the new bad days..it's the turn of the ANC to be their masters.. - Frank

      SABC and ANC-BC
    13/09/2007 15:28
That's why I have stopped watching SABC news sometime ago because I know it will be about Minister this; president that and ANC this; until Sport News. Mpofu; is paying for his deed (he was bailed out by the president on soccer rights saga) until he tried his worn out legal skills by going for arbitration. - Gwinya

      The SABC is falling apart
    13/09/2007 15:28
The SABC has being deteriorating lately, no wonder they lost some of the the key staff like Robert Marawa. This organisation need a new leader, Dali Mpofu is a failer - Jonny

      Brooha-ha
    13/09/2007 15:41
All this fuss, but generally the SA media have always been govt lackeys. They should take lessons from the UK media & has anyone watched Prime Minister's Questions on the BBC? Now THAT'S democracy: where even the head honcho gets a regular dressing down. SA politicians should be held to account like that. Aren't you sick of them treating citizens like naughty school kids or heinous traitors? We need more persistent investigative expos? Thank you to brave journalists who do their best. - Saffa

      SABC
    13/09/2007 15:42
Too bad we have people like you who have closed their eyes as to what is going on pity some people never realise that we were born african and we think african not as the commercial media does that is why for now we have forgiven and let whites enjoy the country push black africans too far there will be trouble. Dali Mpofu is simply being modest and good to all. - Sicelo

      TV License

      Sicelo...
    13/09/2007 16:01
Believe it or not, most white citizens were helpless to stop the Apartheid govt, much as we wanted to. It was only after long-term pressure from the international community that the NP govt caved in. A referendum in the mid-80's proved that most white citizens wanted democracy, but the NP govt said 'No'. Save your resentment for racist politicians of yesteryear & the current govt who watch SA bleed & deny, deny, deny. - Saffa

      SABC and the Government
    13/09/2007 16:06
My wife and i worked for the SABC for many years, and as a rooinek I was shocked at the amnount of Nationalist Party interference. It was a standing joke, at least in the Durban office, that Government microphones were always listening in, in the offices, in case anyone said anything politically incorrect. - Doug'O'Durban

      Welcome to the real world
    13/09/2007 16:07
It happens all over the world, son. In old democracies, young ones, weird ones and robust ones. The first rule of power is to have all your cronies in the boards of broadcasting corporations. So,whats new????The next gov will do the same.Black or white. You cant bew this naive - Jabulani

      SABC Forum
    13/09/2007 16:09
Go read through the forum on the SABC website and see ,, You will get a big eye opener , clearly and openly planning UHURU on there , this is just the next step to gear up for that and not to be liable to the international world - Bongani

      You dare threaten!!!!
    13/09/2007 16:13
I would just like to point out to Sicelo that I am also an african, I was born in the same land as you and I am WHITE. If you are willing to be a "sheep" for the sake of your government the only trouble I foresee is a nation full of zombies, carry on with your simple-minded way of thinking and soon SA will be like the rest of Africa, that is the people suffering while your precious government get rich and laugh at how dumb their "livestock" is. HA HA - Ha ha

I am prodly blaclisted by the SABC
    13/09/2007 16:14
Proudly blacklisted for refusing to even respond to their TV-license payment threats. Maoney to the SABC is money to the ANC. - TC

      Viva SABC
    13/09/2007 16:20
I find the SABC news much more comprehensive, developmental and full of optimism. I don't care if it is ANC or government mouth piece. If there is no tragedy to report, there will be no news on e.tv just like the New York Times, CNN, BBC...and the rest of the pathetic western media!! - Wiri
