The hearts of millions of South Africans are filled with pain, anger and sadness today. Lucky Dube was shot and killed in an attempted hijacking on Thursday night.

Lucky was a true legend of South African music. His dedication to peace, love and freedom rang true in the lyrics that magically resonated to millions across the world. If you have had the privilege of listening to his harmony, you would have been open to the elements to an eclectic sound, exposing you to political, deeply personal and social issues.

Lucky saw through the discrimination and problems we have in this country. He had the ability to take these issues and turn them into hypnotic beats that reverberated magnificence through the sounds of reggae.

Lucky is a brother of the same musical genius as Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and his excellent spirit will be remembered in my heart for many years to come. Songs like Prisoner, Trinity and The Way It Is, shaped reggae music globally. His music rang through the townships and homes in South Africa bringing with it emotions of freedom, peace and love.

His passion was set free on the wings of angels and his voice was crafted by the hand of God.
His beats and rhythm are created from the feet that walk the streets of Zion.
His love and passion is shaped by the blood of the people in South Africa.
He was rhythm, he was peace, he was Africa.
    A gift to his mother
    A gift to his blood
    A gift to Africa
    A gift to the World

Lucky's movement and rhythm is beating in my heart as I write this and the record that will hammer in my heart today is Think About The Children. This is relevant today as we need to remember the family of this legend.

Peace, love and freedom to Lucky Dube and his blood on this sad day. Your music has taken me to new highs and your passion has been planted in the hearts of many. Your family will be mourning your loss and that will be shared by the masses.

Thank you for your music, thank you for your peace, thank you for you Rastafarian movement that liberated and motivated the young blood in this land. Your blood has been spilled by the people you freed with your brilliance.

We have failed you brother, we have lost the fight. The war will continue, peacefully, lovingly and willingly.

      Condolences
    19/10/2007 11:30
such a sad day in the history of South Africa and for the music world globally. Lucky Dude was one of those artists to bridge the silliness in our society. A true legend and he will be deeply missed. I hope they catch those greed-ridden criminals and make an example out of them. Too many of our entertainers are being killed off. From Gito Baloyi to Brett Goldin... its a crying shame. This is another example of why government and society needs to work together, to make South Africa better. - Ryan Matthews

      I'm a slave (RIP Lucky)
    19/10/2007 11:31
Criminals are now "controlling" our lives. We are living in fear. What happened to ubuntu? The biggest problem that contributes to this decay is broken family values. Our parents protects us, even if we have done wrong. A person will kill and the next their parents will pay the bail money. The solution to most of these problems can be resolved with the help of parents and the society at large. Don't buy stolen goods etc.Police and the courts please do you part. Let's all stop this madness. - Lesetja

      senseless
    19/10/2007 11:35
my heart goes out to lucky's family and friends on this sad day. in yet another senseless killing we loose one of SA's great talents. allready i have heard for calls to have the death penalty brought back as if that is the solution to all our problems, only it is not. it will not stop anyone from commiting crime or murder because criminals dont expect to get caught, certainly not by our below par policeforce. - kitchenboy

      Lost of words
    19/10/2007 11:35
all i can is condolences to Lucky's family .. for a polo ...? cant beleave it ..!! - Seja

      Angry!!
    19/10/2007 11:36
What angers me more is that our so-called president offered his 'condolences' to Lucky's family! This is the president of the anc, the same party thet took away the death penalty, the same party that caused our justice system to collapse, the same party that lets out murderers out on bail. Mbeki is SUCH a hippocrit! We truely live in a sick sick country! - Juan

      Amen to that
    19/10/2007 11:37
I'd like to say R.I.P to the legend and may his family be strong during this difficult time. The criminals that are running the streets terrorising people must know that their days are numbered. We are tired of being prisoners in our own homes. People can't buy cars they love because skelms are gonna take them and their lives at once. Government, anyone please help. - Very Angry

      RIP Lucky
    19/10/2007 11:39
Bring back the death penalty!!!!! Maybe then will crime and acts like these not happen so often. - j

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 11:39
What a tragedy.....like Diana, like Elvis, like Lebo Mathosa, so loved and who would want to kill him. Terribly sad day. - Piet du Toit

      Sad Day
    19/10/2007 11:40
It is a sad day indeed that we have lost one of our most talented musicians to the disease called crime. How is it that we unite for the Bokke but for crime we do nothing but complain? This is the time to stop blaming each other and stand together to fight crime but we need government to help too. - Claire

      please turn off the lights
    19/10/2007 11:41
as long as government protects and shields suspect police commisioners and judges there will be little hope for improving the crime rate in this country, but then we can always leave if we dont like it, so, please will the last person to do so turn off the lights!! - kitchenboy

      Condolences
    19/10/2007 11:42
My condolences to Lucky's family. I am so very very sorry for you, especially to his children who had to witness this. Another sad sad day in South Africa where these greedy, sick bastards are ruining lives across the country on a daily basis. Let us all stand together, black, white, indian, coloured, chinese......... It is time we ALL stood up and said enough is enough!! Time for this sickness that is killing this country to stop. - Angela

      Shattered!
    19/10/2007 11:42
I am deeply shattered by this news. I grew up listening to Lucky Dube. I preach this all the time and one day hopefully someone will hear me.... we need to stop all our kak and come together and build this country. Enough of all this black-white-you did this - you did that... PLEASE!!! Work with the police, bring these criminals to justice, put them away so we can get about our business - Let's just please live. - A DJ

      When will it stop
    19/10/2007 11:42
My deepest respect and condolences go out to the Dube family at this very sad time. I am so so so sad and angry that a man of this stature had to die in this manner. At a time when we should be rejoicing and looking forward to a RWC victory we have to be tainted by this senseless act. May God have mercy on South Africa and it's people. - Nicky

So Lucky, but not on 18.10.07
    19/10/2007 11:44
I loved the brother. I am 60 and have all his CD"s. What an outporing of brotherlove, happiness, harmony and joy he gave us. I have been crying all morning. THIS IS JUST TO MUCH TO COMPREHEND. I travel all over the world and returned on Tuesday morning again, just to go in my jeans and T-Shirt to a funeral. Yesterday I was told of a friend who was murdered. We are being slaughtered like animals by animals. Lets all toot our carhooters for one minute every day at 1800h. SHOUT NO MORE! - Alicia

      RIP
    19/10/2007 11:46
R.I.P Lucky Lucky Dube... A true son of the soil. Now is time for SA to rise up and face this madness. - RS4FAN

      Loony Juan
    19/10/2007 11:47
If we dedicate this column to expressing condolences to the Dube family, then all's good. But if we deflect attention like the loony Juan is beckoning us to do with his poor English usage and spell-check-challenge diatribe, then so be it. Did the crazed Juan expect Mbeki not to offer condolences? And is the unconstitutionality of death penalty an endorsement of crime (esp. murder)? Goes to show what goes on in the minds of some mentally unbalanced of our compatriots, like loony Juan has proved. - nzs

      Peace B with You Maan
    19/10/2007 11:48
Sad news indeed, I & I friends will always remember your contribution to our great country. May Jah give you peace & a wonderful rest - My Sincerest condolences to the Dube Family. Respect!!!!! - Sheldon Vorster

      Goodbye Lucky

A legend,an icon,a matchless talent stilled for eternity.Come on all you bastard fat-cat arsehole politicians!!!Stop the murder of OUR leaders.OUR role models!Charles Ngaqula you are a useless waste of breath - do your bloody job you pansy. The struggle is over now YOU get over it.How many more Lucky Dube's will it take before you act? - Sean

      Crime
    19/10/2007 11:50
Day in and day out our fellow citizens are killed (black, white, indian, coloured) yet esteemed Mr NkQula says we must whine blah blah blah till we blue in the face or else leave... He should have been fired for making such a comment - this shows a total lack of concern for his fellow citizens. What kind of a leader is he??? What is being done to protect and curb this waive of crime???? Fire the SWINE!!! - Black

How About All The Murdered Farmers?
    19/10/2007 11:50
It is unfortunate to read about the violent death of such a talented South African. One just wishes though that the same level of public and media sentiment could be expressed whenever farmers, many of them aged and defenceless, are attacked and butchered in the most savage and repulsive way on a regular basis. - Lynn

      R.I.P
    19/10/2007 11:50
A touching tribute Aiden, he was one of very few musicians with no scandals,a quite, respectful man.I rate his album 'The Way It Is'as the best, that touches one's soul. For the rest of us what is going to happen to us? GOD help us all. - Godfrey

      am out of here
    19/10/2007 11:50
I donot even feel any emotions because of how low our standards have gotten as a country. In one week, would have been Ryk neethling, would have been Lee-ann Manas but unfortunately was also an Actor on Soul City. I am only 23 and the only thing on my mind is TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS PLACE. With the loss of Lucky Dube, I have lost all love for south africa. - young black

      Stand up!
    19/10/2007 11:51
People! The only thing we can do is NOT to vote for the scum running the country again! I blame theire inaction on crime for this 100%. - Juan

      True legend of SA music
    19/10/2007 11:55
It is not only today that millions of South Africans are filled with pain, anger and sadness. The pain and anger has always been there "no urgument about it", when it will stop, only the devil knows. Some people enjoy the luxury of bodyguards. Who ever said death penalty must be done away with must think again. Condolences to the Dube family and to all those South Africans who find themselves in the same situations. - Rams

      devastated
    19/10/2007 11:56
I am devastated. It was through him I discovered the joy of reggae music. He was an icon of peace and justice. These terrible killers probably only found out later who they had shot. And all this for a car. It's horrifying. - Helena

      No Aiden, Mbeki has failed.....!
    19/10/2007 11:57
The ship of fools that governs this abberation is to blame. Led from the front by a spineless incompetent bigot, the circus that is parliament has brought us here. They live 5 star lives at our expense, while the people who pay for the ivory towers are butchered. BRING THE DEATH PENALTY BACK NOW!!!!!! - Guy

      Lucky was the man
    19/10/2007 11:57
I loved his music and his sentiments (especialy about the taxman). He was a true icon of our times and will be missed. The hijacker tried to rob from him, but ended up robing the country of one of its most talented sons. - Doorboot

      too bad
    19/10/2007 11:57
too bad the man that his music bring joy and happiness to me has gone too painfull. My condolences to Lucky's family. I am so very very sorry for you, especially to his children . - britico

      Dube
    19/10/2007 11:58
My heart bleeds for his family as it does for the hundreds of others he was not the first and will definately not be the last, ANC government it is time to sit up and take notice, get off your fat backsides and do something. - South African

      Government reaction
    19/10/2007 11:59
So once again the President makes as if he cares by giving his condolensces. Well he is off on another joyful overseas trip, together with lots of other government officials, while a Nation mourns. Our government have turned our backs on us and will continue to do nothing about crime, of that you can be guarenteed. - Steve

      enough
    19/10/2007 12:00
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH THIS CRIME! TIME FOR EVERY SOUTH AFRICAN TO STRIKE UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT DOES SOMETHING ABOUT THE BORDERS, THE CRIME, THE CORRUPT COPS. WHY CAN'T WE GALVANISE AGAINST CRIME THE WAY WE DO FOR SPORT!!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! - Jenny

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:00
I think enough is enough. His family has been robbed of a loved one; we have been robbed of a great entertainer. Bring back the death penalty, so that the punishment can fit the crime! ENOUGH! - Dee

      RIP
    19/10/2007 12:00
Rest in peace Lucky Dube, yes we will miss you, our deepest respect and condolences to the entire family, Lala ngoxolo Dube elimthende, Mtima, Nyamatane' - Thomas Dube

      Let us kill these criminals
    19/10/2007 12:00
Should we all buy guns and declare war on these criminals? It does not matter where you are coming from (ask Bheki Cele the minister of safety and security in KZN), these criminals are hitting very hard. I am sick and tired of these bunch of people who are terrosing us.Maybe its time we join forces black or white, poor or rich and march each an every corner our streets declaring war on these criminals. - Very very ANGRY

      When will it end?
    19/10/2007 12:01
I am incredibly saddened to hear of the senseless and untimely death of oneof SA's greatest artists. All my condolences to his family and friends. Farewell Lucky! Today I am ashamed of my country, the government is failing us, we are not truly free. We are asked to help government but our hands are tied. Criminals have more rights than we do. Too many of us are being killed - white, black, coloured. I fear for the future of our children! - Charles

      Lucky
    19/10/2007 12:02
All of us are saddened by this loss. It goes to show that contrary to popular belief, criminals do not target white people or whites are not the only one feeling the pinch of crime in this country. We all suffer people. Rather than blaming the government and poor Mbeki for every mishap, let us learn to share our sadness and work together to find a way out. Let this not be another opportunity to take a swipe at the government and Mbeki. They are affected by the crime too. - phalo

      Hang them..
    19/10/2007 12:02
What a lost. Why care for criminals that don't value life. I say hang them! Any party out there who will bring back the death penalty are going to win with a landslide victory. - Martin

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:02
What a sad sad loss. I am not really a reggae fan I must confess, but I admired Lucky for his strife for peace in this country. May you rest in peace you will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family. To quote *we have failed you brother, we have lost the fight* - Carol

      Tragedy wrapped in disgust
    19/10/2007 12:02
The deaths of great and innocent people, such as Lucky, are just eye-openers to which way our beautiful country is going. Our government & police system are useless at protecting South Africans, they stand in the same courtyard as the criminals of this country. My deespest sympathy goes to Lucky's family and to all those that have lost a loved due to crime.May God be with you. Let us as South African people, stand together and fight these disgusting specimans of humans.Bring back the death penalty!!!! - KIRSTY

      Dear NZS
    19/10/2007 12:05
Yes I do find it sick that mbeki offered his condolences, when he himself is in a position to REALLY fight crime in this country, but he does absolutely nothing! Mbeki himself is to blame, but he has the cheek to offer condolences. I bet you he will sing a different tune about the death penalty when his wife is murdered! He is truely a sick man! - Juan

      Speechless
    19/10/2007 12:07
If the justice system in this coutry was up to scratch, we would not have such senseless killings, life would be wonderful. Now we live in fear, because some barbaric, stupid thugs think this world belongs to them. Bring back the death penalty and make SA a better place!! Sick and tired of living in fear. RIP Lucky. - Pule

      Bad luck

      Lucky Dube's sad demise.
    19/10/2007 12:07
Sincerest condolenses to the Dube family and friends. Young Dube, Be strong!! I challenge Mr Mbeki and the rest of the government to live without their armies of guards and live like the rest of us in fear. If any of them get harmed in any way by these senseless crimes, then maybe something will be done about the attrocious crime rate in this lovely country of ours!!!! - Jeremy

      Salutations
    19/10/2007 12:07
Lucky, I salute you! May you rest in peace. I can only hope that our so-called President and his merry group of suckers-up wake up to the reality of South Africa. How many more must die, how many more children must suffer before they wake up? We lost another legend to the growing list of those killed in the prime of their lives. To visit the family should not be necessary, be pro-active. My condolences to his family! - CJD

      Indictment on state of society
    19/10/2007 12:07
I'm angered by the senseless killings that plague our country taking away the nation pride. Its a pity that for us citizens it takes a neighbours child being mutilated for 'muti' or a friend killed for a car or a loved one being infected with HIV to notice the real extent of the social ills we're faced with. Lucky's death should be an indictment on us citizens as to the active roles we should play in fighting crime but above all a vote of no confidence on our safety ministry... - Mpumi

      Fire Selebi
    19/10/2007 12:10
My heart goes out to the Dube family. The first time I saw Lucky play was at the Rainbow concert when Mandela was released. Ironic, all the years of aprtheid rule did not kill him! Get rid of the useless bosses in charge of the police now. It is time for Selebi and a whole bunch of other idiots to be replaced by respectable and proffesional citizens of this country who will make it their duty to fight crime. - Antelope

      sad indeed!
    19/10/2007 12:11
What`s also sad is now all of a sudden Pres Mbeki wants the nation to stand together against crime, the very man that said crime in this country is a perception. Why the sudden change of attitude? - fatman

      Shattered

Words alone fail me. Lucky, l will miss your live shows in Zimbabwe. My to smpathy to your "family" - Joan

      RIP Lucky
    19/10/2007 12:13
I dissagree with you.. The New SA where only the criminals are free. We lock ourselves in our houses afraid to go out at night because of these criminals..That is not freedom to me..Can't we take the goverment to court for not protecting us, as it is their job...Our taxes pay for it!!!!!!!! My condolences to Lucky's family... - Rita

      Criminals in power
    19/10/2007 12:14
As long as criminals are running the country, criminals on the streets will also rule us. Take the car and leave me alone. This is one stupid criminal. Criminals your days are coming - Papi

      Will it ever end..?
    19/10/2007 12:16
A sad, sad day for us all indeed. My sincere condolences to the family. A while ago our President, Thabo Mbeki, was commenting on what he called 'a perception of crime in the minds of a certain group'. Our Minister of Police were ranting about people 'who can whinge until they are blue in the face' and urged them to leave the country if the are unhappy about the crime levels. Our Chief of Police, Selebi, has a cloud of suspicion over him. On which planet are these guys living? - Eugene

Not only Lucky but all of us
    19/10/2007 12:16
Our government has through incompetance, ignorence and arrogance failed us all. Crime is out of control. - DG

      R.I.P Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:17
I was deeply saddened to hear of the gunning down of SA reggae icon Lucky Dube. It is a fact that crime is out of control but people should get it into their brains that there is NO WAY the death penalty will return. This is simply because it is outlawed by our Constitution. To bring it back, we would need to amend the Constitution, which is not an easy thing to do. We need other ways of tackling crime. - Bulelani

      Sad Day
    19/10/2007 12:17
I feel that it is a very sad day when we loose a legend like Lucky, especially to crime. Lets pray Lucky's legacy lives on and that the events of his death wake some leaders up in this country to the serious problem of violent crimes. Lucky Dube, we will miss you. - Garth

      Death rate
    19/10/2007 12:18
We will miss you. He was one of the 50 people that was killed yesterday. Think of all the other families as well. Today there will be another 50. And tomorrow and so on. An average of one every 30 minutes. As you are reading this somebody in SA is being killed or/and raped. - Stats

      Goodbye Reggae Legend
    19/10/2007 12:20
Goodbye, the son of the soil. We have been robbed by crime once more in thjis country, what a tragedy. May the Lord be with Lucky's family, friends and all South Africans. Let's unite against crime. I am definitely sure that in one way or another those who commit crime are known to us. Please take action and report these social misfits. My heart is bleeding with anger and Sadness. Rest in Peace Lucky, You shall be remembered Always. - K Mosobe

      sad!
    19/10/2007 12:20
Resources and manpower is being wasted by persuing a journalist...while criminals roam freely and kill with impuinity...it sickens me!!! - boyzie

      South African roulette
    19/10/2007 12:21
The game should not be called Russian roulette but rather SOUTH AFRICAN ROULETTE. It is a matter of time before you number comes up. - Sick of it

      Hang the Government!!!
    19/10/2007 12:22
I was never one to be a fan of Reggae but Lucky was the best. SA have now lost an icon of such influencial importance to our people. His music was everywhere and for everyone. Hope those bastards in parliament and the presidency are now happy!! Mbeki can take his condolences and shove it!! To the Dube family: may you be proud, he will be remembered! My condolences. - Win

      Tragedy
    19/10/2007 12:22
What a Tragedy, if this does not hit home to our pathetic government I am afraid nothing will. In fact this is an ugly thing to say but until something like this happens to some high level government officials I can?t see them standing up and taking responsibility! Forget about the Rugby Thabo Mbeki ? in the time you are gone 150 more incident people would have been murdered ? say and fix the mess your government is making in this country. Sad - warren

      Very Sad day indeed
    19/10/2007 12:22
People fought and died for freedom. Now we are fighting for security. How can we be a nation with peace when criminals seem to be the ones ruling our lives.Thabo Mbeki is a hypocrite,He fired Jacob Zuma under suspicion of corruption but he cannot fire Selebi who is a friend with a mafia. This picture is wrong.I blame Mbeki,Nqakula and selebi for not protecting south africans. We are losing friends and families through crime.Lucky Dube died because crime is not taken seriously.RIP Lucky - Thabs

      I will miss you.
    19/10/2007 12:24
I have listened to and loved your music. You are child of God, and I know you are at HIS right hand. They have slaughtered your body, but your Soul, Music and Memories, they could not take. JAH BLESS YOU LUCKY DUBE. YOU WERE A MAN AMONGST MEN. WE WILL MISS YOU MY BROTHER. PHUMULE KAHLE BHUTI WAMI - Peter Ferreira

      'GUVMENT' is IGNORANT!
    19/10/2007 12:25
The death penalty would be the punishment for the crime, and although I am in favour of it, our problems do not simply revolve around HOW we punish these monsters. It has to do with the fact that between our police and legal system, most of these criminals are never even caught, and if they are they escape! This government's ignorance will destroy SA. Maybe the only wake-up will be when this kind of thing happens to the family of Thabo! - pissed off

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:27
Lucky Dube became an icon in South Africa, as an Idol and fighter for the rights of all South Africans in his unique way, that touched all of us, with his humor, music and open personality, will be missed, his absence will leave a huge emptyness in our country. Even Thabo Mbeki passed his condolensess, we must fight crime together, Thank you Mr. Mbeki for this positive remark, I hope that this insedent has opened more eyes, so that crime can be controled, but from the top. Condolenses. - Hennie Thompson

      Shocked but.........!
    19/10/2007 12:27
As a Whitey I am not paricularly fond of "black" music but Lucky Dubes music I liked and enjoyed whenever I listened to him. Now many people are shocked about this absolutely senceless killing. The killer will never be found due to our totally useless Police Services Department. It is just a pity that the majority of those who are shocked by this brutality will still vote ANC next time around! - Antianc

      Sick of the fighting
    19/10/2007 12:27
Juan please go push your politics somewhere else. A great man has died for no reason but a bloody polo and it is time for a United front. The Springboks must wear reggae bands tomorrow for Lucky and we must stop the fighting in order to start the fight. - me

      What Crime?
    19/10/2007 12:29
What a great artist we have lost - South Africa is a poorer place because of this? I Sincerely hope Thabo Mbeki, Jackie Selebi, Robert McBride and the rest enjoy there overseas jaunts, while the country burns. I keep hearing from this lot "If you dont like it leave", but where are they all the time? - nick

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:30
I wonderhow the person who killed him is feeling right now? For a Polo indeed?? What did he do wrong to you? You have spoiled all our day inthe whole universe. We will catch you. Please bring back death penalty. Family = we are with you in prayers. Only God knows how to comfort you. We love you so much - Nomsa

      Somebody send this to Mbeki...
    19/10/2007 12:31
Someone pleasse send these posts to the President. His quote in the paper after the headlines "Mbeki gets tough on crime" all he says is "the public must tackle the scourge of crime" !!!!!! WTF? Pathetic. The Public??? We do face it. Every day. The governement must do their bit. Bring back the death penaly. Allow citizens to protect their families. Give the power back to the law abiding citizen and take it from the scum that prey on South Africas soul. RIP Lucky Dube. God Help Africa. - Nick

    19/10/2007 12:31
I remember as a child going to watch a soccer match (was a cup final if 'm not mistaken) and Lucky Dube performed live just before the game. He was simply incredible on the day and had the entire stadium in raptures. I always remember that day as one of those special memories I still hold from childhood. Rest in peace Mr Dube. - VLS

      Positive Suggestions
    19/10/2007 12:31
What is the good of positive suggestions? Look at Parliament. Every time the DA makes positive, constructive sugegstions (usually against the tyrannical, abusive and corrupt ANC majority) they are called backward racists. Nothing will help until the current crop of ANC leaders (mainly racist and elitist returned exiles) becomes too old to rule. But by then it will be too late and we will all be either dead at the hands of criminal violence or be starving like those still left in in Zimbabwe. - Alan

You and your sorry ass condolences
    19/10/2007 12:32
Yes, everyone of you. WE are the guilty people because we allow this type of thing. The only time we act is when somebody special (like lucky) gets killed. Then we all write tributes and we cry and say "oh that's so sad". Bullshit. What about the wives, husbands and children who lose loved ones every single day due to the scourge of crime, yet we say "the ANC is working to make it better", "the police are doing their best". All talk and no action. Cry me a !@#*!ing river. - Wernardt

Mbeki SHOVE your condolences and DO something!!!!!!!! - There's NO WAY I'm voting anc again! I am sick of crime! Sick of it!! NO MORE! - James

      SA's Lucky star
    19/10/2007 12:35
I remember when I was a kid he used to sing I am a prisoners and did not actually know why he was singing about being a prisoner. In retrospect prior to 94 and post I knew what he was talking about in his music, I have to say you do not find any other musician in South Africa who captures people's minds and hearts like he did. During the days of white rule he brought out the frustration of black into song and people gave him that respect because he internationalized the SA struggle. - Linda Ngcaba

Suggestions..build capacity to handle all these criminals
    19/10/2007 12:37
    How many more T-Bos..i suggest we build more capacity(prisons,justice system,law enforcement),pay better,then harsher penalties... - Fed-up Rekgathetse

      RIP The Legend (Lucky Dube)
    19/10/2007 12:37
How do we kill a man that kept the country ALIVE when apartheid destroyed us Black people. May your Soul rest in peace Brother, to your Family God will reveal his maricles to you be Strong. PEACE - Gift

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:37
My heart truly goes out to his family. Don't blame the hijackers for this though, Dube was killed because our government constantly fails to protect it's citizens. How many more have to die before we finally do something about it? - Nick

      BROKEN HEARTED CONDOLENCES
    19/10/2007 12:38
I would like to send my condolences to the Dube Family. I Pray to the All Mighty GOD above that the people responsible for the murder of LUCKY be caught and punished. RIP LUCKY - Lesley

      Graham, I have a suggestion...
    19/10/2007 12:39
...firstly Mr. Mbeki must acknowledge that crime is a BIG problem in SA. Give us hope Mr. Mbeki, don't give hope to the criminals. Maybe the death Lucky Dube will help the president realise this... - JONNY

      I HATE THIS HOLE
    19/10/2007 12:40
Firstly sincere condolences to Lucky's family. What gets me the most is that his kid had to see this CRAP go down... One question for the people in power who actually reads this (hoping they can read) What does it take to change the ESSENSE of man!? Time is the answer BUT HEY GUESS WHAT you've had years and years to pull your finger outa your asses... PLEASE FALL OVER AND STINK cause you're already dead inside... You do not govern... You never have and you NEVER will. **** THIS GOVERMENT! - SICK OF THIS!

It's no longer a case of IF...
    19/10/2007 12:44
It is a case of WHEN it will happen to you. I can no longer take that chance. I HAVE to get my loved ones out of this God-forsaken country before it is too late. It is the least I owe them, as much as I love this country. RIP Lucky - John Fox

      Good luck, Lucky
    19/10/2007 12:44
Your murder has touched me very deeply,as your music did when I was young. You were a bridge between me and the black people I share this beautiful country with and yet you have now been taken, one of the few uniters left here.May you reach Zion, peace be with your family. - me

      Still loony, Juan
    19/10/2007 12:45
By "REALLY" fighting crime, what d'you mean, Juan? How callous for you to even fantasize and express wishful thinking about the murder of another human being! This actually points to the instability I have referred to earlier. No, death penalty'd still be unconstitutional, whether it's the high-cheeck-boned, eccentric and hyperactive DA leader, a farmer in the rural areas, or anyone for that matter. And by the way, condolences should still go to the Dube family, despite your thoughtless vitriol. - nzs

      South Africa, dead and dying
    19/10/2007 12:48
I need to say this. The comment about poor Mbeki who is also touched by crime. Hell, I hardly have words. The only way he is touched by crime, is to keep his criminal friends and comrades out of jail, and throw those that want to expose them into the dark. If Lucky's death, yesterday can start a revolution of revelations about and against crime, I am sure he would sing a song of joy. PLEASE, EVERYBODY SAY WHAT YOU KNOW. YOU ARE OUT THERE. PLEASE HELP US. LETS UNITE AND BECOME ONE NATION. - Alicia

      CRY FOR ME SOUTH AFRICA
    19/10/2007 12:48
Our skilled labour is leaving SA for fear of the violence. Our precious culture and people like Lucky Dube who strived to make SA a better place is also being destroyed, or plainly put, killed. With skill and culture "departing" from our Country, voluntarily and even involuntarily, what's left? The Government should not wait until there is no turning back! I'm afraid it might already be reaching that point...PLEASE MBEKI...DO WHAT YOU WERE CHOSEN FOR AND PAID FOR! JUST YOUR JOB!!! - S redgard

      Unimaginable Loss!!
    19/10/2007 12:49
When the dark and wicked cloud hangs over our heads, why and for God's sake why do we fold our arms and not smell the tragedy befalling our hard fought dispensation!! Did God forsake us the day our Motherland was pronounced free! Rest in peace Lucky, u awakened the emotional wounds i suffered during during Peter Tosh's death! - Freddy Lesoof

      Wake up Mbeki !
    19/10/2007 12:49
Mbeki, we have had enough ! I hope you enjoy the rugby whislt you are sitting there surrounded by your hordes of security guards (paid for out of our taxes). When are you actually going to do something other than hand out condolences and insist that crime is just a "perception". For the love of God , South Africa and all South Africans helps us fight the scourge. Show us that you do actually care. - Shattered

      Yeah...
    19/10/2007 12:49
I feel no more sense of loss of Dube than for every other citizen that suffers every *%$#$@#% day. It really is a sad state of affairs. You should ask his family, Charles, about whingeing. - brandon

      Lucky Dube
    19/10/2007 12:52
The day we all stand up against crime is the day we all stand together against them letting us down. The Goverment is letting the people of this country die at the hands of a few. When we were black against white it took years to come together and end apartheid. BEWARE the day all the people turn against you (The so called leaders) you will burn and die in the streets like Lucky Dube did last night. I say remove those who causes us to suffer under crime. RIP LUCKY YOU ARE IN A BETTER PLACE NOW. - WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN

      The real problem
    19/10/2007 12:53
We may employ 100,000 more police women/men today, but it would not help to fight the crime. Crime is about a person who has no respect for another person's feelings, his belongings and his life (ie rape, theft and murder). We all in the RSA should from now on learn our children this respect for another person. Even if it is a long term project - this is the only way to stop the crime. - Observing
