YOUR STORY
It's about more than victory
22/10/2007 11:51 - (SA)
Ndumiso Khoza, News24 User
Like most South Africans, I was thoroughly excited and jubilant of the way the Springboks dispatched the Poms and captured the Webb Ellis trophy once again. What I loved most about this triumph is how it united the country in celebrating her splendour and wonders when we needed it most.
Most of us are unhappy about many things happening in our motherland. Mention crime, Jackie Selebi and Vusi Pikoli and a huge amount of anger and frustration boils inside many of us. And what's worse than the recent events leading to the tragic death of the iconic Luck Dube.
The saddest thing is that Lucky, who a couple of thugs saw fit to take the life of for a mere vehicle, did more to highlight the plight of many South Africans than most people. He did his best to remove many disparities, and did his best to allow us to see each other as a truly united people. Listen to tracks like Different Colours/One People and one is spurred by the profound vision of this remarkable, world renowned South African musician.
Moments like these
When the Boks were proudly demolishing England, most of the country was united in celebrating this great feat. It is in moments like these where you are able to see all South Africans from all walks of life forget, even if temporarily, about their disparities, and treat one another like the brothers and sisters they are.
As Madiba has echoed, our country is a winning nation. And although a "mere sport" is the only good news we can celebrate, I believe all of us can create similar moments worthy of such celebrations.
The point is not to just have fun and be happy about winning anything. I would like to see a moment where we can celebrate just being who we are. Where we no longer blame anyone for anything that has happened to us but instead accept that as different as we are, it is our diversity and uniqueness that makes us exceptional.
By watching people like John Smit and his troops overcome all odds to reach their ultimate dream of being World Champions, our nation should have the confidence to rise above the worst atrocities that have been committed to us as a nation and continue to plague us to this day.
What a reminder
Issues like crime affect all of us who claim to love this country equally. The blaming game benefits nobody and I personally feel it is time that we all take responsibility for the kind of country SA will eventually become.
I truly love this country, every single thing about it; because of the good and in spite of the bad. And it is through this love that I would like to urge all South Africans to celebrate just being part of this country. For the more we can do that, the more we will contribute to winning fights against HIV and Aids, poverty, crime and all forms of discrimination.
I trust that we can do this, for as soon as we pay attention to the pride and love that we have for this country, the less we will ever let anything other than exceptional happen to it. We can become a united winning nation in every way.
The Springboks have once reminded us how proud we can be as a nation, and how united we can be. Once again they have done that, and I hope this time, we can use this in shaping the next phase of our growing nation.

Change 22/10/2007 12:04
Dude, the change has to come from within regardless of how many times you flog this horse. Living by example and being the change is all the hope we have left, and even then we not guaranteed the outcome either. The hatred and greed run deep..... once the dust has settled we will be back at each others throats - which is so extremely sad. Unite dammit!!! Everyone is sick of this bickering already!! - A DJ |

Nice read 22/10/2007 12:04
Ndumiso, if everyone felt the same way you do we would not have any major problem areas in SA. It was a great weekend, let's build on it. - Stefan |

A Nation Wins 22/10/2007 12:07
Very good article! For one small moment in time, this was a nation united.A nation charged with positive energy. Now the challenge will be to build on that energy and create a more positive mindset in all walks of life.A time for REAL South Africans to stand up and be counted.
However, I still dont think that Mbeki should have been wearing eddie Jones' blazer, after all, he's done #)&%@ - all for rugby!!!Give Eddie the blazer - Sean |

RWC 2007 22/10/2007 12:09
Well said, brother! - Christo |

too good to be true. 22/10/2007 12:13
You and I feel that way. JUST ONE PROBLEM, the government and Rugby SA do'nt share our sentiments. They celebrated one day, now Stofile is already demanding transformation. They are two-faced, pretend to be happy for the Bokke, but already pointing fingers at a 'too white team'. They can all go to hell. Ordinary members of the public' want to unite and want to work together, but the Govt will see to it, that they keep on inciting people across racial lines. - Ballyhoo |

WELL SAID!!!! 22/10/2007 12:15
You echoed my sentiments Ndumiso. The politicians should leave us alone, we will unite without them. With them unfortunately we will keep on being divided. Things like the rugby, cricket, soccer, everyday life....those are all things that unite - until a politician gets his greedy hands on them. - J.O |

Grats Boks, go NZ 22/10/2007 12:34
Congrats go to the boks, but as from next year ill support the All Blacks. They wished for SA to win against England, so with their support recently they've gained a new supporter. I refuse to support the SA rugby team, it's going to be a team of race and not a team put together for their skills. Not that we care if there's 5 blacks, 5 indians,5 chinese, 5 coloureds, 5 whites? When sport gets mixed with politics, you know it's in for shit.
Cheers Boks, You did well. - WoC |

I don't care... 22/10/2007 12:34
I don't care what colour the team is for crying in a bucket!!!!!! I want to see a winning team, which we have. If someone can show me a better black lock that Victor or a better fullback than Percy, let them play I have no problems with that at all, but for gods sake lets just leave the politics away and let this team celebrate it's mammoth acheivement and hope common sense prevails. Otherwise SA rugby will die after this RWC.

Totally Agree 22/10/2007 12:39
I wish everyone felt the way you do. Nice article. Government need to focus on the things that is their responsibility and what we pay them to do. Let the rest of us do what will come naturally and unite. - warren |

Yes brother! 22/10/2007 12:41
You have just written everything I feel! Makes me so so happy to read this, and really rekindles all my positivity for our amazing country.
Just one comment on some of the comments made above - we can blame the government, politicians, SA rugby as much as we want, but the point is that WE (each one of us) have the responsibility to grow and unite our nation and to not allow the powers that be to sow seeds of disunity for personal agendas. - Gaby |

Merit vs Colour 22/10/2007 12:48
As I have said all along, if 'they', the politicians are going to force racism by selecting colour instead of merit I will just take up supporting another country and like WoC said, I will support the All Blacks because they came to our support during the final. You see, problem solved and the best is that I still get to watch and support a great side! A pity it won't be the future Bok(Protea?) side... - Glenn |

colours/STOP WINGING 22/10/2007 12:50
FIRST OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS SPRINGBOKS FOR WINNING THE MATCH. GREAT.
AND POLITICIANS; STOP WINGING ABOUT SKIN COLOURS IN SPORTS. SPORT IS ABOUT THE BEST PLAYER, THE BEST TEAM AND THE BEST COACH AND DEFENDING THE COLOURS OF THE NATIONAL FLAG. IF THERE WAS ANYONE WHO COULD HAVE CHANGED SKINCOLOUR IN THE TEAM IT WAS YOU AS POLITICIANS!! YOU COULD HAVE HAD A TEAM OF TALENTSCOUTS SERCHING FOR TOP TALENT. IN THIS GLOBAL WORD SKIN- RACE - NATIONALITY DO'SNT COUNT ANYMORE IN SPORT.TALENT DOES!!!! - dutchcheetahgirl |

Chills 22/10/2007 12:52
Very well said, I get chills just reading your article. I was lucky enough to be in Paris and just seeing how all South Africans, black and white were celebrating, standing united against the English and their swing low sweet chariot. Why is having a world cup winning team not enough, why do we have to bring politics into it? Is being the best in the world not more important that forcing the selectors to not choose players on merit? Please don't take our Springbok away, we're all so proud! - Mazza |

Re: Grats Boks, go NZ 22/10/2007 12:58
Oh my God!! Its because of stupid idiots like 'WoC' that we can't get anywhere in this country. Who gives a shit if the teams too white or not - WE WON!!! All that counts. Get a life! Liezel - Liezel |

What will happen 22/10/2007 13:25
when Jake white played a second rated team against OZ and NZ in the away tri-Nations, the NZ and OZ wanted to file lawsuits and not to play a weak side, do the new PROTEA_AMABOKKE think that tri-nations will continue ? no they will not, also with the super 14, it will go to waiste, and Argentina will replace us as the Tri-nation team. Who Cares, i am switching to Kiwi power as well, atleast supporting them you know the best player plays, i am for that.... - wit gert |

RWC Victory 22/10/2007 13:28
Well said Ndumiso! Now if you could just spread these feelings around. Most young children are, at the moment, colour-blind. But that could change so quickly if the adults around them continue to bring race into everything. Take a good look at how people behaved on Saturday. Cherish it. And build on it! - Dee |

We can be united 22/10/2007 13:28
Imagine if everybody who came out to support the Boks on Saturday came together again, just once, and marched on Parlament.. demanding answers from our 'government' on all the issues we see everyday! United we stand. Devided we WILL fall.. - Hein |

You are 100% CORRECT 22/10/2007 13:30
I agree with what you have said there. We have such great potential. Moments like these unite us but should carry us into the future. I dream of the day that colours fade and we realise that we are one nation. - Aiden Sookdin |

SA United 22/10/2007 13:36
It was fantastic to drive around on Saturday before the game and see a mixed SA smiling, hooting and giving each other the thumbs up. This truly brought tears to my eyes and proved that we can be a united nation... We need to continue building on it! - SB |

WORLD CLASS 22/10/2007 13:41
The boks had shown the president what is the meaning of world class and what needs to be done to achieve this. The president must start feeding the poor so we can get more than just wings to compete for a place in the bok team. - Henning |

Liezel 22/10/2007 13:42
Liezel, have a warm cup of STFU and let people have their own opinions.
The boks havent even returned back and headlines on news24 refer to the race issue with rugby. Why must i support a team that is going to be based purely on race?
So please Liezel, before you tell me to get a life, get your facts straight and go jump in a fire. - WoC |
