Owning or planning to buy a new car can never be a good thing in this country.

Forget the fact that comrade Tito Mboweni has mastered the ability to say "inflation today and inflation tomorrow" without even batting an eyelid, every single week.

Forget the fact that petrol prices jumped by 43c a litre and economist are already telling people to tighten their belts for the next bout of petrol increments that will knock a few out of their cars and into the public transport system next month.

No, these are just minor setbacks and I'm sure oil prices will settle and maybe petrol will drop by 2c next week or so.

Why can't owning a car be a good thing?

    What an honour

Well, imagine waking up late and realising you didn't switch on the geyser last night. Thank Eskom for that advice! So you bath in cold water. You dash of to your car, put key in ignition and silence prevails. Starter dead! At which point you realise you're going to have to catch a taxi as you can't fix the problem then and there.

Yes, forget the convenience of taking yourself wherever your heart pleases. As I stand on main road a taxi comes charging my way - pushing all incoming traffic to the yellow lane. Traffic comes to a standstill and I somehow feel honoured by this effort to pick me up and politeness of fellow motorists (they didn't have much choice though).

The taxi valet, or guardtjie, points me into the direction of the back seat: "Four, four! Masihlalisaneni bahlali!" Before I even sit, the plane, I mean taxi, charges off its prohibited runway (yellow and emergency lane) as I'm thrown into my seat.

Now the only thing missing here was the flight attendant to tell us what to do in case we crashed. At least the back window had "Emergency Exit" on it. The temptation to use that exit was thoroughly overwhelming as we taxed down the runway like a one-engine Nationwide plane, with the possibility of being grounded by traffic cops.

    A wing and a prayer

If religion wasn't such a far-fetched concept to me - I could have easily chanted the Lord's Prayer until I got to my destination - but the prayer moment wouldn't have worked well as fellow motorists, who looked like they were going nowhere slowly as we passed by - displayed all sorts of hand gestures.

Hand gestures which the taxi driver felt obliged to return in the most obscene loud manner. Besides the occasional unplanned pick-up-stops I got to my destination quite quickly.

I should slap myself silly for not showing appreciation towards our valuable, much-needed taxi drivers who took me everywhere in my childhood and student days.

Taxi drivers truly bring new meaning to life and continue to prove, beyond unreasonable doubt that: Where there is a wheel, there is a way.

Travelling by taxi again was quite a blast from the past, but I sure hope my car will be fixed by the time I'm done writing this.

Hmm, makes one wonder what our lighter-hued brothers and sisters do when their cars pack up? Catch a taxi too?

      Public Transport
    06/12/2007 10:53
i rather not buy or plan car rather than high price petrol and Global Warming but i have to buy cos how i can travel to place where i want to go outside where there is no public transport is. I wish Government should do with Public transport like in London Bus, Tube, train, etc... - Didier

      Thanks to the taxi
    06/12/2007 10:56
Be in a desperate situation to get to town for an important interview or something, you will then realise how helpful the reckless and fast driving of taxi drivers is after all. No, white people dont have a problem when their cars can't move, they simply get a ride from the husband or the wife, the daughter or even the son's car. There's usually more than one car in the garage, remember? No need for taxis. - Sello

      Taxi
    06/12/2007 11:04
Hell yes we catch a taxi... one with a valid drivers licence generally we have to phone for them and pay a little more buut we get there alive and there is no price I am not willing to pay fo rmy life... Any muttering that taxies are good in any way you have failed to do your researcg that shows you have a higher chance of being killed and injured in a taxi than in a car, lets not foregt the fact that they shoot anyone they feel is infinging on thier rout, this includes public transport... - Typan

      Taxi, taxi, taxi
    06/12/2007 11:08
A well written story Unathi, yes sometimes the lighter-hued brothers do make use of taxi's ( it must be a seperate clause in the insurance policy). Our taxi's are however not a patch to those in Africa, particulary in DRC. In fact, our taxi's do not even irritate me on the roads anymore - there is still room for improvement. - JD

      Valuable? Much needed?
    06/12/2007 11:10
I realise your article was written somewhat tongue-in-chhek, but seriously. Yes, let's be thankful for these maniacs on the road. Let's be thankful that the majority drive unroadworthy pieces of shit. Let's be thankful that they have absolutely NO regard for other road users, or their passangers. Let's be thankful for the thousands of accidents and deaths they cause every year. Let's be thankful thay block emergeny lanes where even ambulances etc cannot get through to help people in need. Sure. - Rikki

      Taxi drivers
    06/12/2007 11:11
i have no resect for a single taxi driver in this country, i dont care what service they deliver. They have NEVER had any respect for anyone else on the road except themselves. It will be the happiest day of my life if i never have to encounter one on the roads but unfortunatelly that will never happen as they are a cancer that will NEVER go away. - Honestly

      What do we do?
    06/12/2007 11:11
In my student days, when my old piece of rubbish car packed up, I walked everywhere. Nothing like a 10km. walk to keep you fit. - Jean

      To SELLO
    06/12/2007 11:15
White people... Why did you have to bring that up? Like SA only consist out of black & white people. Also, every race has its poor and rich people. I have a car. Almost falling apart but i am proud of it. Also, i took the bus for years and made use of lift clubs. I know that every body is entitled to their own opinion but its not nice to use the race card. Not all white people are born with a silver spoon in our mouths. - Z

      JD
    06/12/2007 11:15
Well that is a good idea JD, lets compare ourselves to the DRC... typical Africa, when something is rotten, you try and find something worse in Africa to make as if it is not that bad. I guess we should not complain about the murder rate, it is not nearly as bad as the genocide that happened in Rwanda... what a joke. - Honestly

      Sorry Unathi...
    06/12/2007 11:17
I am one of your lighter hued brothers!! And all I can say is, I would much rather walk to my destination than catch a delapidated death trap you call a taxi!! They are an absolute menace on the road, and you pretty much confirmed that in your article when you mentioned wanting to pray while in the taxi. Viva my legs!! Viva!! - Villian

      S'khokho
    06/12/2007 11:17
Son of the soil, thanks for thinking differently. As they would say emaKasana, "Uyi-S'khokho" !!! - Son of man

      Hahaha
    06/12/2007 11:24
Yeah quite funny , thanks for the laugh , I have been in a taxi or 3 ,an experience I must add. I would be pleased to use public transport if it was provided , My last train ride was about 10 years back when I was thrown off for about 17 rand in my pocket.Luckily now I have a few cars as you put it , And no it wasnt given to me by Pik,Fw or any of those skanks , No I worked and paid for them myself .. It was not to easy but I managed !!! - Bongani

      They have their place
    06/12/2007 11:25
With our distinct lack of public transport the taxi's are undeniably invaluable to our economy. One day though they will maybe redeem themselves by keeping to road rules, being considerate and having roadworthy vehicles. Pity it has been suggested by some that it is fair and acceptable for taxi's to drive illegaly because some people have two cars per family, to you - GROW UP. - MJ

Sello a lot of BLACKS also have two cars or more
    06/12/2007 11:34
Black taxi owners have fleets of taxis. Stop playing the race game it is becoming boring now. Stick to the TAXI as a means of transport and stay away from the RACE card, really its got nothing to do with race here. I would rather WALK than get into an unroadworthy taxi with a vice grip for a steering wheel and a driver without a drivers licence behind the wheel! - Stoppit

      To Sello...
    06/12/2007 11:38
Do you think those cars in white peoples garages just appeared there? Why must we be persecuted for having the foresight to buy our own cars? I worked my ass off to save cash to buy my own car, so I could be independant!! Dust that chip from your shoulder!! Sad thing is, you'll probably end up dying in one of your "fantastic" taxi's like too many others. - Villian

      I would use public transport
    06/12/2007 11:40
if there was a reliable and safe system. Unforutnately you get thrown off trains, mugged at taxi stops, get killed in taxi accidents etc. I don't feel guilty for being white or for having a car. I first used my feet, then a bicycle, then a piece of crap car, then I bought a 2nd hand car, then took over my dad's car. yes .. Only after working for 20 years could I afford a new one. We did'nt just GET what we have we DESERVE it and we WORKED for it. - White

ur choice...i would rather use a bus
    06/12/2007 11:44
been on the road for quite sometime and can tell u now taxis are death traps.have you ever seen a privately owned car with falling wheels and brakes kept together by a pice of wire?i see taxis eveday havong lost their wheels on freeways.they go life F1 cars and do not even have abs brakes.when i'm not in the mood for my Vulindlela i choose a bus instead....! - givenchy

      Taxi's & Petrol Increase!
    06/12/2007 11:46
Why do we not see them complain or strike over petrol increases anymore....??? They return their slips for full refunds from the Government!!!! Now put that in your tanks and smoke it (Through your exhausts.) - Martin

      Phone a friend
    06/12/2007 11:46
Unathi, while you are asking. Your LIGHTER-HUED brothers phone a friend, or a family member or they use the PUBLIC BUS TRANSPORT system. They walk to the nearest busstop and then ride to work. You asked the question, I answered it. I for one will NOT use a taxi, not because of my colour but because of my SAFETY! End of story! - Way

      It is a joke!
    06/12/2007 11:50
Hey Honestly, it is a joke, our taxis are a joke, crime is a joke, law enforcement is a joke, (read the article Kgomotso wrote, zero tolerance by our Metro Police ???????) the present ANC struggle is a joke, the expressions on taxi passengers faces while motoring down the yellow line at breakneck speed is a joke, the list is endless. We are on our way to become just like the African states. - JD

      Taxi's !
    06/12/2007 11:52
Hey Unathi, your article made me smile ! thanks for the lighter side of life on this otherwise dull and grey thursday. - Only Me

      Keep praying
    06/12/2007 11:54
I choose not to put life in the hands of a Taxi driver no matter how importatnt that meeting might be. So you go ahead and keep on praying that you arrive at your destination in one peace or keep on the praying the interest rates dont go up any more! Keep on praying or get yourself a better job and buy a reliable car! - warren

      TAXI FROM LENASIA
    06/12/2007 11:54
Unathi,u have come with one of the most important thing today.I'm from lenasia i have BMW 325I KHUSHESHE as i'm saying now i'm not using it because of that inflation now i'm using taxi and is only R4 a day.what i like to say is,we as motorist,it is a bad weather for us hopefuly may things will get better in future let's hope. - modise

      taxi
    06/12/2007 11:58
I will never ever travel in a taxi! They are total death traps. I feel for the people who have no other means of transport. In the Cape when I lived there we were fortunate to travel by train and/or bus. Other alternative? Walk! And Sello please stop the white/black thing stick to the main topic. - carol

      stop this now...
    06/12/2007 12:07
I seriously dont see why all of you are crucifying the poor sello and taking out your race cards, read WAY's comments then you realise that they correlate and agree with one another. He actually never blamed whites for having two cars or did he?so whats up with this hysteria..be objective and matured for once people...Sello was simply answering unathi's question "what does the lighter-hued brothers do when their cars break down, this race thing is seriously being blown our of proportion sometimes.. - kolobe

      Sello
    06/12/2007 12:12
Ai Sello. You ARE right. We were all simply just GIVEN cars. Its not like we had to work hard and pay for them, huh? - Juan

      A whitie used a taxi
    06/12/2007 12:13
I'm white & years ago when I lived in SA, I could not afford a car & my parents' vehicles were old rustbuckets that my dad had to work on regularly to keep them going. So at one stage, when I had a temporary second job - and needed to get there quickly, I hopped into a taxi. It was great! The driver was responsible, the fare cheap & my fellow passengers did not bat an eyelid at my presence. I'd do it again :-) - Saffa

Ppl like SELLO, should be banned from this forum. It is high time that NEWS24 cuts out these weeds that intentionally incite hate speech, and racial tension. I log onto this forum cos I find the interaction interesting, but, I DO NOT log onto the forum to read comments posted by idiot's like SELLO. This behaviour is unacceptable, and by ignoring these type of comments, you are condoning it. If NEWS24 condones this behaviour, I rather have intellectual interaction elsewhere. - GP

      White Taxi
    06/12/2007 12:18
Being of the lighter minority, this may come as a shock to some readers, but I myself have made use of taxi's for years. Yes they have a bad rap and yes some leave allot to be desired when it comes to safety, but the vibe you get inside a taxi is good and all you ever really need is a few rand's and a hand signal and there is never one far away. - Jon

Ha ha ha ...breath ....ha ha ha ...
    06/12/2007 12:19
Unathi i know exactly what u saying. last month my car had a gear box problem & i had no other alternative but to use taxi'z from buccleuch to centurion, it was a blast from the past. the taxi i was in felt like the bottom was going to fall away like a Nationwide engine. What suprised me was how quickly i got to my destination thru traffic, usuaaly i'm so irritated by these taxi's. that day i was running so late but i got to work on time saving me from my written warning for my time keeping. - skarr..

      Do not!!
    06/12/2007 12:29
React to racial spurring, ignore the comment, add your 2 cents and move on. The people who deliberately spur racial conflict will soon realise they are being ignored and either contribute positively or disappear altogether, the latte being the preferred one. - A DJ

Surprisingly not all white people have 2 or more cars!!!! I am a 32 year old white male. I have been working for the last 13 years. I am married. Both me & my Wife rely on one car - our trusty Citi Golf Chico 1.3.When it breaks I take the Bus & then walk 5km to my work. So please don't judge, you racist!!! - Werner

From one extreme to the other
    06/12/2007 12:35
Two days ago thousands of NUM members went on strike because of 200 fatalities in the mining sector this year.Unsafe they say, not worth their lives. From there they got into buses and taxi's and went wherever. What a joke. Taxi's are not the lesser evil, they are the evil. A quick escape for the lack of public transport. They are a law upon themselves and obviously accountable to nobody. And yes they do make good money, else they wouldn't be there, just like mines.200 vs thousands. Think about it - dogbone

      What did sello say
    06/12/2007 12:41
Sello just said that white people generally catch a lift with someone else, did he say that white people did not work for those cars. There is nothing wrong with having more than one car no matter what race u are. Like Unathi asked what do white people do in the same situation, we are black so we would like to know your funny stories if you have any, or do you just use wifey or hubby's car.. c'mon people lighten up its almost weekend... - skarr..

      Interesting Experiment
    06/12/2007 12:44
After returning from some time in Canada, I really missed public transport. Then it hit me. SA has city busses too. Much to the amusement of my friends and co-workers, I decided not to get a car for now, and give our city busses a chance. Hmm... pleasantly surprised. More accessible than I thought. Yes, sometimes I have to wait. Standard not the same as the Canadian's, but over all, not too bad. I think I'm going to put off buying a car for some time. - Lithium

      To Sello and GP
    06/12/2007 12:51
News 24, I fully agree with GP. It does not matter what the article is about, Sello will have something racist to say. Sello, if you cant make constructive comments, rather stay away. It is people like you that need to get a life. Go Away please, and stay away. - Drifter

    06/12/2007 12:56
Funny article sello, keep it up. Coming back from a trip overseas I have more appreciation for the role taxis will have to play in the soccer world cup. That's why its so important that the taxi recapitalisation program goes ahead and get our taxi industry into shape. For many tourists, our mini bus taxis will an essential means of transport. Cheers! - jc

Kolobe is correct. I was only answering Nathi's question that whites just get a ride from the family member, I didn't say that's wrong. Of course anyone who has cars worked hard to get them. I never said those cars just appeared in the garage. You people guys are over sensitive, maybe it's because everyone calls whites racists even if it's irrelevant, so you are forever defensive bcos you feel like you are being attacked for being whites. I'm not attacking you at all. Relax guys, let's not fight. - Sello

      Relax guys
    06/12/2007 12:59
Wow, white guys, chillax a little bit. You're so quick to become defensive and negative. If you don't feel guilty about owning a car why do you have to say so? I didn't see anything in the article that implies that you should... - another whitey
