Could Jacob Zuma's election as President of the ANC be one of the greatest paradoxes in modern African history?

On the one hand there are those who will be unable to see past his infamous shower and also the allegations of corruption that have been levelled against him. But on the other hand, I can't help but wonder if his election is not perhaps one of the greatest victories for democracy in Africa's history?

There will be those who watched the changing of the guard this week and thought the whole thing was an unruly and ill-disciplined shambles. But maybe if we choose to look beyond the mist of the shower and away from the "supposed" money tucked under the mattress, that in fact this event was in reality, a major victory for democracy in this country?

Why on the one hand do we label the heckling at the ANC conference as unruly and ill-disciplined but on the other regard the House of Commons in the UK as organised chaos and democracy in action?

My view is that a healthy opposition is a key ingredient for any democracy and what we witnessed on the weekend was healthy. The so-called strangle-hold of the Xhosa has been broken through an act that for me epitomises democracy in action. Is this not the kind of democratic freedom that many Zimbabweans dream of?

Of course time will tell, but for now Zuma seems to be saying all the right things. I believe he will be tougher on dealing with the problems of HIV and Aids. Maybe his own experience has helped to enlighten him?

I admire a man who is bold enough to admit if he was wrong, but who is also prepared to do something about it. Indications are that he holds strong views about the situation in Zimbabwe and about our problems that we face in this country with crime, and is prepared to act on his convictions. These are all good things.

He also recently made a trip to the USA and met investors who were extremely impressed by his attitudes.

Obviously the law will take its course and the reality is that Zuma may never become president, but for now, I am prepared to give the man a chance.

      Zuma
    19/12/2007 11:52
What has our country come to. Here we go again in the Days of our Lives in RSA, with Zuma in the Lead. I feel that it is my democratic right not the vote at all in the next elections! - Tania Cyster

      A new party
    19/12/2007 11:53
True democracy will only start once Mbeki and his followers divide with their own party and Zuma became President after found not-guilty. Until then, I don't think anything is going to change. - Citizen

      With you on this
    19/12/2007 11:56
I have been somewhat sceptical of the smoke and mirrors in the recent past with regard to JZ and his relationship with the presidency. I too believe that this is a great chance for us, and we might see someone that actually takes governance and the people seriously. Good luck JZ, I don't think my optimism is unfounded. - Gavin

How can I overlook the undemocratic way of achieving democracy?
    19/12/2007 11:58
If democracy means shouting down your opponents and preventing them from speaking. If democracy is humiliating gestures and wild celebration for an internal process, then I am missing something. Democracy in the changing of the guard was good, but as an ANC voter I am less with a sour taste. Anc members are taking my vote for granted in assuming that any idiot will automatically get my vote. Democracy might be the undoing of the ANC as voters will use their democratic right to tel off the ANC - Len

Why JZ is so damn awesome!
    19/12/2007 11:58
The guy is a puppet, a good kind of puppet in that he wields such might. Jacob will be a good figurehead, a good face in the papers, but as a leader will he really rely on his own convictions, or be too easily influenced by his "President's Men"... it's going to be interesting fo sho. - Ryan Matthews

      Good Article
    19/12/2007 11:59
Good article Peter. Give him a chance to prove that he can do the Job. Even though I feel the "Shower" comments he made will take people a long time to forget. - speed

      LISTEN TO YOURSELF!
    19/12/2007 12:03
Dude! Someone with only a STANDARD THREE education basically got elected as your next president!... Slowly read this above sentence again.. and let it sink in. If ANYWONE ever wonders why there's so much affro-pessimism abroad...they should wonder no more. How can ANYONE that even made it to High School have any respect for his authority? I certainly don't! - Juan

      Zuma will set us free
    19/12/2007 12:05
News24 favors comments from white folks that continuously discredit our government. Another striking example of racism. My comments are rarely aired in here simply because it's honest and so very compelling. Get with the program folks, the people shall govern. Now who owes all those lovely beachfront properties in Plettenbery bay, in Clifton, in Camps Bay, in Knysna. :) We want some as well. I mean the people the folks that own them acquired it during apartheid. Group Areas Act denied us. - A DJ

      Change is good
    19/12/2007 12:05
It is time that Mbeki went... he has gotten too drunk on the power that he wields. However the problem with Zuma is that many of his supporters believe that he is an instant cure to their financial woes..... - hexen

      rubbish
    19/12/2007 12:06
I was going to respond to some of the issues you raise but then i realised that the rest of your article is non-sense. - nic

      jacob zuma
    19/12/2007 12:08
could not agree with you more peter people are so afraid of change you;d swear the world was ending how many of us knew thabo mbeki before the death of the person who was earmarked to take over after mandela very few i will tell but because he was endorsed by mandela after the death of chris hani he was accepted without any one objecting and crying foul i am concerned about the people who are still calling him a rapist even after the court found out that the complainent lied - tshepo morajane

      Give Zuma a chance
    19/12/2007 12:09
You got it right Peter. - dlamini

      He had his chance...
    19/12/2007 12:09
as deputy president of the Republic, and spoilt it by possibly putting his hands in the till (he's not the only one though,he just got caught). For that he will be tainted for the rest of his life, even if he is found to be not guilty. - The Truth

      Well said Peter
    19/12/2007 12:11
Well said i could not agree more with u more peter, you must be one of the few white South African's who are willing to give JZ a chance. Zuma is not the first politician who has had controversy follow him i mean look at (USA) G.Bush he leads the most powerful country in the world with his own issues. Bill Clinton had a scandel while in office, not to say this is good but come on this is reality in this age we are living in. Give the man a chance those who are not happy are welcome to leave. - MT

      JZ
    19/12/2007 12:19
I am a white male and I am in two minds however my gut is leaning towards supporting JZ. He has in the past indicated that he aims to work with all and not dictate. Time will in deed tell but I am to happy that a new day has dawned.... - Tinus

      I Agree
    19/12/2007 12:20
People can hold on to Zuma shower and AIDS issues, we moved on last night. All JZ need to do now is repair his image by apologizing to the country and act on those weaknesses. Otherwise they should just make sure they vote for DA come 2009. I believe he can be everybody's Moses. - Merika

      Why should we...
    19/12/2007 12:20
look beyond "the mist of the shower and away from the supposed money tucked under the mattress"? Be an ostrich with his head in the sand if you want to be, but don't expect the rest of us to follow suit.If he were not guity then why go to the Constitutional Court to have the NPA's seizure of incriminating documents, as well as the infamous diary in Mauritius declared as illegal? He should have nothing to hide if he is innocent, shouldn't he? This country and it people deserve far better I think. - The Truth

Democracy is not all it's cracked up to be!
    19/12/2007 12:23
I agree - this is absolutely a display of what true democracy is about. BUT it doesn't necessarily give us what is right for us as a collective. True, no political system does, but this just goes to show that neither does democracy! Should he become president, I still don't know what Zuma is planning to offer those of us who are national of SA, but not members of the ANC. The ANC is no longer what it used to be. It has served it's purpose! It's time to disband and build credible opposition. - Curious

      Hero
    19/12/2007 12:28
Jacob did work for the country, you guys were wild asleep. you do not want Jacob , Leave the Country to where you are most comfortable. - fiso

      ZUMA...OUR NEXT PRESIDENT
    19/12/2007 12:28
Numbers don't lie, it was clear from the nominations that he was going to be the President. Let's give him a chance and not use a lame excuse like his education background. My manager does not have a degree and I have two,but still he's my manager. There are many people, especially whites in top positions but their subordinates are more qualified. We need someone to focus on S.A issues(crime, hiv aids unemployment). Mbeki served his time and we appreciate his contributions. All the best Zuma - PAT

      Who cares how he showers
    19/12/2007 12:28
Democracy is about the majority of the country choosing their leaders and those leaders making policy based on the views of those that elected them. In this regard Thabk Mbeki failed dismally with poverty rising in his time in power (SA is pretty much the only country in Africa where the percentage of people living on $1/ day grew) and unemployment unchanged. Let's give Zuma a chance, let's have a real leader who has the respect and loyalty of his people lead. - Uncle Bob

      Are you serious?
    19/12/2007 12:30
I'm sorry that I don't share your optimism Peter. If I look at the character of the man, I have to doubt. He was accused of rape, and to be honest I don't care if he was found not guilty. Why was he having sex with someone other than his two wives... yes TWO wives. Especially when she had HIV. He has also been accused of fraud, which is largely unresolved. He has 18 children and a std 3 education. I'm not hopeful. - Giles

      The leader they deserve
    19/12/2007 12:31
The leader they deserve. In democracy the people get the leader they deserve. We now have a true tribal leader who will turn out to be worst than Mad Bob in the north, he only has one wife at a time. I see a new jet, Mbeki?s just won?t do and each and every year a new first lady, maybe he will have enough time left to rival the Swazi King. - Rosemary

      Zuma has had his chance!
    19/12/2007 12:31
How long till Zuma forces Mbeki out, I doubt Mebki will see the 2009 elections as president. Viva! Double-A NC (Another African Country Collapses) - Neill

      Juan...
    19/12/2007 12:32
Education is not everything!!. I have a PhD but I don't feel different from the average joe. My point is, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to rule a country. Leadership is all that matters!! Don't forget that JZ was vice President for a long time, and a leader for most of his adult life. - Educ

      Give Zuma a chance
    19/12/2007 12:35
Give him a chance? We're not talking about reversing the u/13 batting order, or letting the fat kid play striker here... It is no-one's right to lead a country, it's an honour and privilege that I don't feel he's earned. - chap

      Honesty, Wisdom and Justice
    19/12/2007 12:41
I give you 2 quotes: "Abraham Lincoln" Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power". "Albert Einstein" Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with the important matters. Jacob Zuma has already failed miserably on both these counts. Power has already corrupted him. How on God's Earth can we hope amd believe that he will change. Now he has to cover his backside; wonder when his friend Shabbir will be released. - Alicia

Give Zuma a chance. Well said.
    19/12/2007 12:42
If it had ti take Zuma to kick Mbeki out, then its good for Democracy otherwise the man would have cling to power like Mugabe is doing. If you think we should have voted Mbeki, then Mugabe is correct in what is doing in Zim. Juan, Richard Bronson is a billionair today because he did not look down on himself, that's why Zuma is a good Leader. How many of us are motivated by that fact. Get a life Dude. - Phila

      I wonder...
    19/12/2007 12:43
what Albert Luthuli and all the other previous presidents (including Madiba) of the ANC make of this farce last night? I am willing to bet that not one of them were ever charged with rape or fraud (or ever gave anyone a reason to charge them of such crimes in the first place). What a dark day for any country when people of all races aren't asked to stand up and to elect their leader (without having to be a card carrying member of the ruling regime/elite)."Democracy" my lily white behind! - The Truth

      leader?
    19/12/2007 12:44
And the example the "new president" will set to our children is mortifying? i will have to tell my son, it's ok too have a criminal charge against you, it's ok if you "rape" someone, and just shower if you don't wear a condom, our "president" said so- just be sorry afterwards then all is well and you can still be leader of millions. The truth of our country is quite sad. - lin

      The measure of a nation
    19/12/2007 12:46
Leaders are the measure of the nation. It's sad that we seem to be scraping the barrel for one. Whites who complain should remove the log from their own eye - do whites have a Mandela in stock? No. SA tops world AIDS figures; we elect a leader whose promiscuous life was testified to himself. SA bottoms literacy surveys; we elect a leader whose own education was a low priority. SA loses billions to corruption and crime; we elect a leader while he is under suspicion. So we got what we deserve! - Pieter Joubert

      Exodus
    19/12/2007 12:48
When the National Party went, whites fled in fear, when Mandela went, whites fled in fear, when Mbeki goes, will whites flee in fear? I'm still here, waiting for the apocolypse, not missing those that fled. I agree Peter. I'm giving him a chance. Mbeki is a thinker, Zuma is a listener. Let's hope he listens to the right people. - Nicola

      Curious,you are so right
    19/12/2007 12:56
The ANC,IFP and DA are relics like the NP was before them and they have all passed their sell-by dates.Time for a new political landscape to emerge and I think it will start to after yesterday. - The Truth

      Zuma For President
    19/12/2007 12:59
Give the man a break and see what he can do, Thaabo was given a chance and I think everybody deserves that much. VIVA ZUMA, VIVA!! - Zuma

      Fiso...
    19/12/2007 12:59
I struggle to believe your comments are to be taken seriously. Do you really want anyone that does not support JZ to leave the country? Wake up, you plank! How can you make such uneducated, undemocratic and frankly stupid (racist) comments. Sounds like a cry for "ethnic cleansing" of sorts. Appreciate other people's choices for what they are. You disgust me. This country would crumble into further chaos without those who choose to question. - bobo

      Democratic???
    19/12/2007 13:00
I'm sorry man, do I understand you correctly?? Am I as a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen given a say in electing our president??? In what possible way, apart from within the ANC was Zuma democratically elected?? I would never in a million years vote for this man. - manicm

      Thanks...
    19/12/2007 13:03
Trust me,South Africa needs positive people like you Peter. Thats the best words I have ever heard from a noble South African since the first presitantial speech from Dr Nelson Mandela. - myself

      man with out education
    19/12/2007 13:04
How can ANC let a man with out sound education be the president of ANC . Is a good example to the youth and the future of SA. Youth ask questions is necessary to go to school - jay jay

      Democracy at it best
    19/12/2007 13:04
Zuma was voted by the people who need change. You do not need to have a degree to become a good leader. Why do people always look on the negative side? Onesided mentality I guess? Mbeki has created a huge gap between the rich and the poor. Only a few benefited from Mbeki's leadership. Majority are still struggling to survive. Zuma had acknowledged that there is a high crime rate in SA and something needs to be done about it. A change was overdue. - Mafedile

      Shower no longer adds value.
    19/12/2007 13:05
The shower story no longer add value. His conviction will certainly put him away. That's my last hope at least. Let's not forget that the other members of the top six are very strong. I hope he gets charged and Galema leads us from the woods. So, there's still hope guys, don't jump ship yet. - Libembe

      A saying..
    19/12/2007 13:08
A sage idiom that boasts the image of a "leopard" and its "spots" comes to mind at this point.../ - John

      Let's see
    19/12/2007 13:09
JZ is only another puppet in the hands of the real leaders(Cosato, the Youth league and the SACP) of our country, who demonstrated once again during the circus in Polokwane to me and to the rest of world that we as black South Africans, does not know the meaning of democracy. Jo - Jo

      zuma
    19/12/2007 13:09
Well said pieter joubert! I dont care what anybody says about JZ- the man has got no integrity and is simply not fit to lead this great country. That he has been elected boggles the mind! Zuma- no, not everybody deserves a chance- life does not work that way. Fiso- I think I will take up your kind offer and leave for greener shores, leaving you with JZ at the helm to guide you towards creating another Zimbabwe and a 15000% inflation rate. Wake up man - piet

      Good work Mr Neill
    19/12/2007 13:10
He(JZ) may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but he outshined the brightest.I am a confessed TM fan ( I understand technically what it takes to make strides like he did on some areas of his mandate) but in all these I learnt something "never underestimate the power time holds". Let's give a man a chance...or should I say ...support?? - Justin

      Give JZ a chance
    19/12/2007 13:12
What has happened, has happened and no-one can change it now. Pres Mbeki is educated, but he has alienated his people with too much academic hogwash. I thing Mr Zuma may be the right person to consolidate the ANC and perhaps loose some members to the left and to the right. I have an higher education, but that does not equip me to run a country. I think mr Zuma has the right personality to drive this country. He must just make sure that he uses the correct advisors, and make informed decisions. - Hein

Bush is educated, but can you really tell
    19/12/2007 13:15
Juan, I am not sure I understand your point. George Bush is one of the dumbest president to come out of America (that says a lot) despite having a formal, if useless education at Yale. No one is left with any doubt how he got his degree. At leas Zuma worked for what little he achieved. forget about education, concerntrate on his shower and corruption - Len

      RE: Listening (Nicola)
    19/12/2007 13:16
"Mbeki is a thinker, Zuma is a listener." However, what this country actually needs is Do'er... We had a listener - Mandela, he was the greatest listener and was willing to listen to all. Maybe Zuma is a listener, but at the end of the day he only listens to those whom he wishes to hear from! So in essence we need an implementer, i.e. a do'er - time for delivery (HOMES, WATER, ELEC, EDUCATION!!!) - John

A DJ (You are right about favouritism)
    19/12/2007 13:17
i agree with you,A DJ, news 24 favors comments from from certain race groups and excludes others. my comments have also been excluded on a number of occassions-lets hope this one makes it - pj

      Zuma
    19/12/2007 13:19
We have no alternative except to give Zuma a chance. Lets hear his policies. Am not wild about some of the people supporting him: Maharaj (left under a cloud over tollgate companies) The Shaiks (will Zuma give his erstwhile advisor a presidential pardon and make Mo who has lot of say about finance, minister of finance)Mbete (Travelgate MP) As for the call for my machine gun bit, will we see the same pressure in the street outside the courtroom from the mob we saw in the ANC conference - Powerless citizen

Peter you hippy you, leave that bong alone!
    19/12/2007 13:19
Wow, talk about not learning from our mistakes. Clearly you've been brainwashed. To believe a leopard can change his spots. Ludicrous, give the man a chance? LOL, What on earth are you smoking? If he is going to be good, it's merely going to last a few weeks, if not days. Then his thin little facade will fade and by then it will be too late to divert disaster into anything remotely positive. - MP3

lin - Dont forget white mans evils
    19/12/2007 13:19
Lin, yes you can tell your kids that. Just like how you told them, that you can suppress a race of people, systematically undermine them, exploit them for centuries and still live in their country with all the luxuries and comforts you acquired through your evil relentless pursuits. You and your ancestors did it. Why should it be different for anyone else? - A DJ

      Give him a chance
    19/12/2007 13:19
You dont have to carry your certificates to rule, even your precious Thabo has the right man to help him, Zuma wont be running th country alone, and everyone who's not happy abt that go hang yourselves and take your Thabo with you,Zuma is here to stay, cry or laugh ,not his fan either but sick with education comments - friendly

      zuma
    19/12/2007 13:22
i'm happy that JZ will be leading the ANC. i personally feel that he deserve a chance to lead our country and he knows what we want as south africans. for once crime will stop and sothing will be done for HIV and Aids.msholozi for President - MOTSAMAI

Mbeki's popularity was well established, but on the streets
    19/12/2007 13:23
Tshepho. Many of us who were educated enough to understand politics actually knew Thabo Mbeki. He was instrumental in isolating apartheid South Africa and was the defact Foreign Affairs minister for the ANC (hence he feels more confortable in this area). Do not mistake your ignorance for fact. - len

      LIN
    19/12/2007 13:32
LIN ,WHY DONT YOU LEAVE THE COUNTRY ,IF YOU THINK ITS SO SAD.AND HERE AGAIN I AGREE WITH A DJ ''that you can suppress a race of people, systematically undermine them, exploit them for centuries and still live in their country with all the luxuries and comforts you acquired through your evil relentless pursuits'' - pj

      education
    19/12/2007 13:33
Privilledge should not be abused, just because you can respond to this column does not make your comments sensible. If Zuma managed to be an uneducated President it makes him a genius, and this should make you wonder if formal education is relevant in politics. You should be taking real life lessons from this outcome.Negetive and unfounded prophecy only expose the prophet of doom for who he is.Housewives like Rosemary should concentrate on housekeeping instead of exposing their educated ignorrance. - siya

      Yes, lets...
    19/12/2007 13:35
Give JZ a chance, he can use the ANC Presidency to prove his critics wrong or right. In the meantime, you lot who tell pessimists to leave the country or say all blacks are sheeple or whatever, please pretty please get over yourselves. Respect opinions other than your own - it's called 'freedom of speech', get used to it. I read you diatribe on a daily basis (I hope you do too). It is filled with hate and contempt, you then turn around and cry foul when the excrement is flung back in your direction. You and your media have no idea how of the psyche of the people, you and your media handed this man that you loathe the ropes to be the next president. The manner in which the media treats the Nubian leaders and the people has not gone unnoticed. The propaganda has clearly been orchestrated to undermine the African leader?s and the people?s intellectual capacity. You have never contributed any positive criticism(most of you who destroy in this column) based on fact and but all you do is attempt to taint SA?s democracy with fiction like the article Mike scribbled here, it goes to show, democracy can only be if it suits you. Africans are socialists (even TM has acknowledged that) thus what needs to be done is customise our capitalist system to suit all SA, those of you who believe they are a superior species should go and get naked @ a Russian night club ( like your leaders Down Under). Those of you who love SA should vote for the party of your choice and work towards making this country grate. AMEN - PBR

So you think JZ will stop the scurge of violence and AIDS. How very naive. Considering he takes showers for preventative measures against AIDS. Has himself, been on trial for Rape (one of the most prolific crimes here in SA) but fear not ladies and gentlemen. He will save us! From what exactly, I do not know... - MP3
