'Yes, it was a war zone'
11/03/2008 13:20  - (SA)

  • Cops planned Matie drug raids
  • 'I am sick of police brutality'
  • VIDEO: Stellenbosch CCTV Footage
  • Maties tell of cop terror
  • GALLERY: Police raids
  • Cape Town - MyNews24 has received several accounts from people involved in the Stellenbosch club raids. While we have not been able to confirm all the events contained in these letters, we appreciate the time taken to write to MyNews24. Here is one such letter.

    Dear Editor,

Well planned raid? I was there that night; I got thrown into a van for standing around. I wasn't searched, they just threw me into a van. If the raid on Friday night was planned, like the Stellenbosch police commissioner said it was, then it must have been planned by one of their top preschool officers!

The way they came in guns blazing, literally, set the stage for the chaos that ensued. And of course, once again, the police will get off without accepting responsibility for their actions, saying it necessary to use such force against so many, young, and slightly intoxicated students.

I was there and yes it was a war zone, once the police had started firing off their weapons and nailing everyone with the mace. The video evidence captured at both Mystic Boer and Bohemia, clearly show how the police abuse their power.

Both these "clubs" are popular hangouts for young students and it was just another Friday night out, and being students, everyone was partying.

Firstly it is very clear that shots were fired. Saying that the holes could have been put in the roof after by angry bar owners is ridiculous, and it's clear that the police commissioner is making excuses for how poor their "planned" operation went, and how unprofessionally it was executed!

From what I have seen in the past it should be normal procedure to raid premises for drugs with a dog unit. Instead they used a special task force, that came in spraying pepper spray in peoples faces, firing their shotguns and of course the necessary beatings that were so willingly dealt out.

If the police had really done their homework why would they come in and fire weapons and use such force when it's really clear by what they recovered that it was pretty pointless, except if they wanted to put fear and tarnish an already poor reputation.

If that was their mission they should get all get medals and a raise because it seems they always do that just perfectly. Those students did not offer resistance, no weapons were found on anyone, so the gun-toting was really uncalled for. Why such a use of force was necessary I do not know.

If the police were really looking for drugs why did they not go to where the drugs come from, investigate where the drug dealers are living and getting stock from? It seems that going out to raid a few bars for 150g of marijuana and some hashish is a very unsuccessful raid.

Surely if the raid was as well-planned as the police claim it was they should have recovered more drugs and at least made an arrest? Which by the way, there were none.

The thing that makes me so angry is that although there is video evidence, the police have the power to say that it was what was necessary. Nothing will come of the blatant abuse of human rights. I'm all for drug raids and the police doing their work, it just seems that they are always doing it wrong.

And when it goes pear-shaped, like this weekend past, they brush it off and say excessive force was necessary.

    Steve French
    Stellenbosch

    11/03/2008 13:38
the scary thing is that this mentality governs stellenbosch. Its shocking to see male officers beating young females around, i hope that every action possible is taken against these "police" - Ricky James

      Junkies will always complain
    11/03/2008 13:45
Big upm to the police for raiding the junkies hangout. Stop making noise about the raid, it was a raid not a visit by your NIGERIAN SUPPLIERS. Please police do it again in DURBAN, PRETORIA, CAPE TOWN and those who whinge too much, teargas them. Ag NEE MAN!!!! - Tomas

      Get ur facts straight
    11/03/2008 13:47
The SAPS Task Force has more dangerous issues to deal with so please do not slander them. The unit used in this raid was part of the national Intervention unit. There is a big difference. Secondly the operation formed part of a bigger picture of drug busting. Force is necessary during any drug bust as we all know (well it seems not everyone) how resourceful and dangerous Drug syndicates can be. Wrong place at the wrong time for some.. Pity the police are damned if they do.. - fern

      Mieliepit....your brain size?
    11/03/2008 13:48
Raid was done incorrectly, deal with it. A comment like yours is the smae as someone saying to the black woman who's kid got killed by 3 robers in a crossfire - "deal with it" - Mash

      Planned Armed Robbery
    11/03/2008 13:49
Very brave of Steve is that is his real, be carefull of police retalition (happen before in S'bos). This was a planned armed roberry. Students' wallets in Springboks were removed relieved of cash and placed back. Objected and you got a kick or some pepper spray. - Another eyewitness account

      Oh Dear!
    11/03/2008 13:49
Be still my beating heart! So who hasn't been to a nightclub! I've been in a raid where they used excessive force and I was handled but I didn't hold any grudges given all the shit the police have to deal with on a daily basis...A crappy judicial system, useless government for support, lack of resources...the list goes on. Instead of bitching and moaning why don't we start standing behind our policeman, the government isn't doing anything. - Win

      hear hear mieliepit
    11/03/2008 13:49
Out of the hundreds of people affected by the raids not even a handful of charges have been laid by the cops. A few loud whingers with a youtube account won't convince me that this was not necessary. - fern

      Tomas - another idiot
    11/03/2008 13:50
Lets teargas the coffee shop in the Airport, alot of drugs going through there so if we shoot atleast 1 of the people it wont be that bad? WTF are you smoking man, you should hand yourself over to the police and show them your stash of drugs you keep under your babies cot. - Mash

      Wrong place,wrong time
    11/03/2008 13:52
Although thier tactics were wrong, at least they are trying.Maybe one day they will get it right and end up in the right club.Till then you guys are training..lol TOMAS, I am just curious, maybe a little ignorant, but what the hell is BIG UP??Is this a new South African word or is it the one that Americans use...if its the latter, stop using it because you sound DUMB!!! - nWo

    11/03/2008 13:52
It's hard to believe how insensitive Mieliepit and some of the other commentators are. I wonder what their reactions would have been if they had been there. Anybody who has been a student will probably have compassion, anyways I guess it's just symptomatic of how desensitized we have become after all these years of violent crime in SA, and the constant bombardment by the media. It's a sad, sick world we're living in, and busting up some fun seeking students without even making an arrest SUCKS! - Logic_Bomb

Cops has had it wrong for years
    11/03/2008 13:54
When it comes to drugs , Why target the users and leave the distributors to rome free. Why ? Let me tell you why because 80% of cops get bribes and even kickbacks from the nigerian drug lords, Thats why and they need to so "somthing" to make it look like they fighting the drug scene. Nigerians run the drug scene in SA and have SAPS on their payroll - Bongani

      Very Scary
    11/03/2008 13:54
Police brutality has long been a MERE allegation from a victim who most probably desErved it. This video ripped the myth from within the crevices and laid it bare on the surface. Drugs or not, that was unbecoming of our men n women in blue. The aggression and the vigour they demonstrated begs the question "WHAT WOULD THEY DO TO ONE IN A DARK ALLEY SOMEWHERE?" One thing frustrating bout SA is accountability, where is it, who should be? - The Great

      Screw you SAPS!
    11/03/2008 13:55
If I was a criminal I would have been smiling and laughing at this.Unfortunately I am a law-abiding citizen and will never trust any police officer again. And it's not only this incident, but everything we read about in the news that makes me feel this way. Suburbs living in fear, people murdered in their own secure homes, tourists getting mugged on their way from the airports. Is this how we solve the crime in S.A? What a joke! The criminals and druglords must be lauging their asses off. - gatvol.

people really do not understand the situation...
    11/03/2008 13:56
bohemia is not a junkie place. most students that study at stellenbosch have been there more than once. So now 300 odd innocent people get smacked around and peppersprayed by cops so they can get 2 joints?! Go out there and catch the real criminals and stop wasting time on 5 hour raids that upset tons of INNOCENT people and deliver no arrests... - skim

Not a junky, atleast I have manners.
    11/03/2008 13:57
Wow did you guys even watch the video? On the Bohemia CCTV thats on news24 you would see near the end how a police officer throws a young women to the ground? Dont know how you were raised... Im almost sure they would have had the same success if they raided the Mugg & Bean on a Saterday morning, without guns... If they just checked all the car guards they would have actually recovered more drugs and arrested some people. These raids were a complete failure. - sF

      Quit using drugs
    11/03/2008 13:59
Do these guys expect police knock at the and politely ask if they can come in.I've witnenessed many situations like this and its always the drunk loudmouths who start trouble by being uncooperative and hurling abuse at the cops.when they get what is due then they cry foul. just stop visiting drug dens and you'll be fine. - mara

      Police mentality
    11/03/2008 14:01
This seems to be the new approach by the police. Here in PE townships this approach is used in areas where people are just drinking and there are no drugs or any illegal activities going on. If police feel that it is time for taverns/night clubs to close they just come and moer or spray everyone. - ZG

      To all who say....
    11/03/2008 14:01
wrong place wrong time, or good one for raiding the junkies! If they were such junkies, why was so little drugs found! Think please!! If your daughter was at a bar dancing with her friends and got her vagina fealt by a male officer you would just tell her, "wrong place, wrong time"! Please! Force like that is only justified if the police are in danger! They weren't!! Some drunk oke vomiting on their shoes isn't danger!! - dwp

      Police brutality? bah hah!
    11/03/2008 14:02
I cant see what the problem is here from the recounts in the media you got what you asked for. I have been involved in a raid before and when the police man says dont use your phone it means DONT USE YOUR PHONE and when he says lie on the floor it means LIE ON THE FLOOR. If you dont follow the instructions then they are going to use force to make you comply. SIMPLE! - Police supporter

      An alternative scenario...
    11/03/2008 14:04
Saturday evening, the SAPD arrived at Bohemia, all dressed up in clown suits with toy guns, with the firm intention to perform a drug raid. Prior to their entrance, they used loudspeakers to inform the students inside that a drug raid will take place and that anyone who would prefer to get rid of any drugs in the nearest toilet, only have 5 minutes to do so. Then the police entered the bar and after cracking a few jokes with the students, proceeded to have a few drinks themselves. - mieliepit

      Insensitive Logic_Bomb?
    11/03/2008 14:05
Perhaps you should be more sensitive to the victims of drug abuse and to the police who do the dirty work of trying to manage the situation. We have all (most) been clubbing. We all know there will be raid sometimes. If you are going to take the risk of visiting a spot and you know there are drugs around. Don't act like a girl when the cops push you aside while trying to find the bstrds - fern

Truth hurts junkies. Leister hierso boys: when the same force was used against black people in townships, it was called necessary force to flush out terrorists and "siyayinyovas" En vandag, you expect the police to tip junkies about intended raids. Oh! no shut up, junkie!!! - Tomas

      What about studying????????
    11/03/2008 14:06
Police brutality is regrettable as well as sexual abuse that was reported, however students should learn that they belong in the lecture room and not in some Bohemia intoxication rendezvous. What the hell was happening in the wee hours of the morning? Are they not supposed to be asleep to wake-up cleverer? Parents don't foot the bill for drunks, I have less pity for them. Learn to study, play sport and sleep. - Libembe

      Read this twice
    11/03/2008 14:07
This is really disturbing (having seen the video clips). Its good the police are trying to root out drug use and all that, but hitting people with guns and molesting women is not the way to go. Its unfortunate, the "holier than thou" attitude that is being passed down from the upper regions of their management (government). Its sad, this country is truly ill. - Coetzee

If the police don't do their work we complain, if they do their work we complain! SA are filled with ruthless gangster so it is only right that our men in blue are not poofters but real hard crime busters, this was a raid to look for drugs so everyone was suspects...we all want an eye for eye to curb our high crime rate so when the police macho up we act like cry babies - Fokoffpolisiekar Live

      THERE WERE NO DRUGS!!
    11/03/2008 14:08
This place is not even a 'club' it's a 'regular' student bar, frequented mostly by 1st and 2nd year students. Running in there with guns, hitting girls and spraying them with pepper spray is not only wrong, but cowardly and sickening! Stellenbosch SAPS truely are SCUM!! - Juan

I am all for fighting drug abuse but...
    11/03/2008 14:08
why were only a few grams of dagga found and no-one arrested? Apparently the drug dealers were OUTSIDE in the NEXT DOOR parking lot. Someone didnt do their homework. Tackle the real criminals and you will get the full support of the South African public. When Zille marched on the home of a KNOWN druglord, SHE got arrested - and he carries on destroying the lives of thousands of young people.Police brutality is unacceptable. The video shows that the youngsters didnt fight back but got maced anyway - DW

I suppose these were mostly students. Much as I will not condone this barbaric actions on students my concern is what were these students doing at night clubs that time of the night. Weren't they supposed to be studying or in bed? The police will always be seen as the enemy whether they do good or bad. - CB

      Refused
    11/03/2008 14:11
From what I heard from a couple of people is that they were denied their right to lay charges. Excuses was given and nobody could lay charges on Saturday and Sunday. Yes, pro raids, and accept that the initial charge has to be done swiftly, but after everyone has calmed and is on the ground, why do you need to kick, hit and through women around, spray people with pepper spray because they made a video? How can this possibly be justified? Bohemia and Mystic has always been piecefull. Sprinkbok, well, maybe a little bit more force... - Angry

      Insensitive
    11/03/2008 14:15
Just for the record, these "clubs" are not really drug houses. The amount of drugs traiding hands inside these spesific establishments will probably be less than your average grocery store. The police did something that has some value in a way that was totally inappropriate. If you were a 19 year old girl and a male policemen shoved his hands down your crotch, would you say: "I dont mind, I know you had a hard day and you are only trying to do your job"? - grotman

      Thank You SAPS

This was necesary my friend...so you wanted the police to plead with you???we have heard that these girls were spewing insults at the police..then in return the police pepper sprayed their asses..th police found two joints in the peocess..what were students doing with drugs??big up SAPS..this kids were taught to believe that they can say anything to the police..the man in blue deserves some respect like the Judges..their duties is to inforce the law..SAPS YOU ROCK - kolobe

    11/03/2008 14:21
Police raid on students not being able to defend themselves or not violent=maximum force used, BUT the other half of the country do marches, throw stones/petrol bombs, cause chaos on our streets and the SAPS just watch them??Makes perfect sense!?Thats why students make "fake" footage to get their point accross about being forced into accepting everything being fed to them...like integretation. - Richard

Do you really think they had the need to shoot the shotgun in the one club? Do you even go to these nightclubs? And fern, you say its all part of the bigger picture, now tell me, did they arrest any dealers? Please think before you say stuff like this because you have no idea of what is going on in Stellenbosch and how the SAPS handle the students there. - Wynand

so I suppose you agree that police have every right to sexually abuse women, as well as hitting people around for no reason and to fire their weapons in the middle of a crouded bar... FOR NO REASON. It seems to be another 'my cock is bigger than yours' case. SAPS you should be ashamed of yourselves! I hope to see more of these. Crush the mieliepitte and mash the dealers and users. You are all adult and responsible, so be careful with whom and where you hangout. The law-abiding people of this country have been pleading for action to be taken. We always hear that drugs is at the root of society's problems...well this raid was being carried out at the roots....where the dealers and users frequent. - 2 thumbs up

To Tomas and Fern and a few others
    11/03/2008 14:29
Police has intel on drug dealings at your local Dros seeing that some local drug lords visit there. So they desice to storm the place when you are in there nice and pissed. You trying to get to the floor with your baby get pushed and smacked by a SAPS person because you take your time, some poor chef gets shot because he has a knife in his hands. No arrests/no drugs. BUT your fine with that, drug lords hang out there so the rest of the people are Junkies too? No one minds drug raids!! - Mash

      Ignorance
    11/03/2008 14:29

      Such sissies
    11/03/2008 14:29
I cannot believe this. No one died! So what - a punch there; pepper sprayed there; kicked there - welcome to the real world. We are now finally getting the same treatment that people in the townships are getting daily. A woman (nearly 40) from Gugulethu was beaten red&blue by the cops for just asking - who's knocking at my door at this hour? She was punched, kicked, etc...And, it turns out, the cops have the wrong house!!! But, no apologies to the poor woman. - Busi

      Kolobe
    11/03/2008 14:32
After reading the article about kolobe recently i thought this was a decent, sensible guy. Either i was wrong or you're a liar. 300 people and two joints? Must have been mighty big joints to make 300 people guilty don't you think? How can two joint legitimise the brutality of this so called "bust"? - John Camp

what if it was your daughter?
    11/03/2008 14:34
To all the people saying the students deserved it, what would you do if it was your daughter who was out on a Friday night having a drink with friends, and then being maced, shoved, slapped and indecently assaulted by a policeman? Would you still say that the students deserved it then? - c

Yes S'bos SAP services are going to take complaints against themselves. This is not the first time something like this happened to me or my friends. I truly hope that you can one day experince the frinedly police officers pepperspraying you, taking your money, hitting your wife across the face and pinnig your daughter to the floor while feeling her up. - For Fern

Don't talk if you don't know
    11/03/2008 14:36
I live in the area and have been to those places. They are very LOW on the drug list.If you want to find stacks of drugs, raid a trance party or a proper club. Not some hang out area. The amount of drugs they found is pitiful.I hate drugs,I think they're a pathetic exit from reality. But if you're going to raid for drugs,do it in a place with drugs and addicts/dealers.I applaud the students who are going to protest.UNITE AND TAKE A STAND AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY! - Kane

      Disgusting.
    11/03/2008 14:36
I cant believe they just chucked you in the van like that. I hope you sue them. - e

Mieliepit, CB and all you other idiots...
    11/03/2008 14:37
that have plenty to say... but what if were your daughter, son, girlfriend, child? Would you still be so blas?bout a police officer waving a firearm as if in a western movie, or conduct a body search while making obscene remarks or shove people (that offered NO resistance) around the way they did? This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and ALL of the police involved should be fired. Brave as they are, taking on students instead of the dealers (who fight back btw) - Vernon Wolf

      BUSI
    11/03/2008 14:40
"..now finally getting the same treatment that people in the townships are getting daily..." The cops were wrong and if township people are too stupid to do anything about it, then ag shame! - balbyter

      Nothing to worry about
    11/03/2008 14:41
you have just witnessed people's basic human rights being violated by the police, being hit in the face with guns, pepperspray for no reason (they were spewing insults? ag shame, does the policeman want a hug?) and there are some of you defending the cops. sickening, all big mouth till they're knocking down your door one night. this is fascism, pure and simple, and it's not just there, have you seen the footage of the way to cops treat the striking students in PTA? fascism, pure and simple. - Lumukanda

      To Police supporter
    11/03/2008 14:41
And when the cops catch YOU (and I hope they do) and say drop your pants and spread your legs cos its time to be raped, you must comply as well.. ok... And I hope he pepper sprays u wen done! - nicky

      @ Zinzisile
    11/03/2008 14:43
Zinzisile, why would you make such a comment? Your comment is uncalled for and racist. This is such a typical comment from someone like you ;) - DHV

      Um, a little tact maybe
    11/03/2008 14:44
How does busting into a student jol, guns blazing, pepper spray flying, in full tactical gear seem justified to some people. Come on, it can't be that hard to send someone undercover, suss the place out, and THEN go in gun blazing if they find out that everyone is doing coke and packing AK's. They over stepped the line in completely the wrong way, and when those students get their degrees, it's gonna be goodbye SA, and more loss of skill in our workforce - Ross

      It's their prerogative
    11/03/2008 14:47
Students are students. They kuier till all hours of the night. You have absolutely no right to judge them for the way they choose to spend their Friday night/Saturday morning. If they feel like going big over the weekend because they worked hard during the week, that is their prerogative. The police is just trying to cover themselves. Again... - Barbs

      crazy all around
    11/03/2008 14:48
Firstly Bohemia and Mystic are known to be two of the most chilled out venues in Stellenbosch, therefore SWAT tactics are known to be unnecessary. Secondly surely the best and quickest method to find contraband is to use sniffer dogs, very quick and accurate. Thirdly, what were male officers doing searching females - that is legally and morally unacceptable. Lastly this kind of excessive use of force has been used before, often in townships as they could get away with it. Its still wrong. - BH

      Much ado about nothing
    11/03/2008 14:48
If this happened in a shebeen in Soweto, almost everyone would be congratulating the police. Get bloody used to it. If you wish to stop crime, then drugs should be one of the targets - LvH

      Pathetic Zinzi!
    11/03/2008 14:48
I am dumb-founded! This shows why Mugabe, Hitler et al got popular. "Normal" people shouting "yeah!" when rights are ignored. Yes, this has been happening in the townships and it bullsh.., it should be stopped anywhere! Zinzile, why is your reaction "good that whiteys feel" instead of "stop police brutality"? This shows how sick this society is. The same idiots give the same senseless comment. - Andre

      "druge dens"
    11/03/2008 14:51
ignorance. i completely agree with you. The people commenting here that assume bohemia and mystic boer are "drug dens" and "junkie hangouts" are so completely deluded. Do you guys not realise where ACTUAL drugs are dealt and REAL crimes are being commited? To think of bohemia or any of these relaxed "meeting" places as a danger to society is idiotic. Please, if you would like to see real drug dealers, go to Kloetesville where Tik layers the pavements, or take a stroll down sea point main road. - mullet

      Re: Busi
    11/03/2008 14:51
Dude this has NEVER been a race issue. I'm sure police can use force, ONLY when necessary. But beating up women and kicking and pepper spraying people that showed NO resistance is WRONG!! It is WRONG no matter what the color of the victim is. Unfortunately, I am willing to bet money that these cops will get a slap on the wrist at most. - Juan

      Massive Drug Bust
    11/03/2008 14:52
Junkies will always complain: what kind of a statement is that? I am not a junkie nor have I touched drugs but what the cops did was totally unacceptable. All to find a pathetic 3 joints and some hash! Wow that's pretty impressive SAPS. You really out did yourselves! Get your fingers out of eachothers backsides and start doing the work that REAL cops are meant to do! They are supposed to be law inforcers not law breakers. - Shocked

      Pro-active
    11/03/2008 14:53
We want the cops to be tough, but they should be tough with them. We want metro cops to monitor our roads, but they should only arrest taxi drivers and the lot of "them." We demand this and that from government, but the moment we get affected, we bitch and moan like there is no tomorrow. What do authorities do? Do raids in black areas and arrest only taxi drivers? - L van Heerden

      Lets just stay home! -.-
    11/03/2008 14:54
The cops having done this only makes the young people of today want to stay home, and soon we people will be to afraid to go out and enjoy themselves because of the criminals and useless police! As for the cops that did all the beating, try to remember there faces next time, they will have to go home sometime and this time they will be alone.....let the ass kicking begin!! - Taking Action!

Fight for your right to Party
    11/03/2008 14:54
All those who are knocking the students for their actions and applauding the cops were obviously at home tossing themselves off to third rate porno movies on E tv.I've been at the most notorious club 330 a couple of times when it was raided even when carte blanche popped in with their cameras. No one was ever misshandled and no excessive force was used ever.Even though the patrons were off their nuts on booze and drugs. for.By the way CB what the hell is a spoilt brad huh!? - psycobabble

      student towns
    11/03/2008 14:55
This sort of behaviour is indicative of police in student towns. Ask any student from Rhodes, Grahamstown. In a way, you can understand the police' lack of respect towards students because they do not receive it from the students. I'm sure the police are gatvol of the drugs, drunk in public, vandalising, drunk driving, etc. that are commonly associated with students. But that doesn't excuse abuse of power! - Michelle Hardy

      Busi...
    11/03/2008 14:55
"I cannot believe this. No one died! So what - a punch there; pepper sprayed there; kicked there - welcome to the real world. " So you condone the KOVSIES student's actions as well? The victims in their video where smiling ,no one got punched or sprayed so no harm done in your opinion? - Dirk

      Odd
    11/03/2008 14:58
That some of the people who complained about the Free State being blown out of proportion are now spending eternity on this issue, when the police were simply doing their job - Len Anderson

I am not a Junkie just because I smoke pot!!!
    11/03/2008 15:00
I like to smoke marijuana, that does not make me a junkie or a criminal, lots of people might have the ignorant opinion that I am, but thats just because they were taught that way and never experienced. "All right Johnny, point on the doll where the marijuana plant touched you"! I will just sit back and laugh at the ignorance in SA :D - Bob Marley

      Ernie
    11/03/2008 15:01
Get a life babes!!! we seem tired of uncecessary complains and mind if there is reasonable grounds for police to act, then they must not tip the likes of you because they are trying to save ur lives from drugs!!! period - Tomas

      Get over it!!
    11/03/2008 15:01
What's the big fuss?Coloured clubs and township pubs get raided all the time in practically the same manner and no one complains about it-coz nobody has anything to feel guilty. But the minute something happens to a bunch of white students who are supposed to be good academic youths from Stellenbosch University, everybody is up in arms. And yes, everything in life is about race.We complain about the police not doing proper jobs in crime busting, but when they do their jobs, that is an issue too! - Janice

      If only
    11/03/2008 15:02
the SAPS could use the same enthusiasm and GO AFTER RAPISTS, MURDERERS, ROBBERS AND HIJACKERS INSTEAD!!!!Geezzzz, leave our kids alone, I wonder what this whole sting cost us? Get real and DO YOU F@#$$&*G JOB SAPS!!!!! - Barb

      Idiocracy
    11/03/2008 15:03
OK first off, anyone who said that this was in any way good is a retard! Raids are fine but crap like this happening all the time is insane! i've been to the places many times and have NEVER personally spotted drugs, now i'm not ignorant, i know there are but my point is, its so little that 90% of the people there dont even know about it! and secondly busi, your and idiot! how can you say just becuase it happens in other places asswell its fine!? it should never happen! not to anyone! - Niel

      Oh please
    11/03/2008 15:04
Here we go again, Black people who think only they are ever victims. I have endured raids for the last 12 years in Durban and everyone of them has been brutal. I use to be a cop back in the eighties and I saw all skin colours been roughed up by the cops. Stop whinging. - Boohoo

      Just a comment
    11/03/2008 15:04
Mieliepit you make me sick with remarks like the one you made you clearly have nothing else to do. I wonder if it was you or a member of your family how you would have reacted. - carol

??? and to hell with civil liberties??
    11/03/2008 15:07
It is hard for me to understand that people believe that it is OK for the SAPS to go around arbitrarily pepper spraying civilians, dishing out "klaps" etc... I understand that the SAPS boys are trying to do a job in a thankless society, but that does not excuse the infringement of human rights ever!!! and Busi just because one humans rights are abused does not make it right to abuse someone else's. This whole escapade should be an embarrassment to the police and SA. - aelric

      Ben S
    11/03/2008 15:07
BenS. Not all policemen are incapable as you are saying, I have been there so have four other of my family, however, we all left the police. Also not all policemen beat their wives and guzzle brandy & coke as you are implying. Do yourself (and all other who is complaining)a favour and go and work one night shift with the police, then you will see what they have to deal with on a daily basis, not only stupid, drunken, coke sniffing students...Assh#le! - J.

      Rule of Law
    11/03/2008 15:08
If we allow our police to act like this, what is the point of the New SA? Is it so the police can now abuse all races. If so, this is a truly sad state of affairs. It is apparent that none of the SAPS supporters posting above have any idea what the "rule of law" means. No, it does not mean the SAPS can do as they please. Where are the arrests and where is the evidence? If the force was justified, where are the confiscated weapons? SAPS bungled it! - sisonke

      SAPS a disgrace
    11/03/2008 15:08
After all the video evidence and statements, I still can't believe some people can say things like they deserve it because they were drunk or wrong place wrong time. Please wake up, first it was the start to a weekend so everyone is relaxing after a week of lextures and 2nd like any normal youngster they would party and drink as Stellenbosch is or should I say was the last safe haven for this. I don't care what anyone says or if people flung verbal abuse at the "PIGS" they can't just assault you - Mark

      FOR EVER MOURNING - whites
    11/03/2008 15:08
Can someone tell what the stupid girl was doing standing when told to get down!!!!! hence the force....just put 2 and 2 together and stop complaining. Further, you can clear see one of the pupils there resisting getting down or being taken away....then tell me the police are supposed to plead with that person and not use force......you'll are idiots and complaining about nonsense...WHITES dont rule hear......i say use force especially if they are not LISTING to orders like the idiots in the video - Sanda

      ... to Steve French
    11/03/2008 15:09
When the cops command you to face the wall and raise your arms during a raid, you obey, don't try to be smart with them or ask juvenile questions ... simply as that. - Gonzo

You just don't get it do you
    11/03/2008 15:09
This has been going on for way too long. Apartheid gave these idiots too much power. We had regular run ins with police for doing absolutely nothing. They were, almost to a man, ignorant, steroid addled, bitter losers always looking to pick on people. they met their match with us, not so small you see, and regularaly got given a hiding. As for people being threatened by cops, please fool, they do it all the time, and there threats are real. Condone this, and you will be next. Ignorant sheep! - 80s Student

      sister, daughter, girlfriend
    11/03/2008 15:10
Watch the video and then decide if you condone the force the police used. Put your girlfriend, wife, sister, mother, etc, in the place of the girls who were hit, sprayed and thrown around. - bangersandnash.com

CRIMINAL ACTS BY THE SAPS at STELLENBOSCH.
    11/03/2008 15:10
ILLEGAL pointing of a firearm. ILLEGAL discharge of a firearm in public. MALICIOUS damage to property. SEXUAL assault. ASSAULT.(common) ASSAULT.(GBH) THEFT. The SAPS criminals responsible should be investigated by the ICD and when convicted, sentenced to jail or fired. What next, rubber hoses, wet sacking over the heads and midnight abductions? PROTECT YOUR PERSONAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS! - Bodie

      Police Abuse
    11/03/2008 15:11
Reading the comments of people like mieliepit, libembe, CB and a couple of other, you get the impression that they enjoyed the idea of students getting beat up because theyr're privileged enough to go and study. (or previously advantaged) Had one very similar experience. - Herman

      Love the SAPS
    11/03/2008 15:11
AWESOME...I love it that the police performed a raid. The fewer drugs on our streets, clubs, pubs, whatever, the better for us all. It's not the student smoking the dope that is the problem, but the big dealer that assaults & murders to become "kingpin"...which is why I find it absolutely REVOLTING that the police attacked the 'small-fry' and didn't target the 'big-fish'. The problem is that the 'big-fish' probably fight back, yes? TARGET THE BIG BAD MAN!! - EmTee

Lets rather pick on the soft targets
    11/03/2008 15:12
Intersting that the cops prefer soft targets rather than act against the gang infested suburbs close by, where innocent people are being killed far too often in drug wars. But I suppose it's less dangerous to pick on inibriated unarmed students! Similar to traffic cops who fine Mr average motorist for minor issues rather than nail taxis who cause more than 50% of our road deaths. There again less dangerous!! - FT

      Shameful attitude Ernie
    11/03/2008 15:15
Shameful is not supporting the cops when we are in a war against crime. All sources need to be attacked. I don't care if its just a prissy girl with a bankie. nuff said on this... - fern

      one more thing
    11/03/2008 15:17
And for those who cry for a continuation of such police actions.. "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" - David Hume (1760) - aelric

      CB
    11/03/2008 15:17
hey cb in case you havent noticed, we like fun and if that involves us getting drunk and throwing name then let it go you bitter old person. jees just chill - Ricky James

      You idiots!
    11/03/2008 15:20
To all of you who think this was just the wrong place at the wrong time and "boo hoo".. you are ignorant, useless, apathetic idiots.. If you allow this kind of blatant disregard for basic civilian rights we will soon be living in a very frightening place. You have no feelings for you fellow citizens but I very much doubt if this had been your experience you would be screaming for someones head.. You are the reason every sane, forward thinking South African would rather be anywhere but here. - angry

Speak up against ALL forms of brutality
    11/03/2008 15:20
This is the time where we should all unite and speak up against police brutality. EEVERYONE, from the women in Gugulethu to the students in Stellenbosch and
