While I do not subscribe wholly to all of Lize's viewpoints, and while I'd be more wary of papers selling rosier scenarios than actual ones, she makes a number of very good and valid arguments, backed up by some research (as opposed to mere emotion). Good on you, Lize. - Jaco |

We can reverse the spiral of negativity 17/03/2008 09:00
Quite right Liza, but then bad news is what sells copies ? and that?s the reality about what drives the content in the media. We, the general public, are often just as guilty as the media. For example, look at the content of my.NEWS24 last week and you will see that the majority of letters all had a negative spin. Respondents use the forum to vent their prejudices and seldom provide any positive comment, hence exacerbating this negativity. How about we declare this positivist/anti-prejudice week and see how many GOOD and POSITIVE comments we can send out there? Just an idea! - mikehunt |

SPOT ON 17/03/2008 09:04
The press is very much against anything positive about RSA even before the election(1994) they were so negative and stirring up hatred and fear amongst whites to an extent that whites were stockpiling fearing the end of them. The same medialaughed at them calling them racist who fear change. They (media)are really pathetic. - scorpion |

SA....... 17/03/2008 09:05
SA is still turning into a typical African Country where crime controls all, the goverment is full of criminals. SA africa is No 4 in the world with murders, the top three are most likely WAR torn countries ( We Not). "Australia has the highest burglaries and car thefts per capita in the world", are they being killed or raped for there cars, NO. - guess |

Could not say it any better 17/03/2008 09:06
I totally agree. Should one not open a Naspers newspaper or website for a week or so, it feels like one has moved to another European country/Australia already. The Afrikaans media in this country has only one objective - to stir shit. If they cannot find enough shit, they invent it.

Spin 17/03/2008 09:11
Adding positive spin to news will not change the reality of serious structural problems in South Africa, namely desperate poverty, absurdly violent crime, and a return to race as a yardstick for decision making by the government. None of the positives you mention above can outweigh these negatives. Perhaps the press can help bump the politicians and leaders out of denial, which will be the start to recovery. - Jan |

I agree!! 17/03/2008 09:11
I have been having the same line of thought for quite some time. The SA newspapers, and especially the Afrikaans newspapers, are sensationalizing many of the headline stories they cover. I would also put a lot of the current negative sentiments in our country squarely on the shoulders of the local editors. The problem is that this is the only newsfeed that a lot of people on the street receive. No wonder some of the people on these blogs are so damn ignorant. - pietpompies |

Doom and gloom 17/03/2008 09:11
I could not agree with you more. It seems as if SA newspapers do not believe that there can be good news in SA. When the baggage theft happened in OR Tambo for example, we never got comparison with other airports in order to make comparison. I am not saying baggage theft is right but we need more balance reporting. More research into a topic. When the president highlighted this fact he was rubbished by the newspaper editors/columnists. Thanks for the informed article. - Pasta |

What's positive? 17/03/2008 09:16
What's positive about reading about a 61 year old frail woman who was burned with a clothes iron, had her fingers broken, stabbed repeatedly and raped? We are not talking about petty crime here, we are dealing with viscous racist murderers who think it's OK to prey on old folk. - Nick |

Good news is no news 17/03/2008 09:16
At last, someone with some perspective on the world! It just proves once again that the media is only succeeding in polarizing our Nation against each other, instead of being responsible corporate citizens with the goal of strengthening our country's image, both locally and abroad. I am not saying that we only need to see a rosy picture in the papers, but a balanced view will go a long way to strengthen our resolve in the face of adversity. - Frustrated |

I fully agree 17/03/2008 09:17
Lize, I fully support you. I am so fed up with reading and hearing BAD news, that I actually limit reading and watching the news. It sometimes seems as though the media want us to immegrate. We all know what the situation in the country is, therefore we need some GOOD news and perspective to at least try and give us (and our children)hope!! - Isabel |

marketing strategy 17/03/2008 09:17
south african press is more on negative actions for sales figure, look at daily sun is reporting about witch craft, and this other stupid things, and is the best selling daily news paper in south africa, also it tend to be a marketing startegyfor the press to write nagirtev becuase more people are interest in negatives than positive, made see this as advantage to them.so please editor build this nation, give hope to the citizen of this country, - vts |

If the shoe fits......... 17/03/2008 09:18
Who gives a damn about what happens comparitively in other countries? What matters is what is happening on our own doorstep and it needs to be reported. Does it make it any less important because we are no. 4 on the murder list? I bet that the first three do not have the tortue and cruelty that comes with SA murders! - Zoltar |

Media condones racism indirectly 17/03/2008 09:18
I believe the that negetive reporting can either be desructive and constructive,we need editors who can strike the right balance.
I like it when they expose the criminals, corrupt government officials etc,but yes it is true that half of the time the media does corrupt us in thinking that whites and blacks will need accept each other. - Ledombolo |

Open your eyes, reality is around you, racism is everywhere, crime is everywhere and it needs to be reported on, whether you like it or not! Whinging Seth Africans 17/03/2008 09:22
I'm not a South African. I live here by choice. There is nothing more depressing than going to a braai and listening to a bunch of white south Africans do thier thing...moan, moan, moan. No not all of them. I find that the bigger the moaner the more ignorant and naive they tend to be. You would think our problems only happen here and no where else. Safety most important 17/03/2008 09:23
I want to know the most important news. For me that is my family's safety and crime affects that. Although you make some good points, I cannot think that ignoring the truth is a solution. You know what they say about investors 17/03/2008 09:26
if people talk about a negative wave its already too late to get out of the market. So yes, negative publicity is bad for this country. But we should not hide the fact that people are being tortured and killed for next to nothing all over the country just for the sake of investors. Awareness towards crime is the first step to combating it. Sweeping things under the rug will not help us one bit. We get enough propaganda on SABC channels. - M |

poor reporting all round 17/03/2008 09:28
once you take a look at reporting in other countries you realise how shocking the SA situation is... its not just that all news seems to be bad, the story arc is never followed. So for instance, the crime is always reported, but then we never find out if they catch the guys. Or we find out about a shot cop, but then never hear if he recovers or dies. Some corruption is identified but then we never find out what happens to the perpetrators. We are kept in the dark... - baker |

People being tortured to death is a REALITY and not some false story being made up by 'afrikaans newspapers'! - Juan |

What is your agenda? 17/03/2008 09:35
Lize, your arguments are weak. It is absolutely important that the media keeps the issue of crime on the front page, especially in the context of a government who has failed to take adequate measure to combat it. What is the point of saying that SA is now nr 4 in murder rates, without listing those countries with higher statistics? And even if we were no 10, what is happening is unacceptable. We need more attention drawn to this, not less. Presenting only a rosy picture will not benefit abybody - GRBoy |

Would it suit you better if the newspapers dish up a lot of lies? Would it suit you better if they would all swept the crime, murders, rape and violence under the carpet, painting a ROSY picture for the whole of SA??? I can just read the headlines..." What a peaceful country SA is.." Be real, Lize! This is what is going on in SA! We have the right to know about it so we can make informed decision! And they close their news wit an animal from offshore that performs maricles. Seriously - it disgusts me. - Malebza |

BE OBJECTIVE 17/03/2008 09:37
GOOD ARTICLE LIZE ? I agree 100% with you. The main purpose of the press is to inform the public by giving them all the facts ie being objective and give both sides of the story rather that being emotional and report on a personal point of view. - colin |

So you are suggesting that journalists lie then?
SHould they write that there is NO load shedding? That the cirrpution case against JZ was a april fools joke? That HIV does not really exist? You suggesting people write lies just to make this country 'look' better, even though its going to hell? OR should the papers reflect what is REALLY going on here? - Juan |

Agree and Disagree 17/03/2008 09:42
I agree with you, SA news papers are reporting negatively, and also, using unnamed sources as fact far to many times, but i also look at foreign sites, and they use any murder a lot more, than SA's newspapers. A women burned with an iron and killed will be placed on page 4 with us already. Things are bad in SA, and saying they aren't won't make things better. Also, note on Australia, they crime rate increased since SA citizend immigrated there, tells you something doesn't it - Dawid |

I Disagree 17/03/2008 09:42
Liza, last week Thursday I personally witnessed a smash and grab involving the car directly infront of me. I was mortified. There was nothing I could do. If I got out to chase the guy who knows where his "buddies" were hiding ready to ambush a daring do-gooder. So take your stats and your hippy hug-a-tree mentality and open your eyes to the horrible reality that surrounds you! - MP3 |

Truth hard to hear? 17/03/2008 09:44
Im not interested in the car theft rate in Oz or the murders in Columbia. Im interested in the violent way in which crime is carried out HERE, in my own backyard. While some headlines may be emotive writing (even positive ones are) the stories are real and very relevant. Instead of worrying about the way media reports you should worry that there are these kinds of things to report at all! - Mike |

Australian crime??? 17/03/2008 09:48
You say Aussie has the highest per capita of burglaries and car theft? WOW! I must be living elsewhere then. The TV Networks recently showed a "Dramatic Robbery at a Service Station" recently. The guy came in with a knife (I swear it was a butter knife without even a serrated edge) waved it about and demanded money. When the manager refused, he grabbed a bag of sweets off the counter and ran away. We all burst out laughing and our Aussie guests were quite offended. Aussie crime vs SA crime? Pff! - KevinBrisbane |

Whats important. 17/03/2008 09:48
Whats important in life is LIFE. South AFricans need to be made aware of the crime statistics at all times!! Whether we are 4th or 400th in the world for that matter is irrelevant. The crime in South Africa is inbred into the majority of the human race. Fact...accept it and deal with it. - denzil |

Perspective 17/03/2008 09:48
I disagree. These things need to be sensationalised so that we stop the current desensitisation that is happening in society. As things happen more and more they become part of society. If we tone down the messages on crime then they become part of the accepted norm, "accept it and learn to live with it". What rubbish. None of it should ever be acceptable. - Richard |

My beautiful country. 17/03/2008 09:51
On Friday, I might have agreed with you, but hearing last night of the brutal murder of two wonderful, giving, loving and peaceful elderly people in Somerset West, makes it very diffucult. Unfortunately the papers are a true reflection of what is happening. In the NP days, they ruled the press, and we like idiots, believed that everything all was fine. Our friends and families overseas told us about atrocities. No, this is SA today, face facts...horror upon horror. God Bless SA. - Alicia |

Just wait for hate mail for your stand on this matter.I usually try my best to read foreign newspapers and i discover that the same problems that we have here exist elsewhere. There was an article in News24 sometime ago concerning falling healthcare in the UK,how patients were dying because of lack of care in govt hospitals.Youth crime in the Uk is well known.Electricity problems are not unique to SA.But it's a waste of time to argue,i'm not saying it is right, just that the whole world immoral. - Godfrey |

news reporting 17/03/2008 10:01
Well, if newspapers should, as you suggest, put only good news on the front page and tuck in bad news somewhere at the back, we sure would have a lot of blank front pages. Be realistic Lize, at the moment there's not enough good news to fill the page of a pocket notebook. We should acknowledge that, and because every one of us, black and white and inbetween, is affected, we should all try and work against it. What you suggest is not a solution. Blinkers never were. - taurus |

Journalists have low self esteem 17/03/2008 10:08
I agree with the writer. But people should know that when the media get hold of something, it is going to be distorted eg the Zuma shower saga. Hey but instant karma will get you. - peter Biro |

Both ways 17/03/2008 10:11
Although I agree on most of what was said. Racism works both ways. Report on black on white racism and much as white on black. It does not automatically mean someone is racist just because you don't like someone of the opposite colour. I am a white who does not like some whites, just like some blacks dislike some blacks. It's personality, not colour!! - ALS |

Wrong 17/03/2008 10:12
I don?t see why stories like this:
http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2289349,00.html 'There was blood on the ceiling' - should be moved to page three. Instead I think this kind of brutality should be plastered all over the main page and left there for days so people can be warned and the world can see what kind of animals we are dealing with here. Please pinch me 4 a reality check 17/03/2008 10:18
The press doesn't make news good or bad, it is a reality & 2 blame the press 4 their slant is naive. There is very little 2 b positive about & it gets worse & worse. Take the call by the NEC 4 Mbeki 2 come clean. With all due respects this is a body with a "corrupt" Zuma as its head who is using your money 2 fight tooth and nail 4 evidence to be suppressed. On top of it this esteemd body has some 33% of its members who are either convicted criminals or investigation. How do make this positve? - martin albert |

Warped focus 17/03/2008 10:22
True. Take the whole Kovsie video for example. Although what the students did can never be excused or tolerated, we don't see the faces and names of farm killers in the papers every day. I don't see the photos and names of people who kill for a mere cellphone sprawled on the first page. I am inclined to believe that as everything happens for a reason, this is done so as to undermine the black man?s government. This is done to discredit those in charge of this country. From the department of health to department of what what, all you hear is negative and nothing good is happening.
Yes indeed, we are not saying a blind eye should be turned on things that are happening. It is true that SA has a crime problem but the way it?s being magnified it?s as though SA is the only country that has this kind of a problem.
To all the news paper editors out there, please stop selling us ?makwinya? we need nutrition to feed our minds ? ningazosidina la!!!!

I agree 200% with Lize 17/03/2008 10:25
Newspapers, talk radio stations, any news bulleting, all we hear is negativity! This is what I've been saying for a long time. By the time you get to work you've heard about murders, rapes, burglaries, hijackings. How do we then have a positive mindset? Not that the crime does not exist but that it's IMPOSSIBLE to actually believe that all we have is negative. Especially News24 because it's my home page, most of their reporting is gory details! I suppose bad news sells... - Kgomotso |

Media 17/03/2008 10:26
While I agree with this article, it's a bit naive to think that the press should focus on positive or even neutral news items for the sake of the citizens' morale. It is an industry and they're in it for the money. Also, it's also not good to have them write news articles which are overly positive all the time because thats simply another form of bias comparable to Chinese propaganda state news. Neutrality is difficult to find these days. Find decent, reputable publications to read, News24 excl. - Michael |

Idiot 17/03/2008 10:30
The press report it as it is. Our country is in deep shit and ignoring it won't make a difference. Making everybody aware of it and spuring them into action will make things better! So stop trying to defend these lying ANC bastards! - Dave |

Our culture of blame shifting! 17/03/2008 10:34
I support truthful reporting as a feedback based mechanism in a democratic society. However, there are certain challenges with such a system that I will try to highlight. Reporting should be a reflection of events and should not determine or influence social mood or action. This however is easier said than done. The companies that report the news are businesses and the make their money selling newspapers and getting people tuned into television stations. This makes it a difficult task to discern between responsible reporting and good business. Good business caters for the every need of the customer and I am sad to say that the public has an insatiable need for controversy and violence. Think about that statement next time you slow down to look at the accident on the other side of the road. Although I believe that the media is contributing to the negative atmosphere in South Africa, it is still the people buying the newspapers and tuning into the television stations that are keeping them business. Vote with your actions not your mouth! - Charles Scheepers |

What in your opinion exactly is it that "White South Africans" dont get? It is of course your choice to go to these braai's and listen to moans or is it that you are out of touch with the reality of everyday life? - den |

refreshing. yes, agree with you 100%. SA is not all bad news. it's not even mostly bad news. we do have crime and all the other nonsense going on in the world today, but when people start getting the news from their neighbours etc (ie start communicating) they'll realise we ARE succeeding in turning this place around!! - mm |

Leave the media alone 17/03/2008 10:41
They're doing their job & are still reasonably controlled through ethics. Obviously you're to filter any information to separate fact & opinion - the system expects a certain level of education from readers. Democracy is built on the availability of information 2 t public.
The disparity of information between media & government is caused by government. There's a lack of honesty, respect & ability to visualise rather than conceptualise.
The racist reaction to media's symptom of OUR illness. - Pieter Joubert |

Head in the Sand 17/03/2008 10:45
I agree, give us some more good news as it is under reported. BUt don't think that it is all rosey out there. Maybe our media is not that bad and they are reflecting the true state of the nation. The bad is still very bad and should not be ignored. I dont want to be kept in the dark and misled as was during apartheid. Face the facts even if you dont like them. - Boet |

I love the "african" way of thinking 17/03/2008 10:47
If something doesn't suite you, just change it. So if there is a high murder rate, lets focus on the nice rain fall we had and that we have enough water again. But wait until the day it hits your family or friends, then you get angry and want to go out and kill people. But yes, the media should also report on things that are going right and they can improve there.I watch etv because 4 1/2 hour I want the truth, no SABC lies/BS, if I wanted bliss, I would sit in my garden and watch the birds. - M |

Yes! for page three "crime" 17/03/2008 10:49
"...crime and bad news are tucked away on page three" in overseas newspapers? I live in London and The Sun's page three is very well known for only one thing: http://www.page3.com/
Now, I'm convinced the majority of readers would agree that we'd like to see more of these type of "page three crime articles!" ;-) - The Sun subscriber |

We need more people like Lisa! 17/03/2008 10:51
The papers really should report the crime, grime, corruption, falling Rand, electricity problems, aids issues, etc. in a more positive light. It will really assist myself and the other realists still around to off-load our assets for a good price to the happily boiling frogs. Lisa, I have a house and boat going, good value, crime free area. Honest. You interested? - Liki |

Less emotionally? 17/03/2008 10:53

........ 17/03/2008 10:56
Godfrey u r right on this one. I read in 1 of the US news papers 2day that the US truckers have come up with a plan to cause lower fuel prices and make the US corporation show its hand. Many are now almost bankrupt from the fuel prices and increases on taxes on their rigs. They are upset that the Mexicans are now taking their jobs because they will work for almost nothing. They are angry at They are angry about banks raising their rates on some short term ticket loans. They are just angry in general - CB |

this country is history 17/03/2008 10:56
please people dont act all happy clappy here we all know this country is busted and heading for total melt down one way or another. it is not possible for so many cultures to live along side one another, and lets face it everything and everything is race related in this country, either give us white our own land with our own economy and let us sort our selves out and we will leave you blacks alone or lets have war, but lets not carry on like everything will be ok. - terence |

Positive Programmes 17/03/2008 11:00
The media will report that the currency is dropping against major international currencies but will never inform you on how to boost this very currency either through government initiatives or through community programmes. There are programmes such as Asgisa, SMME, Jipsa, Nef, Uyf, Gbp etc tec that people do not know about or understand fully and their knowledge in that regard might have a positive outcomes for the country - Zilo |

So what good news do you have to-day? 17/03/2008 11:12
The good things that happen to us every day, in most cases r not newsworthy. Please tell us of anything. I'd love to feel good about my country again.
I'll go first... I got to work safely. No-one had burgled my shop, although they did last week. The economical outlook is so bad, that I have more time to spend on the computer...no customers Thabo Mbeki, with whom I have pleaded b4 might just have the guts to spill the beans. That would make me smile. Have to q |
