Q&A with Alicia
26/03/2008 17:21  - (SA)

  • EXCLUSIVE: Q&A with Kolobe
  • Meet Spazman
  • Who is 'MP3'?
  • Cape Town - As one of the few women who regularly comment on MyNews24, we spent some time getting to know Alicia and found out why she loves to sling it out with rest of us!

    1. Age, sex, location?

I am 61 and live in the Helderberg area of the Cape. I am probably the proudest and staunchest Capetonian ever. I was born at the Booth Memorial Hospital on the slopes of Table Mountain. This fact means so much to me!

    2. You're one of the only women commenting on MyNews24 these days. Why do you think that is?

When one gets older and wiser you want to teach the younger people to sidestep the potholes you fell into. I have been through a lot in my life, but as they say, you have so stand up once more than you fell down.

I have just been to India, and can proudly say that my large circle of friends has increased even further, with seven young people from all over the world coming to visit me soon. To them and many others I am regarded as a very wise old woman... with a very young face and attitude. People ask my advice on many aspects of life, and with the Grace of God, I always have an answer.

    3. You've mentioned before you've seen a lot of changes happening in the country over several years - what do you think about the state of affairs today? Where do you think we're headed?

Hearing the comments from those in other countries, we certainly are going to have problems with investments and tourism, so we are in for a very tough time. If the rest of the world could see that we are trying to change things, then there is hope, and I do not think that the 2010 Wold Cup is a clever idea at all. The money is desperately needed in so many other areas.

In any case, well-read people are scared of coming to SA. I think it's going to turn into a monstrous catastrophe with lots of debt incurred and no returns. At the moment, with Zuma looming, the crime, the crime (I can repeat it 10 times), the electricity crisis, which the rest of the world knows our government was warned of, the outlook is extremely shabby.

We have to start all over and fix everything that has gone wrong since Mbeki took power. We need a 180 degree turn around.

    4. If you could invite three MyNews24 commenters to dinner, who would they be, and why?

Dave Robbins, because he is knowledgeable, sensible and honest. Linda because I'd love to meet another woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. And then there is Sello Someone has to try and open his eyes about the mess we are in, and no Sello, it has nothing to do with racism. Maybe you could then spread a little sense.

    5. Who do you think should be the country's next president? Why?

Kgalema Motlanthe. I have been watching him for years. He is forthright, honest, has loads of integrity and I believe he believes in, and will implement our democracy for the good of all the citizens of this beautiful land.

    6. Do you think it's going to get better for the South African consumer any time soon? What's your advice to those feeling the pinch?

No I think hard times are ahead. My advice would be stay away from the malls and shops. Stick to a list of what you need. Hurry in and buy only that. One tends to "need" this and that if one hangs around malls. If you stay away, you'll never know what you're missing. Don't buy any glossy magazines either. Oh, and read the news: it's interesting, refreshing? the best saga ever!

    7. What do you think of the view that MyNews24 publishes too many racist comments? Do you think it's helpful or hurtful to see what other people really think?

It is unfortunately the sad state we are in, and as a news publisher you are obliged to reflect the true state of affairs. The remarks are no skin off my back, because they are the opinions of those who need help, and usually talk a lot of gibberish. They are sadly stupid and ignorant and refuse to see reality staring them in the face.

In any case, where else would they vent their venomous anger and egos? I pity them.

Thanks for being a voice of sanity Alicia!

GRANNY STICK TO THE FACTS - 2010
    27/03/2008 08:34
Granny please do not comment of an topic you do not have all the facts off - the 2010 world cup is run by professional individuals like Mr Jordaan and Mr Khoza who have given up there lives to ensure we will be the host coming the 2010 WC. This is not the first WC FIFA had to monitor and seeing from the reports in the media FIFA are satisfied with our progress. MR Jordaan is a person of integrity and a great asset for our country and I believe if he is aware of any danger signs which would indicate us not being prepared for the WC he would make it public and give full disclosure. The 2010 WC will be profitable not only just for FIFA but for the entire RSA and will transform our economy and improve the standard of living of many in our country. There is no reason to critisise the LOC for what they have achieved to date VIVA LOC VIVA MR JORDAAN VIVA 2010. - colin

      Thanks for the invite!

Nice getting to know you Alicia! Colin,we are all entitled to our opinions - thats what communication or dialogue is all about. We will never all agree on everything and that's absolutely fine. However what is required is an open mind and a degree of respect. Hope your day is good - Gail

GRANNY STICK TO THE FACTS - 2010
    27/03/2008 10:01
Colin you should go and do some research on how many countries actually made a profit from the WC. You will be shocked! The world cup is just going to show the rest of the world how incompetent we really are. I do feel sorry for the suckers who are working hard to make it work. - boerkie

      ........
    27/03/2008 10:18
I give Alicia the heads up, though I must confess, I sometimes cannot farthom the logic in her comments. Some of her comments portray her to be ignorant of basic current affairs. I most of the time think she post comments just for the sake of it. - CB

      Sigh...colin
    27/03/2008 10:21
Colin did you even read what Alicia said? She did not at all criticize the 2010 committee. All she said was that having the tournament here is a bad idea simply because the money being used for it could be better spent elsewhere.Furthermore, history has shown in other countries that massive sports stadiums always end up becoming white elephants and financial black holes after the event they were built for.Read before you speak in future. - Richard
