Because I am black...
25/04/2008 10:30  - (SA)

Ndumiso Khoza, News24 User

I am a black man.

This is the label that has been given to me due to the colour of my skin and my appearance. It is who I am seen as in the eyes of society. The colour of my skin has certainly defined who I am and clearly put me in my place.

Because I am black as opposed to white, there will be those who will, without even bothering to find out who I really am, swathe this label across my face. To some I will be classed as barbaric and uncivilised. To others I might just be regarded as uneducated and possibly a criminal.

You see, we all know by now that black people can't read, and all of them are out to find the easy way out. As a result of my appearance I am branded and classed as one who might be envious or sometimes even racist to those who are of a "lighter" colour. Like "most" people I will be judged as not willing to work hard and might even benefit from AA or BEE as I was born "deprived" and "previously disadvantaged".

If I happen to drive an "expensive" car that I bought with the sweat of my labour, others will automatically assume that I have drowned myself in debt. If I do happen to do well at work due to my diligence and dedication, others might also blame this on the colour of my skin.

Selling out

To my fellow "black" brothers and sisters, I might be called a "coconut" or even a sell-out when I criticise certain things our government has made or when I say things like "although I believe and understand the struggle, moving away from it is the one thing that will help us come closer to finding a new solution instead of rehashing the past".

It might even be considered that I regard myself too highly and have lost touch with what it means to be "black". These are all the things I have to deal with merely because I happened to be born to parents who are regarded to be of an "inferior" race. They are what I am seen to be and therefore who I am supposed to be.

Why do I have to be reduced to being a mere colour? Have I done anything so atrocious that others would not even want to glance in my direction, would choose to look the other way, or even lock their doors when they see me in traffic? Is this what I have to resign myself to face forever? Is this what I have to believe and instil in my children as well?

I love my life and I love who I am as a person. I also do love being black, because it has afforded me the opportunity to see and experience things I would have otherwise taken for granted. But I will not for one second think being black is who I am.

Plain and simple

Who I am goes beyond my outer body appearance. Who I am could never be explained in such plain and simple terms. I am a human being and a son of this earth like all other beings I happen to share this time and space with. I therefore feel that it is high time I was seen and treated as being more than just "black".

Highlighting how different I am to another cannot be a definition of who I am. I know it might be unrealistic or even premature to expect this, but I would sure love to see all of us see and treat each other as equals.

Not putting unnecessary tags and prejudices based on stereotypes and generalisations. Not treating me differently purely because you might see me as different in some way.

This is not another "racial" article, only a statement of who I am, and have been perceived to be. But I am tired of these black and white labels. Yes they exist, but merely as words to me. Just treat me like your equal and with the respect that I deserve. Is that so much to ask for?

  WHO CARES
25/04/2008 10:40
It does not matter what colour yor skin is if you bleed it is red we all havethe same body parts lets stop this colour thing and work together and then this country will prosper. We are all part of the human race the only diffrence skin colour makes is to determin what climate your ancestors came from light complexions from cooler climates and dark complexions from hotter climates - Peter@CT

  Well said Ndumiso!
25/04/2008 10:40
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! - Peter Neill

  Nice
25/04/2008 10:41
Nice piece. I like it! - Shapa

  Changing perceptions; changing views
25/04/2008 10:42
Well said, Ndumiso. The same can be said for many people's perceptions when you are white and Afrikaans speaking. But we can change perceptions, one day at a time; one person at a time. - Leonie

  ok good article..
25/04/2008 10:42
..but its friday and next week is a two day work week! why are allowing ourselves to get ruffled over this whole race issue (i know you said its not a racial article but who are you kidding)again? Lets buy a six pack and agree to disagree - aa

  Because I am White
25/04/2008 10:42
Ndumiso for president. Well written. - Mark

  Brilliant
25/04/2008 10:43
Agreed, wonderful article! - Lou

Yes, that's too much to sk for Ndumiso.
25/04/2008 10:45
As people, we have always found means and ways to discriminate against other, it's not alwys about race. It goes down to tribe, clan, sex, language etc. Look at Muslims killing each other, look at Christians killing each other, how about political beliefs. It;s my opinion that God has lost faith in human kind and maybe regrets even creating us. Maybe he regrets that he gave us the power to think beyond imagination. - Libembe

  Well said
25/04/2008 10:46
I agree with you. Unfortunately, our government insists on classifying all of us according to our race when it comes to almost all facets of life. This makes it a little difficult to see past colour, innit? I believe we are all equal until we prove otherwise. So make sure who you are is reflected in your actions, and you will receive your just desserts - no matter what colour you are. But if you're looking for work, better off that you're black - just the way it is. - MarcD

  wow
25/04/2008 10:46
Best article yet. This is the future, when "the rainbow nation" becomes colourless. Im copying this to my hard drive ;-) - mallencolly

  Because I am....
25/04/2008 10:47
a fellow human being, I will treat you as my equal and respect you for who you are. Great letter, Ndumiso, and hopefully most of the commentators will accept the integrity with which it was written and not resort to personal attacks on you. - Dave Robbins

  black
25/04/2008 10:48
Ndumiso, i have enjoyed this article, also the spirit that you wrote it in. I agree with you and believe that the other side of the coin is also applicable, don't just see me as a white man, but a fellow human being and colleague with equal opportunities and the world will be a better place. - jaco van rensburg

  Can i ask you?
25/04/2008 10:49
Why do Blacks and Whites get on living together in other parts of the world without hating one another but have failed dismally in South Africa, calling one another names and blaming one another for Apartheid/BEE and AA. When will this stop? - nmn

  Excellent
25/04/2008 10:49
Well said Ndumiso. People like you are our future! - Deon Coetzee

  Sorry, but you're wrong
25/04/2008 10:49
You clearly have an enormous chip on your shoulder. People who don't know you, dont care. People who walk past you in a mall, dont care. People who drive by you... JUST DONT CARE. The only one here, who cares about the colour of your skin in the above-mentioned situations, seems to be yourself. - AvgJoe

  Black or White
25/04/2008 10:50
My dear black brother, respect can not be demanded. One commands respect. - Mamoelatelo

  Agreed
25/04/2008 10:51
Ndumiso is agree with you. Same can be said if you are white. It will take time for us to understand each other in this country. We have reason to distrust each other, and only a lot of patience will change that. God is working in this country though, changing our hearts. All we need to do is keep on praying for each other and ourselves. - Hennie

  AWESOME!
25/04/2008 10:52
well done fellow human being, i just wish more people (pick any colour) would start thinking like you do, we could get this country to be the strongest in the world if we all come together with this type of thinking, well done dude, keep it up and spread the love :) - CJ

  not so sure
25/04/2008 10:52
People don't have difficulty getting along with other people just because of the colour of their skin. There are many other differences that can cause people to not get along. Most of the time it's people's point of view on certain issues. Some people try to look forward and build a future while other continue to blame the past. Some people take responsibility for their actions while others can't. Some people believe their government is a failure while others blindly believe. Is this racist? - anon

  Well Said.
25/04/2008 10:53
I believe you have touched on a point that needs to be taken into consideration by all the comment makers on this forum. ?Because I am white? I am often labeled similarly as you by the ?other? side. There are black and white people still out there with ?superior? attitudes but you cannot base an entire racial class on that. There are a lot of humans out there that want to make this country work, note the use of the word human! Nice article Ndumiso. - GPNick

  well defined
25/04/2008 10:53
Ndumiso I would like to thank you for a well written and thought provoking column because it defines exactly what most of us Africans are going through even though to some people this will be perceived as one of racail attack. - mondli

25/04/2008 10:54
Great article! I look forward to a time when all South Africans can be brothers and sisters and not defined by our skin colour! - Fellow South African

  BLACK
25/04/2008 10:55
I for one think you are an excellent person, with the emphasis on the word "person". If we all had your outlook, the inhabitants of SA would have mutual positive focus and we would not be continuing the struggle as we appear to be. Well done, a stunning article. - Shaz

  Unfortunately It Is
25/04/2008 10:56
Unless we have been educated that way. We have been shaped that way. And yes, too many black men are raping our sisters. It does too much harm to racial intergration. I suppose we could change it though. I had an interesting one last evening. I made a complete hash of a turning manouvre in my car. The man most effected was black. When I had corrected, and drove past him, he had this huge smile and thumbs up for me. I packed up laughing. Things can change, I am sure. - niels

  Black/White
25/04/2008 10:57
Thank you for your honesty. To me you are just another human being, "'n mens", same as myself. Therefore I, because I respect myself, will treat you as my equal and with the respect you deserve. By the way, some will call me a white man. - Jakes

  Ndumiso...
25/04/2008 10:57
Until you prove otherwise, you are my equal. And that goes for everyone. I too didn't ask to be born the colour I am, nor did I ask to be labelled a racist because I happen to be white. We really do need to get rid of the labels and start seeing eachother for what each of us are as individuals. - TedHaller

  AA/BEE
25/04/2008 10:58
Take away things like AA and BEE, and this stereotyping becomes easier to get rid of. At the moment, because of AA and BEE, people who benefit from this will always be looked upon as not really qualified for the job, but appointment made because of AA/BEE. - True Blue SA

  Excellent.
25/04/2008 10:58
Well written. - White Afrikaans woman

  Brilliant letter
25/04/2008 10:58
I agree with you. Respect should be given regardless. Respect should only be lost not withheld. - Doorboot

  @nmn
25/04/2008 10:59
You are asking why only SA has a problem with colour and not the rest of the world? I traveled a lot and stayed 4 years in Europe. I can promise you there are everywhere racial problems. Not always about the colour of another person but also because of religion. Don?t think the grass on the other side is always greener. - EB

  The human race
25/04/2008 10:59
In an ideal world, people realise that WE all are the same species of animal. Our colour relates to our natural surroundings before there were ships and planes. All humans are the same. But we are not living in an ideal world, reality is that it will take a long time or forever for some ignorrant people out there who judge on you on your skin colour, to understand that we are all equal in the eyes of the animal kingdom. - nWo

  Cheers to Ndumiso!
25/04/2008 10:59
i'll have a beer on you this evening. If only we all behaved like you. Lead by example and this is one very good example for us all to inspire to. - John Camp

  Well Done
25/04/2008 11:00
Dear Ndumiso I want to congratulate you and if South Africa could have more open minded people like you that would be a huge leap forward for the country. That skin colour does not define the person and that skin colour not be used as an excuse for any and every thing. This country would be better place if more "blacks" and ?whites? and have the same attitude. - TFM

  Well Done
25/04/2008 11:01
The only thing that can possible fix this country is non-racialism. I am also tired of everything being black and white. - David

  Sanity
25/04/2008 11:01
Finally sanity prevails! Maybe, jus maybe, SA will be a place worth fighting for if more people have this attitude, black and white. - Metallica Man

  Nice Article
25/04/2008 11:01
Well written article. In my company,we do not see colour,we are all workmates. It is so sad to see some articles of bitterness written here.We are a model of how society should be.Judge us on skills, not colour, and suddenly the plank falls out your eye.And yes,I work for an ANC controlled company, and we are all a happy family. - Proud_SA

  @AvgJoe
25/04/2008 11:02
Joe, how can you as a white man judge how a black man feels? How can you dismiss it as merely a chip on his shoulder. Don't judge the rest of the world by your standards. Racism in this country, and specifically white to black racism, is far bigger than you and I could ever imagine it to be. - niels

  Good article
25/04/2008 11:02
I am proud to be white, I would not want to be any other race/colour. But whites are labelled "racist" by black people which is unfair because this would be the same as labelling all black people hi-jackers, rapists, murderers and theives. I'll treat you with the respect you deserve but I expect the same in return ;) - dhv

  Because I'm white
25/04/2008 11:02
Good article, please remember that when you see a white person, don't just think racist. - Nick

  True, but also not
25/04/2008 11:02
Just in stating that you dont want to be preceived as being, black , you are doing just that. Why not say, because I am a person. As far as people havineg "perceptions" that you might be a criminal etc., ask your fellow brothers why. Unfortunately, majority of violent crimes, murders and rapes are done by "blacks", they created the perception hence the generalization and mistrust. I agree this is wrong, but that's life. Good letter though. Now I just hope Tshepo and Sello read this. - Drifter

  i AM black....
25/04/2008 11:03
beyond apartheid, beyond the TRC, beyond party politics the goal is still equization and reparation of injustice.....the recognotion and respect of which beckons my pride. I AM BLACK and woman.... the past ascribed these labels on me, which unlike baldness or brown eyes, are a difference that shaped my history. be a black and proud brother....it's a morally relevant characteristic in our present day struggle. - kiki

  You are branding non-blacks unfairly
25/04/2008 11:05
Ndumiso, its obvious u r suffering from an inferiority complex. I'm a so called "Indian".I work in a large company where i have colleagues of every colour. When i was in varsity it was fully integrated so i had students of all colours in my class.Doing the same courses & working alongside these people, I can see that people r just that, human. There r lazy whites, overachieving blacks, teetotalling coloureds & Indians who dont look for discounts.I see ppl 4 who they r! - sonali

  Removing Labels
25/04/2008 11:05
Thanks Ndumiso. The day when South Africa remove labels, is the day that we start to move forward. - Stephan

  Great Article
25/04/2008 11:05
When I walk in malls I see kids of all colours hanging out together, it gives me hope for the future. Hopefully our generation will not poison them with our bagage. - Rian

I AM A HUMAN BEING NOT BLACK
25/04/2008 11:06
"...I am tired of these black and white labels. Yes they exist, but merely as words to me. Just treat me like your equal and with the respect that I deserve. Is that so much to ask for?" it high time that we stop putting tags on HUMAN BEING because we are just that HUMAN BEINGS, MALE AND FEMALES.i Dont understand why person sees colour before gender, sad !!!!!!!!! - Bokamoso

  Goog going!
25/04/2008 11:06
Good going Ndumiso! Great article, I agree with your views and as mentioned by others above that the flipside of the coin is also true (as I am white and afrikaans). Marnoelatelo I completely disagree with you. Respect is EARNED. - Whatever Marnoelatelo

  Agree.
25/04/2008 11:07
I agree, lets start standing together and get rid of the criminals out there (White and Black). Its them ruining this great country of ours. Its because of them that we are sitting with a skill shortage in South Africa. - TS

  Agree with you 100%
25/04/2008 11:11
Well said Ndumiso, South Africans needs to move on irrespective of colour. - Newkid

  Give it time
25/04/2008 11:12
Racial prejudice will be diluted with every new generation to come. There is unfortunately no instant solution to clean the system, we have to give it time. Trying to force it will only cause more damage and delay the process. - Viso

  Get over it!!
25/04/2008 11:13
I agree with AvgJoe, stop obssesing about these things, just get on with it, people in this country live in fear for their possessions, their lives and their childrens safety, I, as a mother would look at anybody suspiciously walking in between the traffic or loitering in my road, it doesn't matter what colour they are, it's the sign of the times we live in that people act defensively, or in fear of, it's because you can't trust anyone, even your own uncle might rape you-get over it man. - Debbi Greening

  Thank You !
25/04/2008 11:13
Thank you Ndumiso, the best piece of writing I have seen here for a long time. I am white, but only on the label of the tin. If everyone is SA could think like you what an amazing nation we could build... - Mike

  You will be called black
25/04/2008 11:15
everywhere you go, in Eastern europe and Spain when they see you they'll make monkey sounds. In SA they will call you kaffir under their breath. It shouldn't bother you, it doesnt bother me at all. I welcome all insults. Nice article Ndumiso. - tshepo

  @nmn
25/04/2008 11:15
The blacks and whites in America have basically the same culture, so they have a common ground to counter racism - in this country our only common ground is the fact that we are South Africans; our cultures cause misunderstandings, as everyone seems to feel that the other person should know yours and its taboo's; that's not the case, we don't, and some of us do not want to know, both black and white, and thats part of the problem - which is overlooked whenever any black/white issue arrises. - carel

  Black or White?
25/04/2008 11:16
We, the ordinary folk who live in this country regard ourselves as South Africans, its the government that insists that we classify ourselves otherwise for their own agenda! - South African

  Well put
25/04/2008 11:17
I like that attitude dude! - Suspect101

  Ndumiso
25/04/2008 11:18
Thank you for a great article! I agree with you 100%. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone thought the same as you? We are classified by race, but it's like that everywhere. Naturally we will see black, white, indian etc. but instead of generalising, we need to remember, there's a person behind the colour and not just the colour. - Estelle

  suprised
25/04/2008 11:19
I just want to confess that I am very much suprised and touched by comments from my fellow white South Africans, you guys will never cease to suprise a person because I thought you were going attack as you did on the previous article, to me this are signs of growing up please keep it up. - mondli

Hope I can hear these type of words from the ANC leadership
25/04/2008 11:20
Well written and as a white afrikaans male I can Identify with what you say. Cultures dont need to change but people should respect all created by God. - Sam

  Thank you Ndumiso!
25/04/2008 11:22
Thank you for sharing your experience with us, and being clear in explaining to me what it's like being you in our society. I feel I've gained a lot of understanding now, and although your feelings may be unique to yourself, I am sure many others feel the same way. Good on you, and I wish I could buy you a cup of coffee/mug of beer and share a chat and a laugh. - Jaco

  At first.....
25/04/2008 11:24
.... I started reading and thought 'another racist article'. But reading on it's clear that Ndumiso feels like many of us whites do... why the labels? Drop it all guys! Drop the chips on shoulders, drop the attitudes, drop the complexes and just live and let live! - Gary

  Well done
25/04/2008 11:26
Your article has lifted my mood today. So, Im leaving and wont read anymore just incase certain people come along with their silly comments and ruin my good mood. Good artcle, well done ;) - deb

  Ndumiso
25/04/2008 11:27
Just keep doing what you doing, you are doing something right to be willing to write a letter such as this. I wish you a wonderful successful life. I know a lot of people just like you so we can get to a colourless world, not sure when but we must just keep working at it. - Irene CT

  Ag shame
25/04/2008 11:28
Tshepo read his post, maybe you will learn from it and realise what Ndumiso Khoza is a way to stop feeling sorry for the colour of your skin and be the person you are inside. Ndumiso Khoza brilliantly put, i hope there are more ppl like you out there,no matter what colour their skin is, - Tobie

  Racial problems everywhere!!
25/04/2008 11:28
I have experienced racial profiling everywhere I have travelled, right from SA airports to London and Warsaw. On a stopover in London from Mexico, a security officer pulled me over and proceeded to throughly search my hand laggage. And he pretended that it was a random search. How random can it be when you are the only black passenger and the only subjected to such humiliation?? - Wiri

  Its not just black/white
25/04/2008 11:28
Great article. If only we could all think like this but unfortunately it is human nature not to. Respect is not a right but is earned and that goes for all races, colours and creeds. - envirokid

  Aaaah pleez man.....
25/04/2008 11:28
"But I am tired of these black and white labels." So you are tired of it are you? Well when I was in SA I got just as tired of it every time that I was told by prospective employers that they couldn't employ me because I am White and that's why I left. As I understand it, nothing has changed. If you want respect, you have to earn it but if you are a supporter of the government and its AA policies then don't expect me to respect you. Ever. - Cynical

  You have my respect
25/04/2008 11:33
Nice piece, Ndumiso. As (hopefully) a reasonablly human being, I feel for you and the others just like you. The greatest injustice is for an individual to tainted because of the conduct of other people who are outwardly similar. Unfortunately for our beloved country and for society, you are perceived by many, to be one in a million. In a perfect world we would all be judged as individuals not by race or colour, but as we know, this is no perfect world. May your qualities be contagious. - Sean

  @Mamoelatelo
25/04/2008 11:34
respect is earned nothing else... - mp3's mentor

  Good Friday
25/04/2008 11:35
Good Friday piece! I'll let this (and all the positive responses) guide my weekend. Amazing: usually so many negative responses, suddenly everybody loves each other. Wha'happened? Don't mind, let's just carry on with the good stuff... - Lizard

  wow
25/04/2008 11:35
U my friend will go far in life. I want to say to al black people that call people like you a coconut to stop envying any 1 who is making a success of their lives. Take your future its yours there is no reason why you can not have a full, successfull life like this young man! - chris

  Thanks
25/04/2008 11:35
I enjoyed your letter and hope it hits home with a few people. - stack

  Colour is not the problem
25/04/2008 11:38
Rather than status we assign to each colour. If we see black people as inferior instead of simply black, then that is what create the problems we have. There is absolutely nothing wronf with colour. However, when we are lazy, we often assign attributes of one person across a group. - LvH

  Great Article!!!
25/04/2008 11:39
Soren Kierkegaard famous quote is what I live by - "Once you label me, you negate me." Needless to say I have friends from across SA social spectrum. If all SAFA's thought like that, I have no doubt it would be better place to live. To all SAFA's - Zulu's, Sotho's, Tswana's, Venda's, Xhosa's, Afrikaner's, "Souties", Swazi's, Coloured's, Indian's, Chinese and all the other groups out there I say be proud of your heritage, but realise that you are much much more than that! - Woody

dont fool yourself. At school you were taught a ruler is not a pen. You have also been taught Black is not White. And yes you were also taught that Jesus was white. What if the pen was really a ruler, and Black was indeed White and Jesus did not exist would any of this matter. The beauty part of life is that in death we dont know what becomes of us. Is it really a long form of sleep? Why all this hatred towards Blacks. - nmn

  South African
25/04/2008 11:40
Am I to assume that prior to the government we have, there was no difference between South Africans? If I remember well, we even had europeans or whites only areas whereas the word African was reserved for the "savages and natives" - Len van Heerden

  Excellent Article

Brilliant article and well said. It basically boils down to the old saying which says don't judge a book by it's cover. It is so true. - JB

  Comparisons and Balance of Justice
25/04/2008 11:41
As long as we carry on (in our thoughts that is) making comparisons of whatever subject we happen to focus on, so long will we have the balance of justice (you are wrong/right or I am black/white or ....) on our side of the equation - I am the most important person is this world (in my thoughts that is) and the "scale of justice" by virtue of the norm that one applies in the comparison will only move towards "BALANCE" when we start (thinking) with ourselves and add to it huge doses of forgivenes - AP. Olivier

  Eyes of the child,
25/04/2008 11:43
it is about time that we see the world through the eyes of the child, because a child doest see colour only sees a friends, it is just us adults who sees things things and behind close doors instil this to their kids.we will move forward if we see people beyond colour, sex, religion ect - Bokamoso

  @tobie, i read his article
25/04/2008 11:43
and agree with Ndumiso. Im just pointing the reality of the situation. It will still happen whether we like it or not. Don't be defensive nobody's accusing you of anything. - tshepo

  Perfect
25/04/2008 11:45
Seriously, I don't think I've ever enjoyed reading a post this much. Fantastic. Pity about the naysayers. Maybe its time for us to admit that if someone needs an article with such clarity explained to them, they will simply never understand. I salute you. - ian

Beg to seriously differ with you. African Americans and white Americans are no where close to having one culture. There might be commonality in religion and national identification, since African Americans identify themselves as American first and foremost. They are not planning to move to Africa. common identity is key, but hard to attain until we see us as South Africans first and foremost - Len van Heerden

Sir, your article is very romantic and naive. Many of ?us? (Madiba children) had the same wish that we should be treated as ?equal human beings?? and be awarded the respect that we surely deserve. When one reads the comments section on this forum, one is confronted with an explicit reality that ?we? are still at war. The hatred and contempt directed at the Nubian race is displayed for all to see. ALUTA CONTINUA! - PBR

Why did you think it was another racist article? Surely, there must have been a motivating factor - LvH

  Who cares?
25/04/2008 11:49
I don't understand all this time that is spent on racial pride. I am no more proud of being white than I am of having 2 eyes or 10 fingers. Its just a thing I was born with and had no choice in. - Cynick

come on, you are not special, if u decided to actually look around u,or even leave the airport, u will be surprised to see that in all major transport terminals people are searched, and not because of their colour, but because of the terrorist attack that happened there.Cynical, u dont have to agree with a persons point of view to respect him as a person, but i suppose thats where the problems from south africa come from, someone needs to please you in order for u to see him as a human being...shame. - nWo

25/04/2008 11:50
I am white and I don't think you are stupid. A great article. You see, us white people get exposed to the bad - the rape, murder, hijacking, burglary on a regular basis. You seem to loose track of the bigger picture, but believe me, we know there are a lot of black people that are hardworking, intelligent and honest. - Sonja

  Thank you
25/04/2008 11:51
People are just people; criminals are just that - whether black, white, pink. There are white rapists, and there are black rapists, there are white fraudsters and black fraudsters, white racists and black racists. And there's you, Ndumiso, and me, and Rian, Metallica Man, Tshepo and John Camp: people who just want to live their lives in this beautiful country. And it's us who make the difference - imagine, such wonderful responses to an ordinary person. There's more of us out there! - Meme

i really think this kind of debate will become more and more meaningless as we fight for our very survival. stop, look around things are coming to ahead on a daily basis. how much more are you prepared to compromise in order to get through a day - Luke

25/04/2008 11:54
And isn't it funny that we whities lie in the sun for friggen hours to be more "brown" and 'brownies" stay out of the sun to be more pale. Strange world we live in indeed. - TB

  100% correct
25/04/2008 11:54
You are 100% correct. But the problem started with the movement of people from their original god given places to orther people's teritories ,from this the devil invested his ideas on the beutifull people of this world. It is my first time to see all the good and bad South Africans agreeing on something in this column may our resting fathers fly yoou their strength. - Sankore Tafari

It does not matter the colour of your skin, what matters is the confidence that radiates from that individual. We all have the same goals and motivation. It is our stubborness and ego that stops our true potential. Colour is an excuse to reflect our innner most fears - Damon

25/04/2008 11:59

Great article. I dislike being branded a racist because I am a white Afrikaner as much as you dislike being assumed to be a tsotsi because you are a black African. We'll be blessed one day when far more people can think the way you propose in this article - I hope that day comes soon. You can become racial policy advisor to the ANC and the DP and make a huge bucket of money! - Tuffy

good article - you write so well for a blackman. hehehe jokes
25/04/2008 12:06
I have been in the UK for almost a year now and I know I am not ignorant in saying that skin colour does not play major role in society as it does in South Africa. I know I should not compare a 1st world country to a 3rd but that is the only experience I have had. Looking for a job, building a career, making friends, getting a girlfriend is all based in what comes out of your mouth and not what the color of your skin is. It will be very difficult to go back to South Africa and "blend" in again because of what my expectations will be. - Job Maelane

  Equality when it suits
25/04/2008 12:09
Ndumiso, be careful of embracing and praising racism when you are the beneficiary of it (ie. bee and affirmative action) BUT speaking against racism when you are the victim of it (ie. apartheid). If you truly reject racism, then you must do so whole-heartedly and not just when it suits your race group. - Puhleez

  What a pipe dream!
25/04/2008 12:11
I'm not surprised that many white folks think this was a good article. Yes, we should be colourblind...they say. Why now? The fact of the matter is we are what we are! Black, white, Sotho, Tsonga etc. This is who we are and we sometimes suffer for the same simple reason. Now let's stop dreaming and come back to earth where there are Blacks, whites, indians etc. - Motho

  Next steps...
25/04/2008 12:11
It is clear then that the next step in the evolution of the previously disadvantaged would be the abolishment of racial policies which they have come to rely on. I see we agree then that only then will the labels be removed and the previously disadvantaged can stand with their heads held high and say "I did this rather than as is now the case where all that they can claim is "I did this becasue they are not allowed to." - Singularity

Do you have a "PROUD TO BE BLACK" bumper sticker on your fancy new car? ;) - Sizwe

  Ditto...
25/04/2008 12:14
Because I am white as opposed to black, there will be those who will, without even bothering to find out who I really am, swathe this label across my face. To some I will be classed as racist and xenophobic. To others I might just be regarded as self-important and possibly a member of the AWB. Point is, you are right, it is human nature to generalize, especially when it comes to people of other races. We ALL do it, no more or less than the other. Also, sometimes people just don't give a hoot. - whitey

Nice Article man. Many people have perceptions about others man. Nigerians, Zulus and Afrikaaners are the worst stereotyped according to me. Bu I have to commend you on a nicely written article. No negativities, that's the ways man. Enjoy the long weekend. - Taetjo Makutu Mathabatha

  We feel for you
25/04/2008 12:16
Thanks for a great article. I think you also understand bits of the "Afrikaner" now. When a "Afrikaner" is involved in any act against a black person, its immediately earmarked as a racial incident. People march to the court with racial slogans. When a black person kill an "Afrikaner" its a farm attack or a hi-jacking the gone wrong for the press - no race mentioned. With almost 2000 farm killing the last 10 years, the Minister of Security is not even prepared to meet with AgriSA. - Heinrich

I am racist. This sucks too! I have to proove over and over that I'm not, even other (but racist) afrikaans speaking people assume that i share there views - wish people would assume that I'm not, until my actions or words prove otherwise.   BE BIG
25/04/2008 12:19
For every attack, verbal or physical that we read of, there are a thousand acts of kindness that happen. Unfortunately the group of black men who help a white lady push her car or the white man who buys a pair of shoes for a black beggar dont make the news. But I guarantee this - ever day it happens. Life is too sacred to waste on beliefs that dont serve. The never-ending circle of he did this/she did that so I'm going to get them back cannot sustain life. Open yourself to magic. - Dean
