  • Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki's government has approved the disbanding of an elite South African crime-fighting unit, bowing to pressure from supporters of rival Jacob Zuma who accused it of political abuse.

Mbeki's cabinet adopted two bills last week paving the way for the end of the Directorate of Special Operations, commonly known as the Scorpions, and the creation of a new unit within the police, South Africa's Sunday Times reported.

The FBI-style unit had been living on borrowed time since Zuma beat Mbeki for the leadership of the ruling African National Congress in December. Zuma's camp accused the Scorpions of engaging in a plot to smear and deny Zuma the ANC top job.

Meanwhile, the Khampepe commission report on the future of the Scorpions is expected to be made public on Monday. All indications are that the report favoured retaining the Scorpions in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Do you think this is the end for the Scorpions? Do you think there could still be some surprises from Parliament on this issue? Are you anticipating the release of the Khampepe commission as a turning point?

      SCREW the ANC on this
    05/05/2008 11:22
MERELY implemented to prevent their corrupt brothers from going to jail. I remember when it was announced in Parliament, that the Scorpions would be disbanded. The cheering that followed. Seriously, merely the ruling party, preventing its shady deals from coming to light, ever again. "Who will guard the guardian?" - Sinudeity

      scorpions
    05/05/2008 11:26
Who ever is involved with the disdanding of the Scorpions, for-sure has something to hide... Please wake up... - liz

      Not surprised..
    05/05/2008 11:29
anymore. Our last remaining weapon in fighting crime will disappear for good. I read the Sunday Times article in which one of our senior ministers stated that Scorpions were no longer required as crime levels had "dropped". And these are our future leaders??? Disgraceful! - John Camp

      PROOF!
    05/05/2008 11:33
Disbanding the scorpions is SURELY the proof that the anc is NOT serious about fighting crime! Why people are stupid enough to vote for them, is mind-boggling! - Juan

      The one...................
    05/05/2008 11:41
good thing that withstood the test of time for 13 years, has come to its end. The Khampepe Com report will have no effect on the disbanding of the Scorpions by Thabo & Comp. However, I do believe, what comes around, goes around, and this country will not be governed in this fashion forever. - Annie

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 11:46
After the Scorpions are gone our politicians will be free to plunder to their hearts content. Of course they will be disbanded. - frank

Scorpions disbanded to stop them from finding where Arms Deal bribes went
    05/05/2008 11:49
Top down this govt is evil. What do they hide? I would love to know how much each member of the cabinet, from Mugabe's side-kick Thabo down, has stolen from the people. They disband the scorpions, muzzle the media with a tribunal, bury Oilgate, Armsgate, Travel Gate etc.. They must think we are all fools. Are they right? What have we not heard about? They sold the SFF oil. They sold ESKOM coal. Where is the money? With neglect they blow up more substations after 1994 than they could before! - Alan

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 11:57
Can someone please tell me where to board the gravy train, with the removal of the Scorpions! I want to feel how to live in a R 15 000 000 house with a salary of R 15 000.00. Crime pays, and if not, just remove the obstacle (Scorpions),then make it pays. - Hennie Thompson

      THIS IS DISGUSTING
    05/05/2008 12:00
The socalled our leaders are a bunch of thugs. They know the existance of Scorpions will hurt them dearly. I don't see any hope of saving this crime fighting unit. they are going to do away with this at all costs even if it means laying their fat necks on the block. - MJOMANA

      Flop
    05/05/2008 12:00
Another F&*% up of the ANC led government. No wonder people are leaving this country in droves because of the crime. Funny how the masses oppose this and yet the elite parliament what it. Please can anyone of those ANC members out there explain this logic to me so I can understand the corrupt leaders, because thats who they are and this is who you voted for. If you defend them, shit you should be in parliament too. - Win

      Animal Farm...
    05/05/2008 12:01
I do think this is the end of the Scorpions. The ANC are determined and there is nothing that is going to stop them. They have proved in the past that they don't have respect for the laws of this country. No amount of debate or court action will stop them, remember these are people who think the laws are not made for them but other people,if you have read the book Animal Farm by George Orwell you will understand. - Godfrey

      Useless
    05/05/2008 12:02
Now the corrupt Government can get away with everything without anyone finding out about it. disgusting!!! - Shaun

      Oh well
    05/05/2008 12:03
We all knew it was comming - just a matter of time. What it actually means is that JZ will be president of South Africa, and the only thing we can hope for is that he will do a good job. Nothing we can do just sit back and watch and try enjoy the show!! - wb

      referendum on scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:03
if the scorpions are here to defend the public, why do we have no say in whether the should stay or go.how about we start protesting damn it!!! we all just sit back and complain. how about we all marck this saturday in all the city squares this sunday and make ourselves herd!! - nick

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:06
It does'nt matter what we say isn't, whatever you say the government will go ahead and implement anyway. After all those calling for scorpions to be banned are trying to save thier skins. What you will notice is that , the more things will change the more they will stay the same. It really does'nt matter which elite police unit we bring people will always be corrupt and what are we going to do....scrap it and bring a new one. Our counrty is getting poopere and poorer because of all these changes. - Thokozani

      Scorpions...bye...Crime...hello
    05/05/2008 12:06
Please prove me wrong! The Scorpions or the DSO are going to be incorporated into SAPS thereby making them a stronger crime fighting unit, or so says our government. Perhaps it is to keep a better eye on them and make sure the cronies are not targeted. But hey prove me wrong, I would love that! - Metallica Man

      Untoucheable.
    05/05/2008 12:06
The Scorpions have proved to be the true High profile crime busters. Their sin is that they stepped the on toes of the "untoucheables". - Nkhesani Maluleke

Is the only ones who wnats the scorpions gone !! Its no riddle why but for the masses , let me tell you , cos they steal my tax money and your promised house, water, electricuty, eduction and what ells they can get their hands on!!!WAKE UP - bongani

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:09
I love the ANC but if they keep on going like this they must just forget my vote and everyone else i can influence, their corruption is getting to my nerves now - morena

      Scorpions are dead,
    05/05/2008 12:11
end of story. The ANC will never allow them to survive. - tshepo

One serious bad move by the ANC.
    05/05/2008 12:14
The scorpions might have behaved like Hollywood idiots but that does not warrant the end of a successful crime fighting machine specialisng in complex cases and organised crime. we are sure to loose those skills to overseas countries and private sector. We should have worked on the shortcommings of the unit and not personalise its work. Good majority needs the scorpions to stay even our arrogant president and moral and ethical South Africans - Libembe

      ANC scared of Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:16
Obviously the ANC are very afraid of the Scorpions. IF the Scorpions were allowed to carry on, then most of the ANC leaders would be in court or in jail. The ANC is a joke and they are laughing at all the stupid people voting for them at each election ;) - dhv

      crush a scorpion!
    05/05/2008 12:19
The government accuses the Scorpions of being racist - but wasn't it the government that set up the Scorpions in the first place? It seems sad that a government that started with such high ideals has become so inextricably mired in corruption and incompetence that it feels the need to disband one of its more conspicuous successes! - jeremy

ANC no better than previous government
    05/05/2008 12:22
the ANC have alot to hide ;) - helen

      Zim here we come!!!
    05/05/2008 12:22
Its funny how most of the people in parliment( that was found guilty and inadequetly punished for the travelgate scandal)also voted for the scorpions to be disbanded. This elite crime fighting unit's days are numbered because of criminals having power.Soon they will run the courts in the country because of affirmative action. As we move closer to a one party state things will just get worse.Zim here we come!!!! - shane

      run
    05/05/2008 12:28
Then trully this will be a country for the criminal, run by the criminal. - padkos

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:28
The previous regime was a disaster, this current govt is a even bigger disaster. People, stop voting, you are wasting your time, one crook replaces the other. Yengeni is out and about enjoying life, Mcbribe is doing well, eh eh eh - bablaas botha

      scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:31
There is a saying in Afrikaans which reads "'n Benoude kat maak benoude spronge." In essence it means that people in panic act irrationally. The decision to disband the Scorpions is irrational to the extreme. The obsession to stop the organisation, as expressed by Mr Mantashe and Mthethwa, is not only factually incorrect and deliberately misleading, it demonstrates that there is panic that an independent investigation unit would uncover crime committed by certain ANC members. - Will

And yet the masses will vote....
    05/05/2008 12:33
...once again for the ANC. We see daily that people (not the whites) are upset about promises not being kept, and yet the still vote ANC. I can understand that they will never vote for a white party, but last time I checked, there were a couple of other "black" parties. The people of SA can not complain anymore. We are bringing it over ourselves! - Lithium

      scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:33
Amusing if it wasn't so tragic how we can rant and rave all we like on this forum and nobody in power, frankly, will give a damn. - taurus

Why do we all stand by and watch doing nothing?
    05/05/2008 12:34
"All that is needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing." It breaks my heart that a nation of 40 million plus just stand by and watch 20 or 30 corrupt self interest politicians close down one of the main pillars of our crime fighting capability! Where is the public outcry? Why arent the opposition organising marches? Why are we out in the streets? Why isnt it ongoing headline news, at best it makes page 4 or so! - Alan

      WOW
    05/05/2008 12:41
Well we might as well legalize fraud, corruption, money laundering etc co's no-one is going to get charged for these crimes any more. No wait...the ANC have alot of ppl they would like to put away, like law abiding people trying to improve this country for all. Since they control the police and therefore what ever they create in place of the scorpions, they will use them to get 'rid of' any one who doesn't 100% agree with ANC's selfish desires. - Kiefie

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:45
Please wake-up, S.A is rampant with murders, rapes, armed robberies, break-ins and everything. Where are these scorpions? All they are doing is targeting high profile individuals in a hollywood style manner. What we need are cops that will make me the man in there street feel safe. Fraud is a crime but its not a priority to me, rapes,murders,break-in and armed robberies are threat to my freedom. Chasing people in ivory towers its nice watching it on TV but it does not make me feel safe. - Nkuza

Proof our government is totally inept
    05/05/2008 12:48
i as a black male, will definately not vote for the ANC, the thing is its the uneducated masses that vote for them and for what reason, they still dont have houses, adequate health care, crime is rampant everyone, this is such a useless government. i am embarrased to be african :( - Sipho

      Dis/Mis..information...?
    05/05/2008 12:49
Since when has a report in the media held the monopoly on the truth? An informed discussion on the matter will indicate, that the scorpions are not that successful, that it costs lots of money to keep this " elite" afloat, that the "doinkeys" running this unit have gotten themselves into a knot about their agenda, and that they are more needed in SAPS than anywhere else. You cynically push the crime agenda, why not get the "best" to deal with it(crime) in the right context(SAPS)? - Cape Town Kid

It is the end of the Scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:51
The ANC got so much corruption and criminal members, they can never allow the Scorpions to survive. The Scorpions will open the public's eyes and that the ANC can not allow. - Truth

      scorpions
    05/05/2008 12:54
The Scorpions are the friends of the country and of the ANC, but have a passion to fight crime, even if committed by ANC members. Has the time not arrived for the ANC to rid itself from the rotten apples in their basket? What happened to the ANC of Mandela, of the upper moral high ground, of integrity? The majority respectable honourable ANC members must now stand up and be heard. - Don

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 13:00
South Africa has now become a logic free zone.Ofcourse the Scorpions will be disbanded-it is a threat to the gangsters paradise.According to Zuma the ANC will govern till Jesus comes-lets hope that will be soon. - Hans

      Not surprise
    05/05/2008 13:01
Mr Mbeki doesn't have a clue what is happening in this country. There is always no crisis. I don't think he even had a clue what he was signing when he approved the disbanding of the unit. He is indeed the Joke of the Year. - Tazz

      Scorpions
    05/05/2008 13:01
Now there will be more corruption and more people will be left hungry. As Juan said, why do people vote for these criminals? - Andre

      ANC Thugs
    05/05/2008 13:06
What other decision could be expected from the ANC thugs?? And to compound this, the dumb masses will again vote for the ANC thuggery which is called the SA Government. This country will get what is votes for - as we see today a lawless country run by a bunch of thugs!!....out only to enrich themselves. - True Blue SA

      Till God Comes...
    05/05/2008 13:07
The ANC is a fact of life in the lives of South Africans. They will be in power until God comes. Why? ask yourself that question, you intelligent howlers, with priviledged backgrounds always voting for a mickey mouse(DA) party with a minney mouse leader. heh heh heh.. - Cape Town Kid

      Let them sting as hell
    05/05/2008 13:18
if they say that the scorpions focused only on the select few in the ANC, They must stop whatever they are doing so that if focuses somewhere else,it focuses on them because they are corrupt officials. - Bokamoso

      We the public
    05/05/2008 13:21
Virtually EVERYBODY who has commented on this article, except for some fool from Cape Town, feels that disbanding the Scorpions is disgraceful. If we can be classed as the "voice" of the people then WHY isn't the ANC hearing our voice??? - John Camp

      Nkuza
    05/05/2008 13:24
You miss the point buddy, thats what the police are there to do, Scorpions specialise in high profile crimes, which triggers down to syndicates, and the to the man on the street. Feel better/safe when the do something positive, it could help all of us. - JB

      Problem is the people...
    05/05/2008 13:26
As long as the people of this country sit by idly and not challenge the government on their decisions, I am afraid the disbanding of the Scorpions will only be the beginning. When the people realise that the government is there for them and not the other way around, things can start to change 4 the better.Imagine what the reaction would have been in the U.S. if the government decided to disband the FBI while a corupt politician was being investigated by them... - nWo

      Lets Privatize the Scorpions
    05/05/2008 13:32
Private sectore always showed to me more efficient and successful. Someone with money can make a killing and do good for this country without any corrupt fingers in the pie. - JB

The ultimate betrayal of our democracy.
    05/05/2008 13:34
Democracy belongs only to the ANC Government and their brothers in crime. The Scorpions have come to close to the flame of corruption that burns brightly at government offices. Shame, shame and shame. What a rotten lot you are. I pray that in the end, what has been going on in this country since Mbeki took power comes out. What a can of worms. Also his obvious involvement with Bloody Bob. The ANC broom is back. Thank you Scorpions.... for a while there, truth nearly reigned. - Alicia

      Get rid of the Scorpions
    05/05/2008 13:37
Their success rate is questionable, did they reduce the level of crime in our country, the answer is a fat big NO. They are just a law unto themselves seeking glory at the expense of political leaders and the rich blacks. This crime unit is infested with apartheid security agents. Let them be integrated into the SAPS and maybe they will be able to solve burglaries, rape & murder. - Calvin Mkhize

      Nkuza
    05/05/2008 13:38
The ANC fraudsters investigated by the Scorpions are stealing OUR money which could be used to increase police salaries. If the police are paid better then maybe they will efficiently perform their jobs which may actually lead to a decrease in crime. - dhv

      The Scorpions' disbandment
    05/05/2008 13:39
I am not a high ranking official of the ANC, yet I support the disbandment of the DSO precisely for the same reasons, with additional points relating to the support I give to the disbandment of the DSO. One of these is that the DSO regarded itself as an extension of the Judiciary, and has been very keen to investigate all except when such people are not judges. I have details of crimes committed by judges, which details are ignored by the DSO. A case in point is the disorderly tea drinking judge. - Modisi Jo Moila

      Typical....
    05/05/2008 13:48
....that a crime-fighting unit that actually works (too well obviously) will be disbanded. They are cutting a bit too close to the bone and are obviously on the verge of a big breakthrough concerning the arms deal. Can't have them preventing our beloved JayZee becoming 'da main man' can we?? You didn't hear it here first....JayZee will go scott free as the state's case against him collapses and Shabir Shaik will remain in tjoekie....how strange?!?! - Bob

    05/05/2008 13:51
Dude, they target the leaders of the country because they are corrupt. Putting away a corrupt chief of police has a far greater impact that putting away one murderer. SA needs to be cleaned from the top down. The ANC can claim they are being targeted, but that's the way it should be at the top. If they weren't guilty it would not matter. - Rian

      Let them go
    05/05/2008 13:56
oh please, what have the scorpions really done for the public? personally, I'd like a well trained and armed SAPS that can keep our streets/homes safe - thats what we need to focus on.The scorpions have double the resources of SAPS and half the case-load so the fact that they are "successful" is not surprising.and if their "job" is to weed out corruption, why have they arrested/prosecuted only two ppl over the arms deal? We all know there were more ppl involved! - VG

      Welcome to Flight Zumbabwe!
    05/05/2008 13:56
...ah, this is your Captain speaking...there is NO crime problem in South Africa, AIDS? what is that?!, just take a shower man...uhm,and of course there is NOT a problem in Zimbabwe either, that is just a racial allegation once again, so we will not be interferring! In fact we look forward to applying similar practices over here. Sit back and try to relax whilst we destroy this beautiful Country he he he! - Whatajoke

      WE must protest!!!
    05/05/2008 13:59
AS the public, as members of the Republic, it is in OUR best interest the Scorpions STAY! Not the Govt. Stuff the Govt. WE need the protection and the peace of mind, and TRUST!!! MASS PROTEST NEEDS TO BE ORGANISED!!!! We have to all stand together! Govt cannot get away with this crap!!! It is our right to live in safety, and up to Govt to provide!! After all, we pay them for $$*! sucks!! - Grant

      Bold move
    05/05/2008 14:05
I applaud this bold move by our honourable Prez Thabo Mbeki. The Scorpions had good intentions when they were initially formed. However this unit has been hijacked by the former apartheid agents for their ulteria motives. This has been evidenced by unusual plea bargains offerd to white druglords and their kind. The brows mole report also attest to this. Now we need a new unit which will comprise of former MK commanders amongst others. - Azania

      Stupid leaders ,leading South Africa
    05/05/2008 14:08
"it was the age of wisdom,it was the age of foolishness" Mbeki has nothing to do with this, the problem lies enterly to Zuma and the others,if it means stupid Zuma and supporters are changing South Africa to worse then we have to stand up on our feet and do something.I used to love Anc at times of Mbeki and backward but now the will be a change where Anc will become smaller and smaller. Stupids like Zuma will not be accomodated and not be able to enrich themselves. - mpho

      Idiots
    05/05/2008 14:18
Well, just when you thought it can't get any more funny, well it happened.Mandela is probably going to get a heart attack of the joke this ANC fools are making of the deaths of those who struggled, what a bunch of Hypocrite. Why blame the old regime, the new one is f#CK'n up more.Weak Rand, high petrol prices, higher interest rate, high food prices, high CRime,NO work,NO scorpions,High medical costs. We all should stage a stop protest and bring the country to a complete halt till the ANC opens their books - BradPack
