The rainbow that was
05/05/2008 14:03  - (SA)

  • 'I spoke to President Mbeki'
  • 11 official, 2 successful?
  • Prophets of doom and gloom
  • Brandon Faber, News24 User

I don't know about you but, frankly, the world is really getting boring. Same old news, arguments, assumptions, accusations - yeah, whatever.

Everyone's claiming that someone is "out to get them" and everyone else is thinking about leaving sunny South Africa. Yes people, ask around, the skilled are leaving in droves and it has nothing to do with a black government - it has to do with the severity of incompetence and violence that has become the trademark of the rainbow that was.

Lord knows what happened to that pot of gold we were supposed to get at the end of it.

Anyway, while containers leave our shores for Australia, Canada and the UK, and Zim refugees stream across our borders, it's heart-warming to see that our leaders are busying themselves with the issues that really matter... Like killing off The Scorpions. Yes it's no fun when an investigative unit investigates.

What's that you say about "checks and balances"?

Aikona country folk, we don't want such an absurd practice gaining a foothold in Africa - where would we hide our mistakes then? Geez, the mere suggestion of an impartial judiciary and crime fighting units that are blind to title and/or political affiliation is like saying we should obey the laws of the road, not abuse our children and be kind to old people.

    What madness...

    Do-gooders

I don't want to live in a country where shooting wildly at each other in shopping malls is frowned upon, where reason and accountability is lacking and where companies have to be kept in check to ensure consumers are treated fairly.

Nah, give me a place where robbers maim and murder, where the masses pillage and plunder, where the rule of law only affects the powerless and where spanners are thrown into nuclear reactors.

Give me a place where I can buy degrees, licenses, tenders and a seat on the right-hand-side of men who want to lead. I want a country where you get shot for R300 and a cell phone, mugged for a cup of coffee, donnered stupid for taking someone's parking - smacked into ICU for being the wrong colour at a nightclub.

Yes people, the marching band is playing, the pigs are walking, Elvis has left the building, the fat lady is singing, the Pied Piper is doing his thing at OR Tambo and, somewhere, Bugs Bunny has just pulled a fast one over Elmer Fudd.

I will be at a pub doing tequila shots with Yosemite Sam and the outgoing do-gooders of The Scorpions if anyone's looking for me.

You should join, what else is there?

      Why they leave...
    05/05/2008 14:23
Why is it so easy for some people to leave the country and find a home elsewhere? If a kid runs away from home and goes somewhere "nicer", he'll still miss home because home is home! At the end of the day, we have Europeans and Africans. Africans will always have a home in Africa, and Europeans will always have a home in Europe. Which is why Europeans are going back home... - Athi

I'll join you at the bar...

      Circle of Friends
    05/05/2008 14:29
I must have the wrong circle of friends because none of the people I know talk of ever leaving the country. They bitch and moan about this and that, but many show concern and willingness to help. Perhaps it has more to do with the type of friends we chose, perhaps? anyway, I say, Bon Voyage to you and your friends. We do leave for different reasons and end of apartheid is still one of those for others while crime is another. Incompetence we are used to from apartheid days - LvH

Now even the brave Brandon is stresed....
    05/05/2008 14:31
Yes my very old friend brandon..I have to admit today your article sound really sad for the first time in your history..stress has finally got hold of you..soon panic will take over then maybe OR TAMBO to perth will be your last resort...Man I can only say I feel you...You see brandon when finally all of us can listen to one another then all probles will be solved..I also dont want to live in a country where the colour of your skin defines your destiny..Listen so that you can be heard yourself.. - Kolobe

      Play it again Sam
    05/05/2008 14:31
I don't need tequila after this one Brendon.I'm punch drunk already after having read your article. What the hell , pour me a double.I'm bringing my own seat just in case I get "moered" for sitting on someone elses.Hic! - psycobabble

      And on that happy note
    05/05/2008 14:31
allow me to say that I am busy packing my bags for the very reasons stated in this column. I'm taking my cats and going to look for a country that isn't as corrupt as ours and where I can use my mobile in the open without fear of being killed for it. Until then, where's the tequila? - Abe

NOW WE ALL KNOW WHAT IS AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW!!
    05/05/2008 14:32
Brandon, you have hit the proverbial nail on the head. you have voiced what so many people including myself are feeling. I have to admit that I used to look down on all my family and friends who "deserted" the New South Africa. I could not understand why they didn't want to give SA a chance to prove that it was different. I now have to swallow my accusations and i am looking for a way out for myself and my family. As much as I love this country and its people, I have to leave and soon!! - Vicky

      My Country
    05/05/2008 14:34
Great piece Brandon. I cannot help but to feel your frustrations as I'm in a simmilar void at the moment. Should we "Hou Noord en F#$% voort" or should we rather escape this mess and flee for the hills. It seems pretty obvious what we should do but the damn hard part his how do you leave your HOME!!! I love this country, It's my home and why the hell should I give up, pack up and flee. I never thought I'd say this. But it might be best for me to meet you for some tequila!!! - deMoerin

this only applies to white people
    05/05/2008 14:35
i honestly don't know of any black person who wants to leave the country. Skilled or unskilled ones. - tshepo

      Pub or no pub...
    05/05/2008 14:36
So true Brandon, as always! As for the people moaning about "runners", in a country with the highest crimes against children rate in the world (& no-one doing anything about it) i will NOT raise a family. Sometimes you have to think of the best for you kids-to-be. I'd rather raise them where they can be safe. Call me a runner if you want. Athi, your comments are one of the reasons that my time here is up... - MorseCode

    05/05/2008 14:37
*sigh*... I am not going anywhere chief, am saying that with the chaos going on it's nice to see the powers that be concentrating on the things that matter... that's all. Feel free to buy a tequila for me, though. - Brandon

The world is an oyster full of crime and excitement.
    05/05/2008 14:38
Yeah, Brandon, let's go and have a dop on the poor people who's about to find out that things are pretty much the same everywhere. In Oz, a guy got killed, because he wouldn't share his nuts with the murderer. There were 64 murders in Jhb and 43 murders in Sydney in 2007.In NZ, police are stationed permanently at schools to curb gang violence and youth crime.Blair stopped an investigation into corruption in a UK/Saudi arms deal. It's safer and cheaper to move to rural areas than overseas cities. - Doc Lize

South Africa is my home too, you know...
    05/05/2008 14:41
Sorry Athi, I beg to differ. While it is everybody's right stay or leave, you cannot assume that Europeans automatically feel at home in Europe. I have been overseas (Europe)on numerous occasions and everytime the plane touches down at O R Tambo International, I have a lump in my throat, because I'm back HOME! This country belongs to all who want to make a difference - so, let's get down to business and do it! - Jaffie

      Somewhere over the Rainbow
    05/05/2008 14:45
Where is this club, please, Brandon. I hope there is one in the Helderberg... who want's to travel on the N2 at night? I am worried, you don't sound "lekker". Ja, the Scorpion business is extremely disconcerting. Actually (please excuse my language) what we found at the end of the rainbow, is a "crock of shit".. the Scorpions(dung beatles) too. Hope some of it comes is exposed. It must be a massive dung ball. - Alicia

      Double Shot for me
    05/05/2008 14:47
Cheers mate! Couldn't agree more. It's not about colour it's about the ANC goverments inability to get anything right. I have my staff telling me that they have won, won I say, won what...just look around. When will black people get it, judging from the rest of Africa never. I think I will have another drink. Cheers mate, and to all of those leaving, look forward to have pint on the other side. - KillBill

      That's what I'm talking about.
    05/05/2008 14:47
Brandon, that's it dude. Can't agree more. I heard a saying once, and I'm replacing all words that might cause this to not get posted: "If you urinate on yourself - you can only stay warm for so long". Look at everything around us, everything is falling apart slowely... Since 1994 (insert urine) things have been heading downhill slowely (Eskom etc). The government is finding out that AA and BEE have worked all the smart people out, and now things are falling apart. I doubt SA will recover. - Azonic

      i'm going
    05/05/2008 14:48
Just on my way to ORT - flight booked for Sydney. Will pop in for a drink on the way - have a good old "Charles Glass" waiting for me please! I am going to miss them, but I will not miss the crime, living in fear, constant moaning about how unfair apartheid was and how I, as a white, owe them, I will not miss Eskom, Joburg city council or any of the other badly managed SA co's who have made life intolerable lately coz they hire people based on the color of their skin and not their quailifications - Lau

      The truth
    05/05/2008 14:48
Yes, LvH it seems as if you are one of those who doesn't mind gross, continuos incompetence. Or am I misreading your statement. Brandon, one thing is for sure..things ain't going to get better soon! Some of us want to put our family first, and then there are those that continue to believe that things will get better. Not at the current rate; government are simply not interested. I see the ACT Brumbies are even recruiting potential emigrants; Oz will be only to happy to have them. - S

      Is Brandon going?
    05/05/2008 14:50
I didnt get that from his article, but I could be wrong. I on the other hand unfortunately am, just like the blacks who fled during aparheid to give their kids a better chance, all thoose kids are now here running companies and the ones that stayed are working in there gardens. So please stay and fight crime, I'm no super hero though. - B

      Tears of the Sun
    05/05/2008 14:52
While a small minority of South Africans (of all colours) look to the West as a guide, many South Africans and visitors from our borders, look to the rest of Africa for a snapshot of 'normality'. Its true, life in SA is good compared to some African war zones, but do we really want to ens up with a civil war and ethnic cleansing? Use 'best practice principles' to set the standard of suffer the consequences. - ian

      Well Said
    05/05/2008 14:53
Well said my man. Why is that ordinary people like us can see what is going on in this country, but the fat cat politicians dont see anything, maybe a trip to the Optometrist is needed for all of them. My bags are packed and i am off. - Mark

      Thanks Brendon
    05/05/2008 14:56
Quite enjoyed that - don't worry I got your point although I can see there are a few here that didn't. Tshepo - I wish that were true but there are many many black people who are leaving especially newly qualified university graduates - the lure of earning pounds and dollars is just too great! - stack

      Bi...bi...
    05/05/2008 14:57
Ja..nee..voertsek..koebaai..Oh and before you go..the rainbow nation is waiting to happen..we jus need to purge this Afrika of ours from those who do not belong. Geddit..rainbow after the rain..new,clean,fresh,multicoloured! - Cape Town Kid

      Like Zim
    05/05/2008 14:58
Eight years ago when I worked in Zim you could get one US$ for about 5 ZIM $. Then Mugabe started with the Farms and many people left. The ons staying said, it will get better. Check now. Shall we also sit in sunny RSA and wait for better days? Problem is you wount be able to go anywhere when the rand is 30 or 50 against the $. Think it can't happen? Look North - Sandman

      HOMELAND
    05/05/2008 14:59
As a colourd South African I do not know any other COUNTRY I can call home other than my homeland South Africa. All the generations before me in my family and I was borne in this country and I will die in this country. I am a 100% patriot in the good and the bad times - to blame government for being spineless and jump ship is plane and simple an act of a coward. All of these whites who are jumping ship are the same ones whose forefathers how migrated to RSA for free land and jobs from Europe and now that the same country from whom they have enrich themselves need them they opted to immigrate to the homelands of there forefathers - my message to them is that they are parasites who have feeded on the wealth of the poor hungry and homeless. - colin

      Many are considering leaving
    05/05/2008 14:59
Yip Brandon, I think many people are considering leaving simply because of the crime. We cannot wait around for our loved ones to be raped, hijacked, murdered, etc. When is this carnage going to stop. Perhaps most people are hanging on to the little hope that there is, in Jacob Zuma, Yes thats correct I said JZ, after all he is the only one prepared to talk about bring in the death penalty. Can you imaging what these foreign visitors are in for in 2010 - its going to be open season for criminals. - Al

Have a fabulous trip to Sydney,I for one will die for my country, things will get right one day. You are not a native African in anyways, Go find you real home, I doubt that you have found it yet because I am certain Sydney is not it, you'll just be another forigner there as you are here, SO CHEERS....at least SA tried offered you a place to call home even though it is not perfect. - Skhokho

    05/05/2008 15:07
You obviously misread the statement. We obviously accepted incompetence under the Nats without running to Australia. so, we can deal with ANC incompetence too. Unless you have a better option. If you wish to leave, cheers. Enjoy I have a friend who is coming back to Johannesburg. He is bored to death in Australia - LvH

Like most of the time you are sitting the pot miss. There are lots of black South Africans in London. They left the country for the same reason ? crime and a corrupt ANC government. I wish you could see them. I saw many at Valiant Swart concerts!!!! - EB

why it only applies to white people...
    05/05/2008 15:09
the reason only white people are leaving, is due to the fact that only White People's standards have dropped. Whites had good roads, good schools, good healthcare. Blacks had nothing. Now the healthcare, roads and schools are all in utter chaos - but hey, at least the blacks have something now, even if it's in a total mess!! This country has finally been 'Africanised' by the Africans! - colinh

      Rain
    05/05/2008 15:09
To have a rainbow, you need rain. It may be raining right now, but I have hope that we may yet again see the 'bow. But it will take people to stand up rather than leave. Stay and vote for a strong opposition so that we can force the current bunch of mamparas to either appoint people who can (and are prepared to) do the work needed or get out and let someone else have a go. - Wiseman

Having lived overseas, I agree with your sentiment. Each time I go outside the country or even anywhere inside the country, landing at OR Tambo brings me back right home. Happy for anyone to leave if they want to. I say, "Stop Talking About it" "Just Do It" I am not bitter. I want you to enjoy your remaining life, but do not presume I ignorant of what is happening here. I am staying to deal with those problems. You can leave and become Canadian. - LvH

      GIve...
    05/05/2008 15:10
... me a double shot of tequila please:-) Tshepo, 3 people in my company and 7 people (ALL BLACK) from my sister company in JHB have either left or are in the process of leaving for Canada, NZ and Dubai, they are all degreed educated skilled people.... Does not matter if they are black or white, they are skilled, exactly the type of persons we do NOT want to leave SA. CRIME IS KILLING SA!!!!!!!!!! - Angela

      Hunter hunted
    05/05/2008 15:10
None of my current (forced access to my house) friends want to leave the country either. All my family and all my good friends has left years ago. I am still busy hunting. Will leave soon but have to do my little bit first. - Hunter

You will not be lonely at that bar
    05/05/2008 15:10
You definitely will not be lonely at that bar. For every citizen leaving through OR TAMBO, 10 others will join through the hole in fence in the nothern border. These new friends may even rob or kill you, but over a few few beers it may be more bearable. This hole will remain open and life will continue going backwards because the majority vote to the ANC is an emotional one and the ANC knows that they do no have to actually do anything, as long as they occassionally make the right promises. - Alan

      On the other side.
    05/05/2008 15:11
My daughter (10) and myself have just immagrated to Sydney 5 weeks ago, it is really tough in the beging as we miss SA so much, but I read 24News every 2nd day and realise that this is the right choice I have made esspecialy for my daughter's education. The only thing I hate is that where I am living no one knows what Super 14 is, I record the games where the Bulls(Bulls fan) are playing then watch it all by myself and wish I had all my SA friends here with me. EX SA - Rene

      If there is one thing
    05/05/2008 15:14
That will make me leave it will be my family's safety , BEE AA corruption all that crap does not affect me, I am self suffeint and dont need any welfare from the ANC... They ony nailing their own people - charlie

      Colin...BORING!!!!
    05/05/2008 15:15
Colin you response was once again as boring and repetitive as all of your comments and once again go to show that you did not read the article! Brandon categorically stated, 'its not because we have a black government that people are leaving!" Furthermore, 1000's of skilled black dudes are leaving too also scared for their lives and their families!! - dwp

      Homeland 2
    05/05/2008 15:16
Colin, you say you are coloured, then that makes you half European too! Which also means that one half of your forefathers come from Europe. By the looks of your spelling, the future of SA doesn't look to promising.... - cvz

Are people really leaving...I doubt that....
    05/05/2008 15:16
I really dont know if i should believe anyone on this website telling us that he/she is leaving..take Juan for example..He told us last year already that he was leaving..actually he said he is packing for perth.guess what he is still munching the boerewors and biltong here in mzansi... - Kolobe

      Rainbow warriors
    05/05/2008 15:16
Nice article Brandon. You will notice that only the ignorant respondents and the one's who cannot qualify to leave SA are making negative remarks. Your article for me sums up the desperate situation in our country. Will it get better? I think not given the high level of incompetence prevalent right now. The best thing to do is to go and live in a normal society elsewhere. Let the rainbow warriors turn SA into the 3rd world country it is becoming. - Stormin

      Leaving.
    05/05/2008 15:22
Your words are the words of truth. Just ignore those who babble on about staying and making S.A a better place to be as they probably don't have the option to leave and are jealous of those who can. - frank

      I'm staying :P
    05/05/2008 15:24
I am a white South African and I sure as hell will not leave. I'm not European as I was born in this country so THIS IS MY home. So Athi the statement you made is a bit stupid. I will ride out this storm cause I know my God and Saviour will protect me and my family from any harm that might come to us. None of my close friends or family have been touched by violent crime and for that I am truly blessed and I thank God for that. - RC

Brandon, I agree. You left out NZ !
    05/05/2008 15:25
Agree fully with your sentiments. Also, RSA have enough skilled people but they now count under the poorest citizens in thr country because they are WHITE and cannot get long term employement. I am leaving for NZ in Dec. Sure I will meet some of you there! To tsepho and those with simmular mentallity, I know of many BLACK people, some collegues of mine, that have already left. So! when sanity returns, you will be faced with the same issues. It is not a colour thing, but relates to COMPETENCY. - Matrix

      Home sweet , home.
    05/05/2008 15:27
Guy's South Africa is the place to be , you will find crime all over the world their is no place better then SA guys trust me. Why do u think V.Matfield is coming back to SA. We have nice weather, Biltong ,Castle, braai attending a rugby game at King's Park and a good beer come nothing beats that. Then u go over to the UK it rains 80% of the time. Yes Crime is bad but pls i think the media over does it. They make it sound as if the moment u walk outside u have an ak47 up your ass. - TT

      Where do we start?

Hi Guys! Brandon, i just love your perception! I always tell my "oversees" clients: Weclome to SA where crime pays. If you a criminal, just maybe you could run for President! (Besides Madiba - He's cool) Unfortunately i have that k@k job of trying hard to keep South Africans (irrespective of colour!) that have trades or some form of special skills like engineering here at home. And how do i do that? Growel, beg & kiss ass!!! Shane - CA Engineering

For goodness sake, go now - you SA haters
    05/05/2008 15:32
Do you need someone's approval to go? Why do you continually need to rationalise yourself? If, as you say SA is a sinking ship, why try to drag it down with you and use every opportunity to make it worse. Goodbye, you won't be missed. - WAM

      Pay the man :-)
    05/05/2008 15:33
Brandon - News24 should start paying you :-). Regards Pagel - Pagel

      Home sweet ...HOME
    05/05/2008 15:34
What an article Bradon, it's so funny yet so serious. How come we don't hear about stories or feedback from those who left n came back with their tails between them legs? Like i once said, if a house is on fire, the teenants will run n leave but the landlord will stay n put the fire out. Let them leave...NAIZA. - Naiza

      Doubles up!!!
    05/05/2008 15:38
Brandon, bottoms up, I'll meet you at the pub...and to the rest of you negatives assholes like Skhokho (doos), Kolobe (idiot), Cape Town Dick..sorry Kid..If you a kid get back to school, your opinion is not wanted...Up yours cause you can't remember how to enjoy a little joke....or is it reality to you! - Win

      Classic
    05/05/2008 15:39
Great article, it's nice to have a laugh about a bad situation. I think this year is going to be make or break for South Africa. I think that the government is going to find it increasingly hard to get the people to blindly follow them. Let's turn this gravy train into a well run mag-lev. - Rian

      Sad, but I agree...
    05/05/2008 15:41
Three weeks ago my daughter left for Australia and I?m soon to follow. It?s sad, but must be done. If SA is to be any ?better? than any of Africa, TELL ME WHY. (Brandon listed a few reasons why NOT) If at all, will it be after the third or fourth POST-struggle government? (Zimbabwe is still in it?s FIRST?.) - Ernie

      Tshepo ;)

RE: "this only applies to white people"
    05/05/2008 15:42
... of course it only applies to white people. We are the ones suffering under the fundamentally racist policy of "affirmative action". - ST

    05/05/2008 15:42
LOL, my brother I normally don't agree with you, but on this issue I do. Like LvH I must have the wrong kind of friends cos none of them (mostly Hons/Master grads like me that I met at UCT)look at me like I'm crazy when I ask if they've considered emigration. - VG

      So sad but so true...
    05/05/2008 15:44
... it's the crime and corruption that sends people packing. Most of my friends have left and although I planned to go overseas for the experience, I am now thinking of going for good. By the way Athi, white people are not all from Europe and not all the white South Africans can go 'back' to their so-called homes in Europe due to the visa requirements. For the reader that said this is white issue, you should hear about the black medical staff working in the UK. - Monique

      I qualify
    05/05/2008 15:44
I qualify to leave (and then some) - but I don't want to leave just yet... Everything I have and love is in this country!! I very much want to be part of a society that is building itself up, and I'll be the first to admit that for the first time since 1994 I'm considering leaving.... But I don't want to.... I'll never want to... Why can't we be part of the solution? Only if the powers that be don't want us to be.... If only they could come out and say that I guess - then we'd all know. - Craig

      @stack
    05/05/2008 15:44
there's nothing wrong with taking up a 2 yr visa to go and make pounds in the UK, that's different to a whiner who leaves becuz white privilleges are no more. - tshepo

      Leave broe, it's your choice
    05/05/2008 15:45
If a person wants to leave they are free to do so! go and have a good life in europe, my advise to you is that while you might be inclined to bad mouth the country please do also remember that some good things are happenning, South Africans are not very interested in the country to seek to know more. - Jusjazz

      F*** you all
    05/05/2008 15:46
for criticising those who leave. It's pathetic that you have to take out your frustrations on those looking to better their lives. White, black, green or blue - what difference does it make? I am not ashamed to want something better for my kids and my government can't provide it and there will never be a better government voted in because the great masses are too stupid to realise they are being wronged by their government. So why should I put up with the situation when I don't have to? - Tired of fools

I am at the pub already!!
    05/05/2008 15:48
Hi Brandon, you know, I left good ole SA 10 years ago, not beacuse I wanted to for the reasons you stated, but because my company at the time was expanding internationally, so I went. I worked and developed myself, my skills improved, I worked in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, all more and more senior roles. I decided to come back, but no-one wants to employ me, why?..well coz I am white. So much for the skills shortage!!, so bye, bye!! - Wasip

      Really Now
    05/05/2008 15:49
I'm really irritated by the negativity towards BEE and SA.It is fact that if you were white during Apartheit you benefited from it whether you liked it or not.White people are a minority in this country in terms of numbers, yet they hold the economy. Why be self-fish about everything. Why not let Black people as well be developed.By running away to other countries says a lot about character.I have been exposed in crime more than most white people. Please now guys U R not the 1st believe me. - Good Riddance

Hey, it's everybody's right to stay or go
    05/05/2008 15:52
If you want to leave, leave. If you want to stay, stay. But whatever you do, don't let your mind be made up by stuff you read in the papers that has absolutely no bearing on your life. Leave for the right reasons, leave for personal reasons. But to leave because of same ol' cr*p you hear that never personally affects you, makes no sense to me. - Nick

To all those going, going, gone.
    05/05/2008 15:53
I'm really getting irritated with those planning to emigrate or already gone, always insinuating that those staying in SA, either can't go, are stupid, have a death wish or don't care about their children.I know a lot of professionals who can get visums(including me), love their small children and families, are not stupid and are staying! If you want to go, feel free. - Doc Lize

      Do your homework
    05/05/2008 15:54
Hey Tshepo, you should do your homework. Many skilled and educated blacks have left this country after 1994. And more are leaving as we speak. Some of them even contribute to this site from abroad. Believe me, it is not only whites who are leaving! - cedb00

      The sad truth
    05/05/2008 15:56
The last two months I've felt the same. I have interviews setup and I'm flying out the end of the month. The slightly educated folk that comment about people immigrating now days fall into two categories. The first group is quick to call names and badmouth the people that leave. The second group that still believes that it's going to get better. This second group is also decreasing in size year after year, scandal after scandal, crisis after crisis. South Africa is my country. Nothing and no one will change this. However as a Nation we have drowning in our ignorance. Those who sarcastically wave the immigrating skills away only show how little they know on the workings of a Economy. Time will serve as the stark reminder on how foolish your views now are. It?s usually the Fool that is the last to know that the ship has sailed without him So long, and thanks for the fish. - Chow

      Part at Tshepo's house!
    05/05/2008 15:57
Hey Tshepo - Short sightedness like that is what got us in this position in the first place! Black or white - likewise are leaving, you can stay here and talk to your un-skilled or skilled folk - dodge that bullet, bunk that knife, oh, and take out a mortgage to fund Mr Mbeke's new plane! The Pot at the end of the rainbow has been stolen, and is funding Zuma's court cases! Good article Brendon, don't pay attention to little people like Tshepo! - Gunston

With my education and qualifications, I can leave anytime I want to. I can also spot opportunities that simple minded people normally would not spot. I was invited by a US embassy interviewer to apply for a working VISA. So, some of us make a choice because we want to. - L van Heerden

      @cedb00, and i have a greek colleague
    05/05/2008 16:06
who has dual citizenship and can go anywhere. a white boss who's rich and can pack anytime(but will not). a french dude who counsults for us sometimes, who choose to stay here permanently. Did i mention i know of at least 3 french exchange programme students who choose SA for residency? Indians who are very skilled in IT and are consultants and now reside in Midrand. I've worked with all these people. So what's your point? - tshepo

64 murders in Jhb in 2007??? What are you smoking?? So you are saying the other 19936 murders where in the rest of the country? NZ had 45 murders last year, 41 already resolved and locked up. Those fools saying move to the platteland, please do it and see /live in a proper bankkrupt municipality with no infrastructure. - Stats SA

I know of black people that left to educate themselves or take up temporary opportunities. I have not come across any black person that has migrated permanently to australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc. but hey, I seem to miss out on all this fun of a mass black migration. Perhaps I know the wrong people too. Seriously, I know of a few Indians that have migrated, not to India but to Australia - L

When you say no one has employed you, do you mean you expected someone to jump up and down and employ you because you are well travelled? I would have thought that your travels teaches you to be self-sufficient. BTW, why would you come back where you were such a star, if you had no offer in place. Excuse my skeptism, but I have heard this story before from incompetent people running away from their own incompetence expecting to be worshipped. - Len van Heerden

Ry of bly - it's an individual choice
    05/05/2008 16:11
Emigration is not for everyone, what works for me, may not work for you and vice versa. It's a personal decision. I am extremely happy in Sydney. Anyone who says this place is boring, probably failed to succeed here. Amazing what a great country a bunch of convicts have built here since 1789, and it's light-years ahead of S.A. As for no Super14, in which area are you living Rene?? Most companies in the city run tipping comps for the S14 and it has a big following. PLENTY Saffers here. - Wombat

No more copper, no more crime
    05/05/2008 16:12
If I lived in Somalia, I would rather come steal copper lines in SA than stay there. But when its all gone, what then ? Why is illegal immigration only one directional ? You dont see Europeans/Americans being smuggled into Africa ? The civilised world needs to place African leadership on notice for failing their people. Koos Ps Is Charlise Theron now an African American ? - Koos

      Tired of Fools
    05/05/2008 16:14
Perhaps it is your hypocrisy that people are concerned about. You obviously well old enough to experienced apartheid and yet did not run because you enjoyed the benefits. Leave if you must, but surely, you need to make the decision instead of talking about it. Leave already and make the decision for your family and not us. We mean nothing to you, but your family does. Go, please, already. - Len Anderson

      Wifey and I also qualify
    05/05/2008 16:15
My wife and I also qualify. We actually qualify to go live and work in Sydney itself and not one of the other hic towns/cities in Australi? But do you see me leave...NO!! Everything I love is in South Africa. I will not give that up...no bloody ways. I also have a lot of faith that it will get better. The ones who want to leave, you better do it soon cause I've got a feeling that door is going to close very soon as well. - RC

      S
    05/05/2008 16:16
No, S, I do not work for a government department. Cannot deal with the imcompetence in some of the departments. Having said that, if I wanted to leave, believe me, I would not discuss my decision in a forum, I would do so in my dining room table. Just because I have a certain view does not mean I belong in a certain camp. Those who talk about something often cannot do it. Those who can, have gone already. - LvH

      "Normal" society?
    05/05/2008 16:17
I continue to be amazed by people who think that South Africa has a "normal" society, and who continually convince themselves that the rest of the world is as bad when it comes to crime and corruption. Go do your own research on the numbers, but here are some (murders per 100 000 people): Canada - 2, Australia - 2, New Zealand - 3, South Africa - 40. Can you do the math? - Canuck

for goodness sake take the chip off your shoulder man. your hatred for white people blinds you from the truth. its comments like yours that perpetuates the racism. your bitterness for white people (who predominantly have never lived with the so-called apartheid privileges) is going to eat you up inside. how are we supposed to respect you when you show none to us. or is the racism you despise now justified on others not of your ethnicity. - mp3's mentor

      Checks and balances
    05/05/2008 16:19
First off, i love South Africa. I don?t see myself leaving in a hurry. That said, there is more than enough to worry about. When those clever people sat down to negotiate the structure of government and constitution they created structures so that, when power starts to corrupt, it can be impeded. Now, when the government unilaterally starts to break down the structures that keep these checks and balances, there is nothing to restrain one power of infringing on another. What?s next? The constitutional court? Why not give legal authority to the legislature whilst you are at it. This is the problem that occurs when there is an absolute majority in control. - Zenith

Atleast their goverment's brain is not in their arse..
    05/05/2008 16:22
Lets see what happens when all the skilled leave an d leave the ANC government to it's own mercy. Will be a victim of it's own success especially if the "uneducated masses" turn against it, especially when promises are made that are not kept? such as service delivery. VIVA UK. At least the UK has a government with a brain. - Jinx

There's a whole world out there - let's be adventurous and travel - not for the sake of leaving SA per se, but also to explore other countries. If we like, we can stay for as long as we want, if not, we can come back to SA with some saved up dollars or pounds, and may be better off than when we left?! ANC policy of AA doesn't inspire confidence in job opportunities for white males - worrying. And management of beloved sports like Rugby is becoming politicised - irritating. So bye! - Maza

      We don't belong???
    05/05/2008 16:31
Why is it that blacks and coloureds say the white people do not belong and must go home. If I had another home besides this one do you not think I would have gone to it long ago? This is my home, but I hate it. Its like living in a violent, abusive family home where the parents hate you and want you to just get out. I am doing all I can to leave. I want to raise my kids in a safe world where they can hope for future while I still have kids to raise. - Karen

      let me also add that
    05/05/2008 16:32
making all those pounds only makes sense when you come back and spend them in SA, so go on bring that money. The exchange rate doesnt apply when you don't exchange anything. It amazes me how ppl resort to insults when one has a differing opinion. Now if i dare say it's the Apartheid brainwashing that "whitey's always right", im a racist or hateful. When a person like mp3 is simply a product of his environment. - tshepo

      @ LvH - why!!!
    05/05/2008 16:33
Are you crazy!!! I am desperately trying all I can to get out of this hell hole and you are passing up an opportunity handed to you on a plate!!! Are you crazy!! The little that is left will be gone soon. - Karen

This is now a new one, that you start to equate the present government of idiots to 'an incompetent NAT government'. There was nothing incompetent about the NAT government, evil yes. But the only reason you would start to make this comparison now as a justification, is because you are accepting that the NAC government is incompetent and corrupt. Well done! - ramone
