What do the following institutions have in common; Land Bank, SAA, SABC and Eskom? Stop fumbling and scratching your head! The answer is simple, they are all state-owned enterprises that have been performing badly and are in management crisis.

In the past two years the national carrier has apparently failed to make a profit and that resulted in a lot of cutting down on its expenditure. Their sponsorships of the lucrative golf tournament and domestic soccer knockout competition were halted and a number of incentives were also cancelled in a desperate bid to save funds. Massive staff retrenchment was also contemplated.

For a long time the Land Bank was very quiet and seemed to be well-run. It appears that during its long silence, a lot has been happening inside the bank, and by the time it exploded into the public, millions had apparently been carelessly spent, as we heard of leaders who had dismally failed in their duties but taken home millions in wages and bonuses.

The SABC, not to be outdone, is also a circus. The public broadcaster was led by one funny Dali Mpofu, who in addition to massive profit loss and poor broadcasting service, also lost the Premier Soccer league and International cricket council broadcast rights to Supersport. You must be absent from office for a year to miss such big contracts with strong public interest.

In comes the award winner, Eskom. No need to tell you what Eskom did. Now if such important institutions are in a crisis, it says something about the government in charge.

    Not fine

We cannot have an ailing national airline and collapsing public broadcaster and still maintain that everything is fine. The reason why these organisations are failing dismally is not that incompetent people were hired to run them, it is that wrong people with irrelevant skills and little knowledge about the business, were hired to steer these big ships.

From all these failures, there is an important lesson that emerged and which I hope our government has learned. The lesson is that, appoint politicians inside parliaments and legislatures, but leave the corporations to talented and skilled business people because they will save you from humiliation and most importantly, they will deliver quality service and products to the nation.

These people need not necessarily be aligned to your party. You cannot politicise business and talent and skill cannot be gained through political struggle. Our government needs to embark on a massive hunt for skills, creativity and talent while also putting in place education structures that will breed and nurture young talent.

We need the likes of Kaizer Motaungs and Maria Ramos. There are some things the Fikile Mbalulas will not be able to handle even for a week, hence you need to put the Mbalulas in parliament to do the talking, and the Motsepes and Oppenheimers in the business side of things to deliver quality service and products to the voting masses and boost our economy.

There are some things politics cannot not replace.

      Hands off....
    14/05/2008 12:39
Is it not fuuny that SAA has made millions in profits and so did the SABC...Eskom has recorded high sales last year and paid bonuses to employees...this companies are performing well under the circumstances...the compentant white airline in nationwide has colapsed, the competant DSTV is changind channels everyday because it cannot cope with the competition...They are performing like oiled machine Sello....Eskom is trying to sort out the mess made by the previous competant CEO..and competant Elec - Kolobe

      What view
    14/05/2008 12:41
Although I agree, it is quite a capitalist view, yet the ANC, we read, is moving a bit towards socialism. Changing these businesses to strict profit making entities would not be welcomed by Cosatu, for instance. - MJ

      Skills shortage
    14/05/2008 12:46
So why are we still engaging in BEE and AA etc at the cost of our country's performance (or lack of). Isn't it time to stop racist poltical practices and focus rather just on skills and getting the jobs done? The masses will benefit the most if government structures are equipped with work willing, skilled and literate people. - Michael

      NEWS 24 LOST THE PLOT
    14/05/2008 12:48
I dont think that News24 really encourages expresion of diverse views...why is it that the black commentors that gets published always have to critisize the government or the ANC??many people wrote positive articles about our contry and they were never published... - Kolobe

      EINA!!!
    14/05/2008 12:51
That pinch hurt, so I must be awake! I could not agree with you more Sello my man. I just hope government will hunt skills from inside SA and not run to Cuba and other countries. I hope that government will see there are white people who can still help/want to help. Cheers to you. - jannie

      Afrikan politics
    14/05/2008 12:51
Agreed, these institutions are an embarassment to Afrika. I should also state that blind loyalties is to blame for their downfall. However, one can not divorce business from politics as the latter is responsible for creating an environment in which the former must operate. If it was not of the current politics, would we still have a Motsepe? No! Until recently, parastatals were in the hands of caucasians for the benefit of the caucasian...that is politics. - Mankhane

      Afrikan politics...continued
    14/05/2008 12:54
The Afrikan is a failure in that he is not using these same politics to benefit those who are his own. - Mankhane

      Circus
    14/05/2008 12:56
The SABC has always been a Circus or a freak show whetever you like to call it, and we must'nt waste our breath and writing space as it will never change. - Mxolisi Selby Shabangu

      This is business
    14/05/2008 12:56
Good article, Sello. Agree with everything you say - talent and entrepeneurship are qualities that you either have or don't; let us, as taxpayers, ask for the best affordable people to be found to run the state enterprises, and to heck with the politics of those people. - Dave Robbins

      Best article yet.
    14/05/2008 12:57
I could not agree more, we don't care who does it as long as it's done right. Black, white, indian etc etc doesn't matter. - Nic

South Africans are not Zimbo's.Despite all the spin and idiots like Kolobe we are not going to follow blindly and let politicians ruin our country for our kids futures. You can't fool all of the people all of the time.Clean up corruption in goverment. - too true

      Poor Management
    14/05/2008 12:58
Its all about power and greed. These ANC leaders did not fight apartheid to free their people, they were fighting for POWER and WEALTH. These politicians are fat and lazy. - dhv

      whats the difference?
    14/05/2008 12:58
"...is not that incompetent people were hired to run them, it is that wrong people with irrelevant skills and little knowledge about the business, were hired.." - whats the difference? If you dont have the relevant skills for a job, you are incompetent to do that job. I am an accountant and would therefore be an incompetent engineer. - greggo

      On the button Sello
    14/05/2008 12:59
It's all true. Now the million dollar question is: Will THIS government face up to the issues at hand and fix things - or will things slowly but surely disintegrate into what the rest of africa has managed to get into. History is not on our side and the smart money will be on SA following the 'african' route. Sadly. - Gus

      State of the nation
    14/05/2008 13:03
Eskom, SAA, Land bank, SABC, Police, Army, ACSA, public transport, Metro rail, schools, health care, the 2010 stadiums, Gautreain, N2 Gateway project, SA Cricket, SA Rugby, SA Soccer, etc. etc. The government managed to mess all of this up. Maybe we should stop debating whether a minority or majority race should rule the country, and start looking at who's got the skills to take crucial decision and give it to that person. The ANC is useless - Danny

      Sello

I totally agree with you mate. We need to keep politics out of our business. These huge service providers should be run for the voters by skilled business men and not by the comrades and cousins of government ministers! - Lokibele Mtiso

how can a former school teacher know about managerment or running a fainance dept or responseble for assets of a copmany he will definilty screw up put people with skills relevent to they jobs. you need a specialized sphere of knowledge to certain work not freedom fighters or MK's guerillas - thabo

    14/05/2008 13:09
The skills that you are looking for all of a sudden, were here, and are now slowly leaving. the rate of educational growth is minuscule compared to the current exodus we are experiencing. But why has it taken so long to realise that you actually need a skill in order to work?? duh. pass the buck please... - Greg

      Off Topic
    14/05/2008 13:13
Slightly off-topic but I find it a tragedy that Nation Wide is now gone (at least they had decent leg room) while a cramped air line like Mango, with it's SAA connections, survives (probably with lots of tax payers' money). - Nanker Phelje

      Of course everything is fine!
    14/05/2008 13:14
"We cannot have an ailing national airline and collapsing public broadcaster and still maintain that everything is fine." Of course it's fine! In the context of SA we cannot afford NOT to have an ailing airline and collapsing broadcaster otherwise these two illustrious organizations will be out of character with everything else which is ailing and collapsing, right? - Cynical

      Kolobe Propaganda
    14/05/2008 13:15
Lies, lies, all lies. The landbank was involved in the +Billion Rand fraud thing. SABC (Who watches SABC?), SAA Made a profit?! Bullcrap! The ONLY profit they make, is the subsidies the government keeps pumping into them. Eskom?! Let us NOT even go there dude. I have NO idea who has been feeding you these lies Kolobe. - Sinudeity

      Business/Politics
    14/05/2008 13:19
Sello, Well said ,but the truth always burns a politicians backside. And they have to look after their friends ,so top positions are handed out with massive help yourself bonus. As for skill's and professional experiance , we all where that has gone. Hugo - Hugo

      yea right..
    14/05/2008 13:19
we have the right skills in SA but unfortunately the skin tone of these skilled professionals are a little too light for the likes of kolobe and his ilk. so into the dark ages we march. - mp3's mentor

      Kolobe (AGAIN!!)
    14/05/2008 13:20
What are you smoking??? Where has SAA made profits my friend?? Please backup your "facts" with proof. And as for Eskom, sure they recorded record sales, which is why most of SA was plunged into darkness every other day. And as for DSTV, what competition do they have?? Correct me if I am wrong but DSTV is the only pay tv-service in SA. What competition are you speaking of? Please stop shooting your mouth off on here and trying to act intelligent, you aren't fooling anybody. - TruthBeTold

      Controll freaks
    14/05/2008 13:20
The ANC are controll freaks. They must controll everything and everyone. Therefore they will allways interfere with business. They cannot even stand it that they have lost one Mayoral position to the DA even though they are controlling everything else. They have tried everything to get Zille out of office short of killing her. - Steven

      Excellent
    14/05/2008 13:27
Let's face it: politicians need to be saved from their own stupidity. That's why parastatals should be run be competent, non-party affiliated technocrats and not buddies and cronies. Politicians don't know anything about running an electrical utility or an airline or a health department and should rather stick to making speeches and being put out to pasture when they've had their two-terms worth in parliament. Anytime they think they can make a difference they just muck things up. - Longbow

      Excellent article
    14/05/2008 13:27
My personal view on SABC, is that its apartheid in reverse. If they not showing bring repeated movies, then they showing stuff which we cannot understand. We represent our whites by seven de laan, and our blacks by generations, but where has our indian movies gone to? From showing it late at night to not at all, why should I pay my t.v licence, when what they show is not really intended for me? - Saras

      Kolobe my brother!
    14/05/2008 13:27
We must not defend our government just because it's black. Even if we are voting for it, we need to commend and complain as well, it's maturity. The SABC is failing its viewers, the majority of whom are poor blacks. You can't tell me that its leadership should not be blamed. Land Bank also failed black people in terms of land redistribution funding. Tell me if you think that's okay. And Kolone, SAA has not made profit, read today's BUSINESS REPORT. - Sello

      A true Libertarian!
    14/05/2008 13:31
Libertarianism is a broad spectrum of political philosophies, each sharing the common overall priority of maximum limitation of government. combined with optimum possible individual liberty. You are so right Cello the smaller the government the better.South Africa's economy is 63.2 percent free we need to increase economic freedom to 90% to really grow this country. - Roy Mountjoy

      This won't be posted
    14/05/2008 13:32
MyNews24 is pathetic! Kolobe's comments are clearly just posted to stir and generate more postings. I sent a letter a few days ago asking if News24 believes much of the racist ranting isn't counter productive and irresponsible. No surprise, it didn't get published. Why fabricate posts that make black people appear so unintelligent? Its not helping anyone. - ian e

      Uninformed article
    14/05/2008 13:33
SABC, Telkom did make profits. You must research your facts before posting an article. Gov has admitted that they were warned by Telkom about pending power shortages and did nothing. What was Telkom supposed to do? They did their part. SAA was making looses even under a certain caucasian who was paid huge amounts as settlement. Do you think Maria Ramos is not a political appointment? Get real - Pasta

      Partly True
    14/05/2008 13:34
however, before we can try to demacate business and politics, some sectors depending mainly on the market structure cannot function properly without state intervention. some in SA include energy, imagine if the state had just privatised Eskom. It was just going to inherit a favourable market position at the expense of any incumbent player. and it was unlikely that eskom as a private player would have dealt with some socio-economic issues facing SA. Look what happened in the steel sector (Iscor) - Boni

      Sello for president!
    14/05/2008 13:34
You are so right, Sello. Strong economics build a strong nation - everyone one of us has a skill that can help lift up our nation. Every single South African's ancestors migrated from somewhere else in the world - SA doesn't belong to anyone - it belongs to everyone. We all have the right to apply our talents, knowledge and qualifications in relevant industries and help build the legs for the economy to stand on. - Micki

    14/05/2008 13:38
SAA and Eskom have been making huge profits (on occasion) on the basis that they are state subsidised and have entrenched monopolies in their respective industries. To try to racialise the well communicated argument from Sello by referring to the failure of "white" Nationwide, an airline that IS NOT subsidised by the state, is not only completely disingenuous and utterly devoid of intellect Kolobe, but also shows your increasingly desperate and racist attempts to obfiscate the issues at hand.o - oracle

Who gives a toss about any other major airlines. Just because they make a loss does that give us reason? Anyway here's but a couple, Kulula, 1Time & Comair. Stick to local matters ie government owned SAA. - John Camp

Buddy, you really need to start admitting when the ANC messes up. This will give you more credibility when you defend them from someone who is slamming them without the facts. As a member of the ANC, it is your duty to correct them when they are doing something wrong. If the voters are going to turn a blind eye, then we might as well have a king and allow him to do as he wishes. Our government is young like a child and like a child needs to be reprimanded when it mis-behaves. - Rian

      Incorrect income statement
    14/05/2008 14:40
I am not sure if Sello can read the income statement but SAA has recently made profit. In competition you loose some contracts and gains others it is the nature ot it. Electricity shortage is a global issue not in anyway specific to SA.Brazil, California and most of emerging markets are experiencing the same problem. And other thing not only parastals are badly managed, Nedbank had to rely on Old mutual for its survival, Fedsure went solvent, Saambou, etc. It is the nature of the beast bru!!!! - PP

Next we'll hear its the "Third Force"
    14/05/2008 14:42
which infiltrated these institutions to bring back Apartheid! Only when the ANC is battling to stay in power will anything be done. Until then, ANC voters, enjoy the wreck of arrogance from the 70% majority. Power has corrupted them. Sorry for the 30% who didn't want this... - Zoo Keeper

Sello, Agree & in the final analysis...
    14/05/2008 14:52
Please investigate & get the real FACTS through to us. We dont have the time or resources. Analise the common factors between these. Yes, Competency is required, Politics MUST be kept out. MOST OF ALL, RACISM MUST ALSO be kept out of these structures. There ARE competent skills available in the current market without importing them, but untill attitude of ANC Gov changes, will be lost. WHY? Rather than focus on BEE / AA / EE, why not focus on qualified skills and competent people 2 benefit of all - Matrix

Haaaii Buda Sello what you mentioned is absolutely right. We have a lot of skills in SA but they are not used. I have never heard people complaining about the government like this in my life. Before 1994, we were not crying this much! Now things are bad. These are the last days. - Ntswa ya Teng

      Where in the world,
    14/05/2008 15:01
have one seen a country made of more than 70% of certain population but the economy is run by few aliens and anyway who said during apartheid positions we filled based on skills?AA and BEE are so far the only tools that can help SA redress the inequality of the past. Folks forget that the apartheid residuals are going to be with us for a long time that means white folks are still the most previliged and one point, being black and critical of gov does not mean being correct!!! - PP

      It does not matter
    14/05/2008 15:10
if the SAA, Eskom, Transnet(anyone remember them?)SABC, etc was run by a black, white, green, brown or any colour person. The issue is, there is a huge differance between demolishing a building with C4 and a mine and running that business profitable. Stop nepotism and loyalism and start using competend people for the job. I will support anybody who knows what he is doing, regardless of skin colour, even you Kolobe. - NCL

      Guvmuntu..
    14/05/2008 15:12
Good article, firstly let me elaborate, African people are capable of running these big institutions, but the ANC is doing f*ck up by interfering in the daily operations of these parastatals; the CEs that run these enterprises are more than inept to perform the duties required of them to steer these institutions into the right direction but because our government likes to poke its nose into every decision made by these executives makes them look incompetent. The question is do we need ?guvmuntu stoogies? running these enterprises? Do we need people without authority, who?s decisions are revoked at the helm of guvmuntu interference, people who fear being reprimanded for sticking to their guns. I don?t blame black executives as I believe they have the potential but I blame the guvmunt and above all I blame lame duck executives. - Luzuko

SAA is a transcontinental airline i.e. they fly different routes to those flown by the local airlines. Comparing the performance of SAA to that of Kulula, 1Time and Comair is rather small minded and not fair since none of these operate long distance flights. Talking of local matters, what happened to Nationwide? But, hey, do whatever pleases you, but do not pass that as serious debate - Len van Heerden
