What nonsense 19/05/2008 08:47
Whilst I agree that violence is not the way forward, the foreigners who cross our borders illegally, commit crimes, steal jobs, deal in drugs and prostitution, and rob and steal should have the appropriate punishment meted out to them. Granted, not all are bad, and this may not solve many of the social issues that exist, it will send a message to both South Africans and illegals that South Africa is a country for South Africans, not a refuge for criminals from other parts of Africa. GO HOME!!!! - Mark |

ashamed to be South African 19/05/2008 08:50
When people rape, pillage, beat defenseless people, and laugh at humans being burned to death, then we are a sick sick nation. If it wasn't foreigners, they'll find some other reason.Soon they will turn on South African minorities, tourists, businesses.Whatever and whoever they can blame. Now government is planning to send someone "negotiate" with these people to hear their concerns(as if the refugee problem is new). How do you negotiate with somebody who attacks babies and women? - kwk |

Lazy South Africans 19/05/2008 08:51

Some wise words, 19/05/2008 08:53

Moral no 19/05/2008 08:53
but then morality is rarely an issue. The harsh reality is that more ppl mean less per person. There is not enough to go around as it is and with illegal aliens it burdens the system even more so. The reaction was to be expected. The ANC govt with its quiet diplomacy and leaky border posts is the cause of this, no one else. - IceCreamMan |

Concerned 19/05/2008 09:00
This is horrible and makes me sick. My gardener is directly affected by this and has been displaced from his house in Diepsloot. I?ve been constantly on the phone with him over the weekend but apart from helping financially can do little, which makes it even more frustrating. This is an excellent person working very hard to feed his family in Zim.
What worries me is that now that every minister and leader has ?condemned this?, life goes on and the problem from their side seems to be have dealt with!! What wrong with this place. To make things worse, there are actually people thinking that there is merit in the actions of these animals. I am slowly starting to give up on South Africa, at some point you have to realise that with the levels of lawlessness nothing will ever change.

Xhenophobia 19/05/2008 09:00
What the government does not see is the fact that these attacks have since created some sort of a scape goat for criminals rapists and all other sick elements of this country. These attacks are no more about "they are taking work from us" or otherwise, it's now criminals taking every chance they can get. My fear is when foreigners reitterate what's going to happen then, are we ready for war? Some of these foregners are killers they ran away from war, who knows what thier reitteration will bring. - Thokozani |

South Africans? Peace? You must be joking! 19/05/2008 09:00
We all want to live in a peaceful, prosperous and safe country. - What peaceful? We South Africans dont know what peace is, we've never had one. It has always been like this from way back when apartheid police used to do the same in black communities. Then it continued in democracy when blacks killed one another in political party rifts, and then later taxi violences and strike actions. We have always been a violent country, from way back in apartheid years. - Sello |

Xenophobia 19/05/2008 09:02
The violence being perpetrated on these people is shocking but as someone who does not live in one of these settlements and therefore is not familiar with the dynamcis involved, what has suddenly given way that these attacks are happening now (and with such ferocity)? And can someone please explain to me how an illegal immigrant gets an RDP house when SA's citizens have been on waiting lists for months and even years? Is this just another case of officials accepting under-the-table bribes? - The Truth |

There's always an excuse 19/05/2008 09:02
Absolutely right Lucas, however I look at the so-called fat dead wood sitting in what they call a government speaking from glass houses and behind microphones who have done almost nothing to assist an already poor situation - then they invite foreigners in and expect the already poor to do somethign about it while they sit on their fat arses and blow hard earned money. Another African self made disaster 19/05/2008 09:04
Once all the foreigners go, and still there are jobs for the poor, are you aware that another tribe will be targeted from Zulus to Xhosas, Venda's etc? A full blown Rwanda will ensue. this time we cant blame Europeans, its us doing it on ourselves, dark continent indeed this - TK |

Xenophobia 19/05/2008 09:09
Xenophobic attacks is further evidence that Africa is a very dark continent. Newspapers like Pretoria News should stop the use of hate words like "alien". David Bullard was right after all, despite all the civilisation brought about by globalisation and colonisation (hate it or like it), we Africans are stil embarking on ethnic cleansing. David Bullard was not way off the mark after all. - Happy N. |

Lucas, Agree with your sentiments, but.... 19/05/2008 09:14
I am leaving RSA for NZ in Dec. because of the attitude of and criminal threat from my fellow "Safricans". Xenophobia is just another example of criminals exploiting a situation for their own gain. A famous scientist said that in order for anything to work, it must be destroyed then renew itself. If I look at ZIM, is this what is happening here in RSA now? I will return after RSA renews itself? Until then my family and their safety is all that is important. - Matrix |

Wrong targets for this racist xenophobia 19/05/2008 09:18
Great piece of writing. In my opinion, it is the corrupt councillors and politicians who should receive all the blame for this mess. Giving houses to foreigners not matter how legitimate the reason was always going to be taken negatively by those who have been waiting in the line for years. Apparently, 3 legal migrants who came to the country 14 years ago now have houses in the disputed section of Alex. No matter, nothing can justify the barbarism and racism (call it what it is) - Len van Heerden |

Xenophobia 19/05/2008 09:19
V. eloquently said, Lucas. Unfortunately, this message will not reach those who need to hear it.The fact is that if you can leave your country with nothing but the clothes on your back and manage to make a success of your life, own a shop etc in SA - why can locals who have the same opportunities not do the same? why do ppl sit around and expect govt. to provide them with everything when immigrants show that in most cases hard work and a little tenacity get you far? - VG |

Uncontrolled borders and incompetent govt the start 19/05/2008 09:24
of the problem. Our government has allowed the border patrols to rot. They have left borders open and uncontrolled as thus our country has too many people in it from the north. Also, allowing Zim to implode exascerbated the problem. Zim should be absorbing the immigrants for us. Perhaps these mobs should be reminded Luthuli House/Govt is responsible for this mess and vote in somebody else to sort out our borders. - Zoo Keeper |

enough 19/05/2008 09:24
i dont agree with this mayhem that is currently happening in our country. these immigrants did not leave their countries cos they wanted to.they came here cos they were looking for a better life. in the days of apartheid south african went in exile to these nighouring countries and they were never subjected to this kind of treatment instead they were given shelter and the skills that they gonna need when they gonna need when they came back. some of the immigrants are qualified professionals... - SELWYN |

David Bullard was not right, not all South Africans support or even engage in this barbaric action. I would like to think that the majority have condemned it and will continue to condemn it. Thanks Lucas 19/05/2008 09:31
It was a beautifully written letter. It is a pity that the politicians (DA, ANC, IFP, etc etc) all just "condemn" these killings and riots - what the hell is that going to do ???? Good point Herbert what are the SANDF actually doing ???? Why are they not patrolling the borders if we do not have enough border patrol police ??? We are not at war what could they possibly be doing everyday ? The only war we are involved in is the one rising up inside our country killing innocent people. - stack |

SA Problem 19/05/2008 09:37
Empathy, the cornerstone of emotional intelligence, is not part of the SA psyche. The violent environment which cultured the SA mindset for generations, is unrivalled in the world, thus qualifying this country as the violent crime champion of the world. As long as you have golf resorts bordered by squatter camps, this status quo will continue. - critical thinker |

This was bound to happen at some point. 19/05/2008 09:37
If the pie is getting smaller and there are more people to share, then you're bound to find these levels of violence at some form or shape. What country has no border control where over 5 million illegal's are allowed. Given our rate of unemployment, this was bound to happen and recent economic situation does not help either. We may have foreigners, but not at this rate, it was a disaster awaiting to happen in any country not matter how civilised the people. - Libembe |

Another point 19/05/2008 09:44
While one has sympathy with the victims of this savagery, we need to keep sight of the bigger picture. The reason that the Zimbabweans refugees are here is such numbers is exactly bcause Mbeki and his henchmen has refused to intervene meaningfully in the Zimbabe crisis (what crisis?), and have gone out of their way to prop up their fellow dictator. With this sort of sick foreign policy, small wonder that refugees keep coming and that this produces a backlash. - Johan Strijdom |

Mbeki and ethnic cleansing 19/05/2008 09:47
The ethnic cleansing we are witnesing results directly from Mbeki's "quiet diplomacy". Prof Blarney Piesang Pityana, that well known mouthpiece for the discredited Mbeki, is on public record as saying that this is an expression of the "African rensaissance". Until this sick mindset is changed, we wil continue the slide into the Heart of Darkness. - Sel |

Questions to the ANC leaders: Where you dealing in drugs in exile? where you involved in criminal activity(remember Jeppestown massacre)? Where you roaming the streets or where you in camps? Back to John Camp 19/05/2008 09:49
I am not advocating viloence, or rape of innocents. The police should not have to serve foreigners here illegally. They are here to protect citizens, South African citizens. Not illegal immigrants who are responsible for robberies, rapes theft, hijacking, drug-trafficking and other atrocities. Foreigners who are not happy here must go home. They can make changes in their countries. Leave South Africa to and for South Africans. - Mark |

Sad really that a country which will be hosting the 2010 world cup, has such insensitivities. Can SA build those stadia without migrant labour, the mines thrive on migrant labour. Mbeki knows if Zimbos, go home SA is in trouble. Your white professionals are leaving, the zimbabwe professionals are filling the gap.

Mbeki ...? 19/05/2008 09:55
Mbeki is busy thinking about the conspiracies going through at ANC rather than addressing this issue @ hand. This has got out of hand, a state of emergency shud be declared, and the army called in. After the foreigners it will be the Zuma and Mbeki loyalists killing one another i.e Zulus and Xhosas. Mbeki is killing this country, he is getting back @ Zuma. Zuma will b pres next year he wil be the 1 who must solve this, n this wil make his work difficult, n we wud say he is not fit for office. - Mbuzi |

SANDF etc 19/05/2008 09:55
What are they doing everyday ? Why are they not patrolling borders and now the affected townships? it just doesnt make sense tha the SAP have to deal with this as well as all of the other crimes taking place. The crminals have found the perfect scapegoat and are milking it for all it's worth. Problem 19/05/2008 09:57
The problem is that the Government of South Africa is trying too hard to govern this country politically with their hearts, in stead of MANAGING the country with their heads and making sound practical decisions, which may appear unpopular in the short term, but will have a much more positive effect in the long run! - cedb00 |

For those clamoring for the Army to be sent in, what do you expect them to do?

The army should be called in now. The way our army don't have any work to do they kill each other at the base in Mafikeng. What must we do to make the Pres see that there is a crisis in SA? I think they should be a toll number 4 the army cos someone up there is not doing his job. Armegeddon?? 19/05/2008 10:08
Lucas your article is heart felt, sad, scary and dark. Uunfortunately as you have said, the South African tribes will turn on each other more violently. They have always barley tolerated each other, but the violence was kept in check, it is now going to boil over and we will become just like any other African country with multiple tribes - genicide. Why is it that blacks South Africans are so full of hatred and intolerance for any other race/tribe? - Karen |

Power division. 19/05/2008 10:33
This has to do with Power division between the ruling parties (ANC). Zuma has an influence on attacks. He once, said if he becomes a president all illegal immigrant should be arrested. The Zulu cultures are people who are doing these attacks. Zuma he is a Zulu and Mbeki is a Xhosa. Power division result on xenophobic attacks and discrimination amongst blacks.
If Zuma become a President, the Zulu's and Xhosa's will fight each other. Actually there would be a civil war in South Africa. These could result on removal of 2010 world cup to other countries.

Africans should boycot 2010 world cup!! 19/05/2008 10:34
If these xenophobic attacks continue I urge African countries to boycot the 2010 soccer world cup. Maybe in that way ordinary South Africans like MARK in this forum, will realise that IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS afterall. As a foreigner I really feel pity for the poor South Africans, because the truth is that nothing comes on a silver platter. You just need to follow poverty trends in the USA to realise that GOVERNMENTS can't offer you everthing or anything for that matter. - Wiri |

Well put Lucas but ... 19/05/2008 10:34
I stay in Diepsloot and have seen people who cause all this trouble. Most of them are young, unemployed, obviously impoverished, have to share the scarce resources such as land with tens of thousands of foreigners, disillusioned, trained mobilisers and organisers. These are people who have been trained to fight for their land. They are using the same strategy that they were taught to use by their parties. The solution is to untrain/demobilise them. Educate them. - JR |

EVIL 19/05/2008 10:37
My beautiful country is drowning in Evil..it is everywhere. What is evel? Killing is evil, lying is evil, slandering is evil, abuse is evil, gossip is evil, envy is evil, HATRED is evil, to cling to false doctrine is evil; all these things are evil. I hear your point about President Mbeki's lack of action being the cause, though I am confused as to what action he could have taken that would have caused the Zimbos to remain their country? at the end of the day, one would have to imagine that Zimbabweans would have had to take the lead in their own freedom, rather than depending entirely on one person. We fought for SA, and Zimbos should do for Zim - L van Heerden |

Youth with no direction 19/05/2008 10:41
There are lots and lots of youth sitting idle in our townships and villages. Most drop out of school for no good reason and still expect to find success out there.
Then find out how tough the job market is if one does not have any skills to sell and by then they are in their 20s and is difficult to return to school.
And the frustration just build and they will take it out on any one who (women, foreigners etc).

The fact is that less than 5000 ANC cadres went into exile in African countries and yes they did not take jobs away from locals, they did not engage in crime in their countries and they did not compete for jobs and resources with their hosts, but SADF attacked often killing innocent Africans in their search for "terrorists"
Cannot justify the inhumane treatment metred out to our "visitors" no matter how their actions have made this country unsafe - LvH |

In respect to 19/05/2008 10:45
your sentence."If we don't stop this now the agents of terror will come for you."We have been terrorised for years and are still being terrorised now Lucas.Reports say it's bands of "youths" doing this or inciting it.Now who was it that said they are going to make this country ungovernable?Which "liberation" movement killed their own on suspision of treason within the borders of other countries.Who are these agents of terror?I share your consternation. - psycobabble |

What is wrong with S.A. 19/05/2008 10:45
I never agreed with the influx of illegal immigrants to the country,as I believed like may South Africans, that these guys are responsible for many crimes commited in the country but recent events have proved to me who the real criminals are.BURNING PEOPLE,HACKING PEOPLE,do sane normal people do this?Damn the government, damn them to hell.... - nWo |

Africans should boycot 2010 world cup!! 19/05/2008 10:46
- Wiri |

Good article, but............ 19/05/2008 10:46
Good article Lucas, and I agree 200%. The only thing that really bothers me about this whole xenophobia thing is the attention it's getting. How many people have been killed? 20 or so? For this the cabinet has special meetings and a task force is formed. But 150 white farmers get killed every year, and 1400 have been killed since 94. I don't see the same outrage. I don't see special task forces. Why? - CJR |

LUCAS 19/05/2008 10:47
Only the wise and sane can now help the people. Your piece is amazing. If only everyone could see SA through your eyes....LOVE CAN CONQUER ALL. All this hatred will bury SA in blood. We were all made by one God, we are supposed to love one another. The hatred is palpable, horrible and heartbreaking. To all the Zimbabweans, and others, my deep, sincere apologies for the pain my fellow SA'cans are inflicting upon you. We must have a day of prayer. Please. - Alicia |

I can hear you saying that cops should not help rape victims who are drunk or wear mini-skirts. Point is, that is a lousy point. Yes, investigate the cause of the attacks, but also arrest and deal harshly with the riffraff - L van Heerden |

Wrong to hire illegals 19/05/2008 10:49
It?s wrong to hire illegal immigrants. It?s against the law. That is where the problem starts. Check the construction industry. This whole thing that foreigners are great workers is a myth. They are willing to work for anything which South Africans, giving their history are just not prepared to do. I blame the employers and the government for showing no care to South Africans. The people are Gatvol. - Tebzano |

Crumbling Beloved Country 19/05/2008 10:53
You ask us to live in peace in SA where our political leaders one min proclaim no problem in Zim, enforcing no control over borders, then yelped a bit when the townships are burning while on the flanks a voice blames 3rd forces, & all the while no pausible voice over the world that shipment of arms reached Zim afterall and with whose help? And after all this confusion, Mantu holds conferences that anti-aids drugs is poison & should be exposed? Our leaders must give us some answers! - Loraine |

Government to blame 19/05/2008 10:57
I must admit that the government that I help to put in power has failed many South Africans who put it in power. Now we are seeing the results of the mistakes that they have been making for the past 15 years. Electricity, railway police, teachers training colleges and the education system, Dept. of horror(home)affairs and now the foreigners issue. We don't have secured borders, we have failed to erect refugee camps to deal with Zim crisis. Gvt has failed both refugees and South Africans - To the point |

Corruption, Greed, power, 19/05/2008 10:57
The world felt sorry for blacks during apartheid but now the world is looking at South Africans shamefully, shacking their heads. Blacks were recognised as heroes during apartheid, but now they are just nothing. Blacks had the world at their feet but have now proven that they are not so great as they think they are. - vanilla |

@L van Heerden 19/05/2008 10:59
I did not say "that cops should not help rape victims who are drunk or wear mini-skirts". I aid that the cops should be here helping South Africans, who belong here, were born here, and need help here. Not to help foreigners who are here illegally, irrespective of what they are wearing. They do not pay taxes, and do not deserve assistance. If there is anythibg legal about their being here, then they should be or could be helped. They do not belong here. - Mark |

We should tolorate ilegals because?? 19/05/2008 11:01
Their countries provided the ANC terrorists with exile back in the day? Sure ANC supporters might find that to be an excuse , But not everyone in the country is ANC. I never supported anc and never will why should I tolorate foreign criminals because the ANC "owes" Them ? Sorry I wont !!! - tiekies |

Good can still prevail 19/05/2008 11:01
This is a lovely article Lucas. Well done. There are enough good people in South Africa to turn our country around. "Good" is still the majority. We have to do more than type angry comments on a website though ... Moral regeneration is absolutely pivotal. - Lee |

Provide way forward than barking condemnations like ANC leaders and the truth is some foreigners think all 4 millions of them have refugee status which we know is not correct. 2. How do you explain a RDP house allocated to a Malawian whereas ordinary South Africans stay in a shack. Wake and smell the coffee, JUNKIE!!! - Tomas |
