It would be really easy to give a knowing nod that says, "I told you so".

I could sit in my office and point at the carnage whilst mumbling something about 2010 and what foreigners can expect. I could blame someone for not doing something sooner but, I suppose, that would just be too South African and, right now, being South African is something we should all be ashamed of.

Burning brightly our hatred, our intolerance, our hooliganism, our poor example to the rest of Africa. Like the unfortunate soul on the cover of several newspapers this morning, our illusions of a greater, grander society - the so-called Rainbow Nation - is going up in a cloud of belligerent smoke.

Rampant our rage against any and everyone deemed not "worthy" of being a South African, including citizens of foreign birth, who now own businesses that offer services and employment in areas of conflict.

Isn't it an absurd term to use in this day and age? "Areas of conflict", where gangs kill, set fire to human beings, rampage, damage, rob, maim. What a picture we make today, the ashes of another weekend's disgrace hanging thick in the air. What irony that we now resemble the war-stricken zones many of the haunted refugees come from.

Soon we will have military convoys snaking down our roads to force compliance with law and order. Masses will throw stones, fire weapons, burn tyres, barricade roads, gather to vent their anger at any and everyone because this, people, has gone way beyond being disgruntled with the presence of foreign nationals.

    Unacceptable behaviour

It is the acid tongues of ill-intent and misguided beliefs that fuel this free-for-all, this abandonment of morality and the freedoms guaranteed by the world's most progressive national constitution. The empty promises of elections past are manifesting in no uncertain terms. The inaction of South Africa in dealing with crises upon crises on our borders has now, finally, come full circle and are we fighting the battles within that should have been fought in the annals of foreign governments long ago.

We are witnessing what a complete absence of effective national welfare and social upliftment programmes can lead to. We have not educated our people on morality and acceptable behaviour. We have failed to make clear examples of those transgressing the rule of law. We have allowed this beast to its own devices, to grow impatient, angry and disillusioned for years and, now, we are going to have to crack a monumental whip to beat it back into submission.

What a sad state of affairs. This is not what we wanted. This is not how it is meant to be.

This is not the dream that Nelson Mandela spoke of; the "Africa that is at peace with itself". I think today there is not a single one of us who can truthfully say that we've done all we can to make that dream a reality.

I think - today - we should feel ashamed: As Africans, as citizens, as people.

South Africa is crying - who will dry her tears?

      Africa
    19/05/2008 15:04
Well put - but this is Africa my friend. I read with unbelief the comment that xenophobia was un-african. Now what whould you call Rwanda, Uganda, Zimbabwe,Liberia, Ivory Coast, Sudan, Inkatha vs ANC/UDF? I could carry on but would run out of space. Rape and pilliage of those who have worked for their success is the way of the continent. Corruption and nepotism the standard form of government. Get used to it or leave. - James

      Hope has left the building...
    19/05/2008 15:06
Disgusting, shameful, savagery, brutality, barbaric. I could continue until tomorrow morning listing how I feel about this situation. This is more then just immigrants, this is yet another African country showing the rest of the world that Africa really is about a bunch of savages running around chopping up people. All I can say is it took a little longer then other African countries but hey here we are! - Disgusted

    19/05/2008 15:08
I like many SAns are at a loss for words. This is more then a few criminal elements, not when you look at the participation of these gangs attacking immigrants. This is just showing the rest of the world that we are indeed part of the savagery that is Africa... - Point Blank

      Africa ditto
    19/05/2008 15:16
I think James is about as close to the realities of this continent as anyone is going to get. Truth hurts but the facts are there for all to see. The whole Colonialisation argument just doesnt seem to measure up in the face of this kind of violence - perhaps its more an inherent nature thing. - Stryker

      To all black South Africans...
    19/05/2008 15:20
...you must voice your disapproval about this xenophobic attacks. If whites say something, we are greeted with "but you dont live in the townships, you dont know how it is" or "it is because of your apartheid that we are in this mess" Please black brothers and sisters, South Africa need you... - South African

Africa remains tribal, regardless of how far SA has come...
    19/05/2008 15:25
we don't have enough people in the military and police force anymore to control this, thanks to yet more short-sightedness from our leaders. How long before this turns against 'European' immigrants? I hope this violent behaviour is restricted to a few but this mob justice and savagery has a nasty habit of raging through a populus overnight. Africa is riddled with examples. Is this another case of our venerable leader exercising 'quiet diplomacy' in the hope of solving yet another crisis?? - Agnes

      Safety
    19/05/2008 15:25
It's not even a discussion I wanted to get involved in, but living in the Northern Suburbs it's hard not being touched by this. Living just off Witkoppen, I heard police cars racing between Diepsloot, Kya Sands and Zandspruit the whole of this weekend. It?s hard to understand the pain and plight of the people that are affected by our in-hospitability. At 23h00 last night a helicopter came over our house for the umpteenth. I felt nervous sitting in a real home in a complex. I can only imagine the fear of the people living in these settlements. - Johann

      Deja Vu,Brandon

or just our reality here?Having the worlds most progressive constitution seems in juxtopposition to the regressive nature of our "society" at this time. - psycobabble

      Point Blank - LOGIC
    19/05/2008 15:54
Your logic does not make sense to me - South Africa has over 45 mill citizens who are mostly hard working and peace loving people and with your reasoning you blame all of South Africa for the irresponsible actions of a few 1000 hooligans and label all of us as savages. There is more savagery in bombing innocent women and children with the likes of the USA, UK and Israel who bombs playgrounds churches and civilian houses and all of this they justify as a war on terror - colin

Things are getting out of control...
    19/05/2008 15:58
While the govt appoints a 'task team'.The image of a man burning alive and being extingushed as if he's not a human being is just too much. Why are SAfricans so violent? Whether it's a march for higher salaries, service delivery there is always violence. - Godfrey

      Tears
    19/05/2008 16:00
No matter where you live, this gruesome, unbelievable atrocity was in most living rooms last night and this morning. The onlookers with moronic grins and laughter on their faces. Words cannot describe the horror, sadness and emptiness I felt. My country! The black scum who perpetrate such sadism must be wiped from the face of the earth. Police, shoot to kill. All because they are lazy, want free handouts, and r insanely jealous of what others have achieved. The world is watching. SA will die. - Alicia

      African History X
    19/05/2008 16:03
There is a rift between this nation and its children. Disenfranchised youth are easily sold the non sensical rhetoric that fuels irrational hatred - and brought together by this hatred, they act in the only way that makes sense to them. Children form the foundation of every nation - when a foundation crumbles, the building soon follows. I hope that one day, our country will learn to value the most important resource it has. - Plagu3

      Colin...
    19/05/2008 16:05
Shut the hell up....WE allowed this to happen,WE allowed 1000 people to disgrace this country,WE stood by and did/doing nothing to stop it.WE ARE SOUTH AFRICANS.The world is looking at US.Also this is not Iraq,or israel,WE cant compare. If u dont agree with whats happening there YOU can go throw some stones at tanks in palestine while ther rest of US watch OUR country burn... - nWo

Violence was never the answer to anything
    19/05/2008 16:14

      Goverment not qualified
    19/05/2008 16:18
Think about what the real issues in SA are and then look at the burning issues govt decided to tackle instead. We have shiny new names for streets, cities and provinces, we have a soccer world cup, we have a big fancy jet for the prez, sweet new submarines, ships and fighter jets, the best anti-tobacco legislation, a jstice system and police force that should all be behind bars, failing power grid, and i think we've just begun to scratch the surface. - ian e

As we walk in the shadow of death....
    19/05/2008 16:31
Lured by appeals from South African government for skilled labour(and we we are skilled) to prepare and develop South Africa for 2010, we turned our backs on Zimbabwe , a country on the throes of economic meltdown...a country led by a former revolutionary- turned -tyrannt, we find ourselves walking in shadows of death. For how long do we continue to run? Perhaps its time we take a stand and stopped running and re-trace our steps and confront evil anywhere and in particular back home.. - Frank Sinodo

      SADNESS
    19/05/2008 16:37
How sad it all is, it is Unfathomable and as you say unacceptable, I wonder will Africa ever learn? Nice one BB. - LH

      inherent nature?
    19/05/2008 16:42
I have noticed that a lot of people seem to blame this violence on some sort of inate savage mentality that they ascribe to African people. This is the worst kind of generalisation and narrow mindedness. This kind of labelling gives credence to racist idiots like jon qwelane and certain bloggers on this site who lump all whites together as racist whingers. Xenophobia and the violence that results from this is occuring all over the world becauset of the skewed distribution of wealth and the increasing scarcity of resources. Africa doesnt have the monopoly on unspeakable violence. People seem to conveniently forgot the atrocities commited by people all over the world (the balkans, the kmer rouge- the list is endless). Bottom line is that humans can be downright evil- whatever the colour or creed. - grant

      Violence
    19/05/2008 16:43
The sad part is how easily the situation in Southern Africa could have been the opposite.Mozambique,Zimbabwe,Botswana,Namibie,SA together have all the qualities to dominate on the International playing fields with farming, minerals, coal, mining and the greatest of all,Tourism.Cross country training on these fields would have caused tremendous uplifment and progression.Repairing the Power Staions that are run down and ineffective would have benefited all countries. If only we had real Leaders. - Willie

      To all black South Africans??
    19/05/2008 16:55
What sort of plonker wrote that? Stop living in the past and try to stand together with your countryman to sort out what is going on. Instead you continue blaming it on apartheid. An old saying goes "As long as you live in the past you do not have a future. Wake up. Chop. - Leigh

south africa is just plain lawless
    19/05/2008 16:58
Due to cable theft, half the country is without telephone lines and have to resort to cell phone and web technology. Due to incompetence Eskom is unable to provide electricity to the country. Due to negligence, our water supply is fast becoming dangerously polluted. The xenophobia is just one more thing in this country that makes me take back my scathing words to those fleeing SA. Who can blame them anymore. If I could. I would too. - pink

    19/05/2008 17:10
Good article. I would like to also thank Zuma for all the public performances of "Umshini Wami" and the ANC for working so hard over the last 15 years to enrich themselves and bring us to this. What you sew you shall reap. - Rian

      Victory for quite diplomacy??
    19/05/2008 17:28
As always superbly timed and written. The facts cannot be disputed &, soos gewoonlik, the normal protagonists are gloriously quiet when the questions get too tough. Say a prayer will you for our innocent brothers and sisters who are needlessly suffering because of ineptitude. I am indeed ashamed. - yt1021

Is this what is meant by
    19/05/2008 17:32
An African solution to an African problem? These scenes remind me of Apartheid scenes. My haven't we come far. We should be as ashamed today as we were 20 years ago. South Africa is burning and the fuel is corruption and misinformation. - Jas

      Shocking publicity in London
    19/05/2008 17:33
I have recently been horrified by what is going on in my beautiful country SA. I walked into work this morning in London only to be questioned on the barbaric behaviour by the people in the settlements. Not all the Zimbabweans are criminals. Yes the government is to blame as our border controll is pathetic. Please stop. South africa is going to lose what it fought for during the Apartheid, Dont let the world judge us Mr Mbeki stand up for your people and protect the inoccent Foreigners. - Sean

      Police Action
    19/05/2008 17:38
The police are usless. Virtually the whole management structure are political appointees who would not know how to solve a crime if it happened in front of them. The ones that are left from the old days have turned into yessmen trying to keep their jobs. If the apartheid police wanted to stop the riots in 1976 they could have - the SAP never used tank guns and missiles in the townships. Today no-one respects the police cause they know they are useless and ineffective - penny

      Sad Day For South Africa
    19/05/2008 17:59
This is a truly sad week for South Africans...all people included my black counterparts. We are all brothers and sisters on this continent and its a shame that the respect and dignity has been lost throughout. What about the rights and freedom of people? Have we forgotten all about it? What has become of us? Sad, very very sad. A man being burnt to death? I have never in my life... - Alain

      To Leigh
    19/05/2008 21:25
I'm not living in the past..read my comment carefully and try to understand...I'm white and trying to say that the blacks in the townships do not trust the white people. - South African

      ??????
    20/05/2008 00:01
I have seen war. I watch in horror when I watched TV today. When will any non black face be declared the target as happened in Uganda, Congo......? History repeats itself over and over. Mobs cannot be controlled. a rubber bullet means nothing, only gets them fired up again. Preventing mobs from becoming angry is the answer! Our dear ANC, in government, has not listened for some time and got the answers from "the mob" in a very articulated way. - Benzo

      Maybe...
    20/05/2008 07:34
FIFA should take 2010 away from us. Just to show that lawlessness, violence, human rights abuse & an ineffective government will not be tolerated in the world. - Werner

      Sean
    20/05/2008 07:49
Sean instead of living your life in another country condemning what is happening here from your high horse, come back and make a difference join the already short maned police force or better yet our army. You have no right to say its bad media in London, come and stand by your country until then stay in London and shut the hell up. - Tersia
