On Saturday we had to take our Malawian workers home after they spent the day working for us in Glen Austin, Midrand. There were South African locals posted on all the streets in Glen Austin accosting foreigners (who have valid passports and work permits) and attacking them on their way home and also taking their passports.

Our workers, who don't even live in the township, were terrified. They had tears in their eyes. They have good jobs here and are being persecuted. They are wonderful people, but they are living in fear. They say that in Ivory Park there have been a lot of attacks and this is not in the news.

This violence together with other horrific crimes, which is especially terrible in Midrand, is very under-reported in the media. We are leaving the area, as it is too dangerous. What used to be beautiful agricultural holdings is now a killing field at night and many have abandoned their homes and gone overseas - white people and foreigners alike.

The hatred and violence is unbearable. We had two armed gang robberies last year and scores of other terrifying events, including hijacking attempts and being fired upon by criminals fleeing police by running through our plots. It is a living nightmare.

We lost some of our beautiful horses, plots and both our cars and all our belongings due to crime. We have no way to continue our lives and now our lovely wonderful workers live in fear of their lives.

In Midrand the real statistics of violent gang robbery, which the police did nothing about, was huge with nearly every household being affected many times in one year.

Many of the people from African countries, like Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, are wonderful, honest people and work here legally.

Living in terror is not just a statistic and living in fear of your life is not just a photo - it is real and way too awful. I love this country and the people, but we are now leaving SA as our lives were destroyed by the crime. We employed a lot of people - local and foreign - who are now unemployed because we suffered violent crime in SA.

When we went to report the case, the police told us that robbing white people is not a crime, its only redistribution of wealth and laughed at us even though I was badly injured. There are many things going on that are not accurately reported on. The crime situation in SA is way out of control.

      What sensationalism in your article
    19/05/2008 15:08
We do have a problem currently of Xenophobic attacks in our country, BUT your article is sensationalising the problem. Go well. - Z

      Be proactive ...
    19/05/2008 15:34
"...In Midrand the real statistics of violent gang robbery, which the police did nothing about, was huge with nearly every household being affected many times in one year..." I have a problem with comments like these, while i am not down-playing your suffering due to crime. I fail to understand why, as an affected community, you guys don't come together and organise a policing forum. And "donner" anyone caught misbehaving in your community. Just my two-Zim-dollars' worth ... - shabir ... the shake master

      Xenophobia
    19/05/2008 15:50
Extreme xenophobia is not new in South Africa. The rape and murder of foreign nationals has been tolerated/encouraged for much too long. I recall that African immigrants were thrown off moving trains enroute to Soweto in the mid-90s. Immigrant Africans suffer a lot of animosity at their work places, and in public offices. We may bury our heads in the sand when a foreign- born or white woman is raped, or another murdered, but what goes around comes around. - Thai Chief

Shame SA, our Image is damaged!!
    19/05/2008 16:13
I doubt if this is xenophobia, certain tribes are under threat (Tsonga, Venda & N.sotho). It is really shame, why do we attack people from neighboring countries, whether they are illegal or legal immigrants, this is should not happen in our country. The very same people are criticizing what is happening in Zimbabwe, but we are practicing the very same thing ?beating and killing?. I also doubt if our country has law enforcement, our government is not doing enough to stop this. This was supposed to be contained when it started. Where are the SA police & solders!!! - Maanda

      ILLEGAL IIMIGRANTS
    19/05/2008 16:18
The govt creatd the problem by allowing such a large number of illegal immigrnats into the country, they should deal with it. It won't stop, what you will see is the same thing spreading across the whole country. - Sheperd Biniza

How do you know an immigrant is illegal?
    19/05/2008 16:38
We rejoiced when FIFA pronounced an African World Cup. The South African economy has boomed in the last 10 years because of expansion in Africa. We need to import teachers, engineers, managers, IT experts & other skilled people for South Africa to continue to grow. And now we just watch in horror as rampant xenophobia takes centre stage, with the brutally savage attacks on some of thse people! We must act now to save our civilization...but government has a duty to lead. - Thai Chief

      Why
    20/05/2008 07:56
I see on the news that alot of foreigners are seeking refuge at police stations and churches etc..Why does the police not then deport all of those that are here illegally! - nicky
