These days, people willing to improve themselves, be it at their career or job, be it on their home or car, or even on their person or appearance, they are prone to being either killed, hijacked or raped because of it, and having their possessions stolen in the process.

That is, should the government not tax such a soul to death before the criminals get their sights set on them!

Back in the day, when I started working at the CPA as a youngster, (they were prepared to pay for my studies) I was told by older colleagues to go slowly, and not to work too hard or fast, lest I show them up. No, really, that is a fact.

They would even go so far as to berate me semi-publically amongst a group of them when I was deemed occasionally to have outdone my minimum requirement. I found that I couldn't carry on in that vein, as I became bored. So I worked at a quicker pace and filed my work secretly, while studying at night!

My seniors did notice it though. I was promoted, and my older lazier colleagues stayed behind. They continued to moan about the salary though, and are probably still there today.

    Happening again

The same thing is happening in the townships. The Xenophobia sweeping the country is directly attributable to the fact that our South African workers want jobs, not work. They want money, leave, sick leave, coffee and benefits, but they don't want the work that is associated with employment.

So they go on the red T-shirt rampage, toyi-toying and shouting slogans, killing barbarically with flaming tyre and machete those who would earn their bread by the sweat of their brow, be they immigrants or not.

They don't care that should they work hard and understand more about the big picture, they can move on to bigger and better things - which means more money and a better lifestyle.

Incidentally, I know of immigrants from Zimbabwe who are not only trustworthy, but are office-presentable when they arrive for work as a garden worker! A good friend had one ask for work as a "house-boy". When he questioned this man as to what a "house-boy" would do, he said "everything".

    Insult to injury

And that is just what he does do! From the garden to the house - beautifully. He is so trustworthy that 5 years on, he now even has his own house keys. This erstwhile fellow is paid well today, but lives in fear of his life should the red-eyed, fire starting masses find him out though?

To add insult to injury, the immigrants' possessions are then stolen by the murdering insane mob. Shops are plundered, and innocents are set upon.

It's insane that we're being directly or indirectly ruled by a bunch of incompetent, barbaric, murderous, louts who are prepared to shout and burn all in the name of entitlement, whether they're in govt, the ANCYL, or just a member of the chanting masses.

We need the death penalty, Mr Mbeki or Mr Zuma, or whoever calls the shots. Our people understand that kind of language. It is all that we can do to ensure the safety of all our people, including our visitors.

      So True
    19/05/2008 15:24
I could not have said it better. I have relatives and friends who suddenly are looking for a job when the see me visit them. They do not even have a CV ready. The minute I leave they go back to sitting around with no purpose in life - Olivia

      Great article until.......
    19/05/2008 15:24
You spoiled a absolutely brilliant piece ending with Mr. M &Z.Screw them both and everything they stand for. They will not bring back the death penalty, forget it. I'm not proudly "South African" the country has been turned into a shithole. The rest of your piece is great. Well said! - Dumas

      10 out of 10
    19/05/2008 15:27
You are absolutly 100% correct. The death penalty will stop all violence because everyone is afraid to die, even those killing! DEATH IS ALL THEY UNDERSTAND AND DEATH IS ALL THAT WILL CALM THEM, AS EASY AS IT IS FOR THEM TO KILL AS EASY SHOULD IT BE FOR THEM TO GET KILLED. - Nastassia

There for all to see Vinny
    19/05/2008 15:30
When one looks at the pics of this violence one can see the intensity with which these criminals are out to just to kill and loot. The world knows about this too, see:The Australian,The New Zealand Herald,Washington Post,New York Times,The Gaurdian (UK),TimesOline(UK).The Toronto Star etc.Not good publicity!. - psycobabble

      Well Said
    19/05/2008 15:31
Well said. You have echoed what I believe many are thinking - Nadine

      Not only a SAn phenomenon
    19/05/2008 15:40
SAns are highly regarded overseas as being hard working and with a high work ethic-often in contrast to the local populations. It is not easy to get a work permit overseas and when SAns do manage to do so,they value their jobs and do more than the minimum, often creating jealousy and negativity towards them. But this kind of barbaric reaction seems to be unique to our country.Does anyone know why? - DW

We want jobs, but not work
    19/05/2008 15:41
You are SO right. Another example you can give is people who get a job at a supermarket and look at you funny... Do you know that our people in the township don't know that you can study part time. And when you do give them this information, they don't follow it up?? Next thing you know there is a baby on the way.. What are we going to do? It looks like the 80's out there?? All Mr Mbeki and Mr Zuma is 'call against the violence'.. people are dying. It's scary. - Puse

      Xenophobia
    19/05/2008 15:42
looks to me like you are a racist. people need time to learn the civilization that is the new SouthAfrica. Why is it that you complain about what the blacks do and not complain about Arthur Brown?? He is a criminal. - Capie

      Xenophobia
    19/05/2008 15:46
As a foreigner myself I would like to ask the South African masses especially to those that are looting, killing and harassing the foreign black Nationals. How do you expect us or the world to support the 2010 World cup dream? I am certain much has been invested towards this dream which is an African dream - to say! - But seemingly we are having a grand nightmare? If these foreigners are criminals, why are criminals punishing them? Where is the ?LAW?? Is there law in South Africa anyway? - Elisha Niyonizeye

      Brilliant
    19/05/2008 15:47
The only problem is that no matter how much we speak write or publish it never gets noticed and nothing is ever done about it. - moby

      Entitlement
    19/05/2008 15:59
Vinny, you rock! As long as people do not realise that you need to put in the effort to get ahead, they never will. Now they blame others for doing better than them. Well done, good point! - Jimmy Jackpot

      @ Capie
    19/05/2008 16:01
What is happening out there is NOT "civilization" in anyone's dictionary. It is barbaric. What Arthur Brown did was TOTALLY unacceptable and we HAVE criticised him in other forums.I don't see what he has to do with the current situation of people killing so-called criminals in an equally criminal fashion.Do you justify this? Are you one of the CRIMINALS slaughtering people at will out there? - DW

      Law?
    19/05/2008 16:02
Yes there is law in this country, they busy protecting criminals against inhumane and unconstitutional treatment by police during an arrest after they have been arrested for torturing, raping and killing someone! - Point Blank

      Capie is the racist numbskull
    19/05/2008 16:13
Artur Brown (white) and Zacob Zuma (Black) are both accused of crimes. Both will (hopefully) have their day in court. Neither is yet a "criminal" until PROVEN guilty. You are the racist for picking on a person due to his skin colour only. - Dries

      What next...? White,Indian,Shangaan,Xhosa,Chinese....
    19/05/2008 16:32
At the moment the variable is citizenship but as we see through the history of the world this is how the genocides / Serbia /Congo etc start.I love S.A. but should I start packing for Canada ? - Kamen

      Punish them
    19/05/2008 16:54
Cancel the 2010 World cup! No one is going to come anymore for fear of attacks. - gavin Schilder

      Work makes Free
    19/05/2008 16:58
Gotta agree with you Vinny - but this is not new -a job is not the same as work to many - but simply a pay packet without any obligations and resonsibilities in many lazy minds. I blame the government for this sort of mindset - what else, when people see how the ANC fatcats enrich themselves whilst doing almost nothing for the ordinary oke in the townships? This current violence is criminal-inspired, as a result of the kid gloves approach to criminality by the ANC and the useless SAPS! - Stewart Wood

      hear hear Gavin!
    19/05/2008 17:03
I hope you're wrong. But I dont think you are. Who the hell would come here?!!! This is as bad as the 80's with the faction fighting and necklacing in the townships! - pink

      @ Capie
    19/05/2008 17:08
So you reckon ''people need time to learn the civilisation that is the new South Africa'' Are you admitting that these savages are uncivilised? Seems like you are the racist. You probably condone Brown - the thief - getting raped while in police custody. You bring shame on us. - Filemon

      @ Capie
    19/05/2008 17:17
Because the mobs are raping and killing at an alarming rate right now. Brown is an @ssh#le but he is not perpertrating genocide. Condeming violence has nothing to do with race. - Rian

      What do these fools want?
    19/05/2008 17:18
Do they want all foreigners to take their money and leave? Do we shut down our businesses and put more bloody South Africans out of work? Do we take our resources, skills and the opportunities we create for South Africans, and move to more progressive and forward-thinking countries like Mozambique, Botswana, etc.? South Africa is heading the same way as Ruwanda, Congo, Angola, etc. It's time to show the world South Africa's REAL democracy! - Zimbabwean Refugee

      Hello Capie
    19/05/2008 17:18
Hello Capie. Bye-Bye Capie. I think that is the longest conversation you will understand. - Jan Nel

      Agree with Gavin
    19/05/2008 17:23
I for one will now actively campaign against the 2010 World Cup - not in the vain hope of having it cancelled, but to contribute towards it being a flop and punishing the lazy, barbaric South Africans for their murderous ways, and their politicians for condoning violent crime. - Anti-South African

      BBC News/ Google News
    19/05/2008 21:17
We are 3rd on the list in the USA and BBC news headlines. "Thousands flee jhb" etc. "State of Emergency" being called for. Absolutely pathetic and sensationalist descriptions make it sound as if the entire country has a bunch of angry mobs running riot. We wont have to do anything to cancel 2010. There's no way its going to happen now. Think of the debt we are going to sit with from all the development that has taken place in 'preparation' for 2010! - pink

      @pink
    20/05/2008 07:00
You are so right, bye-bye 2010.... its a matter of time fifa catches a wake up that we cannot host the 2010. The headlines on BBC / Google News will be "1000s of Tourists murdered in first week of 2010"....... - guess

      lost hope
    20/05/2008 08:03
Yip, as it stands now, I have lost hope for this country. We live in a society free of consequence, that's the only 'freedom' we have. Safrica's ppl have shown the world their colour. While it may be a small percentage of us causing the trouble, they have the voice which the rest of the world is hearing. And then there's the pathetic 'quiet' voice of our government which is just as embarassing. - Keifie

      Another reason
    20/05/2008 08:38
You've hit the nail on the head with this article. Frankly, it seems to me not so much xenophobia, but more just a reason to loot and kill. - Celeste
