Dont understand comparison 06/06/2008 09:00
Pitso, you are comparing upper income citizens (and largely insulated) view of a sport w.r.t foreigners, with people who face basic problems of sanitation, housing and corruption w.r.t foreigners. The cause/effect & perspective is different. It is simplistic to compare the 2. - AJ |

Please explain 06/06/2008 09:09
Why is the South African government bending over backwards to protect illegal foreigners in this country but tax paying South Africans are left to defend themselves against criminals? - debbie |

A jumble of words 06/06/2008 09:11
Pitso souonds like he doesn't know what he wants to say but amongst all the words one can fathom a single thought - black faces at all cost in national teams. The POINT that many are trying to make is that those unfortunate enough to have been denied the opportunity to represent their country due to apartheid policies are now again denied the opportunity by having their possible positions in the Bok team handed to non-RSA born blacks. - Tuffy |

Pitso, 06/06/2008 09:19
if you followed the news over the past few days, you will see that most of the SA rugby supporters do not support the team. There are still ticket available for the test. Maybe Brian Mujati should explain whether he supports his father's illegal occupation of a farm in Zimbabwe. That is also in the news. There are local players who can do a better job than the 3 mercenaries you mentioned. - hjs |

Its Simple! 06/06/2008 09:21
There's never been any Boundaries in sports, If the Chronic racist French has adopted the Like's Makelele's & Diarra's to proudly represent their national team, what could go wrong with SA..?The current Xeno syndrome can melt like Butter in a frying pan should those Boys render us with Trys to victory.Trust me! - Les-Maada |

Zimbo's 06/06/2008 09:21
I agree with you Pitso. The main difference between the rugby players and most (not all) people from Zim is that they probably have geniune working status here (eg. working visa, etc) versus the msaases who do not have. But then again are they now representing SOUTH AFRICA or Africa. The only I see how this can happen is if the are naturalised citizens of SA and no more citizens of Zim. SA born people have played sport for other countries after adopting those countries. Confusing?? - SM |

Mind boggling 06/06/2008 09:22
I'm not sure what to make of this article. In trying to make a point it reveals a lack of understanding for the socio-economic diversity of SA citizens. The majority of poor South Africans living in the "townships" do not cheer for any of the Springboks since most of them do not support rugby because they have been economically and socially excluded from the game for years. Also not all people living in the townships were hacking foreigners to death or supporting it. - J |

Standards 06/06/2008 09:25
You sound like a cheerleader for foreigners. Maybe you should take the message that is being sent out at face value which is that they are not wanted here. A sporting body putting a few of them in a team hardly seems representative of the sentiment of the masses. - veritas |

Way to go 06/06/2008 09:26
Perhaps Bafana Bafana should also include a few Zimbo's. Perhaps then they will start winning while doing something for Pan-Africanism. - mn |

Apples and Oranges 06/06/2008 09:27
I dont think you thought this over. Chances are the people of Alexandra, Diepsloot, Tembisa, etc. dont give a hoot about rugby. The other thing is that those three individuals you are refering to were chosen by the coach and his technical team, no the masses on the ground. If they were voted into the team, your article would be worth something. - Funnybones |

Lame article 06/06/2008 09:30
Your article is a bit lame man.
Unrelated incidence of foreigners and you link them?
How many of the South Africans that committed those disgusting acts against foreiners, even care for rugby?
I know many people who don't.
There are other sports in this world. As well as people who don't even care for sport at all.
Acceptance of these 3 foreign players to the sqaud as you say. Acceptance by whom? Is there a little box we tick off to show our collective acceptance? I don't think so. - CDboy |

NO Logic Pitso 06/06/2008 09:31
Please Pitso I am part of South Africa and to put me and others like me in the same basket as those criminals who murdered foreigners does not make sense - we can use your logic a conclude that because no many children a women are raped in the country then it also makes me and you guilty of the same criminal act - I do support the 3 ex Zimbos in our rugby squad as they are the best in the country and by the way the are South African by law they not here illegally. - colin |

Simple 06/06/2008 09:32
Go speak to people in the townships, they said, SA people are to lazy to work, and take their opportunities for granted, foreigners come over, see the potential opp and grab it, make it work. They say our people want these foreigners to work for them and they can get money for doing nothing. Its all about opportunity, if these rubgy guys made it work for them, why not. If anyone works hard for success in any country, dont be jealous. Pull finger. - jb |

Doesn't make sense 06/06/2008 09:41
As AJ points out, it doesn't make sense to compare the two situations. The athletes in question are not fighting for survival alongside South Africans under terrible conditions and getting shafted by a lying government (all allegations of laziness, third forces, etc. aside). I imagine that the same can be said of many of those watching the games and shouting their support. By the way, the fear is xenophobia. - CTheB |

HJS You are Wrong 06/06/2008 09:42
Firstly the three players in question are eligible to play for South Africa, they have fulfilled the statutory and legal requirements to play. They are there because of merit. All of them had an exceptional Super 14 tournament.
Secondly, the whole country does not share your view with regard to the players. You are insular and myopic and clearly don't like black people playing wif our other national players. Do us a favour and leave your racism at home. - Freshly Ground |

OPEN THE BORDER?! 06/06/2008 09:46
I heard last night that they want to open the borders between all African countries. That is CRAZY!! What will happen to the value of the Rand? We can't support our own....how will we supply energy and houses to everybody? Because they will come here. South Africa is seen as Africa's wealth Mecca. Open borders and see the true meaning of POOR and crime. - Suzie |

Not Xenophobia, just jealousy 06/06/2008 09:47
I personally think its not Xenophobia but jealousy that cause the attacks. The south African poor are axpeting everything to be given to them were as the Foreigners are actually working for a life. Africa should belong to everybody who decides to live here and make it a better place, not just to a select few. - JJ Swan |

Hard to follow 06/06/2008 09:51
This article is really hard to follow. Is the point of it that we dont like foreigners, but do actually like foreigners? Takes me back to school when you had to write a 1000 word essay, and just mumbled your way through the last 900 words. - Tony |

Border jumpers 06/06/2008 09:55
those three guys you've mentioned they have work permits they are here illegally.understand this the reason people were attacked is this, mob justice. the govt failed to tackle illegal imigrants and the people had no choice but to take matters in to they own hands - kaiser |

Another thought 06/06/2008 09:59
Are they South African Citizens or not? In England you don't hear people referring to Kevin Pieterson as a South African, he is an England player and that is all there is to it. Maybe South Africans are just obsessed with race, besides your national anthem is Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. Not Nkosi Sikelel' South Africa! - Tank |

Who ever says ....... 06/06/2008 10:03
the majority of Blacks doesn't support rugby must still be dwelling in the past because most Blacks has long been keen Rugby supporters. It was only the shadow of the evil regime & hangovers that caused SA lot in terms of Rugby.Did you even know what happened in the Townships after the Bok World cup victory.?I guess not.The celebration nearly surpassed that of 1994.Strue! - Les-Maada |

Welcoming the inclusion of foreigners? 06/06/2008 10:04
I do not agree that SA is welcoming the inclusion of three foreigners into the team, as you have suggested. Many will see the foreigners as a desperate attempt to get black faces, any black faces, into the team. But I do agree with you 101% that Africa has become the laughing stock of the world. - Cynical |
