It was with utter disgust that I watched the coverage of the events that unravelled in Johannesburg City Centre on Wednesday night.

When men and women who have been entrusted with the function of upholding law and order and the safety of the citizenry, take up arms and shoot at each other, something has gone terribly wrong.

When two security agencies, who should be working together to fight lawlessness, abuse state resources to fight each other, one has to wonder whether we are at the brink of a disaster as a country.

The Metro police managed to destroy whatever credibility they had in the public eye in a single night. When they decided to cease to be upholders of the law, and act like hooligans, firing live ammunition at the South African police in the presence of civilians, they effectively declared themselves a danger to the public they claim to "protect and serve".

Their actions were not only disgusting but also demoralizing to a public that is in need of safety assurances. The message is loud and clear to the SA public; those we have entrusted with our wellbeing are not so committed to the course anymore. Heads should roll, somebody should be held accountable, but we all know too well by now, this is just another day in the chaos we call our country.

    More than it seems

Perhaps even more worrying is the fact that the events of last night could possibly not merely be about salary increases as much as they are about the state of disharmony that has engulfed our security agencies. It is public knowledge that the SAPS and their Metro police counterparts have always had unresolved issues coexisting and working together over the years.

We know that during the Xenophobic attacks recently, the SAPS and National Intelligence Agencies (NIA) kept pointing fingers at each other. We are also aware of the current turf war between the SAPS and the NPA. The SAPS currently have a suspended mafia buddy to deal with; the Ekurhuleni Metro police have a power drunken master in Robert McBride.

One looks up to the higher powers who should be re-assuring us, but alas, the best they can do is to extend Jackie Selebi's employment contract while he is still under suspension.

It is up to us South Africans to search within our souls and ask very difficult questions about the direction that this country is heading to. It is up to each individual to really ask; "is this the democracy that we longed for?"

All those who love this country know that whatever is brewing under the surface cannot be allowed to boil over; this country is way too precious. Let us walk into next years elections with our minds open about who should lead us, let us make a statement in the way we elect our local leaders; let us demand excellence from them.

Let us at provincial level demand change, never ceasing to demand the best that we deserve from those we entrust with our future. May God help us as we seek to redefine ourselves as a nation!

      Only in South Africa
    26/06/2008 11:08
South Africa is going through a moral and social meltdown. Seeing the Metro Police start a riot and attack SAPS members must be a new low. Ever since the terrorist ANC government took control of South Africa tensions have been rising. We need a proper First World government, not a group of reactionary militants. - James

      Times up
    26/06/2008 11:10
I've always said that I would be the last to leave SA. But the day that 2 law enforcing bodies start shooting at each other, I guess that I should not be so naive, and see the bigger picture here. This country has slipped into a near state of emergency. So before anyone shouts that I should pack my bags and go, best I do that. This place is a joke. - Camel Man

      Great article
    26/06/2008 11:10
Having been caught up in the disgrace last night I just want to compliment you on a great article - you have said pretty much all I feel right now. I have never seen such utter disdain for law and order as I did last night. If you cant yet see what a disaster this government is, I wish you were in the mayhem last night - you may have changed your mind. Banana Republic? Nope, more like a rotting latrine of a republic, governed by turds and ruled by criminals. ANC - Absolutely No Clue!!! - Stryker

      Well said...
    26/06/2008 11:12
And I agree with your comments 100%. But do you realy belive that things are going to change? I belive not and it sadens me to say so because I love my country and to see it being torn appart realy breaks my hart. All I can say is hold on tight everyone. The worst is still to come... - Demoerin

      Ditto Pitso
    26/06/2008 11:14
How to negotiate in South Africa."If you don't give me or do what I want I will hit you,I will kill you and I will take hostages".This is nothing but unadulterated terrorism on both sides. Why do the cops ammunition to disperse unruly crowds and illegal protests(all the time) and not water cannons?.Think about it you're being shot at even if they are "rubber bullets"Why do the metro cops have hold thousands of unwitting people hostage for something that can be settled in a civilized way.Sick place - psycobabble

      Pitso for President!
    26/06/2008 11:14
Good article. You sum it up so rationaly and candidly, why do the 'leaders' not see things this way? Do you not want to start a political party mate? Why are there no honourable, uncompromising visionaries (like you seem to be) in governement? As I said in a previous comment, SA rite now (even Africa) is so ready for some one to become a hero, an effective 'messiah', to fix the mess. Wont be easy though. - ramone

      Hear Hear
    26/06/2008 11:14
What a wonderful article. Let's hope the majority of SA read this and take your advice. Stand up people and vote. - Anon

      Metro officers are thugs.
    26/06/2008 11:16
That is the only way that you can call them,I have seen metro officers actually doing their work, but unfortunately the few good ones that there are,are getting a bad name, because of the majority behaving like animals, same thing in SA,the few good people that are still here are getting a bad name in the world because the majority are acting like a bunch of animals, killing, raping and stealing from each other, whe have degenerated into a society of mindless barbaric animals. - proud to be white

      Ah, but....
    26/06/2008 11:16
Selebi's contract is renewed even though he's sitting at home! It was anyway just a matter of time before these hooligans did something this barbaric. I have absolutely no respect for any police person in RSA because of their stinking attitude to the population they are supposed to "serve". I trust SAPS about as far as I can throw my car. - Tuffy

im really of tired of white people's comments
    26/06/2008 11:17
on the board, they can never stick to the topic at hand. All they do is attack the "black" government. Now Pitso talks about the Metro police and James is on about the "terrorists". If you want a "First World government" go to Perth. You,Karen,Greg e.t.c have this holier than thou attitude, to whom was the Apartheid government giving first class treatment? And news24, don't censor me for a change. - tshepo

      Credibility
    26/06/2008 11:17
The Metro police never had much credibility to start with. - Phil

Fire the lot and recruit people with a Matric qualification as a minimum and re-introduce build and weight criteria. - Mike

      We're on our own
    26/06/2008 11:19
When i saw the Metro cops and SAPS shooting at each other,i said why can't the army step in to help, but then i rememebered that they also have a right to strike. Here is a question, what will happen if the Metro police, the SAPS and the army all go on strike at the same time? Think it can't happen? Remember they all got a right to strike. - Godfrey

Is this the democracy we longed for?
    26/06/2008 11:19
of course not! and sadly, Pitso you are all too correct in your assertion that no one will be held responsible for yesterday's shambles. Criminals, police - who can tell them apart nowadays? - VG

      Turf Wars
    26/06/2008 11:19
The shady world of organised crime has two new entrants to its murky depths: the 'saps'and the 'metro saps'. This is what happens to a country when u have a spineless wet incharge. for 14 years I have lived in hope. No more. this IS the begining of the end.. - fred

A year ago, I was a patriot, loving the edgy life in Johannesburg. I've had my share of crime, but took it in my stride. Right now, I cannot wait to complete my Master's Degree in September 2008 and then get out of South Africa. My country of birth will not be my country of death as well. - Incognito

      Zoo times
    26/06/2008 11:23
Great article and what gives me hope is that the new black middle class will vote out a govt which is too consumed picking their own noses, scratching each other's backs&have a civil service that acts like animals! Well I managed to get through the traffic chaos but my sister, with two small kids, had to be delayed by over 2 hours while these idiots went about creating the wild west we all know JHB to be. What time does the new JHB zoo on the M1 open during the week? Silently praying for SA! - Paul

Tell It To All The Ignorant Sheep
    26/06/2008 11:29
"Let us walk into next years elections with our minds open about who should lead us, let us make a statement in the way we elect our local leaders" Aaaagh please man! Tell that to all those ignorant sheep who cannot think for themselves and flock to the polls, led by the nose, to vote again for the same party that scr*ws them and the country over and over..... - Expat

Where is the law and order?
    26/06/2008 11:29
The events of last night are a testimony to the "thugs" and "criminals" we have in supposed "law enforcement" positions. I say fire the lot of them that were involved.... Hell, they should be locked up like the rest of the criminals, not parading around the streets terrorizing law abiding citizens who are trying to earn am honest days living and just want to get from work to home safely... - Jeremy

      white peoples comments
    26/06/2008 11:30
Tshepo...get the chip off your shoulder. face reality, speak to fellow Africans in SA (I do regulary) and you will realise that colour no longer is the criteria for people's decisions. The govt & ANC are useless....we need a more representative bunch of people to lead us...whether its chinese, indian, white, coloured, black....point is this struggle movement crap is a cloak for hiding the real reason for being in power....money & lifestyle and who gives a care for the poor black african! - Paul

      metro cops and corruption
    26/06/2008 11:32
How dare the Metro cops go on the rampage like that. We are supposed to respect the law - how else will it be maintained? Can we now take up arms against the corrupt metro who ask for bribes? Behave like adults and we'll pay you like adults. Oh, and they earn more than SAPS do. Again - how dare they. Fire the lot; they don't earn their keep anyway. - cheryl

      Great Insight
    26/06/2008 11:33
Excellent article, it is people like yourself that need to get together with like minded people and push for change for the greater good of all South Africans. The ANC is destroying itself through a collapse of its own moral value system. What is needed is a new political party made up of people committed to all South Africans; I have little faith in the current batch! I believe the time is right for the creation of a political party that subscribes to the ideals that the ANC once did. - Steve

      Well written

      Lock them up !!
    26/06/2008 11:35
Those metro police officers that fired shots should be locked up with their chief. How can a bunch of gangsters shoot at the SAPS and endanger the lives of other people?.Things like this happens in Lagos and should never be allowed in South Africa. The metro police is of no use to us anymore, they are nowhere to be found when there is traffic flow problems, however they will hide in the bushes and behind trees with their camera's because making money is their only concern. These bastards have to go! - steven

      Metro vs SAPS
    26/06/2008 11:36
A sad day for democracy and the rule of law when city officials (Metro Police) need to be dispersed by force by SAPS. Even sadder when striking workers (Metro Police) use officially issued firearms to attack SAPS members. City of Jo'burg, we don't need these elements in our municipal police service, root them out. - Jim

      SAPS vs Metro
    26/06/2008 11:36
Well done Pitso. Good article and fair comment. I can tell you why as well. No leadership. Tabo other than to efficiently gather taxes (this is a good thing, well done Trevor) and then not spend them on the right things (this is a bad thing, not good Trevor). The next person who is going to come and play at being a president is a criminal. Vote for who may I ask? The options are atrocious. There is no one stepping forward that could actually do the job, no matter which political party you chose. - Mark

      @tshepo
    26/06/2008 11:39
Struck a nerve? If the apartheid regime's police could control 80% of the population for so long, and not that I condone that, maybe we should be learning something from them to control the criminals in stead of appointing them. - Martin

      ...what's next...?
    26/06/2008 11:40
Do I realy need to explain why I'm deeply disappointed...we trusted them - But not anymore! Then again, what can you expect from a bunch of mamparras (no proper recruiting, no proper training) who's boss is in todays terms a little-terrorist - if not that, he's bomber that can surely get away with drunk driving! ...What's next...? - Jonah

      Poor Tshepo
    26/06/2008 11:42
Somebody, please give Tshepo a hug! He is still living in fear since apartheid? I bet you Tshepo wasnt even born durin the time, and is just hiding behind his skin!!! Because I am black! Be proad of your nation, be proad of your skin! Be friends with your neighbour, even if his a white boer! Forget about apartheid, and build the future! Stop pitting yourself Tshepo! - Dr Phil

      Nice article
    26/06/2008 11:44
Great article. Metro has and always will be a risk to us. There is no accountability or responsibility within the ranks. I always thought that they form part of the essential services and are not allowed to strike, but it seems they can do what they want. Another reason the scorpions should not be disbanded. - KAC

      Metro thugs
    26/06/2008 11:59
The Joburg metro guys have always been nothing but glorified traffic cops, arrogant towards motorists and concerned more with raking in money through fines that road safety. They should be charged for using their state firearms recklessly in shooting at the SAPS yesterday. - davey

      Change now
    26/06/2008 12:04
It is hight time that we mobilise our friends, families, collegues and fellow Christians and vote out this corrupt, lack of morals, self centred/service ANC. They have cause more harm, and as country we are doomed to be lead by this lawless hooligans. - Jazz

      Well written article
    26/06/2008 12:07
Thank you for a very well written article. All so true, a real eye opener. To you Tshepo, you need to come down to earth and realise we are in this together, no white, black etc. What are you going to do one day when the final curtain comes down on SA? Thank goodness I have somewhere else to go. - carol

      Well written again Pitso........
    26/06/2008 12:09
I am glad that their is hope in the new generation with clear thinkers like PITSO. Unfortunately there are always the bad apples that spoil the rest of the bunch. Just remember that there are a lot of GOOD metro and police officers that should not be grouped with the thugs you saw on tv. Lack of leadership will be this countries great failing. We need competent leaders in the police, metro, municipalites, judges, government etc...until then it will all go down the ZIM drain to. :( i am sad! - KillBill

A very well written article! - Chris

      Pitso "My Man"
    26/06/2008 12:28
Great article. How can any citizen be expected to take these MORON'S seriously anymore. Since when does any military or police force go on strike. Not only strike but endanger the lives of law abiding citizens who were just trying to get home after a day at the salt mine. I would ate to even count how many by-laws and traffic ordinance regulations were contravined. I'll bet they did not obtain the required permissions to hold a public gathering either !!!Nick - Mogli

      politics
    26/06/2008 12:28
I completely agree with the notion that those metro police officers should be fired and locked up. However in terms of your comments about the election I think your views are great but impractical as the majority of our population are uneducated and still follow the leaders of the struggle blindly. Until there is a viable opposition party to whom these people can relate I fear the ANC will be power. Surely there should be a process wherein the credibility of our leaders can be verified. - NG

      Away with Metro Police
    26/06/2008 12:31
My son was also pulled over by Metro Police on the N1 and assulted. They could not find anything wrong with his car. What is the matter with the Metro Police. Please Mrs Helen Zille read our letters!!!! - Vick

      Attitude reflects leadership
    26/06/2008 12:33
Robert on drunken driving charges. Selebi on corruption charges. Who is running the show now? Obviously no one. How dare these two public servant groups misuse their powers and trust to do such an unthinkable thing. I have never heard of the FBI and ATF exchange rounds with local cops. They might not always like each other but work to a common goal. Are we not being terrorized by criminals enough but now much dodge cops bullets. What a disgrace. Xenophobia to this disrespect of law and order. - Morgoth

    26/06/2008 12:37
The people however make valid comments but you can't take the criticism just because a white person is commenting about something that mainly affects black people. That still doesn't change the facts. Americans are allowed to criticize Bush, the Europeans their leaders etc. Only in Africa we can't criticize Mugabe / Mbeki etc although we all know what they are doing is wrong - M

We need a MDC in SA!
    26/06/2008 12:40
Bloke I worked with left 2 weeks ago for SAFER pastures after being shot in the leg in a hi-jacking. Told me the woman who sorted his visa out mentioned she was working on 150 a day. You think the ANC care? Do they heck. Once in a while they 'appear' to be making the effort but the reality is that they are too concerned about covering their tracks that running the country has been forced to take a backseat. - Done and Dusted

      Metro Cops are dangerous.
    26/06/2008 12:41
Well said Pitso, we need more honest articles like this, just comes to show what type of people we have guarding the public - what a shame. - Elsie

      Part of the Struggle
    26/06/2008 12:42
Metro Cops Violence It is not beyond reason to classify the current complaints and demands of the JMPD as legitimate, and more important very much in line with demands made during the liberation struggle. It is therefore fair to assume that they are seeing their differences with the council as a continuation of the struggle. What is the significance of this? In light of the call by Malema and Vavi to take up arms against the dark forces opposing the revolution I would say they are heeding the calls of their leaders - George A

      Competency Test?
    26/06/2008 12:44
I wonder if police officers are subjected to the same "competency to carry or own or operate a firearm test" as private citizens? If so I would imagine it is imperative they are now found incompetent to carry a firearm and since the police won't disarm (like the British) because their argument is they NEED firearms, does it not follow that these police officers are now no longer useful (without firearms) and need to be dismissed or made to write out parking tickets? - Tuffy

      wild west
    26/06/2008 12:45
Why are they allowed to strike? Its a disgrace, and the word democracy should be struck from the South African language. Its rule by force, coercion and corruption. The ANC has no clue how to run a country, and seem to be taking their cue from Bob. - outtahere

      As to the topic
    26/06/2008 12:49
How can police officers strike? Its like letting medical doctors go on strike when patients are about to die!And then start shooting at other police members? They should at least have to check in their guns before they march, I would prosecute the offenders criminally and through the right channels so that they get thrown into prison. - M

      Absolute chaos
    26/06/2008 12:51
Having had a arial view from a building of last nights disaster, not only am I disgusted with the JMPD(those who fired shots should be arrested and charged with attempted murder) but I am equally disgusted at my fellow Gautengers who had total disregard for the rule of law. You may blame taxi drivers for the chaos on the roads but you are to blame to for driving on pavements and the wrong side of the road as well. - Deena

      Treason
    26/06/2008 12:51
These Metro ''cops'' are not cops at all, they are thugs in uniform. When representatives of one state agency engage in combat with another state agency in such an illegitimate manner, that is tantamount to treason! Only in South Africa, and you can be sure there will be no consequences, no accountibility, no one will lose their job, it will just blow over with what remains of SA's standing in the world!!! - Alex

      Perspective
    26/06/2008 12:54
    1. I was directly affected by the act of terrorism that ensued last night, but... Let's put this in perspective. A few metro police members took it on to themselves to behave a certain way, and suddenly the entire metro police are criminals? Let us draw a slight parallel. A few white people held the country to randsom, and were racist, are all whites therefore racist? Let us support those police members that are doing a hard and great job, and persecute...um, prosecute those that aren't. - Jonno

      Pitso
    26/06/2008 13:00
What this country needs is leaders such as you Pitso! You are the voice of sanity and common sense and it is sad that the vast majority of our citizens are not asking these kinds of questions, because only when they start to think in this way, will our country stand any chance of surviving the incompetent governance that currently exists. Now is the time for great minds such as yours to campaign for positive change. - KimPossible

      Buddy-buddy
    26/06/2008 13:33
It's because the system now followed is the buddy-buddy system. Good cops were replaced by pals, cousins, brothers, distant family members, gabbas, anyone, with or without any credentials, some with jail sentences, just your run of the mill guy...and now they all have power! - Alicia

      Salt 'n vinegar..
