The next South Africa's president has a mountain of work waiting for him. No, I am not talking about service delivery, I'm talking about the negative and demoralised nation he will be leading. He will need to do a lot of work on that.

Our country desperately needs motivation and inspiration now. For the past three years we have been sliding on a rollercoaster of bad news, scandals and arguments. It all started in 2005 when Jacob Zuma was fired as the country's deputy president and then accused of rape by an unknown woman. All hell broke loose and the ruling party was broken into two divisions. Since then we have been paying attention to the Mbeki camp and the Zuma camp.

But that was just the beginning. In 2006 the show belonged to Zwelinzima Vavi and Filkile Mbalula. In 2007 Eskom walked away with the biggest award for their notorious load-shedding. The country was suddenly plunged into darkness and for the whole four months the word was load-shedding. South Africans vented their anger in the media and just about any platform they could get.

Because of this, all of us are now behaving ourselves, we switch off the bedroom light when we walk out to go and pee in the bathroom, and then switch it back on when we return ten seconds later. We also keep tampering with the geysers by switching them on and off, depending on our movements. Yes, apparently all of us must do our bit to save electricity.

    Attention seeking

The much-anticipated ANC Polokwane conference was held in December 2007 and since then, attention has really shifted from real issues affecting people, it has all been Mbeki this and Zuma that. Leaders who did not support Zuma were now made to pay, one of the most notable casualties being Willie Madisha after the famous R500 000 scandal.

In 2008, the SABC circus took centre stage, the CEO and the board are spending more time in court than in offices, fighting to remove each other from the broadcaster.

It was also in this year when the bored South Africans woke up one morning and thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea to attack foreigners and set them alight. Xenophobia replaced load-shedding as the buzz word.

There is also Jackie Selebi versus Vusi Pikoli and the disbanding of the Scorpions. And who can forget the Free State University racist video and the Skierlik boy who opened fire on an innocent community? During all this, the Reserve Bank kept increasing interest rates while the petrol and food prices also sky-rocketed.

    Name and shame

We've been forever hearing about Tito Mboweni, Glen Agliotti, Judge John Hlophe, Judge Nkola Motana, Jacob Zuma and the NPA, Vusi Pikoli, Dali Mpofu, Brett Kebble, Jackie Selebi and now Julius Malema, and all of them for the wrong reasons. Do we have a leadership crisis or what?

I really wish I can sleep for a year and wake up when all this nonsense is over! After this lengthy dose of scandals and bad news, South Africans have no reason to be inspired and motivated. Moral is low and all we do is accuse and blame one another and go on bickering.

The next president will have to lift the country's moral and generate a positive energy before getting down to business, we have become a negative and bickering nation that is hopeless and demotivated about our own country. The country's general mood and confidence have really hit rock bottom!

My wife and I are not watching TV news anymore. We will switch on the TV in time for the 2010 World Cup.

I'm really tired of all this!

      Our own fault
    10/07/2008 10:19
It is much easier to become negative than positive. Only when something or someone is gone, do one actually start remembering the good things/times. I agree on the media overload. Our own fault too by seeing every sneeze as a possible Marburg virus outbrake. - TB

      Next president?
    10/07/2008 10:19
Why would the next president care about the 'demoralised' people? He'll get a big fat salary/mansion/perks/private jet trips and does not have to account for anything? Whenever something goes wrong, he can play the race card or even the apartheid card. - Juan

      Good and Bad News.
    10/07/2008 10:24
Q coutry;s moral is highly dependent on the quality of its leadership, but not only the political leadership. It is time that the church leaders and other leaders of civil society start taking a stand and making a positive contribution. We need more websites that concentrate on good news such as sagoodnews.co.za. And we should write to the press with the good things that happern to us and around us. - JK

      Agreed Sello ...
    10/07/2008 10:24
What SA desperately needs now is leadership. Not the typical psuedo type that is all about greed and holding onto power, but true leadership that cares for the people of our awesome country. Yes we have issues, but all problems have a solution. We need new leaders to stand up and lead. Where are they ??? - White African

      Nice...
    10/07/2008 10:24
Thank you for not less than perfect the summary of the cock-up that is our country! - boom-headshot

Yes, who will forget those Reitz boys
    10/07/2008 10:24
Those boys who did something stupid and rude and were immidiately condemned by the international media who made a special trip to SA to come and see some popular racism action. Pity they flew back before they could get footage of some other racist incidents like the people in Kameeldrift who were burnt with irons and tortured or some of our many farm murders. Black agains white racism is just not as bankable even if it is just as (or maybe even more) widespread in this fun country. - Bridget

      Brilliant
    10/07/2008 10:24
Brilliant and well written. So true to the point! A nation run by idiots and megalomaniacs-to-be's and wanna-be's. Supporting Zim leaders who kill? Accusations vs counter accusations. Sounds like a bunch of greedy generals fighting over the spoils of war. - Nick

      C'mon Sello!
    10/07/2008 10:25
We have every right to be depressed and demotivated, and not once in your rant did you even mention the "lower" crime rate.Eighteen thousand plus murders and forty thousand rapes in only 12 months and you expect us all to be happy just because of 2010 (which we have every chance of losing to one of the three "PLAN B" countries now anyway)?! Wake up and smell the cordite chief! - The Truth

      Don't worry
    10/07/2008 10:28
All I can do is watch in amazement, but don't worry God is still in control. - vc

      RIGHT SAID ...
    10/07/2008 10:30
I am a demoralised, angry, fed up and negative SA citizen. I am afraid to say that our "leaders" don't care about us ordinary citizens and neither do we care about them. I also don't watch the news anymore except for the weather. - JerryC

      The good news is.....
    10/07/2008 10:35
that when you switch on the TV to watch the world cup, all will be fine because the SWC2010 will be held in...Australia. Fortunately, they HAVE working power, transport, proper roads, stadia, etc. Not bad, considering they, too, were colonised. - Walt

If we all do our bit....
    10/07/2008 10:35
Sello, I do agree and what a wonderful place this could become if a positive uplifting mood could replace the current one! If we could ALL be/and stand up for honesty and integrity we would be doing away with the most of the bad-stuff here! Who knows...I hope the country becomes gr8 + we can be proudly South African. - ss

      Well written piece.
    10/07/2008 10:35
    Nicely done! - Jonathan

      S.A MISERABLE
    10/07/2008 10:37
Well done Sello, once again your quality of work is shining. Don't forget the Metro and Police unit shooting at each other, and the citizens should still rely on them for their own safety that's whats keeping us so positive. Then S.A was rebinded this morning to be positive for the 2010, give us something postive for a change, S.A. has lost faith in governemnt, and they expect us to be postive, suprise us for a change and give us something to be postivie about. - Mrs. M

      Shame Sello
    10/07/2008 10:37
I feel for you buddy and all who share your sentiment.Maybe we've been trying to hard and fast to get it right. Now we're tripped up in all these crises'you mentioned.I think the best to start enjoying the simple things in life again and not get caught up in our politcal cesspool.Things have a way of sorting themselves out as long as we believe it can and will be better than this in due time.Smile ,its for free! - psycobabble

      Crime
    10/07/2008 10:37
My friend failed to mention about the violent crime, that has taken centre stage in our lovely country. - Krish

      Hear! Hear!
    10/07/2008 10:42
Well said, Sello! Most people in SA, including myself, have stopped "living" and are just "suviving" from day to day. Check out the poll on News24 regarding emigration. More than 60% say they will emigrate if they have the chance. No surprise... - Grootkrokkodil

      All I know is...
    10/07/2008 10:42
that we are a deeply scarred and troubled nation in general and we have been for the last 400 years. We have always been fighting with each other in some way or the other! The family unit itself is eroding away thanks to the pursuit and accumulation of material wealth, but this is in no way a local problem,it's happening worldwide.Increasing food prices, fuel & interest rates etc. don't help spread the joy much either. - The Truth

This is only about the ANC not the country
    10/07/2008 10:43
This article is not about SA but about the incompatencies of the ANC. The white afrikaans speaking africanes are still busy with the struggle. We fought the only war in Africa against colonialism against the British and now against black racism. Our struggle goes on for freedom. Comrades I urge you not to give in and leave the country, we did not loose blood to be in bondage today. - Sam

      ON ANOTHER NOTE
    10/07/2008 10:47
I would like respecfully to know why Mr Nelson Mandela is worth the respect he gets from the world if does not even condemn the status our beloved country,I did not hear him adding his his concern about our present state or am I off the mark. - NAZ

Better leaders than the proposed bunch of criminals or worse is to come
    10/07/2008 10:48
Following the turnaround in South Africa after 1994 the nation, as a hole, was quite upbeat about the new South Africa and its prospects under the ANC, with Nelson Mandela as president. After his term was up, things began to degenerate. The current problems and feelings are as a direct result of the current ANC leadership, who are corrupt and incompetent. Under this leadership, service delivery, crime and tolerance levels are all going the wrong way. Unfortunately, the upcoming ANC leadership is even worse, so we will continue on this downhill path. Give us better leaders or we will become the next Zimbabwe, and it will not take 30 years. - AC

      2010 World Cup
    10/07/2008 10:48
South Africa has a very good chance of winning the 2010 World Cup as we have shown are outstanding ability to beat foreigners on home soil! - Pete

      You forgot to mention...
    10/07/2008 10:58
The travelgate, oilgate and armsgate scandal, the continuous terrorist attacks on civilians and farmers, the persistant denails from Mbeki and his staff to acknowledge that Zim CANNOT solve their own problems because a maniac idiot has a gun to Zim's head. The lack of intelligent non-racist and ideologically sound people are very disturbing, whatever colour they may be. Do you agree chief comrade Kolobe? - Pietskiet

      Miserable society!!!
    10/07/2008 11:00
People who are miserable are hopeless and fustrated because they are suffering from inferiority complex. These type of people are mostly reactionaries, racist and products of apartheid legacy who believes in everything published by the white media. Even during the apartheid era we used to have sellouts who were prepared to sell their soul to the white masters for crumbs. Its unfortunate that at this time & age you still believe in white hegemony. I rest my case with you and anyway vote DA. - Calvin Mkhize

      Sad but very True
    10/07/2008 11:04
But remember it takes an entire goverment to change the country not just one man, unless our new presentdent has the ability to change the mind sets and actions of people in power or simple rid them for more honest and capable people - we are all doomed! All we can do is pray! But truth be told I ant to stay in this country but I also dont want to wait and see what we are all praying does'nt happen (another ZIM) so just have a back-up plan! - wb

      UNSTABLE!!!
    10/07/2008 11:07
Demoralized is a polite way to put it. SA is a beautiful country; it does not deserve its mentally challenged citizens it carries. I feel like Im the only normal person around these days. S.Africans seem to be out of control, have a don?t-care attitude, destable, and lack logical thinking. Anyway, I don?t care who next president is, as I will be far away, reading and laughing about your problems on my patio. Even my Aussie mates say that S.Africans are unstable. - Soon-to be Aussie

    10/07/2008 11:11
It would seem that nothing bucks up this nation like a good sport victory, so those that are involved with our soccer team, please see to it that they win in 2010. By then our government will have provided some peace of mind on other problems currently at large, so all we'll need to get really whole again is a World Cup in our cupboard. Impossible? Of course not! - taurus

      I feel you bru
    10/07/2008 11:11
Reading a letter like this gives me hope. The common man on the street is fed-up with power hungry megalomaniac drones that fuk up the country. We want to be called great, not only because of what Mandela demonstrated, but by contributing something worthwhile in the here and now. Looking back is an ANC delicacy. The current ANC is failing! Real unity and healing will only happen if racial policies are ditched and all are REALLY equal in the face of the law. Ne Kolobe chief? - Pietskiet

      SA has potential but.....
    10/07/2008 11:16
There is no dounbt that SA has the potential to be world beaters in every regard from business to sports. However, I feel that our leaders have personally let us all down. This so called 'African syndrome' is becoming more and more evident as we see problem after problem being ignored to a point where it becomes a huge mess and national embaressment.Ordinary citizens feel as if there is no one in charge anymore and are being left in the lurch at every turn. - wozaaaaaa

      BEELD
    10/07/2008 11:18

You may be demoralised, sello but I for one am not. All these scandals that have seen the light of day are proof that democracy is taking root in SA.The old govt never had to account for its shady dealings. if you're unhappy with the current govt, vote differently next year, volunteer for another party, do SOMETHING...instead of wasting time whingeing on a forum that less than 10% of the country has access to... - VG

    10/07/2008 11:23
We had a hijack inside a guarded complex in Sandton last week. This made me realize just how crime is spreading. Unless poverty is addressed and our borders secured, nothing will change in South Africa. As a white person I will stay until I'm either shot dead or die naturally. - JFL

IF YOU WAKE UP AFTER ONE YEAR OF SLEEPING
    10/07/2008 11:28
My friend in the USA originally from Columbia says the following regarding Columbia (and I quote his email to me): ??there are many ?high level? officials in jail for corruption, drug trafficking, murder etc?; Sounds familiar? Well, if not, it will soon. If you go to bed for a year and wake up, the problems will have doubled as long as the Mugabe/Selebi supporting, racist, corrupt, ANC government can brainwash the masses. - Kal-El

      ANC to blame
    10/07/2008 11:29

      I have a solution
    10/07/2008 11:30
Instead of the ANC politicians becoming embarrased by the suggestions of others that might actually work. Why don't the ANC just employ people to do the work for them. That way the job gets done and they look good in the process. Instead of becoming so defensive and playing the same oooooold race card, let them save face and hire people to do their work for them. It's a WIN-WIN situation !!! - White African

      Voting
    10/07/2008 11:32
I realise that this is going to cause a stir, but I think it makes sense. How can an uneducated majority make an informed decision on who should lead our country. The right to vote should be granted to people that achieve a level of education that allows them to understand the implications of their vote. Maybe the ANC would actually make an effort to educate if that was the case...... - James

Sello didn't mention any political party on his article, therefore the next president he is talking about might be your "glorified" Zuma. Stop seeing everything as Black vs White, it's waaay past 1994. - Vuyokazi

      @Bridget
    10/07/2008 11:35
Farm killings are CRIMINAL acts, what those UFS boys did was RACIST. There's a difference. Those boys never saw anything wrong with what they did - they were having fun and voicing their opinions. This tells me that racism is an illness that is deeply rooted in the mindsets and hearts of some of us, which is why we're not aware when we're being racist. As iv said b4, we all need therapy. Unfortunately, some of us have not acknowledged our illness. There's still hope for you Bridget. - Fraud

      @VG (all about perspective)
    10/07/2008 11:37
VG, ever heard of "word of mouth". It is fora like these (10% or not) that educate. How many people do you talk to after having read an article herefrom? How many do THEY talk to after having listened to you? Any medium to voice opinion is equally important and as such would urge you to encourage these kind of talk. - Arthur Maisela

      Solution
    10/07/2008 11:44
Why don't we start our own party? I've read posts that all suggest, we have some seriously bright and strong individuals amongst us. Black, White and Coloured, why not try and do something, if there was ever scope or a need for a new party to take us forward its NOW! At least we'd be doing something, instead of just commenting. The question is just where to start... It CAN work! - J

    10/07/2008 11:50
I agree that 27 years is a great achievement but only if we achieved,it seems however that the 27 years of struggle have achieved very little and therefore Madiba needs to at least say that he is not happy about the status of our beloved country. - naz

      His own creation!
    10/07/2008 11:51
If the next SA president happens to be Zuma, the current demoralisation can only be attributed to him and his allies. Have you noticed that after Polokwane people have lost their high profile jobs because they didnt supported Mbeki? Yes people have been demoralised, and are continuing in that route, by the arrogance the Zuma supporters are showing. Zuma has split the ANC into 2 and continues to do so via the firing of innocent hardworking people. - Test

Bro, we are all suffering together, all of us, white and black. Here is an opportunity to unite but no not you, you continue to preach racism like those blind people outside shopping malls unable to see the real world around them. - Point Blank

Why don't you publish a list of potential leaders & their Pros / Cons 4 next ellection. You dont want us to unite, but give us a chance to evaluate options & decide what is in the best interest of most. We accept we cannot satisfy all of you all of the time, so give a workable option, rather than shooting down all comments & in stead of ony negative comments. - Matrix

      SA problems run deep
    10/07/2008 12:00
You paint a picture of a country in decline. The golden thread that runs through all the problems mentioned is a lack of emotional intelligence by SA leaders, therefor the majority of the electorate. Emotional problems are almost impossible to cure, the question is, why do the majority of South Africans have such a low EQ score, is it nurture or nature. If the resourses poured into soccer WC can be used to teach normal emotional behaviour at all levels in SA, you may read different headlines. - critical thinker

Nice artical bud, well writen. There are people who get upset when we moan about the happenings of our country but I believe if we dont moan people will just carry on as they want and we would be in a much worse state than we are.Our bitching keeps these people in place and lets them know that we are still alive and have a voice and as long as we have a voice we will make them heard and we dont give a damn what they think. - Gary Clark

"How can an uneducated majority make an informed decision on who should lead our country" an educated man will know that this is a stupid comment, democracy is not about who is educated or not.is this a way of telling us that your"education" is useless, you can't seem to apply it. - Bokamoso

      Very good problem statement
    10/07/2008 12:05
Now for the proposed solution or backout of the project. In business you need to evaluate your problem, proposed solutions and then make a decision as to if you will take action, will it make a difference and is it worth it. I would swear blind that it would be worth it to save a country. So far a cannot see any proposed solutions. I personally need this from my leadership (whether I respect them or not). When I get to vote soon I will more than likely be doing it with an aeroplane ticket. Bye. - Mark

Madiba waisted he's time and life for the current ANC fools ,They dont give a damn about him and what he dedicated for "he's Poeple". its all about the money these days , take a good look at the top ANC members , do they look as miserable as us people ? Never - bongani

and we are sitting in wait for a highly possible missery at the hands of the Zuma people who are heartless. Yet, you are talking of less than 10% of SA having access to this platform. Learn to apply your mind to situations. DO NOT REACT TO SITUATIONS, RATHER RESPOND. I have over the years learnt to keep an open mind. If God took the Israelites out of their misery in Egypt, I am praying that He save those who fear Him. He will see us through. - Outspoken

just because our leaders are fighting doesn't mean we can't be civil or tolerate one another. Reliance on politicians will only bring failure, those people are merely civil servants working for us. - tshepo

Last time checked it is mostly black people that are suffering and depressed turning to racist attacks on other Black African people and to crime more and more on a daily basis, last time also checked we have a BLack government that are respoinsible and incapable of looking after their own. Its unfortunate that at this time & age you still believe in Black hegemony. I rest my case with you and anyway vote ANC again & again! - Calvin re-re edited

You, sir, are part of the problem that we don't need in this country! When will you and your sort wake up from your white racist hatred slumber & rather look at the problems post 1994? The truth hurts, doesn't it?! - Werner

How do you manage to get from this article to the racist babble that comes out of your mouth?? If anyone suffer from an inferiority complex its you, since you keep blaming all your problems on "Whites". Do you have any idea how many "whites" are keeping hundreds of charities, organisations and clinics alive in this country where the majority of beneficiaries are poor blacks people and children (millions of them). So go an get a life, idiot. - Sceptic

You so right! I would not be surprised if Mandela would distant himself from the current ANC leadership. Politics is all about the money, who can get richer while they forget about the people. Tshepo you unfortunately right but yet wrong...civil servants working for us...true but they working for themselves in making their pockets greater, taking from the people they work for to enrich themselves. Mandela was for the people, the current ANC government is now just for themselves. - Win

      Improve SA despite government
    10/07/2008 13:05
The ANC regime is obsolete and insignificant. Don't let their failures steal your hope. We, the people of all races, should work together and change this country for the better. We should not place our hopes on the regime. They are busy attending gala functions and talk-shops and are not interested in helping or protecting us. The sooner we realize that, the sooner we can make a difference to our condition. Our hope lies within us and we live for a better future. - Frank II
