someone is thinking with their kop. Just a pity that Julius Malema wants to "elliminate" anyone that doesn't agree with him... Can't someone make him go away ie give him a toy trainset to set on fire or something? - mikey |

What the doctor ordered 25/07/2008 11:35
Lucas, a really great article. I always like to say that "Talent has no colour"; the best must be allowed to rise to the top irrespective of their race, gender, sexual persuasion or religion. The only criteria must be that they can do the job with integrity and honesty. - Dave Robbins |

Too true Lucas. When someone like Geraldine Moleketi-Fraser is dropped from the NEC because the unions don't like her and then accused of racism because her department promotes more non african managers than is proportional to their numbers, then we know we have a problem. - DavidD |

He does have management skills. But don't forget the disaster of appointing Meyer Kahn to manage the police force 10 years ago. Stop thinking that only white people have the talent and that every black person appointed to a top job is incapable and an affirmative action appointee. - WAM |

Nice... 25/07/2008 11:50
Good article. None of us can deny that transformation is crucial, but to force it to the balance injustices is an injustice in itself. Transformation will occur but when the time is right, lets stabilise, then teach, then transform. - Point Blank |

Not only electricity and municipal management - running this country (government included) should be in the hands of the best, no matter gender or skin colour. Stop the gravy train now and get the goods train back on track. - cj |

Is colour more important than skill? EXACTLY 25/07/2008 11:58
Lucas, great article. Competency will ensure success, not replacing previous (to some degree successful) regime with incompetent "new transformed" regime. Agree that transformation MUST take place, but the way in which it was done resulted in the current chaos. Lets get the right competency (like Bobby) in the correct position regardless of any political agendas. Then skill ALL RSA Citizens to contribute towards a successful & united RSA to the benefit of all. Forward planning is KEY. - Matrix |

mistakes... learn from them 25/07/2008 12:01
Thanks for the article... now hopefully more organizations will learn from Eskom's mess and hire the most competent/qualified/experienced individuals for the job.. Or do u think that they all have to fail in order to learn? patience is a virtue... ;) - greg |

Skills 25/07/2008 12:10
How may skilled, competent employees does Eskom actually have after shunting most of them out over the last few years? - ST |

Proof is in the eating, i.e. service delivery in this case. 25/07/2008 12:12
Wish some of the people on this forum also had your insight. We shouldnt forget the past, but lets move forward. RSA Gov needs to create jobs for all its citizens, i.e. facilitate growth of the economy & positive leadership, not destroy jobs as with Eskom, SABC, & many other examples. We need to get past the barriers holding all of us back, including attitudes. Now next target are the municipalities & Service Delivery. All should get minds out of the past & focus on FUTURE 4 our childrens sake. - Matrix |

To WAM 25/07/2008 12:18
Please try and read the article again - without blinkers this time. Nowhere does it say, or even imply that 'only white people have the talent' etc. And, no-one (with half a brain) says that all black people appointed to top jobs are AA appointees. However, some (and I stess only SOME) are. Godsell's appointment shows a positive shift in policy by the government - that the best person for the job is appointed, regardless of colour. That is the only wat to meet the many challenges we have in SA. - Wiseman |

what exactly....... 25/07/2008 12:20
are you saying here man?are you telling us about how great Godsell is or are you trashing the government and black leaders in general. cause your article is just a long long version of basically one sentence which is: no organisation will come right unless run by a white man. submissive followers like you make me sick when your sole existence is based on pleasing whites. nx - fedup |

What the Doctor Ordered 25/07/2008 12:22
Luwa Ntyintyane your article is probably the best I have read in months - if not years - and certainly makes one feel a lot more positive knowing that there are others who feel like a lot of us, i.e. transformation has gone too far with valuable skills and expertise being lost in the process. Maybe with more of your ilk those in power will take note of your very valuable insight. We need more from you Lucas - Kay |

@WAM 25/07/2008 12:25
Exactly the ATTITUDE I was referring to. This country is for all of us, not for specific group. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Just to counter you argument, very few black leaders have achieved greate successes (Cerril, Tokyo & others) of some businesses. Parastatals are examples. Many competent non-blacks are unemployed because of transformation. Process is justified, but appointees are not alway competent. If we ignore colour, we can achieve much more, benefitting many moreo - Matrix |

Shifting of executives.... 25/07/2008 12:40
Good to have a independent corporate head, as opposed to a overly-political veteran. One would be silly to ignore that business leaders have a political agenda, but the problem comes with political leaders with business agendas. Eskom still needs to take that full privatization step, and the state energy regulator needs to open the market to competition. - Ryan Matthews |

The epiphany is too late 25/07/2008 13:28
Lucas is dead right: in key institutions like Eskom, the water boards, SAPS, merit should be the only criterion for getting a job. However, I fear we should have realised this 10 years ago and with so many skilled people having left the country already, its debatable how much Bobby Godsell can do or a new party in power could do if, for example, the ANC were to be kicked out in next year's general election (however unlikely). However making a start is better than nothing. - Longbow |

I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER... 25/07/2008 13:42
the pressing pain in my chest has subsided. Lucas, if all South African, in whichever group, had your cleancut logical and analytical approach and less emotional baggage, this country would be so much greater. If BEE brought people like you into the mix, nobody would need to be concerned about it. - Christiaan |

Give people enough rope 25/07/2008 13:46
Be positive people! Not all of the masses are stupid either. One learns from mistakes and experience. What would be nice is if the Godsells of the world would piggyback with those who are now about to be shifted elsewhere having learned how not to do it and watch how it should be done. This is where the ANC went wrong, they threw out the experienced without learning from it first. Cut the salry into thirds and employ 2 until the replacement is up to speed, incentive. - GailC |

You are scary! Nowhere in the article does Lucas say anything about white people being the only competents. Why the hell do you have to bring race into everything? For God's sake let's try and work together and BUILD this country, not destroy it with arrogance and stupidity! Great article Lucas. - Mark N |

I sincerely hope that one day you will actually learn to read properly (or is it too much of a "white" requirement).Idiots like you are the reason that there is so much conflict and unrest in SA.Writing garbage responses to a well thought out and written article only highlights your sheer ignorance. Get a life, start by getting rid of your issues and follow it shortly with the equipment that you used to post your response, you are a bandwidth thief! - McFly |
