The appointment of Bobby Godsell as the chairperson of Eskom should be applauded. It's what the doctor ordered. The former chief executive of AngloGold Ashanti is the right medicine for the embattled parastatal. Eskom has been hogging the spotlight for the wrong reasons. For too long it has been over-managed and under-led. A recipe that led to the energy crisis.

Unfortunately load-shedding is denting investors' confidence in the country. With less than two years before the 2010 soccer world cup, drastic action was necessary to correct this shortcoming. Godsell brings a lots of leadership experience to Eskom. His appointment will go along way, in dispelling some myths about transformation. Truth be told, transformation is not an excuse for incompetence. It is also not anti-white. Transformation should be about partisan politics and patronage.

It's an open secret that many mistakes were made in the past. The over-eagerness to correct the injustices of apartheid saw many skilled people being sidelined. Reasons being, some were excluded for having the "wrong" skin colour. Or they belonged to a "counter-revolutionary" political party.

Lack of leadership is the root cause of the problems, currently paralysing key state institutions. These could have been avoided. Today the security structures are headed by acting chiefs. The real bosses are either suspended, in court or fired. To add insult to injury, the public broadcaster is in turmoil. This unpalatable state of affairs is compounded by dysfunctional provincial governments, as shown by the negative reviews, in the recent Markinor survey.

The majority of municipalities are failing to deliver, as demonstrated by increasing number of poor service delivery protests. Poor leadership is damaging the image of the country. People are slowly losing confidence in those in power. Some are wondering if this is the meaning of liberation. But, like any other maturing democracy, it's appropriate to learn from these mistakes.

For South Africa to reach its economic potential, it's important to get the basics right. Finding the correct leadership is the foundation of any democracy. Without a good driver, a car is a liability not an asset. Hence, it's important to ask what kind of leadership we need to take this country forward.

What criteria must be used to choose a leader? Should future leaders be judged on their past struggle credentials alone? Or do we need a leader with African roots, but has a global outlook? Is colour more important than skill? Should leaders be chosen from a particular political party? These questions will provide us with a roadmap, in defining the character of the leader, needed to make South Africa, a world player.

It's in this light that Godsell's appointment is the step in the right direction. It is sending out a strong message - that skill and competence will be used to choose future leaders. We cannot afford to do otherwise.

In the climate of ever changing geo-politics, it's crucial to have leaders with the necessary business acumen; leaders who fully understand the importance of ethical leadership, accountability and good governance.

    Cannot ignore the past

If South Africa is serious about stamping its authority in world affairs, it should get its house in order. We can do so by putting the right people in key positions. We cannot afford to ignore the instability created by infighting at the SABC, leadership vacuum at SAPS and uncertainty over the Scorpions. The government must attend to these issues with speed. Lastly, finding the correct balance between transforming the state institutions and retaining the skills is the next government's biggest challenge.

We cannot ignore the past. But we should be sober about it. Let's transform, but not destroy. You don't want a situation where key democratic structures like the judiciary are filled with political lackeys. The public broadcaster becomes the political mouthpiece. The party becomes the nation.

Undermining the separation of power between the executive and judiciary is the beginning of an end. We need to keep on reminding the politicians that democracy is not defined by name but through actions. We cannot afford to exclude others because they belong to an enemy camp. Or have unacceptable skin pigmentation. We have to reach out to others, for our sake.

Godsell's installment at the helm of Eskom is a vote for democracy. It is breathing life to the Freedom Charter that South Africa belongs to all who lives in it. Everyone who wants to contribute in making this country a success is welcome. The true patriots are those that transcend colour and politics.

Great article Lucas.. well done! - nicky

    25/07/2008 11:34
someone is thinking with their kop. Just a pity that Julius Malema wants to "elliminate" anyone that doesn't agree with him... Can't someone make him go away ie give him a toy trainset to set on fire or something? - mikey

      What the doctor ordered
    25/07/2008 11:35
Lucas, a really great article. I always like to say that "Talent has no colour"; the best must be allowed to rise to the top irrespective of their race, gender, sexual persuasion or religion. The only criteria must be that they can do the job with integrity and honesty. - Dave Robbins

      Sober thinking
    25/07/2008 11:36
Lucas, your thinking is encouraging. Get over the differences, and work towards solving common problems, like electricity. - Johann

      Bingo
    25/07/2008 11:40
when it comes to the basics like electricity and municipality management we can't afford to stuff around with empowerment issues - cameron

      Wow!

    Lucas for President! - Petro

      Tail waggging the dog.
    25/07/2008 11:48
Too true Lucas. When someone like Geraldine Moleketi-Fraser is dropped from the NEC because the unions don't like her and then accused of racism because her department promotes more non african managers than is proportional to their numbers, then we know we have a problem. - DavidD

      I hope so
    25/07/2008 11:49
He does have management skills. But don't forget the disaster of appointing Meyer Kahn to manage the police force 10 years ago. Stop thinking that only white people have the talent and that every black person appointed to a top job is incapable and an affirmative action appointee. - WAM

      Nice...
    25/07/2008 11:50
Good article. None of us can deny that transformation is crucial, but to force it to the balance injustices is an injustice in itself. Transformation will occur but when the time is right, lets stabilise, then teach, then transform. - Point Blank

      Great Article
    25/07/2008 11:50
A well written article - I applaud you Lucas! - Jonix

      Bingo ditto
    25/07/2008 11:55
Not only electricity and municipal management - running this country (government included) should be in the hands of the best, no matter gender or skin colour. Stop the gravy train now and get the goods train back on track. - cj

Is colour more important than skill? EXACTLY
    25/07/2008 11:58
Lucas, great article. Competency will ensure success, not replacing previous (to some degree successful) regime with incompetent "new transformed" regime. Agree that transformation MUST take place, but the way in which it was done resulted in the current chaos. Lets get the right competency (like Bobby) in the correct position regardless of any political agendas. Then skill ALL RSA Citizens to contribute towards a successful & united RSA to the benefit of all. Forward planning is KEY. - Matrix

      mistakes... learn from them
    25/07/2008 12:01
Thanks for the article... now hopefully more organizations will learn from Eskom's mess and hire the most competent/qualified/experienced individuals for the job.. Or do u think that they all have to fail in order to learn? patience is a virtue... ;) - greg

      Skills
    25/07/2008 12:10
How may skilled, competent employees does Eskom actually have after shunting most of them out over the last few years? - ST

Proof is in the eating, i.e. service delivery in this case.
    25/07/2008 12:12
Wish some of the people on this forum also had your insight. We shouldnt forget the past, but lets move forward. RSA Gov needs to create jobs for all its citizens, i.e. facilitate growth of the economy & positive leadership, not destroy jobs as with Eskom, SABC, & many other examples. We need to get past the barriers holding all of us back, including attitudes. Now next target are the municipalities & Service Delivery. All should get minds out of the past & focus on FUTURE 4 our childrens sake. - Matrix

      To WAM
    25/07/2008 12:18
Please try and read the article again - without blinkers this time. Nowhere does it say, or even imply that 'only white people have the talent' etc. And, no-one (with half a brain) says that all black people appointed to top jobs are AA appointees. However, some (and I stess only SOME) are. Godsell's appointment shows a positive shift in policy by the government - that the best person for the job is appointed, regardless of colour. That is the only wat to meet the many challenges we have in SA. - Wiseman

      what exactly.......
    25/07/2008 12:20
are you saying here man?are you telling us about how great Godsell is or are you trashing the government and black leaders in general. cause your article is just a long long version of basically one sentence which is: no organisation will come right unless run by a white man. submissive followers like you make me sick when your sole existence is based on pleasing whites. nx - fedup

      What the Doctor Ordered
    25/07/2008 12:22
Luwa Ntyintyane your article is probably the best I have read in months - if not years - and certainly makes one feel a lot more positive knowing that there are others who feel like a lot of us, i.e. transformation has gone too far with valuable skills and expertise being lost in the process. Maybe with more of your ilk those in power will take note of your very valuable insight. We need more from you Lucas - Kay

      @WAM
    25/07/2008 12:25
Exactly the ATTITUDE I was referring to. This country is for all of us, not for specific group. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Just to counter you argument, very few black leaders have achieved greate successes (Cerril, Tokyo & others) of some businesses. Parastatals are examples. Many competent non-blacks are unemployed because of transformation. Process is justified, but appointees are not alway competent. If we ignore colour, we can achieve much more, benefitting many moreo - Matrix

      Well written
    25/07/2008 12:38
That was probably one of the best written articles (that I could actually understand) that has been written by a reader. Learn from our past to improve our future. - Gary Bloom

      Shifting of executives....
    25/07/2008 12:40
Good to have a independent corporate head, as opposed to a overly-political veteran. One would be silly to ignore that business leaders have a political agenda, but the problem comes with political leaders with business agendas. Eskom still needs to take that full privatization step, and the state energy regulator needs to open the market to competition. - Ryan Matthews

      Nice one brother!
    25/07/2008 12:42
Lucas its articles like this that keeps me positive about a future in South Africa! - Conrizzle

      Positive attitude
    25/07/2008 12:55
Lucas, I wish all South Africans had your attitude. South Afica would be a dream of a country. Cheers. - Boer, skot&ingilsman

Man, take your racist blinkers off and read the article again!!! To Lucas, amen brother. - Taurus

      The epiphany is too late
    25/07/2008 13:28
Lucas is dead right: in key institutions like Eskom, the water boards, SAPS, merit should be the only criterion for getting a job. However, I fear we should have realised this 10 years ago and with so many skilled people having left the country already, its debatable how much Bobby Godsell can do or a new party in power could do if, for example, the ANC were to be kicked out in next year's general election (however unlikely). However making a start is better than nothing. - Longbow

      I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER...
    25/07/2008 13:42
the pressing pain in my chest has subsided. Lucas, if all South African, in whichever group, had your cleancut logical and analytical approach and less emotional baggage, this country would be so much greater. If BEE brought people like you into the mix, nobody would need to be concerned about it. - Christiaan

      Give people enough rope
    25/07/2008 13:46
Be positive people! Not all of the masses are stupid either. One learns from mistakes and experience. What would be nice is if the Godsells of the world would piggyback with those who are now about to be shifted elsewhere having learned how not to do it and watch how it should be done. This is where the ANC went wrong, they threw out the experienced without learning from it first. Cut the salry into thirds and employ 2 until the replacement is up to speed, incentive. - GailC

      @fedup
    25/07/2008 14:22
You really should try and get rid of that HUGE chip on your shoulder! Great article, Lucas! - S

      @fedup
    25/07/2008 15:26
You are scary! Nowhere in the article does Lucas say anything about white people being the only competents. Why the hell do you have to bring race into everything? For God's sake let's try and work together and BUILD this country, not destroy it with arrogance and stupidity! Great article Lucas. - Mark N

      @Fedup
    26/07/2008 16:29
I sincerely hope that one day you will actually learn to read properly (or is it too much of a "white" requirement).Idiots like you are the reason that there is so much conflict and unrest in SA.Writing garbage responses to a well thought out and written article only highlights your sheer ignorance. Get a life, start by getting rid of your issues and follow it shortly with the equipment that you used to post your response, you are a bandwidth thief! - McFly
