As a follower of good advertising in any medium, I am shocked at new trends plaguing consumers.

Companies have now, through their advertising agencies, embarked on most insulting (or is it innovative) advertising campaigns utilising cell phone technology - convincing consumers to buy products and services to win prizes, just by dialling a five-digit number.

Since when have so many products in South Africa dropped so dramatically in appeal that nearly every brand advertised have to have a prize of some sorts connected to it? Buy apples to win an iPod, buy yoghurt to win cash, and buy toothpaste to win a trip.

The list is endless, and I cannot believe that companies have stooped so low. Is not the quality, the price and the appeal of a product the essence of staying in business?

What stuns me more is the fact that so many people actually fall for these tricks!

Also, many South Africans are conned by the following form of advertising; "SMS five digits, and receive 10 ring tones!" "SMS the Bar code and win money!" "SMS 'free' to a five-digit number, and receive 60 wallpapers!"

    Fine print

These are just some samples, and it upsets me that the fine-print underlining these ads are not properly regulated. The writing is very small, the advertisement fast and furious, and very misleading. Many people don't have the capacity to read that the service offered is a subscription service, and to make it worse, companies like Vodacom and MTN clearly state (if you read fast with your nose against the television screen) at the bottom of their particular ads that the service is for Vodacom or MTN users only.

Some child or worse, some adult that cannot read English fast, are so attracted by the offer that he or she immediately dials the number without the knowledge of the ongoing debit out of the cell phone account utilising this service.

What's more, when it says "All errors billed", it clearly means that if you did not read the detail, and your cell number does not qualify, you have still lost the money they charged you for the first SMS.

Modern, affordable technology like cellphones have given so many people the opportunity to modernise their lives. However, with this surge of mobile advertising, the abuse of people's lack of comprehension, and their need for "free money" especially, has reached a point where millions are stolen from the people by companies claiming to be fair and just in their approach towards providing services.

    Scrape through

Companies scrape through by the skin of their teeth concerning the legal side of such services being offered, while laughing all the way to the bank. They offer millions to the viewers, readers and listeners, while we very seldom see who actually won the prize, if any.

It is a travesty that fine print in advertising helps to steal, yes steal, from people in a country where rampant poverty is on the order of the day. The target markets are kids and uneducated adults, and most of the riches generated from these world-wide scams go to the pockets of those at the top of the heap.

No wonder cell providers make so much money while the masses still live in shacks, kitted with "Crying Baby" ring tones on their phones.

You are insulting consumers, and abusing technology. Shame on you.

      Well done to them
    01/09/2008 14:17
I say well done to them, shows you the entrepreneurs ar edoing well in this country, at least they are above the criminal line..... - Martin

      Agree
    01/09/2008 14:18
Goverment should protect the consumers against these money sharks. They always hide the fine print in the corner of the tv screen. I had to educate my kids after they were caught by these criminals. What angers me the most is that they even use the Bible to make money with so called Bible verses on your phone. Where is our goverment? Please protect us! - Leon

      A fool...
    01/09/2008 14:20
... and his money is easily parted. Agreed that the first few times you might be caught because of dodgy fine print, but after that... it's up to you. - MJ

      Oh please
    01/09/2008 14:21
People need to start taking some responsibity for their own actions. Sending an SMS to one of the short codes without knowing why you are doing it is just dumb. - veritas

      Cellphone Ads
    01/09/2008 14:22
Yes, shame on all cellphone companies! Interrupting the blissful TV ads with the ever-increasing annoyance of marketing SMS's. We are being overloaded with information, but are ultimately still responsible for what we pay attention to. Marketing agencies are out to part you from your hard-earned money! - Mark V

      There is no privacy...
    01/09/2008 14:22
Any more these days , One companie has your number the whole world has it and they all spam you with there promo's. Whats worse if you want to unsubscribe you have to pay for that sms. - charlie

      Electronic Darwinism!
    01/09/2008 14:22
People that actually go for these things DESERVE to lose theire money! If you have the know-how you can actually CONVERT your own music and wallpapers for use on your cellphone FOR FREE! There's nothing special about it. If you are stupid enough to pay money for this useless cr@p, then you surely deserve it! - Juan

      Agreed
    01/09/2008 14:23
also wonders who falls for this rubbish! I use my cellphone for it's original intention, talking.. (and a bit of banking too). DO people actually subscribe to these stupid services? They must do considering how often they advertise at night. Irritation. - AJ

      Stunned
    01/09/2008 14:31
Im so relieved im not the only one that is fed up with these adverts. Cant stand them. What example are these adverts setting to our children, to make them think that a nude viewer is even real, and dare not watch a movie with them after 10 because all you see is porn during the ad break. Where has good advertising gone and how can these companies even afford to put these adverts on countless times a day. It is almost impossible to watch anything on DSTV nevermind SABC. Good article Paul! - Dimitri

      Cellphone technology
    01/09/2008 14:31
Seriously if people are stupid enough to actually believe you can get something for free, then they must pay the price, and then they shouldnt be allowed to even own a cellphone. - proud to be white

      NCR?
    01/09/2008 14:34
I agree that this shouldn't be allowed and wonder if the abovementioned body should not be approached. This is an invasion of privacy at the very least and a way of trapping those least able to afford the call back. Mind you if they can afford a TV then I guess some would say they get what they deserve but I know that I've educated my housekeeper about credit and she her friends but when low salaried and hungry people will go to loan sharks anyway. - GailC

      Brain Box
    01/09/2008 14:37
What about Brain Box? That stupid show on ETV. They make up a vague question with 200 different answers and then tell all the callers they are wrong. I would once like to see a detailed explantion of how they arrived at the answers they did. This is a total CON! - Stryder

      On one hand ....
    01/09/2008 14:38
... the cell companies and their dubious hanger-on-pseudo-entrepreneurs are guilty of very nasty, exploitative business ....

... and on the other hand, if people are SO damned stupid...

It does not take a Phd to know that there is NO such thing as a free lunch (or ringtone, or wallpaper or or or) ... but, yes, SHAME on the exploiters. - Cynicus

      Read
    01/09/2008 14:39
I agree with veritas. I've showed my kids (11 and 7) the fine print on the subs services for stupid crying and singing babies and even they can now see that it's a rip off. It's all about education and observation. Don't blame the companies if you are caught buying these ringtones and stuff. - Only me

      Paul ? I suppose.....
    01/09/2008 14:49
....you believe the email that Bill Gates is tracking emails and giving away Millions of $'s and if you read this comment and not pass it on to 6 friends in 10 minutes will go blind, Pfff !!! Sorry, it's the comsumers fault. - Badger

      Paul ? I suppose.....
    01/09/2008 14:51
..they believe Bill Gates is tracking emails and giving away millions of dollars. Or if you read this comment you will go blind in 10 minutes. Poor comsumer, suckers for cash !!! - Badger

      free ringtones my @ss
    01/09/2008 14:59
I was just thinking earlier that it's amazing more people are not complaining about this. The trick to subscribe you (at R60 a week) for 'free' wallpapers and ringtones is nothing but exploitation. Some companies are prepared to stoop really low just to make an easy buck. Luckilly I haven't been caught with this scam but I know people who have and it was quite a pain for them. Took them 6 months as well to find out they're being billed to the tune of R200 a month for this "free" service. - chops

      It gets worse
    01/09/2008 15:01
Have you been home lately during the week? To see how often these adverts try to break your child into buying some silly baby song? What are we to do, tell our children they are not allowed to watch SABC anymore (I don't know if the pay channels do this also)? Please stop this brain washing "now" like you so often say in your silly advert. - Johan

      You can sidesteps..
    01/09/2008 15:02
.. some of this marketing. If you are a subscriber to a specific SP (I'm not saying which one, but you will find out if you try), you can block some of the marketing sms's send via this network. Type *140# and send. Trust me its safe and free. You will get the option to block marketing and "call me" sms's... - HT

      Vodacom At The Front....
    01/09/2008 15:03
Not so long ago there was that vodacom competition to win a BMW...and MY WORD did virtually extort people out of their money!!! It was R10 an sms, and once you had sms'd you would get a msg saying sms again to unlock a code...then another sms saying you are in "bonus mode" and your get an extra 50 entries for each sms in a minute! Each one costing R10!!! Although a fool and his money are soon parted...I know people who spent over R300 a day!!! Some who couldn't afford it!! Gambling by sms??? - KS

Agree... Brain Box is a scam - daylight robbery !
    01/09/2008 15:04
But if you are stupid enough to call into that show you probably deserve to be scammed. I mean they always pretend that they are waiting for a caller to give people false hope that if they phone now they will get through, but you know there is a truckload of people holding the line, while paying a Sh*tload of money for the call - that is how they make their money. Bunch of criminals, and the presenters should be ashamed for being the face of the scam ! - MJL

      Mobile Phone Competitions
    01/09/2008 15:10
I have won 3 prizes via SMS entering of competitons, with the combined value of these far in excess of the cost of the SMS I send. SO, depending on the cost of the SMS, I continue to enter! - Gerard

      WAP
    01/09/2008 15:19
Sumone should train the masses on how to use the internet on their fones, almost all fones these days are internet-enabled. this way they can download all that crap for free (cuppla cents/rands for internet session) and we wont need to see these irritating ads again... - OldSchool

      @ Only me
    01/09/2008 15:19
I think you did the right thing and saved yourself a lot of money. I suggest parents also show their kids how to upload sound clips and images from a computer to their cellphones if the phones have such functionality (via USB or Bluetooth). Shows again what happens if parents spend time with their kids... Btw, providers of cellphone content get their content for free via the internet and some computer-based editing. So they make 100% profit from the techno-illiterate. - HT

      I concur
    01/09/2008 15:25
To further on that, the cellphone networks are just as skelm.Ever received or sent a please call me?The advertise a lot of their crap underneath as well and it violates me I do not wish to see their crap every time I use my phone - FedUp

      Con jobs
    01/09/2008 15:32
Okay - I like a good download as much as the next man but at the costs these licensed bandits are fleecing people with? No sir!!So the alternative is to go and use zonkewap or waptrick.I still get a good choice of music, logos, ringtones et al but no subscription and I only pay the connection costs to the net. Up yours 31314!!!! - Sean

      I Agree
    01/09/2008 15:40
Have you seen how many SMS 35... adverts there are on e-tv! What a croc of S***. It infuriates me! Even getting a bible verse a day can cost as much as R30 per 5 days! Thats R180 per month! Absolute garbage, absolute ripp-off! True tones, games...etc.etc! all you have to do is sms "Free". Like hell its free! I wish i met the MD of these companies so i could send them an sms telling him/her exactly what i think of their product and the time they waste with ridiculous ads on tv! - Dave the Brave

      @MJL
    01/09/2008 15:49
I agree with you that people who fall for this are stupid, but that doesn't mean they deserve to be victims. Surely intellectually challenged amongst us need to be protected, hence even more reason for something to be done about these HIGHLY UNETHICAL Scams. I love riddles and puzzles and am quite good at them, but the few times I have been fortunate enough to hear the answer I have been at a loss to get to the same answer. - Strdyer

      this scams are worldwide
    01/09/2008 15:54
I first noticed these SMS competitions when I was in Germany 2yrs ago, man, every tv break (and their breaks are very long) is full of this cr@p - but I think the worst are the porn ones, in Europe they even play that sh!t on tv during the day... Wait & see, its coming to SA very soon too!!! Sick-world-we-leave-in - RicciRich

Brain Box is an even bigger ripoff !!!
    01/09/2008 15:55
Those fools make up a vague questions and know that they can change the answer as they see fit! I rememeber seeing a word search question once, and EVERYONE that called in while I was watching was told they were wrong...ANd the question was find the animals in the grid, and there were numerous animals names in the grid, and a set number of "right answers". That is not a fair game, but a gamble. Brain box is not a game show, but a gambling show. It is a total ripoff! - Truth

      Who's responsible?
    01/09/2008 15:55
I agree that consumers have to be resposible and understand what they are subscribing to. What have you noticed how blurry the fine print is on the tv ads? You can barely make out the terms and conditions at the bottom of the page. And the price per week thing is downright misleading. They purposely target kids who won't bother to read the fine print. - Petra

      Please make it stop...
    01/09/2008 16:00
I can't handle it anymore...If I see any more crying babies, babies that sing, nude viewing cellphone radars, high-pitched secret signals, vicious guard dogs, grannies that fly...I am going to throw my cellphone at the TV screen. Good riddance I say - Sick and tired

Stryder, I also am at a loss to the answers in Brain Box
    01/09/2008 16:01
I have watched the show only once or twice...I try to change the channel if it is on. But there are a few times when my love for puzzles gets the better of me. I then wait for the answer and realise, that the answer makes no sense! It is like asking, How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? - Truth

      PVR
    01/09/2008 16:06
PVR was the best investment ever. I merely fast foward through the adds that charge R30 per week and try to explain that "pshyco teddy" or nude viewer is what I have been waiting for. - Murray

      Leon
    01/09/2008 16:07
Why does it anger you that they use the bible to sell their message. Teh church has been doing that for centuries. If you are gullible enough to believe in religion then you are gullible enough to but ring tones off the phoen companies. Rather protect yourself then ask the gov to do it. Nothing is for free, people should know that by now - bj

      Get this on your phone
    01/09/2008 16:14
Paul, I think at the end of the day the onus lies with the Cellphone owner. Why are we allowing ourselves to be duped into subscribing into these things? People should learn not to be easily tempted to subscribe to these things. It seems now they have subscription for everything on earth - Lungig

      Brainbox..
    01/09/2008 16:16
If an ex-stripper with assets the size of basketballs read you a riddle while fanning her cleavage with a wad of cash, were are you spotting the intellectual challenge?! - HT

      Innovation of privacy
    01/09/2008 16:23
yeah, these ads are annoying, agreed. I'm not for this at all and under the FICA guidelines the direct messages to your cellphone is illegal. Irrispective of that - tell me - if I asked you via cellphone/TV/newspaper to go and kill yourself, will you do it? I'm tired of this attitude of blaming the media and music for irresponsible actions of stupidity taken by the population. if you're dumb that's your own problem, go ahead and pay the R10.00 to download singing-baby ringtones. This is pointless - The Prophet

      Brainbox
    01/09/2008 16:32
The most annoying thing about that show is the presenter. God, that female is annoying! When she presses her face rite up to the screen and bats her eyelids, its all I can do to not lose my dinner. She treats the viewers like absolute idiots, explaining these supposedly complex riddles over and over, and then it turns out you actually had to be reading the riddle from right to left to get the answer. Horrible. - ramone

      WASPA regulates this

      Brain Box
    01/09/2008 16:34
I have to agree with the above on this "program". Can someone at news 24 please expose this scam. I for one would love to understand how the answers are gotten to. Scam hundreds of thousands on the first question then give away a couple of grand on an easy question in the second round. - IceCreamMan

      NO more babies!
    01/09/2008 16:59
I shudder to think what I might do if I hear one more crying, laughing, giggling, rapping, singing or cr@pping baby on TV I might just SNAP. Firstly I will take my TV licence and do something realy improper by combining it and some of the marketing staff at a local TV station, it will be followed by my TV itself. Id be better off with a monitor and a DVD machine for the rest of my life. - Cry Baby

      MARKETING INVASION
    01/09/2008 17:33
Once upon a time, we didn't have flippin cellphones. Once upon a time, trashy hawkers and opportunists came to your door or gate flogging junk. Now we are invaded by unsolicited electronic junk mail, sneaking through the electronic letter box. Gone are the days when a nuisance "Kirby" suck it up could be told "no thankyou" and understood the message. Only answer is to boycott the companies who sneak into your private space with junk mail offers. - Nguruve the Bushpig

Brain Box - make it stop!
    02/09/2008 06:25
Saw some of that show twice for some reason I'll never understand, and it made me want to harm myself. Just poor people conned into paying to call in. No real answers to the questions or can be interpreted in many ways. Scam of note. - AJ

HT, who are you talking about?
    02/09/2008 07:41
I'm not sure who the ex stripper you are referring to is but the black lady who presents the show is a married woman who until about a few years ago was a presenter on YoTV, a kiddies programmee on SABC1. Having huge boobs does not make one a stripper. - Leungo
