  • Dear Editor

My heart sank when I heard the news that the Springbok emblem has come under attack once more.

I can understand the school of thought that there should be one emblem, but I challenge anyone to name a sports emblem that's brought more pride to this country than the Springbok.

The name "Bafana Bafana" is viewed with contempt in soccer circles and they've really embarrassed our country in recent years.

I heard that the Springbok emblem carries "negative baggage" with it, but has this not been outweighed by the positive yet? Was the sight of first Nelson Mandela and then Thabo Mbeki in a Springbok jersey not good enough to set an example?

Is having "Springboks" engraved on the world cup trophy twice not reason to be proud?

South Africans need to look to the future. The "Springbok" has become as famous (and possibly as respected) as the "All Blacks" in rugby circles and I could never imagine New Zealand changing that name.

We as the rugby watching public should have a right to have our say in the matter and mine is that the emblem stays.
