Imagine a better Malema

Thilaiwi Nethengwe, News24 User

Have you ever thought what a better utilised Malema could do for our country? Julius Malema reminds me of the man who used to be called Saul before he became Paul in the bible. In a nutshell, Saul is the man who used to persecute Christians until Jesus recognised the potential in him. Saul became a changed man and he later became known as Apostle Paul. He is now known as a great missionary of Christianity.

I view Julius Malema as a strong, impertinent and fearless young man who do and say what he feels without proper consideration of the repercussions of his actions. The only problem about Malema is that he is not utilising his potential for the betterment of our country.

Imagine Julius Malema tendering his resignation from ANC to join The Congress of the People because he believes that it is his obligation as a young individual to defend and protect our tender democracy in which a lot of people were prompted to sacrifice their lives for the democracy that we are presently enjoying.

Imagine a fearless young man like Julius Malema saying vigorously that he believes in equality before the law therefore calling for Jacob Zuma to have his day in court to answer for his alleged corruption charges like everyone else who find himself/herself in a similar position as Jacob Zuma. Imagine Malema questioning Zuma's mistrust of the judges in his current corruption case, whereas the same judges acquainted him in his rape case.

Imagine a Julius Malema who values education and as a result redoes Grade 12 so that he can be a role model to young people and he can also legally register for degree in law with Unisa. Imagine him being disturbed by trees as classrooms in this era.

Imagine him reminding young people what Steve Biko, Hector Peterson, Tsietsi Mashinini and others did for future generation to have proper education that they wish; therefore, he encourages young people to utilise this opportunity presented fruitfully and to the best of one's capacity because tender lives has been compromised for constructive education which we are now enjoying.

Plight of young people

He would go on to say our country is faced with extreme shortages of expertise in the fields of chartered accountants, artisans, medical doctors and civil engineers. As a result he encourages the youth to choose maths and science at your high school level to qualify for those essential aforementioned fields of study.

Imagine Malema acknowledging the plight of young people, determined to make use of his position as he should be doing to address the challenges that young people are facing. Imagine Malema with the same vigor he use to defend Zuma telling government departments to open doors for young post-graduates as a bid to alleviate unemployment amongst young people.

Imagine him mobilising young people from various provinces to embark on a legal strike to demonstrate their discontent about the disbandment of the Scorpions - one of the most effective organised crime fighting units. Imagine him discouraging young people to indulge in unlawful and harmful activities such as drugs, sex and alcohol and also to encourage them to volunteer in activities that are meant to combat crime which is scaring away potential investors.

Imagine Malema declaring his full time availability to fight corruption an enemy number one to better service delivery to the people of South Africa.

The state of politics in our country is very worrying; we need fearless young people like the ANCYL president to speak vigorously and honestly for this country to survive its current tribulations. The only hindrance for Julius Malema is his association with a party or people who are opting to compromise our hard earned democracy for a particular individual.

I believe Malema has certain traits that are missing in the present generation. If Julius Malema can be properly mentored I bet half of the difficulties that we are faced with as young people can be resolved. He's fearless and assertive but in a destructive way, he needs to start utilising his scarce personality traits constructively to create a ladder for young people to reach greater heights.

It will stay just - a figment of your imagination. Keep imagiing and Enjoy your weekend.
Al the Pal 11/21/2008 8:56:28 AM
Well Thilaiwi, although your fiction will never ever become reality, I my view this is the best essay ever written on this platform. Thanks a lot. It does show what is possible if sanity prevails.
Peter Maluleke 11/21/2008 8:56:42 AM
I do not think Malema is the only one that should change. Refering to your statement around Biko,Peterson and Mashinini. What has the whole of the ANC inclusive of us the voters doing to better education for our people? Nothing in 14 YEARS! Enriching ourselves and no future for our children. No stability (services). Did they die in vain to enrich only a selected few? Did they die becasue they were in the struggle and we are not there anymore? Vote with your brains this time.
Mzi 11/21/2008 9:01:51 AM
He acts like he's posessed. whenever he talks he spits fire to the opposition. how about you submit this letter to him and wait for his response. He will probably say this is a plot by COPE against him, or SABC sent you. Malema is 27 for 5k sake, he should kno what's right or wrong by now.
Mike Hint 11/21/2008 9:02:11 AM
So tell us Thilaiwi, do you also believe in Father Christmas, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny? You are talking about the selfsame Julius Malema (of "we'll Kill for Zuma" fame), who seems to have uncurable "Foot and Mouth" disease? Sorry, my man, but in order to change, one needs the foresight and intellect to see the need for change - I'm afraid Julius has neither.
cos 11/21/2008 9:02:12 AM
Well written article and quite true. Malema, in his position, has the opportunity to go down in history as one of SAs foremost "politicians". He could be remembered for encouraging, empowering & uplifting our youth & SA as a whole.Instead he will be remembered as a joke, an embarrassment, an embittered fool looking for a fight instead of a solution! Anyway forget him, from this letter I think Thilaiwi should get Malemas job! -knows what is expected of a leader of our youth!
Petrus Gumede 11/21/2008 9:06:02 AM
Where the ANC and its freeloaders are involved there is no grater good except the bank accounts of the gravy train hogs. Malema has his C-Class Merc and house in Sandton - there is nothing else he need achieve. Until the ANC and its cheque book running dogs are voted out of power, South Africa will continue down its road of destruction
Lucky Ralawe 11/21/2008 9:09:10 AM
to talk about the prefect of the ANC creche yet again? Yeah, I can imagine Malema undergoing a Damascus Conversion - in my dreams! In the real world, most of the current ANC leaders who should be mentoring him are themselves on the wrong side of the law, hence their haste to disband the scorpions, and their complicity in the horrors coming out of Malema's mouth. If we can imagine a converted Malema, then let's go ahead and imagine the sun rising from the West!
BigMac 11/21/2008 9:09:21 AM
Someone I could and would join to make this country what it should be. Maybe the women who has taken control of Cope's youth league is just that person. If so I'll be right there on the front line with my fellow black and white South Africans moving this country forward. Great letter, thank you.
Grace Kadzere 11/21/2008 9:11:40 AM
I dearly agree with you, writer. The youth would be on another level with the enthusiasm to vote & make this country a better place. But then again it's just a fantasy. Maybe one day he will see the good that he should be doing but right now, imagining him changing or moving to COPE is as good as imagining Sylvester Stallone doing any justice to the lead male character in Pride & Prejudice; IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!! Malema has to go through some intense therapy to decolonise his mind first..
Bizza-Lockshin 11/21/2008 9:14:34 AM
Julius is a spent cartridge, when he was supposed to get and education he was busy removing 'strategicaly' positioned election posters of the NP, organising pupils to cause chaos is the JHB city. Standards have dropped in the ANC in general, look at Malema, Zuma and Angie. Why are intellectuals in the movement so quiet and content. Where is Dr Palo Jordan, Mathew Phosa, Mujanku Gumbi, Dr Skweyiya. The ANC is being lead by immoral uneducated loud individuals that will bring this country down!
Mum 11/21/2008 9:16:50 AM
Thilaiwi makes a good point, if somewhat far-reaching. I would be more than satisfied if the ANC Youth League were to do anything at all relevant or helpful to the youth of the country.
natalie 11/21/2008 9:17:45 AM
Not just mindless criticism, but excelant sugestions. I hope you will be joing COPE and influencing young people. Surely by your example young people will see how valuable an education is. And how rewarding.
sj 11/21/2008 9:18:35 AM
Imagine, thats all we can do mate!!
bj 11/21/2008 9:19:30 AM
Imagine all the people... No religion too ...Great in theory but not going to happen.
Tsotsi 11/21/2008 9:19:51 AM
Ohh... He is working for the greater good of SA. Getting people who usually vote with their heart to now vote with their heads. You go boykie!
Karen 11/21/2008 9:22:02 AM
All the things you are imagining Malema doing (or not doing) would mean that you are actaully imagining somebody other than Malema. I don't believe Malema has anything good to offer this country. Imagine Malema does not exist and while you're at it imagine that Zuma does not exist either since they are both a great big septic sore on the ass of this country. Without them and all their cronies the future of this country would look a whole lot brighter.
TOSH 11/21/2008 9:22:47 AM
its true Malema could be one of the kind if nurtured in right way.Right now is he`s a rebel without a cause, fighting for wrong reasons and defending wrong people and cause.I too can imagine him for that
Just Me 11/21/2008 9:23:54 AM
...."I view Julius Malema as a strong, impertinent and fearless young man"..... clearly you require glasses as you see strong, impertinent and fearless instead of stupid, reckless with no respect!
VG 11/21/2008 9:24:09 AM
I am getting heartily sck and tired with the obsession with this man/boy/youth/whatever. Thilaiwi, why can't YOU do the things you're calling for Malema to do? why can't people stand up and do for themselves instead of waiting for some "messiah" to take the lead? Why are you calling on Malema ? why does the DA not have a youth wing? and if they do, why are they so quiet? Why is COPE's Anele Mda not doing these things?
timmy 11/21/2008 9:26:41 AM
This could be a new John Lennon song... I admire your faith in the ability of people to change for the better, but I cna't help but feel that Julius Malema will never be compared to any of the positive figures from the bible by future generations!
Kenroid 11/21/2008 9:27:29 AM
Although your piece was quite well written and very positive...there is no way that the imagination can go that far! If you can imagine it...then you are delusional!!! Julius encouraging people to do maths while he has an awesome school record??? I think not!!! I am all for Anele Mda...she is a much better leader than Julius will ever be! I can't wait for her to get going!!!
suzie 11/21/2008 9:27:34 AM
Next to me sits a man that comes from the same area as Julius and knows him personally. This is a man that I trust with my life. I wish you can hear the stories he tells about Julius and that NOBODY that lives in that area trusts him.
Ima 11/21/2008 9:35:33 AM
You are confusing fearlessness with stupidity. Malema represent everything we dont need. A young arrogant, uneducated, brown-noser who speaks from a position of ignorance rather than enlightenment.
BC 11/21/2008 9:37:19 AM
A very nice thought, but I think having seen "Malema in action", it is mere pie in the sky. I think he is cut from the same cloth as JZ, and to be honest I don't think either of them even consider the consequences of their idiotic utterances or actions. With the two of them "in power", I fear this country is on the road to ruin!
Mandla 11/21/2008 9:40:45 AM
Even Shikota envy the young talented Malema. For now Malema will concentrate on the enemy that wants to destroy the ANC. He is not afraid of DA or Shikota, the common enemy. It is through the ANC and the other liberation movements that we achieved this democracy. We wont allow mickey mouse like Shikota to destroy our movement which is the Congress of the People. "Love and respect for me means love and respect for the ANC" ? Mandela: December 1997. Mandela is still a disciplined member of this liberation movement, unlike the undisciplined SHIKOTA.
NN 11/21/2008 9:40:47 AM
... or he would simply be like one of those leader that will perish and never hear any good about him... like Hitler or Voster for that matter. We want more Samora Machels, more Arafats. If you lead and mentored by criminals, what are the chances of not becoming one? Leaders that lack education, what do you expect? They are there to be used by corrupt individuals at the backseat of the vehicle.
Conscience 11/21/2008 9:41:18 AM
If you could address all the issues as indicated above; mean it and lead by example, I think you will have a bright political career amongst the grown ups. I really think you overstayed your welcome in the ANCYL. It's time for you to move on into the real arena and work on your political career and allow another (real) youth leader to assume his/her rightfull place as ANCYL leader. Follow the author's advice above and one day you may just become great for all the right reasons.
kk 11/21/2008 9:42:43 AM
Imagine if COPE breeds its own relevant young leaders like you, intelligent, smart and tactical?Imagine if intelligent poeple like you join COPE and forget about this Malema's ANC.South Africa wil be a better country. So stop imagining and join COPE.
Philani 11/21/2008 9:43:34 AM
This is boring to the core, please, its not on. The editor of this website must be fired, showing signs of passing sale by date. Politics surrounds us, but our lifes do not end there, so do not get us stucked on political battles you want to win.
kk 11/21/2008 9:43:35 AM

tshepo 11/21/2008 9:48:18 AM
why can't you be the Malema you dream of? that's nothing stopping you.
Mark T 11/21/2008 9:48:42 AM
Loved you Stallone jibe- brilliant, made me laugh. In my poinion anybody that close to 30 is not a youth. Indeed, he could be using his energy for upliftment pursposes, not to use it to defend JZ at every opportunity he gets. Unless of course he is doing it to secure a place in JZ parlaiment. Then clever Julius. We do not need fire breathing, anti democracy type of leaders who protect some revolution they have created to protect.
Snafu01 11/21/2008 9:51:32 AM
There's an old saying that you can't teach an old do new tricks. The same can be said about Malema, you can't try to teach a thug to become an upstanding member of society, when the thuggish attitude is so deeply ingrained in their psyche. Malema thinks he is above the ordinary South African. He believes he has a right (God given that is) to say and do what he wants to, as long as his own agenda is fulfilled to the detriment of the ordinary South African. Thilaiwi you are dreamer.
Karen 11/21/2008 9:51:59 AM
While Mandela may still be a disciplined member of the ANC, I think it is probably just because he hasn't actually resigned and that is also probably not because he still believes in them, but because he is old and has retired from the political arena - speculation of course. There is nothing disciplined about ANC members any more and I think if the ANC is not afraid of COPE they are stupid and should stop trying so desperately to stop them from functioning - its pathetic.
Mandla 11/21/2008 9:52:27 AM
The Truth is bitter and Malema tells it. He did not like what Mbeki did to Zuma and he told it like it is. He does not like snakes in the organisation and he name them even if they are on stage with him. COPE, media and DA will write about Malema everyday and try to influence the people that he is stupid and uneducated because Malema is a powerful young man. He passed his matric and people want to destroy him with his results. I know people who got the same result, went to university through a conditional exemption and did well. He can also study at the college or University of Technology but at the moment he is at the university of Politics, ANC. He is learning watch him.
Tony 11/21/2008 9:53:02 AM
Wouldn't that be something? Unfortunately, he has been 'headwashed' you cannot say brain, because he still has to develop one if possible at all. Anele Mda has been keeping him very still lately. Now, Anele is the one that the youth should listen to because she is fearless, even Gwede Fongkong Mantash asks for protection when she confronts him openly. Up Anele and most definitely down Julius Mampara.
MJ 11/21/2008 9:53:10 AM
Why try imagine him being better when that is not who he is. There are others who ARE already better, in reality, and they should be chosen.
Anonymus 11/21/2008 10:03:30 AM
If yoou think you are smarter and better, how come you are not doing the job yourself, because you are as incapable as him, just keep your opinions if you have nothing better to do with your time, you are wrong about the man and he is certainly not soul, He is Malema, the man who has bees telling it like it is lately.... plaese leave the man allone..
Mapholoba 11/21/2008 10:03:48 AM
Nothing wrong with Malema except you and white owned media are pushing for your own agenda since you are in a new marriage. Do not think you are intelligent by virtue of writing these stupid articles here, look carefully who is embracing your analysis.White do not and will never like you in a million years to come , only for this article becuase you are fighting with your own intelligentia. Wake up Brother !!!!!
Keepin it Real 11/21/2008 10:05:25 AM
Dude, you have great thoughts on what a youth leader should be doing. Unfortunately the fantasy of Julius ever fulfilling such a role will not be realised. The rest of us who have sanity and intelligence should do more in actions in ensuring to create a gr8 legacy for our childern. We would be doing ourselves an injustice by debating the level of intelligence or positive (oops negative) impact that Julius aka Brutus may have on SA. Rather lets get involved.
Azania 11/21/2008 10:05:42 AM
My friend you want to steal the congress of the people, freedom charter and now Julius Malema from the ANC, eish!!!, no wonder in my area Shikota is now called Shittykota. Thilaiwi and your comrades go and think for a proper name for Shittykota instead of spending a lot of time conspiring to steal from the ANC.
Jeff 11/21/2008 10:08:55 AM
So sad that even people who can write so beautifully remain oblivious to the decay that was manifesting itself within the 'old ANC in the last 5 years. Malema is only a proponent of good governance and service delivery. It's a pity that when he supports the 'new ANC' that says we are aware of 14 years of non-delivery, and we now want to change course and benefit all and not a handful, he is called all these sorts of names. Pity to all the selfish and greedy fat cats. Your time is up!
Benzo 11/21/2008 10:10:25 AM
We have seen this in high schools and varsities, those who were not doing well were always using violence as an excuse. I bet u that if one can advice Malema to register something, he will tell you that he is busy, so bully politics seems to be the only way he can afford a Merc while some of us have to sweat at school to afford a Merc and a house in Sandton.
Suzz 11/21/2008 10:12:16 AM
It's a nice thought, but it won't happen. He already made up his mind how he wants to operate and why. He's not going to change.... The chip on his shoulders are too big.
COS 11/21/2008 10:13:09 AM
It had to come - the race issue - why remarks like "white owned media" & "white do not like you" - How dare you! If Malema was white, he would be a fool, if he was green, he would be a fool, he just happens to be black & a fool. It has nothing to do with colour and persons of colour should be allowed to express their disgrace at Malema & the ANC if they see fit! This is a democracy at last remember!!!
Wilhelm 11/21/2008 10:16:03 AM
Why does ANC members keep on refering to COPE and DA etc as enemies and constantly refer "fighting" Your so called "fight" for "democracy" has been over for 15 years. The biggest threat to our democracy is the ANC itself. A one party state is NOT a democracy. Democracy did not start in '94 , it is starting now ! This is offcourse if the ANC does not start a civil war because their "democracy" is being threatened. My thoughts...
Richard Hipkin 11/21/2008 10:17:07 AM
Hahahahaha... are you for real dude? You sound like someone who merely comments to get a reaction by being sarcastic! If you are being serious then you still funny. But don't give up your day job!
Dave 11/21/2008 10:19:39 AM
The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of a mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one. -Wilhelm Stekel, physician and psychologist (1868-1940)
Love africa 11/21/2008 10:20:11 AM
Honestly that goes for nearly everyone in a powerful position other than Mandela who really did use his power for the people. I think Mamela is a joke with a few thugs to bend people to his will, African style democracy! Also look for answers in the bible isn't the solution more people have died over that than for any other reason!
M 11/21/2008 10:20:46 AM
Adolf Hitler was a very good speaker in his time. The people followed him and look what happened. You are so afraid of the media but your ANC has been using the SABC successfully till recently to brainwash people. Now that you get to taste what a biased media is,you all start crying like babies.Mapholoba - At least Thilaiwi can hypothesize, you can only insult,so who do you think is the more educated?Bigot!
David 11/21/2008 10:22:00 AM
There is nothing wrong with Malema. He is dedicated and trying to do a good job. Those who do not like him never have a better solution. He is a great man.
Mandla 11/21/2008 10:28:30 AM
Imagine if DA and COPE had such vibrant youth leader like Malema. Imagine how much attention they will be receiving from the media and other political parties. I am not surprised why there has been character assassination on this young man, he is hurting the opposition. COPE members please tell us what academic qualifications are the intellectual Mbhazima and Lekota have. Are they different to Malema academically?
slabs 11/21/2008 10:28:32 AM
Racists like you need to be eliminated from our society. You are the one that needs to wake up, "nothing wrong with malema" and "whites do not and will never like you" are coments that malema would say. You are a idiot and do not deserve to be part of this democracy. I suppose that Mugabe is also a great guy and his people are suffering because of the white man....Wake up man you are blind.
Mike F 11/21/2008 10:33:13 AM
He is cuasing people to move away from this ANC; he is making more people realise they must vote against this ANC; he is awakening our Youth to the fact that the ANC youth league cannot advance the aspirations of our Youth. Good going Julius drive them away, in the right direction.
NotForgetting 11/21/2008 10:33:43 AM
Everyone's rushing to join Cope, whilst there still remains unanswered questions and NO convictions about the theft of money and arms by one of it's leaders when he was in a position of power...go figure...People, please use your brains when voting...don't just blindly look for a new leadership for this country without weighing their past actions...snakes may shed their old skins, but they're still snakes after all...
Nthatuwa 11/21/2008 10:36:45 AM
The previous article and comments I read about Malema just gave me a terrible headache. Some commentor said he might be used by the ANC to intil fear,I'm starting to believe that.Theer is no explaining whay would a leadership of such a strong allow this young man to destroy it like this.
Karen 11/21/2008 10:39:01 AM
Shame man!!! You are one sick man. Yes people are fighting for their own agendas, its just the identity of those people that you have a bit mixed up - its the ANC NEC. The rest of us have an agenda of a better country for all - and I mean all people of all races equally. You are wwrong about whites not liking blacks as well. Its ANC supporters that don't like anybody that is not ANC. They also don't like people of other races even if they are ANC. So you wake up brother!!
20 sumthing yr old white boy 11/21/2008 10:40:21 AM
7 of the 12 paragraphs start with the word IMAGINE. Well imagine this: we all win the lotto buy all the things only celebrities can afford, mansions supercars etc. Bob & Morgan are best mates & Zim is a well oiled machine, Bush & Bin Laden are golfing partners and there was no war, Imagine the ANC ACTUALLY cared about the people, imagine the whole world was at peace and everyone loved eachother & petrol is for free. When U'r done imagining go warm up your coffee in the micro, it's very cold...
Mandla 11/21/2008 10:41:05 AM
"While Mandela may still be a disciplined member of the ANC, I think it is probably just because he hasn't actually resigned and that is also probably not because he still believes in them, but because he is old and has retired from the political arena - speculation of course." Karin you are hopeless. But I see you just cant stomach the truth, so you speculate.
Karen 11/21/2008 10:42:09 AM
Since when does the ANC own the Congress of the people - how do you think the other parties that were involved feel, knowing now that the ANC takes full credit and ownership of something that they thought belonged to all of them? The Freedom charter - doesn't sound very free to me if the ANC own it. As for Malema nobody wants to steal him, you can keep him - but just for arguments sake, how do you steal a person? Do people not have free will?
Craig 11/21/2008 10:43:40 AM
I seriously think the ANCYL could use someone with your outlook in it's ranks. I don't know how old you are, but if you qualify then you should have a go! Your ideals are exactly what the country needs. But as long as Malema is in any way associated to the ANC, they don't have my vote. He's bad news
Jinx 11/21/2008 10:44:38 AM
Unfortunately Malema tends to have a messed up image of the position he is in. Malema acts like he is actually the president of the Country, see if he can realise his place then he will realise he needs to deal with issues realting to the Youth not the wntire country including the fallen heroes . But Thilaiwi, nice article but its all a fantacy
Craig 11/21/2008 11:06:41 AM
Is not a leaders backside, and he proves that every time he opens his war mongering mouth. Imagine he was actually made to answer for his remarks, and asked to explain how telling the youth that they will die for Zuma is in the best interest of the country? A political party should be bigger than one man, and our leaders should be the epitome of law abiding citizens, and not some power hungry mob that will threaten violence as soon as things don't go their way!Leaders should lead by example!!!!
Phumu 11/21/2008 11:07:13 AM
We can dream or imagine all we want, OOps reality call !! I don't see anyone in the ruling party who can guide him what he is,is what ANC built him to be (thats the end product) Hope COPE can rescue us from this nightmare party !
Emkay 11/21/2008 11:07:31 AM
AZANIA, Thilaiwi couldn't have asked for a better comment to give more strength to her argument. You display the narrow mindedness of a certain type of youth supporter of the ANC that refuses to engage in real debate; rather choosing to use insulting, rude and frankly immiture arguments in their quest to throw weight behind a very inexperienced and dangerous youth leader.
