Ginger, News24 User

Is it just me or is the television getting worse by the week? I pay my TV licence, but I am wondering what for. I don't like soap operas and I don't like a lot of the second and third grade rubbish we get from America.

That doesn't leave much worth watching - sport and Strictly Come Dancing about sum most of it up. Now and again you get a really good series that comes on, but is it worth the licence fee?

Quite honestly I prefer to watch DVDs because at least then if I am watching rubbish it is my own fault. I watched Rocky and Bullwinkle again the other day - a totally cheesy movie where the bad guys want to make RBTV (really bad television) so they can turn the nation into mindless zombies.

Well I guess SABC completed their evil plan. Surely there are enough brilliant minds in South Africa to be able to make more decent home grown shows? And surely America has some better grade stuff for sale? What about more stuff for family viewing and more stuff suitable for children on Saturday mornings and during school holidays?

It also wouldn't be a bad idea to have had exam revision stuff on during exam season for high school children. And what about the fun game shows we once had? Where have they all gone? And where is the half hour to an hour pleasant evening entertainment that didn't contain bad attitude and bad language.

Enough of this so called Reality TV already. I don't pay my licence to hear Americans whine for an hour each night. Can we please have something where everyone has not slept with everyone else in the cast, where we don't have to listen to see how many times the f-word can be used in one sentence and where they haven't had to use twenty bottles of tomato sauce/fake blood just for the opening scene alone.

Surely there is such thing as positive TV? Stuff to help people make things, create things, grow things, improve their lives. Movies that make you want to be a better person. Series that show how to make other people's lives better (OK we've had a couple good Americans ones but maybe a couple of SA ones would be even better).

Equal coverage

Also, can't this home shopping stuff and long boring commercials get it's own channel? Nothing annoys me more than an insurance or diet advert that goes on for half an hour while we get endless of examples of how happy people are with the product - whoopee doo - congrats to them - now get off our screens.

And while we are on the subject of separate channels, give the politicians their own one then they can be allocated fair amounts of TV and also stay off the entertainment channels and stop claiming they don't have equal coverage.

Watching Malema change feet when he opens his mouth might be just as entertaining to some South Africans as watching whining Americans who just want to vote each other off.

At least the viewers will still get to watch endless whining and complaining about everyone else. Those of us who would rather not can watch another channel.

Though, I have to say, at least my family are not glued to the TV every night which means we get to spend quality time with each other. So I can thank the SABC for that.

Seems that the ANC's transformation of the SABC is now complete, which, in essence, means that they have stuffed it up just like they have stuffed up each and every other institution that they have transformed. It's also interesting to note that their main target audience is actually NOT the people who pay their licence fees! Go figure ...
Camel Man 11/26/2008 12:12:39 PM
As far as I know, you pay a TV license when you purchase a TV. It has nothing to do with the programmes that are aired. If you buy a car,you have to renew the license every year, regardless if you use the car or not.Once I see a TV license inspector in a township,I'll pay mine.
Sandelk 11/26/2008 12:15:40 PM
The best way for you and your family to grow is to not watch too much TV, so see it as a good thing. I don't have DSTV and don't want it, because I know it'll turn my family and I into people whose social lives revolve around the TV, which I've seen enough of in others and don't want...
pangea 11/26/2008 12:17:15 PM
They are so bad they are even begining to re-run the late night Friday and Saturday night Adult Movies. And to believe I pay for this mouth piece of the ANC.
Sam 11/26/2008 12:21:15 PM
Good Article Ginger Things I hate on TV. 1. Too much sex, esperciall SABC1 2. Too much of Desmond dube and his funeral cover 3. Bad language Suggestions. 1. Ask us the viwers what we would like to see 2. Scrap TV licence and continue airing gabbage 3. Creat a sex or Porn TV channels, and sexx off the family TV. 4. The rest of Ginger suggestions
IandI 11/26/2008 12:26:09 PM
I do not see why I should pay the SABC R225 per annum for the garbage they dish out daily, I watch DSTV and eTV instead. How can I cancel my SABC licence without selling my TV?
Tsotsi 11/26/2008 12:29:12 PM
Does anyone still watch these TV stations anymore!?
Watcher 11/26/2008 12:29:16 PM
Unfortunately TV programming is a business. Like any business the bottom line is money. If you have'nt got much money left because you have spent it on lunches entertainment and holidays for your hangers on, then all you can afford is the third rate rubbish that you now see on your tv screens
mb 11/26/2008 12:32:12 PM
True. The other weeks they took one series three episodes back that we had already watched and none of them noticed for the following three weeks, it is as if they just put the tape and go home and we have to watch watever is there. They bring these local series on SABC 1 and they don't pick up where they left, they repeat the whole thing, what is the use??? F..k them!!!
nthatuwa 11/26/2008 12:32:21 PM
For the 1st I agree with you on something. You're spot on.I harldy watch Tv anymore.SABC3 is a channel that one can still stomach.I don't like soapies, but they're always in my face.Turn to SABC 1,2 & 3 and it's flippin soapies.Don't even mention SA dramas on SABC3,always having sex scenes and violence.I say big up to SABC3,their Std is slightly higher. If you have no TV,Trust me,you're not missing uot much.A radio is fine just to keep you updated on the news and music to take away your stress.
nthatuwa 11/26/2008 12:36:27 PM
the dramas we used to have,Lesilo,Mopheme, etc. They has totally diferent story lines, great actors and you were always glued to the screen. We'd all talk about last night's episodes with friends at school and mimic characters. Those were the good old days.I suppose they're all gone, together with lots of things and we are just fed with trash from the US.it has poisoned so many of us.And don't say the media doesn't influence us.
Nafisa 11/26/2008 12:48:25 PM
Would you like some cheese to go with that whine?
Anonymouse 11/26/2008 12:50:17 PM
Join your local municipal library. It's dirt cheap, and it's actually mentally stimulating (instead of sucking out the last vestiges of intelligence). Also, much more convenient - I can't watch TV in the bath, on a bus or in the bank queue. Instead shelling out even more $$$ for a PVR, a bookmark costs next to nothing. I haven't owned a TV in years (one less reason for break-ins, yay). My old laptop plays DVDs just fine and theatres are nice to go out to every now and then.
whoop dee doo 11/26/2008 12:50:31 PM
i suppose tht r y there r dstv - something tht u have to pay on top of ur tv license to watch stuff u've seen more than a few times already... And tht's y i pirate - pirating r the way of the future - well at least mine... for the moment
Jann 11/26/2008 12:50:33 PM
Foreign language films with sub-titles on at prime viewing time? We have 11 official languages of our own so why do we have to have films in other European languages? And way too many ads and ad breaks. The few programmes that I enjoy, I tape and watch later when I can fast forward through the ads.
BD 11/26/2008 12:51:20 PM
I moved to Germany. I have a working permit that allows me to work here for 2 years. I tried cancelling my TV licence. They need proof you are leaving the Country, Proof where you TV has gone too, Proof that you left the Country and Proof that you have arrived in the other country, also proof that you are employed here. I sent the all of this and they still won't cancel my licence. I will never pay it again. DSTV is worth it because I control it!!! Stupid BEE AH
Benzo 11/26/2008 12:51:30 PM
Both are too expensive for what they offer. No TV? Not really an option. You could chase (younger) kids out of the house to go and watch at your neighbours. Solution? Plug a TV card in your computer, connect to ADSL, hook a screen up to your computer for family viewing and off you go. No licence required (licence regulations don't cater for this to my knowledge) and ADSL or any other broadband connection is cheaper than DSTV/SABC combined. Anyway, no TV licence Inspector will suspect you from doing such a thing. Happy viewing from a wider choice than you ever imagined.
M 11/26/2008 12:51:44 PM
The contents is mainly geared towards people in the township but they are the last to pay for it. How ironic. Gotta love the government and its "selective" enforcement. I don't watch tv because the contents borders on stupidity.
mlungisi 11/26/2008 12:52:18 PM
SABC has finally become useless for South Africans, the rubbish and garbage the dish cannot be associated with anything except poo. I am disgusted when they show psl matches at 23h00, as far as I know no psl match has kicked of that time. Apart from the psl, why on earth would they have 3 channels all of them having the same mandate. At least should be like...SABC Sport, SABC news, SABC Entertainment, SABC Geographic...etc. Come on guys you can do much better. This is daily robbery.
Linda 11/26/2008 12:55:53 PM
Hundreds of repeats or sports that is all there is to watch on a Saturday, I agree what are we paying for.
Bev 11/26/2008 12:57:25 PM
What a pathetic fool you are Ginger. If you do not like what is on the TV then complain to the SABC.If nothing improves then get rid of the thing. It is as simple as that and you and your family can live happly ever after.
JJ 11/26/2008 12:59:12 PM
TV licences are my pet hate. Why is it the only thing that has been retained from the National Party government. Really...how can they try and control technology like that. Its an old fasioned idea that has no life in the modern world. Its ridiculous to expect that any device with a display that can receive radiowaves should be licensed.
fern 11/26/2008 12:59:45 PM
most of the local programming quality on sabc rivals that of the water supply in Zim
Paul 11/26/2008 1:00:37 PM
Great article Ginger! Let's just hope someone who can actually do something about the dire state of our public TV actually reads this article and makes a decision to do something positive!
Peter 11/26/2008 1:07:09 PM
I can't complain about the bad TV because I have never had a TV license. Why not? You pay monkeys, you get peanuts! Stop paying!
drphil 247 11/26/2008 1:07:15 PM
strictly come dancing was nice @ the beginning by so far HA what terrible thing in theTV.All TV programe are similar.new programe needed urgently
Thabo Z 11/26/2008 1:07:57 PM
I love the SABC soapies and entertainment, as it is the best. Isidingo ,Generations ,Top Billing. SABC also has the best Amercan movies ever. I have learned so much by watching those movies. We should all pay our TV license so the SABC can keep giving us the best entertainment.
AJ 11/26/2008 1:09:56 PM
The thing I pay so I can watch DSTV.
Juan 11/26/2008 1:12:05 PM
Are there actually people out there STUPID enough to pay for a tv license?
Anon 11/26/2008 1:12:44 PM
What a load of drivel, terrible article and even worse spelling and punctuation.
Bev 11/26/2008 1:16:33 PM
Really Ginger if you don't like the content of the TV then complain to the SABC if they ignore you then get rid of the damn thing. Now you and your family can live happly ever after. Simple solution.
Wayne 11/26/2008 1:18:25 PM
The only difference between me and my friends is that I only have 4 channels to surf to find nothing to watch. If the SABC spent a bit more on quality international and QUALITY local programs I would pay my License with a smile. Unfortunately they seem more worried about profits and salaries than providing good service. Maybe thats why the politicians want more say in the SABC, they don't need to break it, it's already broken.
Liaan 11/26/2008 1:18:48 PM
Fully agree with your comments. Sadly, a lot of the mindless TV is a reflection on the average South African mentality too - this is what many want to watch. Intelligent TV has gone out the window: you merely have to see how many ex-models (few being even remotely intelligent) are presenters on TV. Come on! I crave something like Jay Leno, with razorsharp humour and social comment. I'll even present it, but alas, half of SA won't understand, its not wrestling and I'm not Minki/Jo-ann/Cindy. ;)
Sven Gohre 11/26/2008 1:20:06 PM
Thank Goodness for SABC TV, for if we had a decent public broadcaster, I would not find time to read the books and newspapers that I do. The only complaint I have, is the compulsary TV liscence fee, to own a TV set even if it never ever tunes into the dubious delights of SABC.
mohamed 11/26/2008 1:22:38 PM
I do pay my TV Licence. I like to watch tv moderately. There are 1 or 2 good programs on Tv that is a pleasure to watch. However most of the time the quality of television is very low in deed. For an example we watch really old programs which is really frustrating. We as South Africans would like to watch present programs and not a few years old programs.
Billy 11/26/2008 1:24:37 PM
The SABC uses your money to pay for the ruling party's propaganda. Money wasted.
Badger 11/26/2008 1:27:28 PM
D.S.T.V. I cannot remember when last I watched S.A.B.C. And it is worth every cent every month. Go Get The Magic !!!!
Elizabeth 11/26/2008 1:28:56 PM
You talk about Americans whining for an hour - what do you call your "article"? There are plenty good shows! Like Cold Case, Law & Order, 7de Laan, Joey, How I met your mother, Grassroots, Prison Break, Where were you. Yes most of them from the US, but, alas, they have the money to make good shows! Now if only CSI NY, Bones, etc, could come to the SABC channels...
Brad S 11/26/2008 1:29:52 PM
I don't pay my TV license. I'm lucky enough to have bought my TV through the back door. So I didn't have to buy a TV license and I never will buy one. I don't watch SABC, its rubbish, so why must i pay them for a service I don't want. Anyway has anyone ever seen a TV license inspector, do they exist?
juzee 11/26/2008 1:31:05 PM
Hi Ginger, What an excellent topic. I don?t really understand why the SABC expect people to pay for TV licences and yet you don?t have a choice on what to watch and I love sports as well you don?t see any except when the content manager has decided that he will include it things like the end of the year tour of the springboks but when Bafana Bafana is playing it doesn?t matter what time they are playing SABC will show it I find that to be a little discriminative on their side. Oh yes and the soaps (the bold, Generation) if I had a choice I would get rid of them ASAP because they are just a waste of time especially the bold what we seeing here happened three seasons ago, do I really need to pay the TV licence nope I don?t think so. If I am going to buy a service I expect it to meet or exceed my expectation SABC is way below. I hope the one of the SABC directors does comment on this and they should tell us what they do with the licence money and my tax money (government funding) and why I don?t have choice on what I can watch on their channels.
John 11/26/2008 1:35:12 PM
Mnet has no competition so they can churn out rubbish as long as it is marginally better than SABC. What blows my mind is SABC sports coverage. The politians want to develope the games of rugby & cricket in the black comminities but do not have live coverage of International away games. SABC is a joke.
jannie 11/26/2008 1:35:42 PM
I agree partly with you. Agree that theres too much soaps, repeats of soaps and infomercials. I am a reality TV fan however, and Survivor and Amazing Race are great! Your comment "..positive TV? Stuff to help people make things, create things, grow things, improve their lives." I think you should rather get off your lazy ass and watch less TV, and rather help yourself.
Miss T 11/26/2008 1:36:00 PM
Way to go - we need more Proudly South African good stuff. Why not open competitions to universities and students and see what ideas/ scripts they can come up with. It would be good to see more comedies - we could do with laughing at each other and with each other.
20 sumthing yr old white boy 11/26/2008 1:38:45 PM
The standard of TV has gone down lately, and what is up with the US soapies? Don't quite know if Days of our lives is a sci-fi/fantasy/horror show?? Don't even try and watch TV on a Wed if you don't have DSTV, there is nothing to watch but rubbish, after isidingo and the news the TV goes off, there is utter cr@p on all 4 channels, (E included) I must say tho, well done to the producers of isidingo, great show.
Honky Tonk Man 11/26/2008 1:44:08 PM
Strictly come dancing?? Please. Shows you how subjective this issue is. But that been said I agree SABC is crap. Try DSTV, pay an arm and a leg for re-run after re-run. ( still better than SABC however)
slabs 11/26/2008 1:45:10 PM
Its called DSTV and costs less than R20 a day. Thats about the same price as a DVD rental. For that I get all my sport and all my info programs on dicovery, nat. geo.,etc. My kids watch cartoons in the mornings on the weekens and my wife gets all her programs.Thats the whole family entertained for less than 20 bucks a day for dual view. I dont even know what is on SABC anymore.
Raymond Hocknell 11/26/2008 1:45:25 PM
SABC is crap. Fact. There is absolutely nothing worth watching. I give up nights out so that i can afford DSTV. Unfortunately, often there is only crap on DSTV too. The solution; put the damn TV off.
M 11/26/2008 1:48:28 PM
Either you are an idiot (you learned something from an American movie????) or you work for the SABC and realize you can't get bucks because nobody is willing to pay for this junk. The only reason why people still pay is because they need a license to buy a TV so they can get better content from DSTV
Crackerjackjack 11/26/2008 1:50:02 PM
Someof that old third rate American shows are actually ok to watch. There is more than enough shows on TVduring the week on SABC. Mondays you get three sitcoms on SABC 3 which are actually worth watching. Tuesdays Aprrentice and survivor. Wednesdays (nothing, leave that to playstation) and on Thursdays There is heroes and top billing. And on Saturdays you get the late night ETV movie. The only time there aren't shows to watch is the weekends. I have DSTV but watch SABC most of the time.
Raven 11/26/2008 1:51:48 PM
Bev, we got u the first time, you've had ur say now u go live happily eva after. And for those of you raving bout DSTV, my word, they play the same crap over & over too?? Totally agree with Ginger.
M 11/26/2008 1:53:34 PM
That's one time slot during the entire day (on SABC3 if I'm not mistaken, except for 7de Laan and How I met your mother (free on etv). Do you always buy a cake and just eat the icing off one slice and then throw away the rest? And the shows they don't buy are horrendous, ever watched the Olympics and their so-called "experts"?
MJ 11/26/2008 1:54:25 PM
It is a tax, regardless of what you choose to watch. Just like it doesn't matter which car you drive, you still pay tax on fuel.
Thokozani 11/26/2008 1:57:37 PM
I totally agree wth you Ginger, South African television makes anyone want to sleep early, same thing with radio, nothing that make your hair rise. I'lltell you what as long as our enternatinment industry relies on one and the same people, who themselves feed us junk and as long as production tenders are still given to friends, tele ratings are going to drop drastically. i'm a creative perosn myself, very good with the pen, but how longhave i been knocking on doors, for decades.
GKM 11/26/2008 2:00:05 PM
I pay my licence and enjoy SABC 3 sometimes (Tuesday evenings) but what gets me is the emails I , & my wife on seperate cell phone get from lawyers saying they will "blacklist you (unnamed) for non payment of TV licence" SABC must sort this out as when you call the lawyers they can not identify you as the person they intended to blacklist but they say SABC gave them the cell phone number of offenders.
VG 11/26/2008 2:07:07 PM
LOL..'ve just gotten an sms saying " your TV liecence payment is due urgently" and i'm thinking...but I only watch DSTV! I'm actually not opposed to paying, but no matter how "Easy" they make it, its a schlep for me considering that its not something I value. They should just take it off your tax or something.I think if they want it, they should come get it. Not make me go to them
als 11/26/2008 2:08:57 PM
I agree 100%. We regularly have this conversation in our home. I will not watch SABC but even DSTV seems to be scraping the barrel and the repeats are getting too much, but boy they increase your subscription every year. Frightening to think there are people in this country who enjoy the SABC.
Archangel 11/26/2008 2:14:57 PM
Pretty good article. The short answer is that maybe there are no brilliant minds or intelligent people left at the SABC. Personally I do not watch SABC at all as I will not subject myself or family to the propaganda being sprouted on there. It is nothing more than the official "mouthpiece" of the ANC Remembe the "old" SABC and the NATS? My how things change but then actually just remain the same.......
jannie 11/26/2008 2:15:20 PM
I agree partly with you. Agree that theres too much soaps, repeats of soaps and infomercials. I am a reality TV fan however, and Survivor and Amazing Race are great! Your comment "..positive TV? kgomotso 11/26/2008 2:16:21 PM
The greatest injustice i can do with my money is to pay tv license.Generation alone on SABS1 gets 7 and half hours instead of 2 and half hours.Hell no am i paying for such repeats and nonesense.
Nicole 11/26/2008 2:21:12 PM
really how much is a tv license two/three hundred bucks a time. If that is such a huge loss to you the by all means sell your tv and keep all your money to feed your family of stop crying foul about nothing!
Fred 11/26/2008 2:21:12 PM
Thabo Z you work for the SABC right ,come on tell us the truth,,,,,,,,,, i knew it hahahahaha
mb 11/26/2008 2:21:33 PM
I really wonder which planet you from, either you are from ZIM or you are too young mentally to comprehend the sad state of SABC, they are not worthy of the national name!!!
Kenroid 11/26/2008 2:24:18 PM
Maybe SABC should look into financial education shows - not teachers teaching - but shows that improve the financial knowledge of our country as a whole!!! Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad Poor Dad) has a show on CBS in America that aims at improving the financial education, and awareness of the people of America - surely somebody here can do the same over here!!!
Singata 11/26/2008 2:29:08 PM
Ginger, you spot on SABC they giving people a crap for their money. how can you watch the same staff tonight tommorrow, and over the weekend. Sport you get it after the games, they must go back to their drawing board and start checking with the viewers on what they would like to see on the screen. Most of the soapies they mislead our youth and ladies as they try to be those characters in their lives.
JC 11/26/2008 2:32:24 PM
Thanks to the crud on ANCBC I can happily say my TV now serves as a pot-plant stand and I have caught up on a great number of good books. Remember, you choose to subject yourself to the garbage they transmit and you only have yourself to blame if you are upset by Julius Morono.
Anon 11/26/2008 2:45:06 PM
LOL. at least now we have "X-Rated Brainbox..." The show with no correct answers...
Apollo 11/26/2008 2:45:22 PM
Don't watch too much tv but must say I really enjoyed two movies lately on SABC3. "Fluke" and "Ladder 49." Much better than the normal Jean-Claude van Damme and Steven Seagal of a peaceful Sunday evening of the free competition channel.
Rudi 11/26/2008 2:46:05 PM
Its double tax. I have dstv, and never watch SABC. Your licence pays for the lumpen proles, this even though half of them, I am told, do not have licences. Don't complain, immigrate. You will not get value for tax in your life time. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/group.php?gid=37462010291&ref=ts
Fern 11/26/2008 2:46:56 PM
I really hope that the SABC bring in decoders for each channel so that you only pay for what you want to watch each month. I know I'd never pay a cent and would watch the DVD option over 15 repeats on Monday,17 on Tuesday, Sport, sport, sport and shopping commercials during prime time for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I can also do without WWE American rubbish. Bring on decoders SABC and see how many people are actually prepared to pay you for sub-standard programs.
VolricR 11/26/2008 2:48:11 PM
Remind me why it is the right thing to do? Except for that fact that it was made 'law'. Please, I have no idea!
nthatuwa 11/26/2008 2:58:57 PM
I meant dramas on SABC 1
Dan 11/26/2008 2:59:28 PM
The Problem with South African TV is that it is still cheaper to buy American crap then produce good local content. This might change now that we are paying R10 to the dollar? It could open up the door to local producers and finally push out the American crap!
Louis 11/26/2008 3:03:13 PM
SABC is a public broadcaster with an obligation to communicate important news and actuality information via TV and radio. Any television production costs way more than any of you might want to believe and the great minds would rather spend their effort in more lucrative ventures. But mostly the problem is that most viewers and listeners are not very affluent which in turn limits the return from advertising spend, which limits the money available to buy and make quality shows. But SABC is crap.
Linds 11/26/2008 3:04:39 PM
At least the TV license annual fee is less than what you pay for DSTV on a monthly basis. I discontinued my DSTV subscription because it's such a disappointment. No better than SABC and e-TV.
ryan 11/26/2008 3:05:06 PM
Hey Benzo, I am afraid as far as I know the law says you have to have a license for "any device with capable of receiving the signal and displaying images...including the tuner card.(I also did that a few years ago.)
Baas Koos 11/26/2008 3:07:41 PM
get a dish..... so you think you can dance is tons better than that rubbish...... and then there is discovery channel.......
M 11/26/2008 3:22:39 PM
Yes, but then target the people with the money! Why target the people without the money but let the people with some money/or all the money pay for it? That's the hypocrisy of it all! The people that have the money don't want to see the rubbish on SABC. No wonder everybody is so uneducated, just check out what kids learn on European channels, its more than what adults learn here, ever!

Programming is generally poor, nearly all agree on this. The solution, get DSTV. With regard to licensing, this is another, more sinister case. The law says you need one if you have an operational TV, if you use it or not. It is clear that many choose to ignore the law, because we dont agree. Are we now surprised at the lawless situation in the country, with all the road carnage, violence, rape and murder? They are also just laws that have been ignored too.

Would much rather watch 2nd rates overseas rubbish than watch the locally produced which is FAR FAR worse and would not even make it on air anywhere else.
bbvb 11/26/2008 3:28:42 PM
Is this Cuba or China? Why the hell must I pay Tax for a TV? TV licsences is purely an apartheid relic and is purely there to fund the goverments propaganda machine. And then they have they cheek to tell me its the rights thing to do. All I see is pro ANC programming and rubbish local soapies. Does any other first class country have TV licsenses (USA,UK, Sweden, Australia)? Didn't think so?
Get Real 11/26/2008 3:28:54 PM
My TV is only for my child to watch his one DVD a day. Otherwise Ispent my time doing quality things. I once had DSTV only left with over a hundred of channels to watch with nothing on it. Like you said, watch dvd's it is a matter of preference. So satisfy yourself that as your car your box is licensed. To complain won't get you anywhere.
Ginger 11/26/2008 3:31:20 PM
Actually I do get off my ass - I spend way more time in my veggie garden than near a tv. I also belong to my local library and I do enjoy a good read not to mention the library has free DVD's if we want one. My article was inspired by the sms I received reminding me to pay my licence by 30 November and I thought - what am I paying for?

I agree with some of your argument, though I must say that SABC 3 does have nice shows that I enjoy watching...I agree with Saturday mornings more kiddies shows would be great and the late night sex shows can come off air...hopefully you will find your silver lining:-) but really it isnt that bad.
M 11/26/2008 3:39:25 PM
Actually some of them do. But then again, their content is something to admired, compared to SABC programming. But I agree, soapies aren't going to educated our kids, they need things to stimulate their minds and there are enough programs the SABC can just buy from other countries which are at least educational.
Elizabeth 11/26/2008 3:48:18 PM
Uh. Yes, How I met your mother is on E, I never said otherwise. Cold Case, Law & Order, Where were you = SABC 2. It's different time slots, different days. No-one will like EVERY programme any tv station has to offer, because we all have different tastes. Do you think there are tv stations out there, where you will want to watch EVERY programme? Your cake-theory is a bit useless... :-)
I'll push a TV on you! 11/26/2008 3:58:04 PM
I am sry but in the 1st world country i live , there is no such thing as a TV license. Its just a way for the current regime to control more and to make more cash from the already over taxed and poor people of SA. I haven't owned a TV in years and dont intend on purchasing 1 either, just too much crap on TV and all the Adverts ...dont even get me started. I watch everything for free, streaming, up to date on the net, crystal claer quality i can live without, best thing....its all free.

Good people of SA I'm amazed at the level of criticism being posed to the broadcaster regarding the topic. It shows that most of you don?t think before you put pen to paper. Firstly the amount you pay (R225) for your TV license is minimal for you to be complaining. Dinner for 2 will definitely cost around that margin if not more, mind you this is in one night. But you complain when you have to pay this once in a year. Come on SA-lets be realistic. The amount charged is way too little for the entertainment provided by the broadcaster. I personally think they?re doing a great job. For those that complain that there?s not enough local productions compared to international programmes reason is local productions costs more than contracting an international programme. Maybe it will be a good thing for the broadcaster to hike up this minimal annual fee so they can have more local production. I?m thankful for the SABC as DSTV is luxury for the majority.

South Africa could produce good shows if we wanted to - there isn't a lack of brains or actors but there is a lack of facilities and funds available. I think the SABC might have spent it on too many committees with expensive lunches. DSTV is very nice but not everyone can afford it. Only R20 a day is hard for low income bracket earners, single parents, pensioners, and people who got caught in the credit crunch.
GailC 11/26/2008 4:09:04 PM
Rest of the time it is switched off. If it was stolen on a Wednesday the only person who wouyld miss it is my 19yr old lodger who watches the same DVD of pirates of the Caribbean every day! And he plans to be a chemical engineer!

Last time I watched a soapie they were shooting JR in Dallas. TV is a waste of time. Get a good computer so you can keep up with news and anything you might want to know about. Plenty of educational stuff on internet for the kids. True the people at the office might find it strange you have no idea what "Friends" is or who is who in the wrestling zoo but they get over it. It also has a DVD drive if you have the urge to break into the movie world. Just saw Kung Fu Panda myself and enjoyed it.
Fred 11/26/2008 4:12:13 PM
you know since i moved from my parents that has DSTV i now have an oppertunity to spend quality time with my wife cause there is just nothing on just boaring soapies, and more soapies and then the boaring SABC news
Elizabeth 11/26/2008 4:19:37 PM
I totally agree. It costs me about R23 a MONTH for my tv license. DSTV almost that (someone mentioned R20?) PER DAY. I cannot afford DSTV.

Remember Win & Spin and SA's own Weakest link? Then there was a word or 2 and we still have Noot vir Noot. Some home quiz programs can actually be enjoyable.
