Thanou excluded from 100m

Athens - Greek doping suspect and 2000 Olympics 100m silver medallist Ekaterini Thanou will not take part in the Games because she was not registered before the deadline, a Greek Olympic Committee spokesperson said on Wednesday.

"Ms Thanou has already been excluded from the 100m race. She was not registered yesterday (Tuesday)," said Greek Olympic Committee spokesperson Yiorgos Gakis.

"No matter what decision the IOC takes, she has not been registered."

Thanou, 29, could be banned from the Olympics later in the day by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for failing to show up at a drugs test last Thursday.

Her training partner and 200m Olympic champion Kostadinos Kenteris is also appearing before the IOC Disciplinary Commission.

"It was a formal decision. Since they were banned on Saturday, and the IOC had not taken a decision yet, the HOC's decision (to exclude the athletes from the team) could not change," Gakis said.

Registration deadline for the women's 100m race expired on Tuesday while the deadline for Kenteris' registration for the 200m expires only on Saturday, 72 hours before the competition's heats begin.

On Monday, Thanou and Kenteris had asked the IOC to postpone the hearing into their case by 48 hours so they could recover in hospital from a mysterious motorbike accident they claimed to have suffered a few hours after missing Thursday's doping test.

"When the HOC took its decision (to exclude the athletes from the Olympic team) on Saturday, it didn't know there would be another 48-hour delay of the IOC decision on Monday," Gakis said.
