5 weightlifters fail drugs tests
Athens - Five weightlifters entered for the Olympics have failed drugs tests, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Thursday.
IOC spokesperson Giselle Davies said five weightlifters had failed drugs tests prior to competing in the games since July 30.
The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will give a statement on the latest scandal to hit the sport later on Thursday, Davies said.
On Thursday a long-standing IWF member, who asked not to be named, said that six weightlifters had tested positive before travelling to Athens.
"It is terrible (for the sport)," he said.
Earlier, a Moroccan team source said that women's weightlifter Wafa Ammouri had failed a drugs test and been sent home from the Olympics.
