Jones handed relay lifeline

Athens - Marion Jones was handed the opportunity to add to her Olympic Games medal collection on Tuesday when the controversial sprinter was named in the United States' 4x100m relay squad.

The announcement was made just after Jones, who won three gold medals at the Sydney Olympics four years ago, had qualified for the Olympic long jump final.

US team officials confirmed that Jones would run the second leg of the relay in Thursday's heats just as she had done in a pre-Olympic meeting in Munich.

"It will stay the same in the final unless things goes wrong," added the US official.

Jones has been embroiled in a series of doping allegations in recent months although she has never tested positive for drugs.

"It is a little bit about getting the gold but it is also about doing your best in the midst of chaos, in the midst of a hell of a year," said Jones after confirming her place in the long jump final.

Jones has had a torrid build-up to the Games.

She has been subject to allegations over performance enhancing drugs, including claims by her ex-husband CJ Hunter, although she emphatically denies all such claims.

Jones did not qualify in any individual events on the track at the US Olympic trials in July but International Olympic Committee regulations allow anyone competing in the Games to be selected for relay duty.

Curiously, the two events Jones will contest in Athens are the ones where she only got the bronze medals in Sydney four years ago, when she won the 100m, 200m and was a member of the winning 4x400m team.

Jones had failed to qualify for her two preferred individual events, finishing fifth in the 100 metres at the US trials and pulling out of the 200m while embroiled in defending herself against allegations of drug abuse.

"Things are a little different from four years ago.

"I would have loved to have been competing in more events and going for them but there is a little more pressure here, it is going to be a little more difficult," added Jones, hinting at events beyond the track.
