Koreas join hands

Athens - Athletes from rivals North and South Korea marched side-by-side here on Friday at the opening ceremony for the Athens Olympics.

In a gesture laden with symbolism, athletes from the Stalinist North and capitalist South entered the Olympic stadium together under a neutral banner depicting a simple picture of the peninsula.

Earlier this week, Shin Bark-Jae, chef de mission of South Korea's Olympic team, confirmed that the two Koreas were in talks aimed at sending a unified team to Beijing in 2008.

North and South Korea are divided by the world's last Cold War frontier and remain technically at war as no formal peace treaty was ever signed to end their bloody 1950-53 conflict.
