Organisers reach ticket target
Athens - Olympic organisers reached their ticket sales goal with five days left until the closing ceremony.
Athens Games organisers said they sold 58 000 tickets on Monday, bringing the total to 3.4 million. Approximately 5.3 million seats were available for the Games.
Organisers originally set a goal of 3.4 million, then lowered it to 3.1 million as sales lagged. Most tickets have been sold for the semi-finals and finals, which will take place during the last days of the Games.
Attendance at venues was disappointing during the first week of the Games, but picked up as some of the most prominent events drew closer.
Tickets for the closing ceremony on August 29 are still available, organisers said on Tuesday.
