Anarchists hurl fire bombs
Athens, Greece - A handful of self-proclaimed anarchists hurled Molotov cocktails at police patrolling in central Athens early Sunday but there were no injuries or damages reported, authorities said.
No arrests were made and there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
According to police, the attack was carried out at 03:00 at the tourist area of Monastiraki near the Acropolis where police forces were positioned these past few weeks for the security of the Athens Games.
Police had to tear gas to push back the anarchists, who then retreated after throwing rocks and setting fire to trash cans along the road.
This incident came after two days of street rallies by anti-globalisation and leftist groups in protest of a planned visit this weekend by US Secretary of State Colin Powell. On Saturday the State Department said that Powell had cancelled his visit.
Greece is spending a record 1.2 billion drachmae (US$1.5bn) on security to protect the first summer Olympics held since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Sunday night is the closing ceremony.
