Johannesburg - SA Paralympic javelin gold medallist Zanele Situ crowned her successful Paralympic Games campaign by being awarded the prestigious Whang Youn Dai Overcome prize in the form of a pure gold medal, at the closing ceremony of the showpiece event of the International Paralympic calendar, in Athens, Greece on Tuesday night.

Situ received the award ahead of Trischa Zorn of the United States and Britta Siegers of Germany, after the list of finalists was narrowed down from the initial 54 nominations from 34 countries, as forwarded by the International Paralympic Committee, Chef de Missions of teams, and the media.

Disability Sport SA President Peter Goldhawk expressed his delight at Situ's achievement which will bring further glory to SA sport.

"The Whang Youn Dai Overcome prize recognises and awards elite athletes that have exemplified an exceptional level of determination to overcome their adversities through sports at the Paralympic Games," said Goldhawk.
