Gels, creams against Aids

Washington - Several groups are working to develop a gel, cream or foam that men and women could use to protect themselves from Aids, a report released on Tuesday said.
More than 60 products are in the laboratory or being tested on humans.
Eleven products are in clinical trials, meaning they are being tested on humans. They are:
Acidform, in the earliest safety, or Phase I tests, sponsored by the Global Microbicide Project
BufferGel, in Phase II and III effectiveness trials sponsored by the HIV Prevention Trials Network and also being tested for its use as a contraceptive by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Phase II trials are also aimed at making sure a product is safe while the Phase III stage looks at how well a product works.

Lactin Vaginal Capsule, in Phase II trials at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases
Savvy, in Phase I and Phase III trials by the Global Microbicide Project, BioSyn and the NICHD
Carraguard, in Phase II trials, the most advanced stage, by the Population Council and the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
Cellulose sulfate, in Phase I trials by the Global Microbicide Project
Emmelle, in Phase II studies by Britian's Medical research Council and the Institute of Tropical Medicine
Polystyrene sulfonate, in Phase I studies by the Global Microbicide Project
PRO 2000, in Phase II/III by the HIV Prevention trials Network and Interneuron Pharmaceuticals
Topical PMPA, in Phase I trials by the HIV Prevention Trials Network and Gilead Pharmaceuticals
