Addis Ababa - Representatives of 14 countries in central and eastern Africa have agreed to come up with new national action plans to tackle HIV/Aids and boost regional contacts, conference organisers said on Saturday.
Almost 100 delegates made commitments at "national level and personally" at the end of an Aids conference held in here under the aegis of the UN Development Programme, one of the organisers said.
Burundi, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the
Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, and Uganda sent representatives.
Each country agreed to draw up a detailed action plan to be implemented over a period of between two and 12 months, said Yene Assegid, co-ordinator of the Central and Eastern Africa Sub-regional resource facility, a UNDP arm.
Experts will also set up a "virtual regional team for exchanging information and expertise notably over the internet and drawing a large number of people into effective participation in the struggle against the pandemic," she added.
"Less paperwork, more regional contact, that's the aim," said Ravi Prodom, a UNDP representative in the Ethiopian capital.
Representatives from donor nations, people living with HIV and members of international organisations and a range of civic associations attended the regional conference in Ethiopia, a country where the number of HIV-positive people is estimated at more than 3.2 million. - Sapa-AFP
