Vienna - Former president Nelson Mandela spoke on Thursday of the problems of fighting "the terrible epidemic" of Aids.
After a meeting with Austrian President Thomas Klestil, Nobel Peace Prize winner Mandela said: "It's very difficult for us to fight this epidemic alone."
Mandela presented his new campaign for international attention for the Aids disaster in Africa. The 85-year-old statesman said that the people in Africa, including South Africa, must be informed of the danger of Aids.
He said he was returning home "with much encouragement and hope" from his visit to Austria. "Countries like Austria can play a great role."
Klestil said the visit was "a particular pleasure and honour". Mandela was "a symbolic figure for freedom and democracy in the world".
As one of "very few personalities in the 20th Century", he had not only shown his own people the way, "but also given courage to millions of people all over the world".
During his visit to Austria, Mandela discussed setting up contacts with economic representatives who could support his campaign. - Sapa-DPA
