HIV+ man attempts record climb
21/09/2005 12:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A Johannesburg man will attempt to become the first person with HIV to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Paddy Nhlapo, who has had HIV for 14 years, will leave for Tanzania on Wednesday afternoon.
Should he reach the summit, he will earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the first HIV positive man to have reached the top of Africa's highest mountain.
He will be accompanied by a friend, Richard Yell, who has been living with HIV for nine years.
"Paddy intends to show that with healthy living, a positive HIV status does not limit a person's aspirations and their ability to succeed in whatever their goals may be," a statement from the organisers of the expedition said.
