Manto hails world's 'approval'
06/06/2006 21:42 - (SA)
Cape Town - The rest of the world has "finally endorsed" South Africa's focus on Aids prevention and "tackling the link" between the disease and poor nutrition, said Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on Tuesday.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) urged member states two weeks ago to integrate nutrition in their response plans, she told the national assembly in debate on her department's budget vote.
The Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and malaria has, for its part, advocated the inclusion of a nutrition component in proposals for HIV/Aids funding.
The WHO's African leg declared 2006 the year of accelerated HIV/Aids prevention.
'Honoured... to have led the way'
The minister said: "Regarding HIV/Aids, our emphasis on prevention of new infections and tackling the link with poor nutrition has finally been endorsed by the international community in various forums,".
"We are honoured as South Africans to have led the way in this regard through our comprehensive plan for management, care and treatment of HIV/Aids."
The Global Fund would host a partnership meeting in South Africa next month, signalling "that they have confidence in us".
