03/05/2007 21:21 - (SA)
Pretoria - The cabinet has approved the five-year national strategic plan (NSP) for combating HIV, Aids and other sexually transmitted infections.
Briefing the media in Pretoria on Thursday following Cabinet's fortnightly meeting in the capital the day before, government communications spokesperson Themba Maseko said the executive had been briefed on the newly-constituted SA National Aids Council (Sanac).
He said: "The government is pleased to note that the Sanac stakeholders unanimously endorsed the NSP for 2007 to 2011.
"The cabinet approved the NSP as a strategic framework that will guide the national response to HIV and Aids for the next five years."
The NSP's primary goal is to reduce new HIV infections, and achieve a 50% drop in the infection rate by 2011.
