  • Johannesburg - A pathologist says a charge against him of unprofessional conduct, for having named Aids as the cause of death on a medical certificate, has been dropped.

Dr Leon Wagner, former chief pathologist of the Free State, told Rapport newspaper he had received a letter from the South African Health Professions Council (SAHPC) saying it had decided to drop the charge.

The BBC news website said the complaint was filed with the health watchdog after a woman of 30 died in April 2005.

Proceedings against Wagner were triggered by a complaint from the woman's family.

The SAHPC previously said Wagner should face a charge of "unprofessional conduct", the BBC website said.

Wagner told Rapport the council said in its letter, that the matter would be dropped because there was no prima facie evidence that he had acted unprofessionally.
