Cape Town - Congratulatory messages continued to pour in to the special Telkom lines set up for a world-record-breaking attempt in honour of the iconic former president, Nelson Mandela.

"The latest statistics available were 14 485 telephone messages and 22 000 SMSes from within South Africa's borders. International messages totalled 671," said Telkom's spokesperson, Ingrid Krige.

She said Telkom, the SABC and FoneWorx, one of Telkom's premium rate service providers were behind the Guinness Book of World Records attempt.

Krige said the record does not exist, and they were trying to "create a new record for the most birthday wishes via an electronic way for 24 hours".

The record-breaking attempt started at one second past midnight on Friday morning and will end the same time on Saturday.

Krige said the number of calls would be independently audited and then sent away to Guinness headquarters in England where it would be adjudged worthy - or not - of entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.
