18/07/2003 20:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Maude Street will be closed to traffic on Saturday due to a banquet to be held at the Sandton Convention Centre to mark the 85th birthday of Nelson Mandela, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department said.
"Only hotel guests and the motorcade of President Mbeki, Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton will be allowed through," JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said on Friday.
Minnaar said Maude Street would be closed between West and Fifth streets from 15:00 until midnight.
He said the Empire Road off-ramp from the M1 would be closed to traffic on Sunday for the Blue IQ Johannesburg City marathon, an initiative that was created to revive the city.
Mandela would open a bridge that was named after him. The Johannesburg city council built the bridge to celebrate the life of Mandela, and his contribution to the country.
Minnaar said the Empire Road off-ramp would be closed between 09:00 and noon. Motorists could use Harrow Road as an alternative route.
They could proceed from the Harrow-Houghton off-ramp, continue on Houghton Drive, turn left into Harrow Road which becomes Sivewright, and they can join M2 East or M2 West from there.
The M2 East or M2 West highway would take motorists back on to M1 South, Booysens, Minnaar said.
