Post-mortem: Kerkorrel mystery deepens
14/11/2002 17:01 - (SA)
Cape Town - No light has yet been shed on the final hours of Johannes Kerkorrel, whose bloodied body was found hanging from a tree near Kleinmond on Monday.
Captain William Reid of Western Cape police on Thursday afternoon said a post-mortem had been done, but that no report could yet be released.
Ralph Rabie, which is his real name, had cuts to his and neck
and blood running down his arms.
Reid said: "Two family members approached police with the request not to release the report to the media. We have to honour the wishes of the family."
He said the report would anyway not be released pending the investigation.
"The release of the report could jeopardise the investigation. The Caledon court has to give permission before the report would be released, and it will do so only once it is satisfied that doing so would not impede the investigation."
Die Burger reported earlier that a canoeist apparently spotted Rabie's bloodstained car near Kleinmond about 13:00 on Monday and alerted police.
Police trackers from Faure found the body after following a blood spoor through dense bush.
The trail of blood indicated that Rabie had moved 30m through the shrubs and over dead branches.
Four pools of blood showed where he had rested on a bed of leaves.
He then staggered another 50m to a wattle tree, where he apparently hanged himself with his belt.
People close to Rabie said a friend of his had died in the same way some years ago. Rabie apparently wrote two songs for this friend, but the name of this friend was never made known.
