HIV: 'SA can't go it alone'
10/04/2003 13:23 - (SA)
Cape Town - Although the commitment of the Western Cape government in the fight against HIV/Aids was unwavering, developing countries like South Africa could not advance the fight alone, Western Cape premier Marthinus van Schalkwyk said on Thursday.
It was only through partnerships and multi-national organisations such as the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria that the country would begin to turn the tide of the pandemic.
Welcoming Global Fund executive director Dr Richard Feacham to a reception at his official residence Leeuwenhof, the premier said Aids had to be transformed from a terminal disease into a manageable one.
Van Schalkwyk congratulated Feacham and the national government on the signing of an agreement to donate $41m (about R330m) to South Africa's integrated TB/HIV programme.
He said that while the division of the allocation to national government had not yet been finalised, the Western Cape expected that between five and 10% of the funds would ultimately benefit the people in his province - primarily for supporting and expanding HIV testing at TB clinics.
