Cape Town - The smoking of marijuana in residences at the University of Stellenbosch (US) may have led to an attack on two students of the university.

Three men beat and kicked two students in their hostel rooms on Wednesday evening.

A third student, of Majuba residence, apparently escaped a similar assault because he wasn't in his room when the three men, allegedly on a reprisal mission, went on a 'raid' through the hostel.

A residence of Majuba, who did not want to be named, said the group, the Majuba Internal Alliance, consisted of hostel residents who are "fed up" with marijuana abuse in the residence.

However, another resident said that hostel residents would not resort to violence against fellow students.

A report on the assault will be handed to vice rector Russel Botman on Tuesday.
