Johannesburg - A prisoner has told how he kept watch at the door while a fellow prisoner and his girlfriend had sex in the visitors' room. Then, they swapped places and he had sex with his own girlfriend.
Afterwards, they drank tea and ate sandwiches together.
The Jali Commission resumed its hearings on Monday, for the first time in Gauteng, and this was testimony by Patrick Binca, an inmate at Leeuwkop Prison near Sandton.
Two inmates testified that warders at the maximum security prison could be paid between R50 and R200 for sex dates.
Chad Mills, who has been moved to Zonderwater Prison out of fear of revenge attacks, testified first.
Mills, serving a 27-year sentence for armed robbery, hijacking, attempted murder and burglary, testified that since 1997, Leeuwkop prison warder Frank Scheurn apparently bought inmates any food they wanted. He also apparently arranged sex dates for Mills.
Warder asking 'girlfriends' for sex - claim
Scheurn has been dismissed for helping a prisoner escape.
Mills said that after Scheurn left he'd made use of T C Sithole's services to arrange sex dates and smuggle radios, which he resold to fellow inmates, into the prison.
He said Sithole arranged seven sex dates, which cost him between R50 and R200 each. Mills also testified that the woman with whom he had sex was not his wife, with whom he has an eight-year-old son.
He said that in May 1998 he was "converted" and since then had had no further sex dates, but continued to sell radios to fellow prisoners.
Sithole's lawyer, James Human, said afterwards his client denied all allegations made against him.
Binca testified he'd stopped using Sitole's services when another prisoner told him the warder had been asking the prisoners' girlfriends for sex.
