Johannesburg - An Excel filling station was robbed of a small amount of money on Tuesday when eight armed robbers overpowered the 24-hour shop manager, East Rand police said.
Captain Thobile Xakeka said the men, armed with handguns and an AK-47, arrived at the filling station between Dawn Park and Boksburg just after 07:00.
They held up a petrol attendant and then went into the 24-hour shop, where they found the manager. They held him up as well, demanded money and wanted to know where the safe was.
Xakeka said the shop did not have a safe, except for an outdoor safe where money is deposited for security companies to collect.
The robbers only managed to get a small amount of cash which was in the cash register.
They fled in three cars - a green BMW and two white Toyota Conquests.
No one was injured and police were still looking for the robbers.
