Cape Town - Cape Town police on Friday warned the public to be on the lookout for a stolen bakkie carrying extremely dangerous radioactive material.
Police spokesperson Captain Fienie Nimb said the vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux bakkie, registration number CW56312, was stolen from a parking lot next to the Sportsman's Warehouse in Bellville shortly before 19:00 on Thursday.
She said the bakkie was loaded with two orange-coloured containers, inside which were a pair of hygrometers, an instrument used for measuring humidity.
Both instruments contained deadly radioactive material, which could be released if they were tampered with or damaged.
Nimb warned the public not to handle the containers or the instruments, but to contact the police on the emergency number 10111, or investigating officer Detective Inspector Wynston Payne on 021-9183118.
